Kirk Lightsey has long been an underrated modern mainstream pianist. He has a fine workout on this trio set with bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Eddie Gladden from 1983. Of the six selections, Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and Joe Henderson's "Isotope" are best known, but the other four tunes (by Johnny Griffin, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and the obscure Rudolph Johnson) are rarely performed. The strong interplay between the musicians and the interesting material uplift the set above the average trio date.

  1. Yeah, I'll say (in agreement with your blurb writer) that Kirk Lightsey has been underrated. I used to hear him from time to time at now long-gone but still and forever lamented Bradley's on University Place in NYC, and it was always a pleasure. That would have been in the 80s. I even went out and bought a couple of the records back then. Isotope -- your posting of today -- was one of them. Another was called simply "Kirk Lighsey piano" -- with just those three words on the album cover against a kind of royal blue background. That vinyl of mine disappeared somewhere between Lower Manhattan and the Brazilian shores we've inhabited these last 15 years. But, just as it's always a thrill to discover new music on this fabulous and indispensable blog, it's also always a thrill to be reunited with old friends like this one, Isotope. I think I'll use your request box to see if you can perform the miracle of coming up with "Kirk Lightsey piano" as well. But, if you're out there anywhere, Kirk, thanks, man. Those evenings at Bradley's were great -- and unforgettable. And thanks as always to you, dear Giullia.
