"This collection of covers of material from the 1970s and 80s by Ingrid James and The Global Collective is no nostalgic, sound-alike trip down memory lane. Nor is it an attempt to cash in on the musical flavour-of-the-month with squeaky adolescent vocals or rapping. It is a set of musically intelligent arrangements by trumpeter Paul Armstrong and multi-instrumentalist Todd Harrison performed by artists from quite literally around the world. The music draws together influences from South and Central America, jazz, bluegrass, folk and popular music. Such a project is only made possible (with a budget in the hundreds of thousands) through the advent of 21st century digital technology, and we are the luckier for it....Ingrid James' extraordinary range is showcased as her voice is variously warm and engaged, cool or contemplative, clear, or soft and hushed. Her diction is flawless... "The outstanding musicians in the Global Collective have asked themselves what these classic songs are really about and approached their material with fresh ears. The result is a refreshing new perspective on our musical past which points us towards a healthy musical future." ~Louise Denson

Other reviewers acknowledge the heartfelt warmth and intimate style that characterize her performances. Tony Backhouse from New Zealand says "Ingrid James floats and swings effortlessly through the changes with a tone of honey. As well as great technique, there's an engaging warmth to her delivery like a close friend smiling at you". David Bentley, music journalist says "You've probably heard these songs before - but never like this. Thoughtful, inventive and, above all, swinging, Ingrid squeezes every line for nuance and meaning. The impeccable phrasing and accurate intonation come almost as a bonus." Scott Yanow (Author of The Jazz Singers, The Great Jazz Guitarists, Jazz on Film and Jazz on Record 1917-1976) says “Ingrid is one of the top jazz singers from Australia…has a beautiful voice, a wide range, and the ability to sing difficult intervals with ease, hitting every note perfectly in-tune. She is an original improviser, always swings, and is skilled at embracing lyrics that she believes in”. Steve Robertson from Australia’s Portland Observer 2012 and Radio Presenter says “Ingrid is a singer whose note-perfect delivery and depth of lyrical expression has elevated her into the elite of Australia’s musical talents”. And after touring and recording with Downbeat’s 7 time Trombonist of the Year winner, Bill Watrous noted “If this were the 50’s Jazz era, Ingrid James would be performing alongside other greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. She is by far one of the best jazz vocalists I have ever worked with”.

Trajectoire is a collaboration between the French pianist composer Alexis Tcholakian and the Queensland based vocalist Ingrid James. Their paths crossed in France when she was performing in a Paris jazz club when he approached her to write lyrics to some of his melodies as part of a vocal project with other singers in France. After completion of several songs together it felt right for them to do an album and in June 2014 Trajectorie was recorded in Paris.

Consisting mostly of their original compositions (the one exception being a comely version of the Jimmy Rowles standard "The Peacocks" with lyrics by Norma Winstone) this vocally outstanding album is now available through Newmarket Music in Australia. Throughout the recording Tcholakian's pianoforte is flawless on every track. His world class trio accompanies him dextrously on every move, slipping and gliding through the various stories of love, disillusion, hope and hip jazz life like a Maserati manoeuvring the climbs and gradients of a curving mountainous path. There are highs and lows at every turn and Ms James is always in command vocally at the wheel of this transcendently impressive outing with her flawless technique and gilded timbre. Adding to this are some magical improvisational moments from the wind section especially Simon Span—Hanssen's tenor on several tracks and Mariane Bitran's flute on the title track. Miroslav Bukovsky's sympathetic flugelhorn on "Night Reflection" mourns wistfully on a soulful ode to the brevity of life. May their paths continue to cross in many harmonious musical journeys in the future. ~Barry O'Sullivan

Award-winning jazz singer Ingrid James and UK pianist John Reeves have recorded a duo album of contemporary and classic standards as well as material from the Beatles to the Beach Boys. The approach to much of the recording was inspired by 'live' performances where so often trying something for the first time delivers a unique arrangement and special qualities. They work as an organic unit, weaving melodies, textures and rhythms to express a personal interpretation of these songs and the endless possibilities they present. Circumflex is a stunning vocal and piano duo album full of live energy, warmth and deep emotion.
