«I’m not a fan of “pink quotas”. Least of all in music. Unfortunately, some people are still surprised to discover that women can play the saxophone, the double-bass or the drums. But it’s not like this everywhere. It is a question of culture, and we in Italy are still behind. I think the issue might be overcome with the support of education and school».

Sophia Tomelleri, 29 years old, is a Milanese saxophonist and composer, born in the trade (renowned saxophonist Paolo Tomelleri is her grandfather) who wants nothing to do with the gender controversies applied to jazz. And who can blame her?

After winning the prestigious Massimo Urbani award last year (this helped her record her debut “These Things You Left Me”, published by Emme Record Label and available on all online platforms) she is now among the most buzzworthy names of young Italian jazz. Tomelleri will play live on Thursday, October 28th at Milan’s Teatro Filodrammatici, during the first of three evenings of “JAZZMI FUTURE” at the head of an excellent quartet including Simone Daclon on piano, Alex Orciari on double bass and Pasquale Fiore on drums.

«Lately, when we talk about jazz, we don’t know what to think anymore. Too many things are trying to pass themselves off as jazz when they aren’t. While it’s true that jazz was born from a mixture of different cultures, it almost seems like it has lost its own identity», argues Sophia Tomelleri. What about new generations? «From what I’m hearing, some of my contemporaries appear to be too fixated on rational or conceptual music, with the result of neglecting harmony. I don’t want to appear too traditional, but I personally prefer a more acoustic kind of jazz, in the manner of saxophonist Mark Turner, who is one of my favorites». And speaking of favorites, Tomelleri places at the top of her preferred albums one of John Coltrane’s masterpieces, “My Favourite Things”, alongside “Something Gold, Something Blue” by trumpeter Tom Harrel. “Made in the U.S.A.” jazz clearly has a special place in Sophia’s heart.

Something she regrets about contemporary jazz is the clear lack of spaces it suffers from: «It’s not fair to say young people don’t like jazz. The main issue is a lack of spaces. Young people won’t go to theaters or venues where tickets are too expensive. And things become difficult even for us as musicians, if we don’t have anywhere to play. And I’m not just talking about clubs, sometimes it’s hard even to find a bar…».

Finally, we couldn’t resist asking Sophia about her encounter with the tenor sax. «It only happened three years ago», she explains. «I began with the piano when I was little, and at home we listened to a lot of jazz. Then I graduated from the conservatory in classical music and contralto sax. I feel very comfortable playing the tenor sax: it is the instrument I most like to use in my jazz improvisation. Lately I’ve been increasingly focusing on composing, and when I compose I use the piano. I am even thinking of deepening this aspect of my musical knowledge by signing up for a two-year course at Genoa’s conservatory of music».

Barbara Raimondi was born in Savona and has been working in the music field for over twenty years, having started very young as a self-taught person.Subsequently she moves to Turin, where she will enroll at the Jazz Center, following the Singing and Harmony Courses held by Francesca Oliveri and Luigi Tessarollo. He will attend the Jazz Center for two years and, on his return to Liguria, he will perfect his vocal technique with an opera teacher, expanding his knowledge in speech therapy. Later he attended seminars held by internationally renowned Italian and foreign musicians, first of all the American singer Rachel Gould, professor of modern singing at the Royal Jazz Conservatory in The Hague, Holland. He has collaborated with numerous recording studios, lending his voice for the creation of pop and commercial music pieces (Italian singer-songwriters, dance and acid jazz songs) and has participated as the only vocalist in the theatrical tour '95 - '96 of Roberto Vecchioni.

She then approached the jazz world, collaborating with musicians such as: Andrea Pozza, Luigi Bonafede, Emanuele Cisi, Giampaolo Casati, Paolo Porta, Garrison Fewell, Giorgio LiCalzi, Luciano Milanese, Roberto Rossi, Peggy Stern, Rob Sudduth, Claudio Chiara, Furio By Castri, Roberto Regis. In 2000 he released his first CD as a soloist entitled "VITA DA ALTOPARLANTE" for the Philology label: the work was made with his 4etto, composed by Riccardo Ruggieri on piano, Alessandro Maiorino on double bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums and avails itself of the prestigious collaboration of Emanuele Cisi on tenor and soprano saxophone. In August 2000 he participated in the "Mediterranean Noises" Festival in Roccella Ionica called in a project by Enrico Pieranunzi, a "Jazz Operina" dedicated to the Beatles and Miles Davis written by Pieranunzi on commission from the Festival.

In 2002 he also began to tackle a contemporary classical repertoire, collaborating with the vocal ensemble "The Dream of Polifilo" directed by Maestro Oto Perillo, with whom concerts were held at the Abbey of Staffarda, at the Church of Savigliano and in the Basilica. by Superga, performing Georgy Ligeti's Lux Aeterna and a piece by Enrico Correggia. Subsequently she worked with "The Ensemble Coro di Torino" on the realization of two concerts that were held in June 2003 for Enrico Correggia's seventieth birthday and, in 2004, she was one of the protagonists of the composer's multimedia work "Hoffmaniana" Austrian Thomas Deszy, produced by the Bregenzer Festspiele (AT) and replicated in Vienna in spring 2005.Still in the musical-theatrical field he participates in the show "Requiem for Rita Atria" with Valter Malosti and Furio Di Castri and also proposes his jazz reworking of Giorgio Gaber's songs with pianist Silvia Cucchi.

In 2005 his second recording work was released in collaboration with his historic quartet and prestigious guests, such as guitarist Sandro Gibellini, musician of great melodic and harmonic sensitivity; the disc is mainly composed of unreleased songs of his own composition and bears the title TOO NOISE. The third cd was released in January 2009, COUPLING JUDGMENT for the Dodicilune label, previewed at MITO - Settembre Musica in Turin and at the Turin Film Festival in November 2008. The disc features very illustrious collaborations, by Marco Pereira to Enrico Pieranunzi, Mario Rosini, Furio Di Castri, Luigi Bonafede, Riccardo Fioravanti among others. In 2010 he published his fourth album, CONTIGO EN LA DISTANCIA, a project that, together with Roberto Taufic and Enzo Zirilli, revisits the traditional Latin American repertoire in a jazz style: music of great emotional communication proposed with a new language. Kevin Mahogany's sudden prominence in the mid-'90s was a relief to many who felt that male jazz singers under the age of 60 were nonexistent. His swinging style was reminiscent, but not derivative of, Joe Williams. Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1958, Mahogany played piano, clarinet, and various saxophones while growing up before deciding to specialize in singing. He attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas and sang locally in some R&B groups. In the early '90s, Mahogany dedicated himself to jazz and, after two fine albums for Enja, he signed with Warner Bros. for LPs including 1997's Another Time Another Place and 1998's My Romance. In addition, he recorded as a guest on dates by Elvin Jones and arranger Frank Mantooth. In fall 2000, Portrait of Kevin Mahogany was released, followed by the Motown-centric Pride & Joy in 2002, the self-explanatory Big Band in 2005, and 2015's The Vienna Affair, the latter recorded in its namesake city with a quartet of Austrian musicians. Mahogany died in December 2017 at his home in Kansas City; he was 59 years old.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/artist/kevin-mahogany-mn0000070477/biography
