Jimmy Witherspoon is accompanied by a large orchestra arranged by Benny Golson for a set emphasizing slow tempos (even on "And the Angels Sing" and "Who's Sorry Now"), ballads and blues. The one-time meeting between guitarists Tal Farlow and Lenny Breau came about because Lorenzo DeStefano, who was making a PBS documentary (Talmage Farlow) in 1980, wanted a meeting between the veteran and a rising star. Farlow suggested Breau, and an invitation was extended and immediately accepted by the younger man. After the musicians spent time conversing in Farlow's New Jersey home, they moved to The Sign of the Times, a small nightclub in the tiny town of Rumson, to weave their musical magic. Although this was their first and only performance together, they complement one another's playing as if they had worked as a regular duo. Breau, on his seven-string guitar, is a bundle of energy most of the time, with flurries of notes accompanied by his flawless rhythm. Of course, the senior player is no slouch as a soloist on any of the eight standards heard on this CD, which include "I Love You," "My Funny Valentine," and "What Is This Thing Called Love?" Bassist Lynn Christie and drummer Nat Garrantano are added for the smoking interpretations of "All the Things You Are" and "Cherokee." There's also a brief excerpt of a conversation between Breau and Farlow in the middle of the disc, during which Breau explains a bit about his technique and his familiarity with Farlow's recordings. It's too bad that this enjoyable session was only a one-time affair. ~Ken Dryden

Throughout the years, Danish jazz has been blessed with a host of talented bassists such as Bo Stief, Jesper Lundgaard and Jesper Bodilsen, but one name, in particular, has reached across the country's borders and become synonymous with virtuosity and melodic invention. The late Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen was most famous, perhaps, for playing with Oscar Peterson and Ed Thigpen in what has to be one of the legendary pianist's most successful formations. The shadow of the great Dane has, however, loomed largely over the aesthetic landscape of Danish jazz and no one has really been able to take his place in terms of stylistic innovation until now. 

If anything, the 2009 Copenhagen Jazz Festival proved that a shift in paradigm has taken place in Danish jazz. This change in aesthetic can, in many ways, be seen as embodied in the playing of the young bassist Anders Christensen. Whereas the strength of Ørsted Pedersen was his lightning fast figures and impeccably tight swing, Christensen makes a virtue out of playing slower and with fewer notes. Unlike Ørsted Pedersen, he doesn't fill the empty space; he plays around it, giving his sound a loose, almost floating feeling that still manages to groove. The reference to tradition is also different. If Ørsted Pedersen was a traditionalist whose pillars were Danish folksong and the standards, Christensen is much more eclectic in his choice of repertoire. This is evident on his long-awaited debut, Dear Someone, which finds him enlisting iconoclastic drummer Paul Motianand one of the most talked-about pianists of the moment, Aaron Parks.

The cover, with its allusion to iconic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan's The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (Columbia, 1963), speaks clearly of the post-modern nature of an album whose title track isn't a standard but a country-waltz by folksinger Gillian Welch. But Christensen doesn't shun classics; in fact, the trio plays a pretty, swinging version of "Stompin' at the Savoy." The highlights of the album are three Motian compositions: "Split Decision," "Arabesque" and "Once Around the Park" which all display the drummer's uncanny knack for combining abstract swing and impressionistic lyricism. Parks, like Christensen, is an eminent interpreter of Motian's music, and his reading of "Arabesque" is one of the most beautiful versions of this melancholy ballad committed to record. There is a variety of genres and moods on Dear Someone, and Christensen gently guides his trio through them all. Anna Sise grew up in Malmö and Värnamo. She trained at the Theatre Academy in Stockholm 1996-2000.  She freelances worked at Uppsala City Theatre and the Stockholm City Theatre , the Royal Dramatic Theatre , the Göta Lejon , Stockholm Music Drama Ensemble and the Playhouse Theatre. She played one of the main characters in the drama series Skeppsholmen , which appeared in Swedish Television between 2002 and 2004. Anna Sise debuted in 2006 with the album Beppe shoebox containing music with previously unreleased texts by Beppe Wolgers . It was followed up years after the But Beautiful released in Japan (Spice of Life). Anna Sise has sung in various configurations, on stages, clubs, concert halls and festivals around Sweden, but also Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Malaysia and Thailand. 

She has made a summer tour with Jerry Williams , Rip It Up-Jerry Williams and Friends, and starred in Jerry Williams julföreställning at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm winter of 2011. She also appeared as a performer and actor Jerry Williams farewell performance Jerry Williams-The Farewell Show which premiered in spring 2013 at Cirkus in Stockholm. Anna Sise has also toured with concert performance Fine and Mellow is a tribute to the singer Billie Holiday .

Bassist Charlie Haden has been a masterful contributor to everything from Ornette Coleman's pioneering outside ensembles and Keith Jarrett's slashing groups to his own freewheeling, nearly anarchic Liberation Music Orchestra. Haden's also proven the ideal duet partner, having teamed with pianist Hampton Hawes, Coleman, guitarist Pat Metheny and the flamboyant Cuban keyboardist Gonzalo Rubalcaba on previous releases. On Nocturne, Haden and Rubalcaba aren't joining forces on some fierce encounter or groundbreaking project. Instead, they are exploring another of Haden's passions, the bolero, in both its Cuban and Mexican variations. These are 11 lush, gorgeous, highly sensual pieces featuring, in addition to Haden's prodigious bass and Rubalcaba's disciplined yet spicy piano, excellent rhythmic touches from Ignacio Berroa and sensitive guest contributions from four major players.

Guitarist Pat Metheny displays a soft, beguiling side on "Noche de Ronda," while David Sanchez and Joe Lovano show they can play breezy tenor-sax solos as well as boisterous ones on their tunes. The ringer proves to be violinist Federico Britos Ruiz, however. His light playing almost lulls the listener to sleep at times, yet he has a rich, vivid sound on his three numbers. Rubalcaba on many occasions has been more flash than invention, but there are no wasted notes or empty rhythmic barrages on Nocturne. He is careful never to clash with Haden, who guides the band through these pieces with grace and care. Haden doesn't try to dominate any song, yet is very much at the center of each number, either aiding the soloist or interacting with Berroa to ably punctuate or conclude the composition. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about this date, although it arguably might have been even better if a first-class vocalist like Compay Segundo had been on board. The match-up of neo-pop crooner Jack Jones with composer Michel Legrand is a felicitous one, especially given that this album was recorded in Paris with Legrand arranging and conducting. The result is that the treatment of familiar songs such as "The Windmills Of Your Mind" and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" is less gimmicky than usual: Jones and Legrand slow "Windmills" down, and treat "What Are You Doing" in a more melancholy-than-usual manner. Elsewhere, Legrand's blues and jazz influences are on display, notably on "Blue, Green, Gray And Gone." 

Marilyn and Alan Bergman's lugubrious lyrics sometimes overstate the wistful tone of Legrand' s melodies, but Jones, by keeping his emotions in check, brings the two into harmony. The liner notes claim this is the singer's favorite of his own albums, and it is certainly one of his least compromised. So often, he has tried on record to balance his pop roots with the commercial demands of contemporary pop-rock; here, he is going all out in one particular style, and the approach works for him. This SteepleChase set from the Dave Stryker (and virtually everything recorded by organist Joey DeFrancesco), is very much a throwback to the 1960s. Stryker and DeFrancesco had never played together before, but the repertoire, which includes the "So What"-based "Eastern Standard Time," an original blues tune familiar to just about everyone, along with seven standards. The organist's constant riffing and enthusiastic soloing (which at this time was starting to develop more of a distinctive personality beyond Jimmy Smith) constantly inspire Stryker to come up with fiery statements of his own; it is to his credit that he never sounds like a sideman in his own group. With drummer Adam Nussbaum offering solid support, this set will be enjoyed by bop and straight-ahead jazz organ fans. ~Scott Yanow

The first trumpeter emerging after Clifford Brown's death to gain his own sound, Booker Little had a tremendous amount of potential before his premature death. He began on trumpet when he was 12 and played with Johnny Griffin and the MJT + 3 while attending the Chicago Conservatory. Little was with Max Roach (1958-1959) and then freelanced in New York. He recorded with Roach and Abbey Lincoln, was on John Coltrane's Africa/Brass album, and was well-documented during a July 1961 gig at the Five Spot with Eric Dolphy. Little had a memorable melancholy sound and his interval jumps looked toward the avant-garde, but he also swung like a hard bopper. Booker Little led four sessions (one album apiece for United Artists, Time, Candid, and Bethlehem), but died of uremia at the age of 23, a particularly tragic loss. ~bio by Scott Yanow

By 1968, Motown had Wonder pegged as a soul-pop shouter, so his harmonica instrumental of "Alfie," and the movie theme that had been a Top 15 hit for Dionne Warwick in 1967 was released under another name -- his own spelled backwards and on a different record label. This album, issued after that single made number 66 on the pop chart, consists of more harmonica instrumentals, everything from "A House Is Not a Home" to "Grazing in the Grass," and is enough to convince you that Wonder, who, after all, broke through playing harmonica, is a tuneful player of the instrument, more a Larry Adler than a Bob Dylan. Nevertheless, this is a minor item in the Wonder catalog. ~William Ruhlmann

Sarah Vaughan's sole small-group recording with pianist Jimmy Rowles (aside from a pair of tribute albums to Duke Ellington in 1979) was recorded live at an unlisted location in 1974 for Mainstream. Although Rowles proves himself to be a consummate accompanist, and Vaughan is in her usual outstanding form, excessive reverb is used on several of the tracks, giving the album a somewhat cavernous sound. The singer's interest in a variety of material is evident, including chestnuts like "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," and W.C. Handy's "Morning Star," along with the then-current pop hit "A House is Not a Home" (which is strangely credited to a another pair rather than its actual composers, Burt Bacharach and Hal David), and Jimmy Rowles' campy collaboration with Johnny Mercer, "Frasier (The Sensuous Lion)." Tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards and trumpeter Al Aarons join Vaughan and her quartet on three selections. This LP, which has only been reissued in Japan, is worth picking up, in spite of the questionable production.

Bobby Hackett was one of the true class acts in space age pop. His wistful trumpet solos added a unique and essential touch to music by everyone from Glenn Miller to Jackie Gleason to Dizzy Gillespie. Before he died of a heart attack just short of collecting Social Security, he joked that "I've been working steady since I was 14."

Hackett actually started out playing guitar as much as trumpet, and when working for Glenn Miller in the early 1940s, he only occasionally got to bring out his horn. Despite this fact, he got the spotlight solo on "String of Pearls" when MGM made The Glenn Miller Story, starring James Stewart (and Henry Mancini arrangements). Hackett worked swing, Dixieland, and bebop, depending on the gig, and earned a peerless reputation regardless of the setting. Jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote that Hackett had "a consistent habit of unceremoniously putting all the notes in the right place at the right time."

That reputation led Jackie Gleason to ask for Hackett by name when he was putting his first easy listening album together. He gave Hackett free rein to improvise over the melody, and a distant and fading coda of Hackett's playing closed out many a Gleason number. Hackett was for several years the only performer to be mentioned by name on Gleason's album. Hackett later returned the compliment, commenting only half-jokingly, "I got my music lessons from Jackie Gleason." After Hackett moved on to other things, Gleason enlisted Harry "Sweets" Edison (and later, Don Goldie) to reproduce Hackett's sound.

Hackett put out a number of albums under his own name on a variety of labels. For the most part, these are imitation Gleason albums, only with Hackett featured a little more prominently. He also did an occasional straight jazz album, but not as often as most of his fans would have liked.

He shifted away from easy listening toward the end of his career, when he moved from New York City to Cape Cod. He became a regular at the legendary Colorado Jazz Parties and appearing with small combos in New York Boston. If Hackett tended to be pretty undiscriminating in his choice of what he played on, the same can't be said of his performances. Bobby Hackett was one of the few performers who truly shaped the sound of easy listening and space age pop.

Aos 9 anos, Monique fez sua primeira apresentação, quando participou de um Festival de Música representando o seu colégio, à frente de um coral de 40 crianças. Na adolescência estudou canto lírico e popular, piano, aprendeu a tocar violão com seu irmão Denny Kessous, e começou a compor. Decidida a seguir carreira musical, fez seu primeiro show em 2001 no Teatro Ipanema aonde pela primeira vez mostrou suas composições.

Em seguida, começou a cantar em algumas bandas e formou o grupo Entretantos, com Denny no violão, o guitarrista João Arruda e a percussionista Jadna Zimmerman, passando a se apresentar em bares e casas noturnas, cantando música brasileira. Elogiada pelo produtor musical Alberto Rosenblit, após um show seu, foi convidada por ele a gravar uma demo. Ao ouvir sua voz, Roberto Menescal fez uma música para ela cantar, chamada Comunique-se, que mais tarde ganhou letra de Monique.

Em 2005, foi chamada por Menescal para gravar o projeto “Liverpool Bossa”(Albatroz), lançado em julho de 2007 no Brasil, Taiwan, Colômbia e Argentina.

Marking the very first pairing of these two giants of Jazz, Our Delight brings together two legends, saxophonist James Moody and pianist Hank Jones in a performance with one purpose, to delight jazz audiences with the music of Tadd Dameron and Dizzy Gillespie. The late great trumpeter took Moody under his wing and became his mentor, providing a jazz education that gives the saxophonist a unique perspective of Gillespie's music. Jones traveled a different path, gaining an enrichment of jazz by performing with a virtual "Who's Who" of musicians from Detroit to New York, from the '40s to the present. Both men are indeed masters of their craft as is evident from the music contained in this historic recording. Rounding out The James Moody and Hank Jones Quartet are bassist Todd Coolman and drummer Adam Nussbaum, who both felt fortunate, as Coolman writes "to have perhaps absorbed at least an ounce of Moody's and Jones' expertise" on this remarkable session. Remarkable because the music swings in true bop fashion, with Moody leading the way with sharp tenor solos throughout. 

However, Jones and the rest of the band are not far behind in claiming their own portion of the music. While the majority of the twelve tunes are from Dameron and Gillespie, there are a select few charts from others, including the familiar Heyman/Green standard "Body & Soul," Moody's own "Darben the Red Foxx" and Jimmy Heath's "Moody's Groove," which provides a bonus vocal performance by Roberta Gambarini. But the music kicks off with Moody's brisk read of Dameron's title tune, leading to Gillespie's minor blues "Birk's Works" where both masters display their ample chops. The duo deliver a memorable performance on the beautifully haunting ballad "Soul Trane" as Moody blows softly to Nussbaum's delicate brush strokes, in turn giving way to Jones, who comes through with delicious piano lines. The program comes to a close with "Moody's Groove," but not before the band runs through a quick rendition of "Woody N' You," and a laid back read of "Old Folks" which captures Moody on the flute. James Moody and Hank Jones combine here to make, as the liner notes state, "a cohesive, solid and deep musical statement" that seems to convey a message: that this historic recording was in many ways Our Delight to perform. The Dave Weckl Acoustic Band represents the realization of a dream. In 2013, while touring with Mike Stern, Dave was reintroduced to playing with the amazing Makoto Ozone. Dave met Makoto in the '80s, and Makoto blew Dave away during this tour! Each night, Mike would give some space for Dave, Makoto, and Tom Kennedy to improvise a song. The guys would take this opportunity to really stretch out! The chemistry was amazing. At some point, Mike would start to noodle on his guitar; to come back in and continue the show. But the trio was having so much fun! So, one night, Dave yelled "stay out!" to Mike while the trio was jamming. That little jam became a song on this record - and it is aptly titled "Stay Out." :) This record is loaded with straight ahead jazz, a little funk, a little Latin, and more. This is how sax master Steve Wilson describes the origins of Wilsonian’s Grain, the ensemble of old friends formed back in 2008. He was interested in revisiting some of his earlier work that he felt could use some further exploration, he explains, with what he calls “a new band of old friends. It’s like putting on old socks with new shoes.” While I’m not quite sure I buy the analogy, I am quite sure I buy the music. That is if the quartet’s debut album, a live set recorded last May at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard, is any indication of what they are capable of. Forgive me but, I’m tempted to say the shoes fit, and resisting temptation was never my strong point.

Steve Wilson & Wilsonian’s Grain Live in New York: The Vanguard Sessions, set for release in March, has Wilson heading up a talented crew of inventive musicians including pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Bill Stewart in a seven-track bop attack built atop the musical foundation laid down by the giants of the past. Wilson’s “old shoes” can stand with the best. Listen to Evans’ piano on his original composition “Spot It You Got It.” Listen to Stewart’s killer solo work on Joe Chamber’s “Patterns” which closes the album. Listen to Okegwo on Wilson’s “Perry Street.” They do great solo work throughout, but when they work together, they shine.

Thelonious Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” makes for a powerful opening number and sets the tone for the rest of the set. Wilson and the Grain take no prisoners. The track opens with the bass, and then the sax takes the theme, while the drums drive the action. It is an explosive performance, with some stunning solo work from Wilson and Evans. Wilson’s original pieces, “Chrysalis” and “Spheresophically” and Migiwa Miyajima’s “If I Were a Wind of Spring” complete the hour-long set. ~Jack Goodstein

For more than 25 years Barbora Tellinger has been a professional singer, composer, teacher, voice artist and actress throughout Southern Africa, on stages and in studios, in musicals, cabaret, pop, rock and jazz bands.

Her career began in the protest theatre days of the Black Sun in 1980s Johannesburg, moved through the revolutionary Afrikaans Voelvry movement, onto the famous NO.58 in Hillbrow, enjoyed many collaborations with some of the country’s finest musicians and has been focused on jazz and education since 2005.

She has performed on stages from Cape Town to Windhoek, NAPAC, PACT the Civic, The State Theatre, CAPAB and PACOFS, Ellis Park and the Sun City Superbowl.
It might be quicker here to name the musicians she hasn’t worked with, and easier to name the studios she hasn’t worked in.
Apart from the many recordings with other artists, personal studio projects include a solo album – Barbie and the Dolls, BLOMKRAG – Boere Country, and two albums of Deep Fine Leg, an accoustic harmony ensemble.

For three years she was jazz vocal lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology School of Music, and has been teaching at the University of Pretoria since 2008.
A respected singer and vocal coach, her non-contrived vocal technique has been adopted by many professionals and teachers throughout Southern Africa and beyond. Her passion for jazz has made her an effective teacher with several successful jazz graduates now working in the music industry. She has also trained numerous recording and theatrical artists.

In 2012 she released the album – Live at the Musaion, a Jazz Recital. Collaborating with some of the greats – John Fresk, Marc Duby, Rob Watson – it cemented her reputation as a formidable force in the South African jazz arena.
The following year brought her next album – Jazz, Live 2012.
In 2014 she completed a studio album with her pianist of preference, John Fresk. Tellinger & Fresk, DEUCE, is available through iTunes and at live performances.

Tellinger & Fresk perform live throughout the country, and their playful and intimate shows continue to thrill audiences far and wide.

Guitarists Stanley Jordan and Kevin Eubanks team up for the 2015 Mack Avenue release Duets. An intimate, relaxed album, Duets features the esteemed journeyman artists playing both acoustic and electric instruments on a handful of classic standards, originals, and newer pop tunes. Rather than a cutting session, Duets works more as a laid-back conversation in which both musicians revel in the warmth of each other's sound. While they share a similar style, favoring a clean, unaffected approach to the guitar, there are enough differences in each player's sounds to easily distinguish them on a given track. Jordan favors his innovative touch and tap technique, while Eubanks digs deep into his rounded, woody sound; both of them employ various dynamic volume swells and neck slides. Eubanks and Jordan have led varied, highly successful careers playing music that's often difficult to pin down, touching upon jazz, fusion, instrumental pop, classical, and R&B. Not surprisingly, Duets is marked by this eclecticism and features a wide-ranging list of songs from across the musical spectrum. Primarily, they accompany each other on guitar, but on a handful of tracks, including the duo's soulful rendition of Adele's "Someone Like You," Jordan plays piano and guitar at the same time to wonderful effect. The piano and guitar technique also adds layers of harmonic depth to their poignant, measured arrangement of Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born." Interestingly, Jordan sets his guitar aside completely, choosing instead to fully embrace his inner Bill Evans and accompany Eubanks on piano on their soulful, yearning version of Miles Davis' "Blue in Green." Also engaging are the pair's reworkings of unexpected contemporary pop songs like Ellie Goulding's "Lights"; an electronic pop anthem, Jordan and Eubanks deftly strip the song down to a few simple melodic motifs that capture the atmospheric vibe of Goulding's original, while shading the song with a nuanced soul-jazz romanticism. Ultimately, it’s that kind of creativity and technical skill, matched by Jordan and Eubanks' passion for sound, that make Duets such an enveloping listen.

The pianist, composer, and singer Clara h. k. (* 1989 in Unna) lives in Berlin. In the years 1998 to 2006, she won several times at the competitions "Jugend jazzt" and "Jugend musiziert" at the country level.

From 2006 to 2009, she was a member of the Landesjugendjazzorchester NRW. Toured it with the Big Band to Southeast Asia, Malta, Israel and Estonia. Later she was the pianist in the switched (Bujazzo).

From 2009 to 2013, she studied piano at the jazz Institute Berlin (Hanns Eisler/UdK) at Hubert nut, Wolfgang Köhler, Susanne Grützmann, David Friedman, Greg Cohen and John Hollenbeck. Parallel to the studies she took further lessons in singing and composition. In October 2014, it has begun her master's degree in composition at the Wolf Kerschek HfMT Hamburg. Within the framework of cooperation between the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and the NDR will take on 2016 their compositions Big Band with the NDR.

She won the 2011 "Jazz Baltica Prize" with her own trio. Her solo LP "One Hundred Dreams" on the label "Edition lane play" on vinyl was released in may 2012. The debut album of Clara h k followed by trios "not red, not white, not blue".

2013 Haber Kamp went with actor and singer Gustav Peter Wöhler and his German-speaking program "About me" on tour. The eponymous album was released in the spring of 2013 on the label Kurt music.

Since 2012 plays and touring it with the songwriter and artist Susanne "the Popette" Betancor.

The second album of Clara h. k. trio "You Sea!" will appear on March 20, 2015 on the label LAIKA of records.
