Barbara Dennerlein: Internationally celebrated Hammond & Pipe Organ virtuoso.
Her CDs have won numerous awards, including the German Record Critics Award. Her CD "Take Off" (Verve/Universal) even reached number 1 in the jazz charts and was the best-selling German jazz album of the year. Barbara Dennerlein belongs to the small circle of German artists of international repute. On her recordings and in her concerts, she stands out as a member of a new generation of jazz musicians, and is regarded by her peers and her audiences alike as one of the leading representatives of her instruments: the legendary Hammond B3, and the mighty pipe organ.

It is an awe-inspiring experience to watch Barbara live on stage. As the most important and most successful German jazz export, she is familiar with large international festival stages and intimate clubs alike. A list of venues where she has wowed audiences is as varied as it is long: the "Blue Note" and the "Sweet Basil" in New York, "Ronnie Scott's Club" and the "Jazz Café" in London and the "Blue Note" in Tokyo; Philadelphia, Berkley, San Jose, San Diego; the Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, and Victoria jazz festivals; European festivals in The Hague, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, the Molde Jazz in Norway, the Arhus Jazz Festival in Denmark, the Maastricht-Kortrijk Festival in Belgium, the Vitoria Festival de Jazz in Spain, and German festivals in Berlin, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Burghausen, Freiburg, Hamburg, Hanover and many others. Besides her nearly endless live performances, Barbara has made numerous appearances on both domestic and international radio and TV.

Both with her own "Bebab" group and solo, Barbara is equally celebrated by critics and audiences alike on both sides of the Atlantic. The name "Bebab" is a play on "Bebop" and "Barbara" and indicates something unique for which there is no established term, no pigeonhole. She knows the value of tradition but is also at home in modern jazz, in the here and now. She is one of the few musicians who can make the connection between different styles and audiences, building bridges between the musical past and present. She is just as familiar with the grooves of youth culture as with the listening experiences of a generation that grew up with the Hammond organ boom of the fifties.

Swing, bebop, blues, soul, latin and funk - for Barbara there are no rigid boundaries, only fluid transitions. Audiences are captivated by her talent, her absolute mastery of the instrument, her taste, and not least, her warm personality. The B3, it would seem, is a seamless extension of herself. She understands better than anyone how to exploit her instrument to the full, creating a sound and a musical style that is unmistakably "Barbara Dennerlein". Her brilliant technique has breathed new life into the venerable Hammond organ, an instrument long neglected in modern jazz. She can rightfully claim to have paved the way for the organ's current renaissance in jazz.

Born in Munich in 1964, she fell in love with one sound at an early age. While others were practicing "Für Elise" or strumming "All You Need Is Love" on the guitar, Barbara was fascinated by the sound of the Hammond organ.

Barbara Dennerlein - That's Me

[6:45] 6. Love Affair I. The Ballad
[8:04] 7. Love Affair II. Forever And Never
[5:59] 8. One For Miss D
[6:50] 9. Downtown N.Y

By adding synthesizers and MIDI to her sound, Dennerlein has largely escaped from the dominant Jimmy Smith influence that buries most organists' potential musical personalities. With the exception of the somewhat overblown "Love Affair - The Ballad," she excels on the swinging set, holding her own with such extroverted soloists as trombonist Ray Anderson, tenor-saxophonist Bob Berg and guitarist Mitch Watkins; drummer Dennis Chambers completes the quintet. Dennerlein's expert foot pedal work often makes it sound as if there is an independent bassist on the colorful date. She contributed all of the originals except Anderson's "One for Miss D." and the mixture of blues, ballads, a jazz waltz and more complex pieces works quite well. This set is a very good example of Barbara Dennerlein's appealing talents. ~Scott Yanow

German Hammond B-3 innovator Barbara Dennerlein not only doesn't sound like Jimmy Smith on In a Silent Mood, it is really doubtful that these tracks could even be called jazz. A tranquil suite to the power of the inner life, In a Silent Mood is made up of carefully composed segments that stand individually on their own, but taken together, form a complete whole. Using only her B-3 here (and the occasional piano), and outfitted with foot pedals that trip her MIDI synthesizer settings, Dennerlein has assembled a beautiful album that glides and reaches into the rare, thin atmosphere of dreams.

As much as Smith defined the possibilities of the B-3 at the end of the 20th century, Dennerlein is beginning to define it for the 21st. ~ Steve Leggett http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-a-silent-mood-mw0001084946

A superb collection of classics by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichel, Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Beatles and a powerful organ trio with guitar, drums and Barbara’s exceptional left foot playing exciting bass lines.

Perhaps once or twice in a generation a young musician appears out of the blue, breathing spectacular new life into an old musical genre long regarded as passé. So it was with Barbara Dennerlein who was largely responsible for the rebirth of interest in the almost-forgotten Hammond B3. This album, “Barbara Dennerlein Plays Classics”, was recorded when Barbara was only 24 years old, long before worldwide fame that followed. It shows a mastery of the instrument far beyond her years, and stunning bass pedal work that is the envy of other jazz organists. Already by this time, this Munich native had reached the pinnacle of the German and European jazz scene, with far greater fame soon to come. “Barbara Dennerlein Plays Classics” captures that moment in time as a star of the European jazz scene was on the verge of worldwide recognition.  Here, with dazzling Dennerlein style, the Barbara Dennerlein Trio pays homage to some of the unforgettable songs of the ‘50s and ‘60s…. classics that recall names like Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichel, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and later, the Beatles. Barbara leads her trio effortlessly through swing, bop, ballads, blues, and even a tasty bossa, then tops it all off with two of her own compositions. Through it all, it’s all too easy to forget there is no bassist playing that tight bass… it’s just Barbara’s lightning-fast left foot. This is a truly delightful album, bound to become a favorite. In listening, one can easily see why this young 24 year old was already on the road to achieving recognition worldwide. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/dennerlein10

Frequently, after concerts fans asked me for a solo recording. Finally it’s here: A collection of solo concerts which I performed the last few months. A real live-records without any overdubs or studio tricks. So the music sounds just the way I played it for my audience. With this special live-atmosphere, evoked only by an involving and stimulating relationship between the performer and the audience.

That’s why I dedicate this album to all my true musical friends and to all the enthusiasts of the unique sound of the Hammond organ. A sound, which I combine with modern MIDI-technique to break up tradition and move into new musical dimensions with this classic and yet so incomparable instrument. I’m sure, all my fans will love this solo-album. And I am positive to find a lot of new friends for my kind of organ-jazz. So enjoy the music – till next time: live on stage!“ ~Barbara Dennerlein

After several recordings on her own Bebap label and for a few tiny German companies, organist Barbara Dennerlein came to the attention of a larger public with the release of this superior effort for Enja. Teamed up with eccentric trombonist Ray Anderson, fiery guitarist Mitch Watkins, and drummer Ronnie Burrage, Dennerlein performs six of her swinging originals, one apiece by Anderson and Burrage plus "Opus de Funk" and "A Night in Tunisia." The colorful voices of these musicians constantly inspire each other, and Dennerlein (whose sound with the use of MIDI had become quite original) quickly emerged as one of the brightest new stars of the organ in the late '80s. ~ Scott Yanow

German organist Barbara Dennerlein gained a lot of attention when she signed with Verve in the mid-'90s. This set shows that her sound is very different from the usual dominant influence on her instrument, Jimmy Smith. Much of the music is quite funky, with Dennerlein demonstrating that she can riff as passionately as anyone and come up with continually fresh ideas over fairly simple structures. There is more variety than expected on the program, including a straightforward version of the bebop standard "Hot House" and some moody ballads. Dennerlein is joined by a particularly strong supporting cast that includes trumpeter Roy Hargrove, trombonist Ray Anderson, Mike Sim on saxes, and guitarist Mitch Watkins. This is an excellent effort that is easily recommended to jazz/funk collectors. ~Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/take-off!-mw0000179647
