Demis Roussos was born on June 15, 1946 in Alexandria, Egypt as Artemios Ventouris Roussos. He was raised in Egypt until his parents moved to Greece in the early 1960s after losing their possessions during the Suez Crisis.
He was best known for his solo hits in the 1970s and 80s, including Forever and Ever, Goodbye and Quand je t'aime. He was also a member of progressive rock group Aphrodite's Child. He was caught up in a plane hijacking when flight TWA 847 from Athens to Rome was hijacked by members of Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad in 1985. He and his third wife were held at gunpoint for five days before they were released. Some of his fellow passengers endured 17 days in captivity. For Demis the only way to get over this rather traumatic experience was to make music again. For that reason he went to Holland and recorded the single “Island Of Love”, which can be considered a comeback, in the spring of 1986. In 2010, Demis Roussos is back in Greece where he realizes one of his oldest dreams by performing at the antic theatre “Erodion”, a memorable concert for his country. He had not sang there since 1974 and the emotion between Demis and the Greek crowd is in its height.
His tour in South Africa in 2012 was memorable for all South Africans, as much as it was for Demis Roussos who realized how much people had not forgotten him there, since his latest appearance there during the Apartheid, in 1977.

Sorry Mat but we proud that he is GREEK!!!His parents were Greek too so he is not Egyptian as you wrote under this post but thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeletehey MusicLover, thx for the info. if the review says the artist is a citizen of a particular country, we will show that country in the post's 'labels', otherwise, if it indicates another country where he/she was born, that country's name will show in 'labels' for info purposes. a quick research at wikipedia shows he is indeed Greek. (Would love to visit beautiful Greece one of these days!)
ReplyDeletecuriously, the review of another post, that of Sebastian Chames, a few albums above this post, says he is 'Spanish-Argentinean' so both Spain and Argentina are in that post's 'labels'.
Hello Mat you are welcome here and i will be glad to help you if you ever want to visit our beautiful islands!!About D.Roussos of course was born in Egypt as NICOLE KIDMAN was born in Hawai but nobody called her as ''Haiiwaan'' but only as ''Australian''!!
ReplyDeleteDemis Roussos came back here as a teenager and met when he was 17 the later famous composer VANGELIS!!''Aphrodite's Child'' was a Greek progressive rock band formed in 1967, by Vangelis Papathanassiou, Demis Roussos .Greek music has big influence in his music as you can hear our national instrument called ''bouzouki'' in many songs of him as his big hit ''Goodbye my love goodbye''!!
Tell mr Sebastian Chames to listen his albums as ''On the Greek Side of My Mind''(1971) & ''The Greek""(1992).But its ok we are living in a period of the ''lost identities''!!Even there are people that are saying that ''Alexander The Great'' is not Greek so i expect anything to listen.....
Thank you.
