Hungarian-born pianist and keyboardist Peter Horvath performs with the who­is­who of jazz such as Victor Bailey, Lenny White, Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Marcus Miller, and many more. While he is a in demand recording musician on numerous albums his solo career has only seen two albums yet. His debut album Foreign Matter (1995) and his sophomore album Absolute Reality.

Peter has assembled for the recordings of his new album a great amount of luminaries Victor Bailey, Marc Van Wageningen and Larry Kimpel (bass), Ricky Lawson and Lenny White (drums), Dean Brown and Ray Orbiedo (guitar), Norbert Stachel (sax), Randy Brecker (trumpet) among many others.

Peter Horvath has composed all tracks, some in collaboration with Norbert Stachel. The album shows up with Absolute Reality. A funky horn arrangement in the style of Tower of Power or East Bay Soul is the launching platform for Peters' rocket like journey over the keys of his grand piano.

Carla comes smoothly like silk with Horvath's intimate Rhodes piano and Bob Mintzer on tenor saxophone. Escape From Oakland is without any doubt a tour de par force. All musicians perform with great speed without neglecting melody, arrangement and improvising.

On Nassau Nights Peter reveals his affinity for smooth jazz and the influence of Fourplay on his work. Elegant performance on Rhodes piano, a harmonic horn arrangement and Kenny Washington on vocals are clear pluses. Waltz For Ella fosters in the contemporary jazz realm, while Latin rhythm elements and Marc Van Wageningen on bass give this fast paced piece some pepper. The tune is dedicated to his daughter Ella Nicole Horvath.

When Victor Bailey on bass, Ricky Lawson on drums, Ray Obiedo on guitar meet Peter Horvath on Rhodes then Fake Out gets a big dose of funk. Norbert Stachel on various brass and flute delivers a fine garnish. Miss You walks the line between jazz and melody, a musical journey with a deep expression of sadness and missing, dedicated to his mom, Matrai Zsuzsa, a great Hungarian singer.

Sardegna is an ode to the Italian island. Elegant Rhodes improvisation and a brass arrangement in the style of EWF are the highlight of this tune.

Foreign Matter dives into the bebop roots and when Peter begins to improvise, it can get a fast and wild ride. Final tune is a solo piano piece entitled Braden's Song and dedicated to his son Braden Michael Horvath.

With Absolute Reality Peter Horvath has put his whole personality and passion into this work. An eclectic album of the deserving wider recognition category.

Bay-area vocalist Nicolas Bearde belongs to an exclusive club: male jazz singers. I suspect, being scientifically minded, that submissions from male jazz singers make up approximately 10% of the music I receive for review. While in may be impolitic to discuss, it remains a fact. Not only are there few male jazz singers, there a fewer good male jazz singers...and that number continues to dwindle. Gratefully, Bearde has emerged follow the release of four previous recordings on his own Right Groove Records, as a unique voice bearing unique influences. Within Bearde's "buttery baritone" are equal parts Lou Rawls and Johnny Hartman with a trace of Nat King Cole. Bearde's deft management of these influences result in his seamless tone and delivery coupled with an acute harmonic sense.

Invitation is produced by the familiar name of Nat Adderley, Jr. who doubles as pianist on the lion's share of pieces. Bearde's support here, by three separate bands, all employ a jazz piano rhythm section supplemented with a woodwind. This lends a welcome consistency to a disc that could have otherwise suffered from a sonic disjointedness. Bearde is a exceptional balladeer as evidenced on "Come Back to Me," a decidedly non-Bossa "Dindi," and a ravishing "Lush Life." Alto saxophonist Vincent Herring joins Bearde on three cuts, most notable, a bright "Nature Boy," that summons Nat King Cole's restless spirit. Bearde offers an interesting alternative to singers like Kurt Elling and Gregory Porter in that he is more of a traditionalist who has the chops to do more demanding things but wisely chooses to redouble his creative investment in singing his songs better than more technically provocative. ~By C. Billy Cobham performs live in Riazzino, Switzerland in 1981.

Celebrated as one of jazz fusion's best percussionist, Billy Cobham rose to prominence during the late 1960s with Miles Davis as a drummer known for his power and precision.

Born in Panama he grew up in New York where he gradated from High School of Music and Art in 1962.

After three years of Military service ending in 1968, he played for a year with Horace Silver and also worked at the time with Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, and Shirley Scott.

Billy Cobham toured extensively during the early '70s after appearing on John McLaughlin's album "My Goal's Beyond" and in 1971 Cobham and McLaughlin formed the "Mahavishnu Orchestra."

He went on to record a number of solo albums to great acclaim including "Crosswinds" and "Total Eclipse" both in 1974 and moved to Switzerland later in the decade.

In 1980 Cobham was a member of the "Jack Bruce & Friends" band before forming "Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie" the following year.

Her specialty is America’s favorite music, from decades past to the present. In a four-year, critically acclaimed, run of The Vintage Voice, she sang the songs of America’s Greatest Generation. On tour with The Wonderelles, she and her co-stars channeled the music and moods of the famous “girl groups.” She currently tours the nation as the star of several retro-music productions. Femme Fatale: Music, Movies, and Mayhem brings film noir, its seedy characters, and memorable music to life and to the stage. Her noir vocals are featured, as she sings the character of Kat, on the video game Contrast, released in 2013 by Compulsion Games and down-loaded nearly 2 million times.

Laura Ellis has recorded two CD’s. Contemporary vocal jazz album, Here Lies Love, was produced by Alan Paul. Her 2011 release, Femme Fatale, features the classic songs from the dangerous dames of film noir. Her 2015 release, Broken Lovely, with musical direction by John Rodby, features Laura Ellis at her creative best, singing songs of the heart – broken, mending, and free.

Al Caiola is a guitarist who initially made his reputation as a session musician, playing on records made by Percy Faith and Andre Kostelanetz, among others. Caiola was the conductor and arranger for United Artists Records in the late '40s and early '50s. After leaving UA, he signed with RCA, where he released a number of singles in the '50s. In the early '60s, he went back to United Artists, which is where he scored his first hit with the theme to the film The Magnificent Seven. The single peaked at 35 in early 1961 and it was quickly followed by the theme to the television series Bonanza, which climbed to number 19. For the rest of the '60s, Caiola released a number of easy listening instrumental albums. During the decade he also hosted a television show, which was only aired for a short while. A full 10 years after its recording, The Duets, produced as a promotional CD for Bang & Olufsen, had still not been released commercially. The music salutes Duke Ellington, with 10 of 12 tunes composed by him. "Caravan" is a dazzling performance as Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen supports pianist Mulgrew Miller with an unbelievable virtuosic ostinato bass figure during the A-parts of the theme. The tempo is fast, making it all the more incredible that every note stands distinct in the sound picture. Throughout, NHOP plays with infectious drive and swing, both as accompanist and as soloist, which inspires Miller to great heights as well. Scott Colley's writing reaches new heights on this very fine record. Joined by Chris Potter on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Bill Carrothers on piano, and Bill Stewart on drums, the bassist delivers some of his most memorable compositions to date. "The End and the Beginning," an uncommonly serene ballad, stands out among the others. But "Out of the Void" is also excellent, as are the hip title track and the veiled Cole Porter salute "Is What It Is." (Carrothers lays out on these latter two.) Potter and Stewart also contribute one composition each, and the quartet runs down Charlie Parker's classic blowing vehicle "Segment," with the drums soloing first -- not something you hear every day. Although we often think of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova material as a kind of jazz, it isn't really, although he was familiar with the genre and often used its inflections and moods. With this album, however, Jobim definitely becomes jazzy. Guitarist Mario Adnet set out to do two things — keep the Brazilian roots of the music faithfully intact, but also give jazz arrangements, including horns, to the pieces, some of which have rarely been heard. He's succeeded beautifully in both aims. His charts capture the subtle melodies and gorgeous sprung rhythms, but offer a full sound, with room for improvisation. Kudos, too, to the band, who play superbly throughout, while the singing is understated (even that of Joyce on "Paulo Voo Livre"), keeping the focus firmly on the instrumentalists. Adnet is obviously a scholar of Jobim's work, and a passionate fan, with a deep desire to bring more people to Jobim's music, and to highlight the jazz elements in it. It becomes more than an academic exercise, and the lulling, often beautiful sound is filled with little inventions that propel it along.

Lola Haag is a native of Wisconsin who has been living in California for most of her adult life. Early influences were the great female jazz singers including Ella, Sarah, Peggy Dinah and so many others. She studied the performers who were entertainers, those who really knew how to relate to their audiences. Her musical tastes run from the
great American Songbook and the fabulous songwriters of that era to the outstanding contemporary songwriters of today from Jazz to Broadway.

Lola loves to sign. When she was growing up she was teased by her siblings that she would sing along with anything, including the instrumentals! Her grandmother fibbed and told her that eating burnt toast would give you a good singing voice. She ate all the family’s toast scraps for years.

Prior to starting a Jazz recording and performing career, Lola pursued her love of the American Musical Theatre playing many lead roles including: Mama Rose in “Gypsy”, Anna in “The King And I”, Adelaide in “Guys & Dolls”, Guinevere in “Camelot” and many others. She directed a youth theater for over 10 years, teaching children and teens acting, singing and performing skills.

During this time, Lola worked on perfecting her craft as a singer and entertainer and longed for the day when she could share her love for the greatest music ever written with the Jazz Club circuit. She began appearing in clubs all over California developing her “chops” on the music of Cole Porter, Stevie Wonder, Gershwin, Billy Joel, Billy Strayhorn, Ellington and others. Her club experiences let to recording opportunities.

She recorded her first Jazz CD, “A Tribute to Sarah Vaughan” which featured the Jerome Kern song “All The Things You Are” and Sarah’s hit “Whatever Lola Wants”, which Lola has adopted as her own signature song. Lola’s version was one of the top Jazz vocal downloads in iTunes for many months.

Her second Jazz CD pays homage to the great Billie Holiday. In her own style, Lola’s version
of “God Bless The Child” really shows the depth of her delivery. Her interpretation of Duke Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood” and the ballad “He’s Funny That Way” are gems that highlight Lola’s relaxed style.

Released in July 2013 is Lola’s latest CD “Here I Go Again…” It is a collection of audience favorites from her live Jazz performances. The album has a light swingin’ style and features many familiar songs, including a samba version of “I’ve Grown Accustomed To his Face” to a unique smooth groove version of Billy Joel’s “New York State Of Mind”. The final tune on the album is a new rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. It gives the listener a chance to hear Lola display the vocal power that is a hallmark of her live shows.

Crandall’s style of playing piano is clearly jazz, but there’s a warmth that pervades throughout his playing—when performing “live”, on his trio albums, his daughter’s vocal albums, and now on this new solo album, “Buddy Nowhere” 1930s.

It began in the Midwest heartland of the U.S.—specifically Chicago where he was first raised—with the nurturing encouragement of his music-loving, piano playing father, Robert. Maybe “Buddy Nowhere” is a return to musical roots of sorts for Rich, who went on to forge his own jazz path through Wisconsin and Michigan before breaking loose to San Francisco and finally Honolulu. That’s where he's settled, married, and passed the musical torch to daughter Angela.

“Clear melodic lines, good time, and rich chords are what communicate best for me,” says Crandall. “Popular appeal’s a trap. Playing in a way that seeks—reaches out beyond one’s ego—is what’s crucial for musical language to communicate, I think.”

Crandall adds…“Music is fantasy—and I believe ‘Buddy Nowhere’ subtly and concisely captures my own fantasies surrounding these song favorites…from a time period way before my own.”

Hello everyone, and thank you for stopping by. I’m David Gonzalez, a man some might say is a wearer of many hats. Well, my favorite “hat” has been that of a jazz vocalist.

Over the past four plus decades I’ve shared the stage with musicians who performed with Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker, George Shearing, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente to vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn ,Billie Holliday and of course, me.

Those were memorable times and over the past several years, I have added to those memorable times with performances with some wonderful jazz musicians in New Orleans. So much so, that for the past three years I’ve been working on a recording project that will feature three different ensembles of New Orleans jazz musicians.

The first ensemble features a tribute to New Orleans that I composed along with two other songs with Charlie Miller (Dr. John, Thelonius Monk, Machito, Larry Harlow, Chuck Mangione…), Darrel “Sugar Bear” Francis (the “hardest working man in show business”) and Eric Robinson (a gifted guitarist). I even persuaded Charlie Miller to sing a “New Orleans” song!

The second ensemble features Thaddius Richard, piano (has a platinum and gold record for his time with Paul McCartney and Wings), Richard Moten, bass, Gerald French, drums, and for one song, trombonist Rick Trolsen.

The third ensemble features Lawrence Sieberth, piano, Richard Moten, bass, Gerald French, drums, Andrew Baham, trumpet, and Alexey Marti (from Cuba), latin percussion.

This was indeed a labor of love and I hope you will enjoy this "Jazz Gumbo" experience. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

from Jacopo Bazzarri and composed by Bazzarri and Fabbri togheter.
