Welcome to The Alberta Lounge, where National treasure Oscar Peterson was discovered in Montreal. Alberta, the province where Deanne grew up and started her full-time music career ten years ago!

Inspired by the great Canadian jazz legend, The Alberta Lounge features two new tunes of Deanne's ("The Alberta Lounge" and "If You Were Here Today"). She also made sure to include two of Oscar's originals, the haunting ("Hymn To Freedom") and tender ballad ("When Summer Comes"). The rest were chosen from his vast repertoire, such as Lionel Hampton and Jeri Jones's tune ("Je ne Sais Pas,") for which Deanne had the utmost honour of writing original French lyrics. The album also has a remarkable jazz-funk cover of Jorge Ben Jor's ("Mas Que Nada" ), which Deanne sings in Portuguese and adds vocal harmonies for extra fun.

Deanne recruited some of Montreal's premier jazz talent for the project, including pianist Taurey Butler, bassist Morgan Moore, and drummer Richard Irwin. Also guesting on the album are long-time Canadian pals pianist Paul Shrofel and guitarist Steve Raegele.

Throughout, Deanne shines as a first-rate vocal stylist. Her contemporary style is still deeply rooted in the jazz tradition but is unafraid of pushing the envelope. This anniversary album is a dedication to all Canadians. To quote Oscar, "People are Canada's greatest resource."https://deannematley.bandcamp.com/album/the-alberta-lounge-lp

Deanne’s debut CD, Stealin’ Blue, is a tasteful mix of Jazz, and Pop favorites performed live in an intimate vocal/piano duo setting. Deanne, a native Calgarian, has captured the essence of her riveting performances on this album which features twelve distinctive tracks. Known for her emotional, sultry delivery and a pure tone that envelopes the listener in a warm embrace, Deanne’s sensibilities lie in her simple yet elegant style. Her approach is straight from the heart, a heart that is warm, vulnerable and genuine. Artists such as Frank Sinatra, Sue Raney, Coldplay, Hawksley Workman, Rufus Wainwright, Bette Midler and many others act as influences.

The powerful energy and immediacy she receives from performing before a live audience fuels her drive as a musician. Her debut album is that much more bold, electric with feeling, and honest because of her choice to record Stealin’ Blue live. Stealin’ Blue is an invitation to a quiet moment of magic.“I opted for songs with melodies that challenged my emotional boundaries and pushed me to explore the soul.” A quote from Deanne describing the musical mix on the album infused with Jazz, Torch, Blues, Pop and Gospel styles.

There are many standout tracks on this recording, one of which is “My Funny Valentine”. It is given an almost intensely cinematic reading. Deanne starts off with a blank vocal tone that has rather intense overtones for the verse. At the chorus, a more suave, sophisticated voice is heard as a counterpoint to the opening character. The piano solo serves as a bridge, a resting place between this vocal conversation. The song ends; a screaming whisper.

Another is the Cyndi Lauper ballad “True Colors”. Drawing on his extensive classical and jazz training, this version starts with an extended piano solo inspired by many musical influences. Deanne’s interpretation of the melody is vulnerable, passionate and real; emphasizing the song’s message of living authentically. The song’s unique ending has become a trademark part of this duo’s repertoire. Stealin’ Blue is an album of ballads.https://www.deannematley.com/music/stealin-blue-live-at-cafe-koi/

Deanne Matley’s voice and passion for jazz have taken her from her Alberta home to New York, France, Mongolia, and back. She sings standards, her own songs, and an impressive variety of covers with combos large and small, including Calgary’s Prime Time Big Band. Her previous four albums, with songs ranging from jazz standards to pop covers and Christmas favourites, have garnered her Top 10 radio play across Canada and fans around the world. She divides her time between Calgary and Montréal, and is excited that Because I Loved will be launching in both cities.

Canadian jazz vocalist Deanne Matley’s fifth album, Because I Loved, is a tour-de-force, taking the listener on an emotional journey from despair to quiet contentment, with stops at red-hot passion and the excitement of new love along the way. Deanne recruited some of Montréal’s premier jazz talent for the project, including drummer Jim Doxas (who also produced the album), pianist Paul Shrofel, bassist Adrian Vedady, and guest vocalist Ranee Lee. Because I Loved features four new tunes of Deanne’s to round out a song list that includes saxophone legend Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar,” the haunting “Forget Me” (written for the great Shirley Horn), and remarkable covers of songs by Journey (“Open Arms”) and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors (“The Wine We Drink”). Throughout, Deanne shines as a first-rate vocal stylist, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition but unafraid of pushing the envelope. Her seen-it-all authority permeates every cut. “This is an album about love, melancholy, and starting again … about relationships,” says Deanne. “It’s the album I’ve always dreamed of making,” Official release performances are in April in Montréal and May in Calgary, with an extensive Canadian and international tour to follow.
