Trumpet legend Harry Edison in a very cool setting – working here on an obscure quartet date that also features lots of work on Hammond from the great Bill Doggett! Edison rarely recorded with an organist, which makes the session already such a standout – and Doggett is great in the setting – playing with a more relaxed, flowing style than on his own romping records of the R&B years. Other players include Milt Hinton on bass and Oliver Jackson on drums – and the set's got some great muted ballads that really show off the sweet side of Edison's style. Titles include "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Imagination", "Yesterdays", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams".

Harry Edison? There is such a person? When I lived in New York and listened regularly to Phil Schaap’s daily “Bird Flight” tribute to Charlie Parker on WKCR, he was Harry Sweets Edison. Always. Hard now for me to think of him as anything else. (Blurb writer has gone only so far as to say that the disc contains some “great muted ballads that really show off the sweet side of” his style.) I had hoped, as I grew older (which I have done), that I would discover new young musicians for whom I would feel the same enthusiasm I do for the classics. In fact, I have happened on some new people I like – though, honestly, right now I can’t think who they are. My esteem for the classics, on the other hand, only grows greater. And Edison is one of the classics, and Bill Doggett, another classic, really shines here on the organ. Very nice collaboration. Very nice date. Thanks, as always.
ReplyDeleteVery slow songs with superb moody parts of organ by Bill Doggett. It makes me smile when I think it was released during the Chick Corea and other noisy jazz-rock stuff
