Her CDs have won numerous awards, including the German Record Critics Award. Her CD "Take Off" (Verve/Universal) even reached number 1 in the jazz charts and was the best-selling German jazz album of the year. Barbara Dennerlein belongs to the small circle of German artists of international repute. On her recordings and in her concerts, she stands out as a member of a new generation of jazz musicians, and is regarded by her peers and her audiences alike as one of the leading representatives of her instrument, the legendary Hammond B3.

It is an awe-inspiring experience to watch Barbara live on stage. As the most important and most successful German jazz export, she is familiar with large international festival stages and intimate clubs alike. A list of venues where she has wowed audiences is as varied as it is long: the "Blue Note" and the "Sweet Basil" in New York, "Ronnie Scott's Club" and the "Jazz Café" in London and the "Blue Note" in Tokyo; Philadelphia, Berkley, San Jose, San Diego; the Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, and Victoria jazz festivals; European festivals in The Hague, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, the Molde Jazz in Norway, the Arhus Jazz Festival in Denmark, the Maastricht-Kortrijk Festival in Belgium, the Vitoria Festival de Jazz in Spain, and German festivals in Berlin, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Burghausen, Freiburg, Hamburg, Hanover and many others. Besides her nearly endless live performances, Barbara has made numerous appearances on both domestic and international radio and TV.

Both with her own "Bebab" group and solo, Barbara is equally celebrated by critics and audiences alike on both sides of the Atlantic. The name "Bebab" is a play on "Bebop" and "Barbara" and indicates something unique for which there is no established term, no pigeonhole. She knows the value of tradition but is also at home in modern jazz, in the here and now. She is one of the few musicians who can make the connection between different styles and audiences, building bridges between the musical past and present. She is just as familiar with the grooves of youth culture as with the listening experiences of a generation that grew up with the Hammond organ boom of the fifties. Swing, bebop, blues, soul, latin and funk for Barbara there are no rigid boundaries, only fluid transitions. Audiences are captivated by her talent, her absolute mastery of the instrument, her taste, and not least, her warm personality. The B3, it would seem, is a seamless extension of herself. She understands better than anyone how to exploit her instrument to the full, creating a sound and a musical style that is unmistakably "Barbara Dennerlein". Her brilliant technique has breathed new life into the venerable Hammond organ, an instrument long neglected in modern jazz. She can rightfully claim to have paved the way for the organ's current renaissance in jazz. Born in Munich in 1964, she fell in love with one sound at an early age. While others were practicing "Für Elise" or strumming "All You Need Is Love" on the guitar, Barbara was fascinated by the sound of the Hammond organ. With a supporting cast that includes trumpeter Miles Davis, pianists Clyde Hart, Bud Powell, John Lewis and Duke Jordan and drummer Max Roach (not to mention a cameo by Dizzy Gillespie on both trumpet and piano on "Ko Ko"), Parker is heard in prime form on such classics as "Billie's Bounce," "Now's the Time," "Thriving on A Riff," "Ko Ko," "Donna Lee," "Chasin' the Bird," "Milestones," "Parker's Mood" and "Steeplechase."By Scott Yanow

Charlie Parke is one of the most important musicians in jazz history and a household name even for people who never listen to jazz. His music is like a textbook for aspiring jazz musicians, and it still sounds modern even after more than a half century since its creation. 2020 marks the centennial of Parker's birth, and to help commemorate the anniversary, Craft Recordings has released a vinyl box set containing the first four "The New Sounds in Modern Music" series, featuring recordings from 1944-1948. Without question, this is essential listening for anyone who wants to get a taste of some of Parker's most influential sessions. As the liner notes say, these are "the breakthrough recordings that essentially defined bebop."

Of course, these recordings have been reissued many times over the years, so what makes this release so special? Well, there are a few points to consider... First, the set contains exact replicas of the Savoy 10-inch album releases. Everything is precisely reproduced down to the last detail. As the liner notes mention, the producers "intentionally left any typographical errors intact for the sake of historical, rather than factual, accuracy." Just taking these discs out of their sleeves and putting them on a turntable is an experience you can't reproduce in a digital format. Next, the sound quality is excellent. The tracks have been remastered, and each has impressive fidelity considering that they were originally recorded during the 1940s. Along with the overall sound, the songs are genuine classics. The set contains Parker standards such as "Billie's Bounce," Ko-Ko," "Now's the Time," and "Donna Lee," and he is accompanied by musicians such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Max Roach and Tiny Grimes.

Finally, the set contains a booklet with excellent liner notes by Grammy-winning writer, Neil Tesser. He not only provides background information into the recordings, but also discusses Parker's continued influence on contemporary artists. Of course, some might wonder why these albums are being released on 10-inch discs rather than the more conventional 12-inch versions. Tesser explains that at the time these recordings originally came out, "the 10-inch records vastly outsold their larger cousins." Packaging the reissue albums in the original format seems to give a more authentic feel of the overall package. For jazz vinyl collectors, this set is about as cool as it gets.~ Kyle Simpler https://www.allaboutjazz.com/the-savoy-10-inch-lp-collection-charlie-parker-craft-recordings

As part of Verve's For Lovers series, the genius alto saxophonist Charlie Parker is spotlighted on 11 tracks recorded between 1949 and 1954. This romantic set of standards aptly highlights Bird's melancholic flight, especially on the seven tracks from Charlie Parker with Strings: "Easy to Love," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Laura," "Everything Happens to Me," "Summertime," "Autumn in New York," and "Out of Nowhere." Some of Bird's sidemen on these sessions include John Lewis, Red Rodney, Hank Jones, Buddy Rich, Kenny Clarke, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Ray Brown, not to mention a full string section. While this compilation contains timeless performances, it only represents a miniscule portion of Charlie Parker's panoramic legacy. ~ Al Campbell https://www.allmusic.com/album/charlie-parker-for-lovers-mw0000426002

Part of the Verve re-issue series, TALKIN' BIRD culls 12 Parker tracks from the Norman Granz-produced sessions in the early 1950s. As one would expect from Verve, the sound quality is immaculate, and the personnel for these sessions reads like a who's who of jazz history. Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, and Oscar Peterson all put in appearances, and Bird's playing seems even freer, more fiery, and more precise than ever in such company.

On five cuts, including one with Machito and His Afro-Cuban Orchestra, TALKIN' BIRD emphasizes Parker's penchant for Latin inflections. Such classics as "KC Blues" and "Lester Leaps In" (imagine-Pres and Bird on the same song!) are included for good measure. Like most of the Verve re-issues, the packaging and liner notes target a younger audience, championing the music as just as fresh, innovative and, incendiary today as it was when it was created. Nothing could be truer. ~AMG

Various - A Life In Time: The Roy Haynes Story (2 parts)

The litany of names that drummer Roy Haynes has worked with in his half-century long career reads like a history of modern jazz, and includes such undeniable luminaries as Lester Young, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Stan Getz, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea, Alice Coltrane, and John Coltrane, all of whom are represented on this three-disc (there is a fourth DVD disc that adds interviews and videos of live shows) survey of Haynes' musical life and times. Spanning 1949 through 2006, at 37 tracks this set only begins to scratch the surface of what Haynes has contributed to jazz, of course, but it is both an ideal starting point and a capsule survey of those contributions. A must for fans and those in the know, but even the most casual listener will be impressed.

A reissue of the original 1952 Clef recording session, this is one of the few instances in Charlie Parker's later career where he played with something other than a small bebop group. Under contract at the time to Clef's Norman Granz, Parker was encouraged by the label to make recordings that took him out of his familiar settings and put him in with string arrangements, Latin rhythms, and larger band formats. This recording is the result of one of these experiments. Though Joe Lipman's arrangements are stellar, the musicians assembled for the sessions are an odd mix of pop-oriented big-band players and improvisers. The album also suffers from the pop orientation of the songs themselves: solos are kept short, and songs limited to a three-minute length that was both radio-friendly and compatible with the 78-rpm format. But when Parker does solo, it is just as magical as any of his earlier recordings. The songs also have a sweet smoothness to them that makes them eminently enjoyable. This record is not perfect, but it still musters up moments of brilliance. The reissue is even more fascinating than the original, containing 10 bonus tracks which are alternative takes of the top singles on the album. ~Stacia Proefrock

Through the miracle of modern technology and countless hours of studio toil, producer Lennie Niehaus matches original solos by alto sax titan Charlie "Bird" Parker with accompaniment by modern players. The sidemen playing with the long-dead legend include bassists Ron Carter and Ray Brown, drummer John Guerin, and trumpeter Jon Faddis. It's a treat to hear Bird's brilliance in crystal-clear stereo, although the too-loud crowd noise from the original recordings on four of the 11 tracks is disconcerting. The soundtrack is from a celluloid tribute by jazz fan Clint Eastwood. ~Mark Allan

The groups are varied, as was Navarro's wont, featuring such luminaries as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Tadd Dameron, Leo Parker, Art Blakey, Howard McGhee, Bud Powell, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson, and Fats' idol, Charlie Parker. Navarro was a brilliant musician, done in by drugs and tuberculosis. This disc gives you an idea of how tragic his loss was to the jazz world. ~ Cub Koda http://www.allmusic.com/album/fats-blows-1946-1949-mw0000051021

Legendary jazz musician Charlie Parker was born Charles Christopher Parker Jr. on August 29, 1920, in Kansas City, Kansas. His father, Charles Parker, was an African-American stage entertainer, and his mother, Addie Parker, was a maid-charwoman of Native-American heritage. An only child, Charlie moved with his parents to Kansas City, Missouri when he was 7 years old. At the time, the city was a lively center for African-American music, including jazz, blues and gospel.

Charlie discovered his own talent for music through taking lessons at public schools. As a teen, he played the baritone horn in the school band. By the time Charlie was 15, the alto saxophone was his instrument of choice. (Charlie's mother had given him a saxophone a few years prior, to help cheer him up after his father had abandoned the family.) While still in school, Charlie started playing with bands on the local club scene. He was so enamored of playing the sax that, in 1935, he decided to drop out of school in pursuit of a full-time musical career.

This CD surpasses all former collections of pianist Jay McShann's early recordings, for it is comprised of every commercial side made by McShann during 1941-1943, including 11 delightful, if rarely heard, trio and quartet numbers (featuring McShann, bassist Gene Ramey, and drummer Gus Johnson), along with four lesser-known vocals by the limited but talented Walter Brown that are normally skipped. The result is as complete a musical picture of Jay McShann's early piano style and his orchestra (at least how they sounded in the studios) as is possible. Altoist Charlie Parker has five influential if brief solos (best is "Sepian Bounce") and trumpeters Orville Minor and Buddy Anderson, altoist John Jackson, and Paul Quinichette on tenor also have their spots. However, McShann is clearly the main star of this definitive set by the last of the great Kansas City swing big bands. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/blues-from-kansas-city-mw0000081286

Alto Saxophone – Charlie Parker; Bass – Tommy Porter; Drums – Max Roach; Tenor Saxophone – Lucky Thompson; Trumpet – Kenny Dorham, Miles Davis; Vibraphone – Milt Jackson.

These are radio show transcriptions from 1948-49, when Parker ruled at Manhattan's Royal Roost joint. Although the recording quality isn't superb, some of the tracks come off really well. Charlie plays with a very young Miles Davis on trumpet. Max Roach is the drummer on some tunes, Tadd Dameron is on piano and Milt Jackson makes a guest appearance.

Charlie was born in KC in 1920, got his professional start there as a teen, and was buried there 34 years later after shaking up jazz in a major way. ~William E. Adams

Various - The Complete Cole Porter Songbooks (3-Disc Set)

This is not and cannot be the Complete Cole Porter Songbooks, but it's a marvelous collection of 48 timeless jazz interpretations drawn from the Verve catalog. Recorded between 1951 and 1988, these standards, ballads and show tunes are rendered by some 15 vocalists, many of whom appear twice, and about 13 instrumental groups. In addition to the usual suspects (Ella, Louis, Sarah, Dinah, and Lady Day) there are fine performances by Abbey Lincoln, Anita O'Day, Billy Eckstine, Mel Tormé, Blossom Dearie, Shirley Horn, Betty Carter, Helen Merrill, Morgana King and Fred Astaire. The instrumentalists -- and this is most fulfilling because Cole Porter's music is an essential strand in the DNA of swing, bop, and mainstream jazz -- include Ben Webster, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Bill Evans, Tal Farlow, and Jim Hall. That makes this a portable jazz library of considerable potency, pungency and depth. Also quite valuable as a tool for learning and appreciating some of Porter's very best songs. First prize for both artistic magnitude and friendly intimacy goes to Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson for their fabulously relaxed, nearly nine-minute rendition of "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love." ~arwulf arwulf

Musicians like to observe that for all his notoriety as the wellspring of bebop, Charlie "Bird" Parker's music was loaded with the blues. Swedish Schnapps is as good a place as any to make that connection with Parker's music, including as it does two of his most enduring bop heads based on the blues, "Au Privave" and "Blues For Alice." While you wouldn't mistake either composition for a Muddy Waters tune, both relate Bird's off-kilter accents and serpentine melodicism at walking tempos that let you hear what's actually going by, instead of leaving you astonished but bemused. To really drive the point home, there's "K.C. Blues," which finds the altoist at his hollerin' best, and "Lover Man," certainly one of the bluesiest 32-bar standards around. http://www.allmusic.com/album/swedish-schnapps-mw0000265091

There are numerous outtakes, which offers a fascinating analysis of Parker's improvisations, as well as classics such as "Song Is You," "Laird Baird," "Kim," and "Now's the Time." What makes this session extra special is the excellent recording quality that too many of his early recordings, brilliant as they are, suffered from. Various - Down At The Jazz Club (2-Disc Set)

A jazz club is a venue where the primary entertainment is the performance of live jazz music. Jazz clubs are usually a type of nightclub or bar, which is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages. Jazz clubs were in large rooms in the eras of Orchestral jazz and big band jazz, when bands were large and often augmented by a string section. Large rooms were also more common in the Swing era, because at that time, jazz was popular as a dance music, so the dancers needed space to move. With the transition to 1940s-era styles like Bebop and later styles such as soul jazz, small combos of musicians such as quartets and trios were mostly used, and the music became more of a music to listen to, rather than a form of dance music. As a result, smaller clubs with small stages became practical.

In the 2000s, jazz clubs may be found in the basements of larger residential buildings, in storefront locations or in the upper floors of retail businesses. They can be rather small compared to other music venues, such as rock music clubs, reflecting the intimate atmosphere of jazz shows and long-term decline in popular interest in jazz.[1] Despite being called "clubs", these venues are usually not exclusive. Some clubs, however, have a cover charge if a live band is playing. Some jazz clubs host "jam sessions" after hours or on early evenings of the week. At jam sessions, both professional musicians and advanced amateurs will typically share the stage.

Various - Timeless: Savoy 60th Anniversary (2-Disc Set)

Savoy Jazz marks its 60th anniversary with this double-disc compilation of the early pioneers of bebop. This classic collection features some of the first recordings by such bebop masters as Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, and Stan Getz, among others, playing their classic repertoire of the '40s and '50s. These 32 compositions are also among those that helped to establish and solidify this newly introduced style of jazz in the hearts and souls of many swing and big-band followers around the globe, despite the early thumbs-down given by jazz purists of that decade. Titled Savoy 60th Anniversary: Timeless, the CDs feature state-of-the-art transfers from the actual acetate and tape masters created by these legendary artists at the original historic recording sessions. Listeners can now fully realize such great songs as "Parker's Mood," "Bohemia After Dark," and Little Jimmy Scott's first big record, "When Did You Leave Heaven?," in their finest quality available to date. A best buy for jazz history buffs. ~Paula Edelstein

Charlie Parker - Confirmation: The Best Of The Verve Years (2-Disc Set)

This two-CD collection brings the best of Charlie Parker's Verve recordings. The Verve sessions were recorded under the influence of impresario Norman Granz, who put Parker into a wide range of settings (quartet, big band, strings, and even a woodwind quintet with vocals are included here), playing both Parker originals as well as popular songs of the day. These are not the pared-down, blistering performances of the Savoy and Dial sessions; however, they are quite remarkable in that they reveal the astonishing breadth of Parker's musical genius. A voracious talent, he shines brilliantly in every setting. The joy in this collection is getting to hear his bright ideas in such a range of musical situations. ~Michael Monhart
