The band have undertaken extensive tours both at home and abroad, playing regularly at Holiday venues, Military Establishments, etc. Following their sell-out tour of Denmark, The Firebirds were invited to top the bill at the Messan Music Festival in the former capital of Yugoslavia and have since entertained passenger's on four Mediterranean Cruises.

To date, the band have released three singles and twelve albums. The last five recorded in their own studio and on their own label 'Rockville Records' include a Rock'n'Roll Special with Linda Gail Lewis the sister of 'The Killer' Jerry Lee, and two Doo Wop albums - the second featuring guest vocalist Den Hegarty of 'Darts' fame. All our merchandise and albums are available worldwide as well on digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

In 2000 the band made their first trip to the USA playing venues in Memphis and Las Vegas, and in 2002 were honoured to be invited back to play at the Carl Perkins Civic Centre in Jackson, Tennessee. This huge event marked 50 years of the Sun record label and the 25th anniversary of the death of Elvis.

The Firebirds have played the Paris Music Festival and Corporate functions in Switzerland, Italy and Denmark. At home, the Corporate events, amongst others, saw the band entertaining guests for the Priory Group, the David Lloyd Leisure Company and the Royal College of GP's Annual Ball.

Doug Munro is the great nephew of Harry Warren who was the first major American songwriter to compose specifically for films. All the tunes on this CD are from movies with the exception of two Munro originals, "Blues For Harry" and "You Again" and barring those two and "Nagasaki," were all written in the 1930s and 1940s.

The music is played in the swinging style of The Quintet Of The Hot Club Of France, whose most famous stars, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, were surely the greatest innovators of this genre. The recordings were organised in four sessions between June and August 2016, with notable guitarist Howard Alden present on "Serenade In Blue" and "Lullaby Of Broadway."

"Nagasaki" and "We're In The Money" include vocals copying a megaphone style of singing that do nothing to improve the songs and might well irritate. "Chatanooga Choo Choo" is fun and the ensemble arrangement of three guitars is rather effective. "The More I See You" contains some good swirling guitar soloing.

There's a nice, rather touching (albeit surprising) nod to Jimi Hendrix on "September In The Rain" where the last few bars emulate the ending of Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary." "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" fairly cracks along and is a reminder of just how many memorable and successful songs Warren wrote. He actually composed over eight hundred! The closer is "At Last" which opens with some delicate harmonics and solo guitar. This is a pleasant session of well-loved tunes. It isn't groundbreaking, but then that wasn't the intention, rather to revere the memory of one of the most prodigious contributors to the great American songbook. ~by Roger Farbey

With Jimmy Smith's virtuostic approach as inspiration, Bennett left piano behind in 1956, and toured the East and Midwest with his organ trio from 1957 through 1959. Bennett left America for Paris in 1960. He recorded there, played at the city's Blue Note club with Jimmy Gourley and fellow expatriate Kenny Clarke, who became one of his regulars alongside Rene Thomas. Bennett made only one return visit to America, appearing at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival. He led his own group during the '80s. ~by Ron Wynn

Nashville-based Dara Tucker won plenty of friends on the soul underground with her 2014 album 'The Sun Season' and now her new long player, 'Oklahoma Rain' (Dara's 4th studio album) is set to outperform it, as once again the savvy soul media and the more discerning soul and jazz radio stations get behind Ms Tucker in an attempt to bring her sweet, melodic, heart and soul warming music to the mainstream.

The tune in the vanguard of the attack is the ab fab 'Radio'. This is feel good music of the highest order and reminds you why soul and jazz are your music genres of choice! It's one of those very rare cuts when EVERYTHING - melody, voice, lyric, ambience, production and Factor X – come together beautifully. The nostalgia quotient is high too and that always helps as first generation soul folk enter the autumn of their years!

Nostalgia is the theme to another of the album's big tunes- 'Oklahoma Rain'. With a hint of Nashville, about it, the song investigates the concept that though we would like to, the "golden" past and cherished memories of it can never be re-visited or indeed be re-created and Dara presents her thesis beautifully.

The good news is that 'Radio' and 'Oklahoma Rain' aren't the only standouts – each and every track has something special to offer. Space precludes us highlighting everything but if you enjoy the drama and emotion of Barbra Streisand then take a listen to Dara's 'The Road'. It proves that that diva doesn't have a monopoly on such things. Then there's the quite lovely, 'Heartache'. Complete with a sweet country-flavoured harmonica, it will pull at your emotions. Maybe you like soul balladry? Then try 'I Fall' – a duet with Kevin Whalum. Wonderful!

By highlighting those cuts, though, we're not doing justice to tracks like 'Anytime Your Heart Breaks' and 'Moving On' or 'All I See Is Love' or indeed any that we still haven't mentioned.

2017 is only four months old yet already we've had some great, proper, truly modern/contemporary soul albums... long players that are true to the roots of this wonderful art form yet still discover new ways to present it. I'm thinking of Brian Owens' set. Now we can add to that Dara Tucker's 'Oklahoma Rain'. Highly recommended

Originally released in March 2007, Sex 'n' Jazz, starring Marvin Gaye, Paul Carrack and Erik Truffaz, immediately captured the public's attention and became an overnight success for Dutch groove jazz band Gare du Nord. Tracks like 'Marvin & Miles', 'You're My Medicine' and 'Beautiful Day' would become instant classics and kick started a new jazz pop wave in The Netherlands. The appeal of the album was also recognized by jazz label Blue Note and in 2009 a remixed version of the album hit the shelves. With the key tracks, originally mixed in the chill mode, dramatically remixed in club soul style, the blue label parachuted Sex 'n' Jazz into platinum heaven. This 2017 expanded edition brings together both the Blue Note remix album master and the original vintage album master from early 2007 for the very first time. State of the art remastered, this landmark edition of Sex 'n' Jazz sounds as crispy as ever. This must be the ultimate fan experience to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the trendsetting club soul masterwork and it's prelude.

Bass – Milt Hinton; Clarinet – Buddy DeFranco; Drums – Art Blakey; Piano – Kenny Drew. Recorded July 1953 in New York.

Over the years, Buddy DeFranco's admirers have often wondered why the clarinet's popularity as a jazz instrument declined considerably after World War II and the swing era -- why haven't more improvisers applied Charlie Parker's ideas to the clarinet, and why is the clarinet usually stereotyped as a swing/Dixieland/classic jazz instrument rather than a bebop, post-bop, avant-garde, soul-jazz, or fusion instrument? Perhaps it has something to do with the demands of the clarinet -- it is a tough instrument to master, and it becomes even more demanding when you're dealing with the complexities of bop. But those challenges never stopped DeFranco, who was 30 when he recorded Mr. Clarinet for Verve in 1953. By that time, DeFranco was being hailed as "the Charlie Parker of the Clarinet," and he lives up to that title on this excellent album (which boasts Kenny Drew on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Art Blakey on drums). Throughout Mr. Clarinet, DeFranco makes the clarinet sound perfectly logical as a bop instrument -- which was certainly an innovative thing to do back in the late '40s and early '50s. Whether he is playing original material or standards (including "But Not for Me" and "It Could Happen to You"), DeFranco refuses to let the clarinet's evolution end with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Sidney Bechet, and Barney Bigard; he has no problem making the clarinet sound relevant to the bebop scene of 1953. (It should be noted that Shaw was also exploring bop on the clarinet in the early '50s, but regrettably, he decided to retire from music in 1955.) Most of the bop-oriented recordings that DeFranco provided in the '50s are well worth owning; Mr. Clarinet (which Verve reissued on CD in 2002) is no exception. ~Alex Henderson

Pianist Keith Ingham pays tribute to the legendary songwriter Hoagy Carmichael on this well-conceived project. Ingham is heard in three separate settings. Eight songs have him doubling on harpsichord in a sextet reminiscent of Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, with Scott Robinson on clarinet and bass clarinet and trumpeter Randy Reinhart. "Hong Kong Blues" features Ingham in a conventional piano/bass/drums trio, while the remaining ten songs are mostly joyous romps in a trio with clarinetist Bobby Gordon and drummer Arnie Kinsella. The 19 songs are mostly all pretty familiar, but these renditions give them fresh life while re-creating their original joy. Ingham was one of the top swing pianists of the 1990s, and A Star Dust Melody is one of his many excellent recordings. Recommended. ~Scott Yanow

The Sandpipers - The Wonder Of You

For the Sandpipers' fourth long-player, vocalists James Brady, Michael Piano, Richard Shoff, and the uncredited Pamela Ramcier continue their interpretation of popular tunes from a multitude of genres. There are discernible differences however. For instance, there are no Beatles cover tunes, fewer multilingual remakes, and likewise the distinction between the type of arrangements has decreased significantly. That isn't to suggest that enthusiasts of the Sandpipers' earlier sides won't enjoy this collection, but there aren't as many hidden gems. The Norman Gimbel/Baden Powell samba "Let Go" gets things underway with the same scintillating rhythm of Rosemary Clooney and Astrud Gilberto's better-known renditions. A highlight follows with another Gimbel collaboration as he teams with cinematic composer Lalo Schifrin. The pair's laid-back "That Night" was used as the haunting theme song for director Mark Rydell's 1967 adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's The Fox. The Sandpipers' vocals weave hypnotically through the languid, bittersweet melody. By contrast and to lesser effect is "Windmills of Your Mind" -- from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) -- as the midtempo overhaul diminishes the sinister nature of Dusty Springfield's Top 40 version. The heavy-handed orchestration is incongruously matched with the combo's lightweight voices on the title track "The Wonder of You." That problem certainly didn't hamper Ray Peterson's 1959 or Elvis Presley's 1970 readings however. More successful is the light and catchy "Pink Flamingo" as well as the return to the Sandpipers' former glories on the bilingual "Yellow Days" and "Lo Mucho Que Ye Quiero (The More I Love You)." In 2006, Collectors' Choice Music paired Misty Roses with the follow-up The Wonder of You (1968) on a two-fer CD -- making each available for the first time in the digital domain. ~Lindsay Planer

Acoustic Bass – Red Mitchell; Drums – Pétur Östlund; Euphonium – Rich Matteson; Piano – Stefan Karlsson. Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, 1985

It’s almost as hard to comprehend that this buoyant album was recorded almost 15 years ago as it is to accept the fact that neither Rich Matteson (“the world’s greatest Jazz euphonium player”) nor Red Mitchell (“one of the world’s two greatest bassists to share that surname”) is no longer with us. Ironically, the session’s scurrying, bluesy title tune, “Life’s a Take,” was dedicated to Fred Crane, a longtime friend and colleague who passed away shortly before Rich and Red entered a studio in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1985 to record it. Crane, who Matteson describes in the liner notes as a superlative pianist and composer, left almost no recorded documentation of his artistry. Matteson, an outstanding player in his own right, was also sadly underrecorded, but thanks to Four Leaf Clover we have at least two albums on which his remarkable talents are prominently displayed. Mitchell, on the other hand, recorded often under his own name and as a sideman, but his indomitable presence here is no less welcome because of it. For the uninitiated, Matteson’s ax, the euphonium, is the tenor component of the tuba family, pitched in B–flat, and in terms of sound comes closest to a valve trombone. Matteson’s description of himself as the “world’s greatest” Jazz euphonium player was of course a running gag, as he was for years its only champion — but had there been others he might have earned the prize anyway, playing as he always did with such conspicuous awareness and enthusiasm. Mitchell, the brother of another world–class bassist, Whitey, made no such claim, but those who heard his resonant and metronomic shadings soon became his partisans and admirers. While Matteson and Mitchell are the drawing cards, the disarming program of standards (except for “Life’s a Take”) is considerably enhanced by the presence of Karlsson, a strikingly young (at the time) but extremely capable pianist, and Östlund, an even–tempered but resolute drummer from Iceland. With the ranks of such trail–blazing giants as Matteson and Mitchell becoming inescapably smaller as the years go by, we are assuredly blessed to have recorded evidence of their uncommon virtuosity. ~Jack Bowers

Joined by a particularly strong rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Art Blakey), Shorter sounds quite distinctive on the advanced hard bop material. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/second-genesis-mw0000188767

Lambert, Hendricks and Ross made their debut on Columbia in 1959, and this CD contains not only all of the music from their first CBS album, but five titles from two later records. This set has many memorable classics from the great singers Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks (the top vocalese lyricist) and Annie Ross. Highlights include the upbeat "Charleston Alley," a remake of Ross' "Twisted," the heated "Cloudburst," Hendricks' humorous "Gimme That Wine," "Summertime" (a recreation of Miles Davis' version with Gil Evans), and "Come on Home." Although Lambert, Hendricks and Ross only lasted a few years, their influence on other vocal groups was enormous. This set is a perfect place for collectors to begin to explore their vocal magic. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/everybodys-boppin-mw0000653429

Little Peggy March (born Margaret Annemarie Battavio, March 8, 1948, Lansdale, Pennsylvania) is an American and German pop singer. She is primarily known for her 1963 million-selling song “I Will Follow Him”.

She was discovered at age thirteen singing at her cousin’s wedding and was introduced to the record producer partnership Hugo & Luigi. They gave her the nickname Little Peggy March because she was only 4 ft 9 in (1.45 m) tall, she was only 13, the record she did with them was “Little Me,” and her birthday was in March.

On April 24, 1963, her single “I Will Follow Him” soared to number one on the U.S. charts. Recorded in early January 1963 and released January 22, Little Peggy March was only 14 at the time. March became the youngest female artist with a number one hit, at 15, in late April 1963, a record that still stands for the Billboard Hot 100. The recording also took the number one spot in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, and Scandinavia. It was a translation of the French song “Chariot” recorded a year earlier by Petula Clark.

March’s success also came with financial trouble. She was a minor and the Coogan Law prevented her parents from managing her money. The responsibility was placed on her manager, Russell Smith. It was discovered in 1966 that he had squandered the fortune away, leaving her with $500. Little Peggy March graduated from Lansdale Catholic High School in 1966. She soon had a new manager, Arnie Harris, who later became her husband. They had one daughter, Sande, born in 1974.

Although she is remembered by some as a one-hit wonder, her singles “I Wish I Were a Princess” and “Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love” made the Top 30 in the United States, with the latter also reaching #29 on the UK Singles Chart.

She recorded 18 singles for RCA Victor between 1964 and 1971 and several albums as well, none of which charted well in the United States. She began making a strong presence in the European and Asian music markets and moved to Germany in 1969.

Her commercial success in Germany continued through much of the 1970s; she tried her luck in representing Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969, only to be placed second in the national final with the song “Hey! Das ist Musik für mich”. March made another Eurovision attempt in 1975, when she performed the Ralph Siegel composition “Alles geht vorüber” in the German national contest. Again she was placed second.

In 1979, she experimented with disco on the album Electrifying, but it failed to achieve commercial success. By 1981 record companies did not renew her contracts, and she moved back to the United States. In 1984, however, Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora achieved a major European hit single with the track “When the Rain Begins to Fall”, co-written by March. Although not a hit in the UK or in the US, it went to #1 in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In 1998, the song entered the German Top 10 again when covered by rapper Pappa Bear.

The cult film Hairspray featured “I Wish I Were a Princess” in 1988, and a retro fad in Germany brought her some continuing success starting in the mid-1990s with the album Die Freiheit Frau zu sein (1995). Her song “I Will Follow Him” was featured in the 1992 movie Sister Act. Currently she works largely in the Las Vegas music scene and has also performed at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater in Branson, Missouri. In 2004 she was the headliner in Riff Markowitz’s Fabulous Palm Springs Follies at the Plaza Theater in Palm Springs, California. In 2005, she released an album of standards, Get Happy, followed by the album Meine Liebe ist stark genug (2008).

In March 2010, Little Peggy March went into the recording studio to record her first album of new, original material in English in over 30 years. A collaboration with Scandinavian songwriter and producer Soren Jensen, the album Always and Forever was released on October 13, 2010.

It was followed by a special edition for the German-speaking countries in April 2012, including two duets with the Dutch singer José Hoebee, one of them being a cover version of “I Will Follow Him”; which had also been a #1 single in the Netherlands and Belgium for Hoebee in 1982. March also recorded another version of “When The Rain Begins To Fall”, as a duet with the German singer Andreas Zaron.

The three passionate musicians came closer to him in the band He & We and soon a friendship arose. Embossed by radio / jazz blues and latin, the three quickly recognized that they were speaking the same musical language. The joy, the fun and the love of the music brought the trio to the founding of the organ. The Hammond organ is the trademark of the band. With organ, guitar and drums, they present jazzy jazzy blues and groovy old-school funk. If the occasion demands it, Orgzeptor will also play with vocals or other guest musicians. The three blossoms on stage.

Randy Lyght is a jazz and pop singer/songwriter and has been involved in the Canadian music and entertainment industry for decades.

For the last five years Randy has successfully performed and recorded three albums (Just In Time, A Return To Romance and Happy Holidays) that were all produced by the award-winning producer Rick Hutt at Cedartree Recording Studio. Two of these albums cover songs from the American Songbook. With Randy’s creation of his original songs, he has focused on breathing new life into the same genre of music.

Growing up in a household that appreciated all flavours of music, Randy was introduced to country as well as big band music. At the young age of 15, Randy started in his hometown of Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario, singing the cover songs of the popular rock bands of the time because that was the accepted music. Soon, Randy started to admire the works of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and others even if it wasn’t the cool music to listen to at the time.

In the mid-70’s Randy was asked to join a world tour for 18 months with The World Renowned Platters. His talent and innate musicality was enriched, singing under the direction of very talented performers.

Returning home, Randy moved to Vancouver BC and continued to sing at countless live engagements and recorded commissioned songs and radio jingles until the mid 80’s.

After meeting his soul mate and having children, Randy chose to put his dream on hold and provide a stable lifestyle for his family. A part of his heart though was always with his music.

Now after returning to pursue his passion of music in 2011, Randy has been entertaining audiences with his now mature and textured vocals. When he performs he exudes a kind of showmanship, class and charisma from years gone by.

Randy is well known for his engaging shows of personality on stage, which applauds audiences every time. Randy makes every show count and be memorable.

11. Western (4:14)

On the exquisite Walk Against Wind bassist Linda May Han Oh showcases her unique compositional style that rivals, artistically, her mastery over her instrument and her improvisational prowess. These 11 originals express various motifs reflecting Oh's diverse influences yet a delightfully dark poetry imbues all of them, giving the album its thematic unity.

The intensely cinematic "Speech Impediment," for instance, has a languid melody and shimmering refrains. Oh's Lilting, wordless vocals echo saxophonist Ben Wendel wistful lines. As the tempo picks up the tune becomes crisper and more hypnotic. Wendel and guitarist Matthew Stevens exchange thrillingly dissonant lines over drummer Justin Brown's thunderous beats and Oh's thumping bass. Brown's dynamic solo ushers in the concluding head.

Brown opens the atmospheric "Ikan Bilis" with his haunting drumming that endows the music with a primal spirituality. Pianist Fabian Almazan makes a guest appearance as he and the other band members contribute their respective introspective musings. The individual instrumental voices coalesce into a mystical and memorable ensemble performance that has an undercurrent of subtle funky rhythms. Almazan's chiming keys and Stevens' resonant notes mix in with Oh and Brown's percolating cadence to buoy Wendel's warmly wailing tenor.

Another guest, Korean traditional percussionist Minji Park, adds an Eastern touch to the expectant "Mantis" with her exotic janggu & kkwaenggwari. Oh takes center stage with complex and lyrical extemporization that is intriguingly crepuscular. Wendel's yearning, fiery phrases thrillingly contrast with the contemplative serenity of the rest of the track.

The pensive and dramatic "Deepsea Dancers" demonstrates Western Classical hints especially in the melodic fragments that are its building blocks. Stevens and Wendel alternate eloquent spontaneous monologues that are sometimes stimulatingly angular and at others elegantly fluid. Oh's muscular reverberations and Brown's soft thuds and brushing add an element of tension to the overall mood.

Walking Against Wind is a mature work that perfectly balances different musical elements. The prewritten and the spontaneously created seamlessly meld and miscellaneous inspirations fuse into a singular and sublime whole. It is Oh's best release to date and, hopefully, a sign of what is to come next.

Personnel: Linda May Han Oh: bass, voice; Ben Wendel: saxophone; Matthew Stevens: guitar; Justin Brown:drums; Fabian Almazan: piano (2, 6, 10); Minji Park: janggu & kkwaenggwari (8).

Blues and Other Love Songs was originally released on Muse records and is available as a budget title from the excellent reissue label 32 Jazz. Brown is in a typically soulful mood, crooning like a gritty modern day Nat "King" Cole. Backing up the piano and vocals of Brown are soul-groove saxophonist Houston Person, whose smokey tenor chops were an excellent match for Brown's blues. Danny Caron on guitar, Ruth Davies on bass, and Gaylord Birch round out the rhythm section. These ten tracks consist of five originals and five covers featuring a brief version of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight," showing off Brown's ability to play straight jazz. Person is also heard with Brown on the 32 jazz reissue Lost and Found, which combines the albums Sweet Slumber and Wildflower on one disc. ~Al Campbell

Nancy Wilson was one of the biggest stars of the 1960s; until the Beatles came along, she was the biggest-selling artist on the Capitol Records roster. The title track of the singles collection How Glad I Am was Wilson's biggest hit of the era and won a Grammy in 1964. While "How Glad I Am" is a tart, country-flavored soul number, the album also features Wilson doing vocal pop, jazz-blues (the juicy, Hammond B-3-filled "West Coast Blues" is the set's best number), R&B, and bossa nova. The title tune remains a favorite of the British Northern soul scene but most of these numbers haven't endured the way that Wilson's album cuts from the same period have. Though this album is long out of print, almost all of the songs on it can be found on various Nancy Wilson CD collections. [In 2009 the DRG label reissued 1964's How Glad I Am combined with the following year's Gentle Is My Love on a single CD.] ~Nick Dedina

Joe Pass achieved extraordinary balance in his career. Because he remained grounded in bop and swing, his guitar work was more conservative than many fusion and post-bop players, but his solo guitar work also ventured into unexplored territory, combining the single-note dexterity of Charlie Christian with the block chords of Carl Kress. Meditation: Solo Guitar offers a fresh release from Pass, recorded live at Yoshi's in 1992, two years before his death. As Ken Dryden points out in the liner notes, the release isn't just "a case of posthumously cleaning out the vaults." Like the critically acclaimed Virtuoso series, Meditation exhibits a number of intricate interpretations of classic pieces by one man and his guitar. The title also captures the intimacy of Pass' work on "Everything Happens to Me" and "Mood Indigo." He seems so absorbed in his work, so alone, that it comes as a shock when the audience applauds at the end of each piece. Pass also covers Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me," Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean?," and the Gershwin brothers' "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Pass' technique manages to follow his own muse, changing tempos at will without ever losing the rhythm of the tune. Meditation is a fine album and a superior addition to the guitarist's catalog. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr

"26-year old British vocalist in her U.S. recording debut - Susannah passed the "old standard" test with flying colors, she also revealed that she is one new artist who brings a certain excitement to each song she delivers. The "standards" virtually become "new" songs in her deft interpretations. On this LP, Susannah works well with the arrangements of Peter Knight and his orchestra. But, ultimately, it is her vocal style that is arresting to any listener. Hers is a warm yet pleasantly wistful voice, the kind of voice that goes well late at night when you're with someone or all alone. She is, quite simply, a fine talent....bright, new, and incomparably young! Jere Real, 1966"

The second album from the Kevin Hays New Day Trio does and doesn't follow in its predecessor's footsteps. On one hand you can argue that it's completely different, as Hays doesn't sing on this one and there are no guests to speak of here; on the other, you can certainly opine that the overt lyricism in this music, forged through Hays' fingers and enhanced by the extremely interactive and empathetic team of bassist Rob Jost and drummer Greg Joseph, is a clear link to New Day (Sunnyside, 2015). In truth, both thought camps are probably right. Hays has managed to tinker with the fine balance of musical distinctiveness and directional mutability in his work for more than two decades, so why should things be any different with this group? Better to simply enjoy this to-die-for music than split hairs over album-to-album connectivity.  North's name was born through historical and personal ties for Hays, referencing everything from Harlem's musical riches to the pianist's former upstate New York home/sanctuary to a metaphorical ideal. It's an album built on a specific platform of thought, but it's not a work that fixes the compass on a single point. In fact, the variety is quite staggering when you start to think about it: A twisted and spiked take on Charlie Parker's "Scrapple From The Apple" sits beside a sorrowful-turned-scintillating "Elegia"; a Chilean folk pastoral, painted freely by Hays' piano and Jost's ukulele, serves as a prelude to an excitable 5/4 romp on "Violetta"; staid socializing leads toward waltzing wonders through classical borrowings on "Schumann's Chamisso"; and funky feelings rule the day on "Sweet Caroline" a Hays original, not the Neil Diamond party warhorse. All of that sits within the incredibly gratifying first half of the album.  The five tracks that follow continue to speak to Hays' creativity, both as a composer, interpreter, and conceptualist. Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep" points both to its deep folk-blues spirit and sunnier aspirations, the swinging "All Things Are" emerges from the roots of the eternal "All The Things You Are" and grows in different directions, the title track is both a reflection and a respite, and "I'll Remember April" bounces along on a 6/8 carriage and gets a slightly darker and more intriguing coat of harmonic paint than what's customarily used. Then album's end cites day's beginning on the ever-evolving yet melodically moored "Morning." It's certainly a clear sendoff, but it also brings you back, inviting another listen each and every time. ~ Dan Bilawsky https://www.allaboutjazz.com/north-kevin-hays-new-day-trio-sunnyside-records-review-by-dan-bilawsky.php

Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has always captured the essence of straight-ahead jazz at its best. He provides a groove over which his bands improvise in the classic tradition. Echoes of Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson abound. From this modern jazz historical foundation, however, he's always felt free to explore. With his latest release, Lupri retains the traditional bebop spirit that has given us immeasurable pleasure for more than half a century, but brings it all to us from the perspective of original compositions. From eerie and dramatic romps to free and playful cavorts in the park, his suite-like images allow the music to grow. The mainstream has indeed become modern, as the vibraphonist and his stellar ensemble find new ways to express their ideas. Electronic trumpet echoes and wide guitar reverberations fit in nicely between pages and pages of familiar-sounding soundscapes. The added features are used sparingly, and serve to punctuate the ensemble's original thematic material.  The vibraphone's timbre blends well with just about any instrumental combination. Here, Mark Turner, Nate Radley and Cuong Vu ensure that Lupri's instrumental voice fits the ensemble sound like a hand in a glove. Their subdued tones all blend together as one emotional vote for quality in the sounds that we experience every day. Vu's mellow trumpet, Turner's robust saxophone, and Radley's fluid guitar fit well with Lupri's rain shower of tonal colorations. Together they've created a superb sound and a highly recommended album. ~ Jim Santella https://www.allaboutjazz.com/transition-sonic-matthias-lupri-summit-records-review-by-jim-santella.php

Bob Mover's first session as a leader matches his alto and soprano with trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Mike Nock, guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist George Mraz, drummer Jeff Pappez and singer Jay Clayton on four lengthy performances: three Mover originals and "Darn That Dream." The use of Clayton's voice as a part of the ensembles gives the band an unusual sound. Mover sounded pretty strong, if a bit derivative at this point (he was 24), but Harrell generally takes solo honors. This session has not yet been reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/on-the-move-mw0000545526

Some jazz purists would say that Wayne Shorter went downhill in the 1970s, when he passionately embraced electric jazz-fusion and co-led the innovative Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. But remember: Those are the same people who also claim that Miles Davis' stunning Bitches Brew has no value, and that Chick Corea's visionary Return to Forever was a complete waste -- so it's hard to take their opinions seriously. The fact is that the '70s were a highly productive time for Shorter, and it wasn't until the '80s that the tenor and soprano saxophonist really declined creatively. One of Shorter's best-selling albums from the '70s was Native Dancer, a Brazilian-oriented jazz-fusion masterpiece that boasts Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, and employs such Brazilian talent as singer Milton Nascimento (a superstar in Brazil) and percussionist Airto Moreira. Everything on this melodic, consistently lyrical effort is a jewel, and that includes Hancock's "Joanna's Theme," as well as pieces by Nascimento ("From the Lonely Afternoons" and "Ponta de Areia") and by Shorter himself ("Ana Maria," "Beauty and the Beast" ). Native Dancer is clearly among Shorter's most essential albums. ~Alex Henderson

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell was a virtual unknown when he recorded this Riverside album, his first as a leader. Mitchell is heard in excellent form in an all-star sextet with trombonist Curtis Fuller, tenor great Johnny Griffin, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. In addition to some group originals, obscurities, and the standard "There Will Never Be Another You," the group also plays the earliest recorded version of Benny Golson's "Blues March," pre-dating Art Blakey's famous recording. ~Scott Yanow

As it is with most nostalgia, each bygone era has its own allure. With the songs on VELVET MARTINI, the era evoked is one where men wore suits and ties, women wore dresses or gowns, and everyone tired to exude a modicum of dignified style and class. With Jeff Steinberg’s artful, affectionate arrangements of classic songs from the days of the big bands to the early 1960s, the ideal of such a shaken-not-stirred time period is just a bit closer to real. ~Mark Keresman

Pamela Rose has returned to her blues/R&B side for her third release with a program of red beans and rice, chitlins', and greens -- tunes all of which Rose wrote in collaboration with someone else, mostly Jeff Ervin. The R&B, bluesy surrounding is given credibility by the instrument that is the bulwark of that genre, the Hammond B3 organ, played by Tony Stead. But there's plenty of help from the dripping guitars of Carl Lockett and Danny Caron and the honking tenor and baritone saxophones of Ervin and Johnny Bamont, recalling the likes of Heywood Henry, Leslie Johnakins, and Buddy Lucas, who regularly accompanied the best of the singers of this type of music. Rose has that pleading, catch-in-the-voice style that makes R&B funk work to its best advantage. She uses these devices to advantage on her uncomplicated, earthy tales of romance, unrequited love, and other day-to-day situations which R&B describes best. There is no doubt of the high level of Rose's performance and the way she has taken to the blue-tinged material. She is wise enough to offer a break or two from the doleful material. In fact, one of the best tracks on the CD is a swinging "Wake Up," where she demands that people get off the couch, away from the TV screen, and "Drop the mouse/Leave the house/Come on, get out and make a scene." This track is also noted for some exiting but loose ensemble playing. You Could Have It All offers just the right blend of the melancholy side of the blues with the more upbeat side of that genre performed by outstanding musicians. This is an album you'll want for both the vocalizing and the instrumentalists. ~by Dave Nathan
