This two-CD set has its interesting moments. Drummer Louie Bellson and his quintet (which also includes trumpeter Bobby Shew, George Young on tenor, pianist Willie Pickens and bassist Keter Betts) perform seven selections including Horace Silver's "Blowin' the Blues Away," George Young's "For Diz" and "When You Wish Upon a Star." The second CD has a 27-minute medley that pays tribute to drummers Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Shelly Manne and Chick Webb. In addition there is a nearly 34-minute "Jazzspeak" in which Bellson talks about the drummers, the many bandleaders that he has worked with and a variety of miscellaneous music-related subjects. Although interesting, much of it is probably not worth hearing twice. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/salute-mw0000648072

Louie Bellson - Don't Stop Now!

Styles: Jazz, Post Bop
Year: 1984
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 42:22
Size: 97,9 MB
Art: Front

(4:57)  1. Don't Stop Now!
(6:19)  2. Lover Man
(4:58)  3. Indian Summer
(5:12)  4. Cipriana
(5:15)  5. With Bells On
(5:05)  6. Darn That Dream
(7:16)  7. Three Ton Blues
(3:17)  8. Seven Come Eleven

Recorded in 1984 for Pete Christlieb's Bosco label, this outing by the Louie Bellson Orchestra has plenty of power, more variety than usual, and swings up a storm; half of the selections actually feature a small group from the orchestra. The big band tracks have spots for trumpeters Conte Candoli and Ron King, trombonists Carl Fontana and Andy Martin, tenor great Christlieb and drummer Bellson (who is showcased on Thad Jones' "With Bells On"), while the combo tracks put the focus on trumpeters Conte Candoli and Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Fonanta (featured on "Indian Summer") and Christlieb. This is a rather obscure and hard-to-find release, but is worth the search, for the musicians sound consistently inspired. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/dont-stop-now%21-mw0000694508

Louie Bellson, Blue Mitchell - Louie Bellson Jams With Blue Mitchell

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 44:34
Size: 102.0 MB
Styles: Bop
Year: 1979/1994
Art: Front

[6:43] 1. Melody For Thelma
[4:46] 2. Stein On Vine
[4:47] 3. Shave Tail
[5:57] 4. Gonga Din
[3:09] 5. I Wonder Why
[7:01] 6. Ballad Medley
[5:57] 7. Blue Invasion
[6:11] 8. A Gush Of Periwinkles

This CD reissue brings back one of Louie Bellson's better small-group dates for Pablo. In addition to the drummer/leader, his septet includes trumpeter Blue Mitchell (still in good form on one of his last recordings), the underrated but great tenor Pete Christlieb, pianist Ross Tompkins, guitarist Bob Bain, bassist Gary Pratt and percussionist Emil Richards. Most intriguing about the date (which mostly sticks to group originals) is that there is a three-song ballad medley comprised not of standards but of Bellson tunes. "Shave Tail" (an older song co-composed by Bellson and Charlie Shavers) is a highlight. ~Scott Yanow
