This CD has highlights from Slim Gaillard's 1946-1947 and 1951-1954 recordings for the Verve label. A fine Charlie Christian-inspired guitarist, an adequate pianist, and a unique jive singer, Gaillard was always in his own category. Some of the selections on this CD are hilarious, and highlights include the four-part "Opera in Vout," "Serenade to a Poodle" (which of course has plenty of barking), "Laughing in Rhythm," "Chicken Rhythm," "Potato Chips," and the previously unreleased (and modestly titled) "Genius," which features Gaillard overdubbing himself on trumpet, trombone, tenor, vibes, piano, organ, bass, drums, and tap dancing. Allan Vache, best known for his longtime association with Jim Cullum, is a fiery, chance-taking clarinetist whose main influence is Benny Goodman. The BG connection is felt even stronger than usual on this CD due to the instrumentation (the same as the first Benny Goodman Sextet), the 1940s-era standards, and the playing of the sidemen. Pianist Johnny Varro has long kept Teddy Wilson's sound alive, vibraphonist John Cocuzzi recalls both Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo, and brother/cornetist Warren Vache makes a welcome guest appearance on "Cheek to Cheek"; it is a pity that he is not on more selections. Although a touch derivative, Allan Vache is heard in top form throughout the enjoyable set, and such rarely performed numbers as "June Night," "Rachel's Dream" and Mel Powell's "Hi Ya, Sophia" are among the highlights. ~ Scott Yanow

Born in Washington D.C in 1963, she was virtually unknown outside of her home town. She officially released only two albums during her life, one of which was the popular "Live at Blues Alley" released in 1996 the same year as her untimely death. It wasn't until the year 2000, that Eva Cassidy was bought to some world-wide attention when her version of "Over The Rainbow" was played by Terry Wogan on BBC radio 2. With such an overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of the same song was featured in Top Of The Pops 2 on BBC 2 to even greater acclaim. Shortly after this, the compilation album "Songbird" climbed to the top of the UK Album Charts, almost 3 years after its initial release! This chart success in the UK and Ireland lead to increased recognition of Eva Cassidy's work WORLDWIDE and what followed were a series of recordings released after her death. Three of these albums became no.1 records in the UK and have sold more than 10 million copies! As an artist who has now charted top 10 positions in Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway & Switzerland, Eva Cassidy is now proving to have a significant influence on vocalists and musicians worldwide.

Recorded at a live outdoor concert, this date features pianist Nat Pierce leading a quintet that includes drummer Frank Capp (his co-leader with the Juggernaut big band), tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, the talented but rarely heard trumpeter Dick Collins and bassist Bob Saravia. Mary Ann McCall, a veteran of the Woody Herman Orchestra, made very few recordings this late in her career, so it is a pleasure to hear the singer interpreting a few numbers (most notably "If I Had You" and "Detour Ahead"). Perk, Collins and Pierce are in fine form throughout the date, which includes three additional selections unearthed for the 1996 CD reissue. On this set, Judy Barnett, a talented, always-swinging jazz singer, is backed by different instrumentation on most of the selections, including such guests as guitarist John Pizzarelli, Ken Peplowski on tenor and clarinet, trumpeter Bud Burridge, trombonist Mike Christianson, and a string quartet. Pianist Ted Kooshian provided the diverse arrangements. Barnett really digs into the lyrics of the songs, treating some as serious (and usually including the verses) and others as more lightweight, but still with charm. Among the songs she uplifts are "Just One of Those Things," "Begin the Beguine," Duke Ellington's "Azalea," "The Way You Look Tonight," an excellent version of "Willow Weep for Me," and "Where or When." She also does a close impression of Ella Fitzgerald on "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)." Well worth checking out, Judy Barnett deserves to be better-known. ~ Scott Yanow

Of all the adjectives that might be applied to Alfred Ferdinando Viola (1919- 2007), perhaps the most all-embracingly apt would be resourceful. A Brooklyn native who developed most of his career as a guitarist in Hollywood, he became known in the mid 40s as an integral part of the popular Page Cavanaugh Trio. Later, in the Fifties, when he joined Bobby Troup s trio, he worked and recorded with Julie London, Jimmy Witherspoon, June Christy and many other great singers most memorably Frank Sinatra in addition to holding the guitar chair with the diverse big bands and styles of Harry James, Nelson Riddle, Ray Anthony and Buddy Collette s modern jazz quintet. That hard-earned versatility is reflected in these late-50s recordings, in which he is a one-man guitar orchestra, performing and arranging all the parts himself. He recorded the rhythm and bass guitars separately on one tape for the basic rhythmic pattern. On another, the amplified or gut-stringed guitars were used for fills (in which the guitars were the equivalent of a brass, string or reed section). The first two tapes were then combined and the single-fingered solos were added on a third tape. Viola put them all together with judicious balancing, and gave each of the twelve standards its own individual treatment, with varied instruments used to provide the special effects. The fruit of his hard work and unquestioned ability is stunningly revealed in "The Guitars."

Several years have passed since last I heard Hinda Hoffman, and I’d almost forgotten what an absolutely marvelous singer she is. It’s good to be reminded of that, even though Hinda did have to produce this second album herself, as she did her first one. So why can’t someone with such conspicuous talent get a break? Why does she have to scratch out a living in Chicago, singing wherever and whenever she can find an open mic, while the Diana Kralls, Cassandra Wilsons and Nnenna Freelons of the world none of whom, in our opinion, can hold a candle to Hinda command generous recording contracts, light up festival marquees and earn mega–buck guarantees? I have a theory, and it is this: even though Hinda has a wonderful contralto voice, near perfect diction, enormous respect for a lyric, a keen sense of rhythm enhanced by an incisive feeling for Jazz inflection, and brace yourselves actually sings on key, she lacks the one ingredient that our image conscious society prizes more highly than talent, and that is glamor. 

Dress Hinda Hoffman in the finest furs and jewelry and she’d still be Hinda Hoffman, only dressier. Don't get me wrong; Hinda's not unattractive or anywhere near that, but she is, to put it as discreetly as possible, an average-looking brunette who happens to own an amazingly above-average singing voice. If  and we can’t be certain that’s the case  if Hinda’s less than provocative appearance counts as one strike against her, her determination to be a Jazz singer is no doubt another, and the third could well be the fact that she chooses to live in Chicago, not New York or L.A. Add ’em up and the result is that many people won’t hear her impressive renditions of “I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good),” “Deep Purple,” “Comes Love” and so many other memorable songs, and that is their loss, as Hinda pours her heart and soul into every number on this exemplary CD. As the late Steve Allen, a superb connoisseur of talent, observes in the album’s brief liner note, Hoffman is “one of the best singers in the business. She’s the real thing, a singer with not only a fine voice, but an authentic feeling for Jazz. You can understand her every word, and her simple sound is just lovely. 

For you ‘excellent freaks’ out there, [this album] is a treat.” We should add that she’s also an astute appraiser of songs, carefully reinvigorating Alec Wilder’s “Moon and Sand” and such other sleeping princes as “Day by Day,” “Wonder Why,” “Our Day Will Come” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Dreamer” (lyrics by Gene Lees). To her credit, she sings Dave Frishberg’s seductive “Peel Me a Grape” her way, with any allusions to Blossom Dearie no more than coincidental. On that number, as on every other, Hoffman receives unflagging support from pianist Dennis Luxion (who divides time with Ron Perrillo), bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer George Fludas. Adam Schroeder makes his debut as a leader with A Handful of Stars. Following a number of giants who have played the baritone sax, Schroeder's approach is closest to that of Gerry Mulligan, due to his emphasis on the big reed as a melodic instrument, plus his preference for a pianoless quartet. Schroeder, who has recorded with Clark Terry, Bennie Wallace, Taylor Eigsti, Anthony Wilson, and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, recruited the co-leaders from the latter band, bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, plus guitarist Graham Dechter (also a Clayton-Hamilton sideman). "I Don't Wanna Be Kissed" is a perfect example of a great song that has been overlooked by jazz musicians; Schroeder's robust baritone sizzles in Josh Nelson's lightly swinging arrangement. Cole Porter's "I Happen to Be in Love" is another forgotten gem worthy of attention; Gerald Clayton's scoring of it reveals its potential, accented by the tasty solos of Schroeder, Dechter, and John Clayton. 

The baritone saxophonist is also up to the challenge of familiar works. His novel duo setting of Duke Ellington's "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'" opens with his reed accompanied by Clayton's whimsical arco bass, though Clayton does alternate playing pizzicato as well. The leader's cooking setting of the standard "Just in Time" pulses with energy, with Dechter's solo showing shades of the great Bucky Pizzarelli. Schroeder's compositions are also potent. The breezy funk vehicle "Midwest Mash" recalls the groove sound popularized in the late '60s and early '70s, showcasing Dechter's bluesy solo. Schroeder's lush ballad "Hidden Within" was jointly arranged by the saxophonist and guitarist, where his horn almost seems to whisper. A good swing trombonist, Rex Allen heads an octet for this live session for the German Nagel-Hayer label. Trombonist Dan Barrett sticks exclusively to trumpet and plays quite effectively; tenorman Harry Allen is a strong asset; Jim Rothermel switches between clarinet, alto and soprano; the rhythm section is comprised of guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, pianist Mark Shane, bassist Frank Tate and drummer Gregor Beck; and Terrie Richards contributes a few worthy vocals. Unlike most of the other releases from this label, many of the ensembles are arranged, but the music overall swings. Carrie Landsgaard, hailing from the Southland, has been performing with premiere Jazz Players in the Southern Californian area for ten years in top venues such as Disneyland's exclusive Club 33 (for the millennium celebration), Ritz Carlton - Palm Springs, The Wyndham Emerald Plaza Int'l Hotel - San Diego, the Four Season's Aviara - San Diego, Alhambra Summer Music Festival, City of Lakewood - Summer Series in the Park, Pacific Beach Festival and more.
Recently, she traveled to Hong Kong to perform at the "Oasis of Jazz" event, for Rolls Royce's 100th Anniversary Celebration, and at The Foreign Correspondent's Club private venue.
Carrie also has some independent film to her credit, as well as a leading role (the one with the gun ) for Unsolved Mysteries in "The Thelma and Louise bandits" segment, and more recently on "America's Most Wanted".

While "Is This Desire?" is a jazz and swing album, paying tribute to the Jazz Standards, she also penned the title track, and "Bad Dream Baby" with tenorman Mikole Kaar.

The trio began operating in early 2000 and so far has recorded 5 albums, "Conclusiones" (2002), "Equilibrio" (2005), "Nada mas que decir" (2008), "Lost In Time" (2010). "No moon, no sun, no age" (2012)
From his early training with Pablo Vernieri and Marcelo Von Schultz, different musicians have joined at each stage; Pablo Fiorentini, James Suggs, Santiago Castelani, Miguel Tallarita, Ezequiel Piazza, Luis De la Torre and David Cantoni, among others.
By late 2008, the group consolidated with the addition of Ryan Anderson on guitar and Timoty Cid on drums, giving a dramatic change and affirming their musical direction which developed from his second album "Equilibrio" to a side with more funk and power, with many echoes of the 60s and 70s without losing the essence of jazz, with a sound more raw, rough, almost rock, stripped of everything digital and focused in its entirety to an aesthetic marked by good vintage and similar instruments.

He has made presentations across the country and abroad, such as the Jazz Festival of Buenos Aires, Cycle Jazzología in the San Martín Theatre, Hall A, B and Muiño of the San Martín Theatre, Jazz Festival of Moron, Hall Leopoldo Marechall of the Victoria Auditorium of San Juan, ND Ateneo, Niceto, Thelonius Club, Notorious, Jamsessions (Program channel 7), the blades of Villa Gessell, Auditorium Theatre in Mar del Plata, Neuquen, Uruguay, Corrientes, Comodoro Rivadavia, Chaco, Catamarca, Bariloche, Córdoba, Río Cuarto, Rafaela, Sunchales, Rosario, San Rafael, San Juan, Mendoza, Atlantic Coast, Chascomús, Zárate, Campana, Jazz Festival of La Plata, sample music from La Plata, among others.

In 2010, as part of the presentation of his new album "Lost In Time", the group made a tour through Argentina and Uruguay with Medeski, Martin and Wood, a renowned American trio, who in the 90's revolutionized jazz with an exquisite fusion of funk, soul, rock and groove. The group also performed at The Coliseum Bs.As, Libertador Theatre of Cordoba, La Trastienda in Montevideo Uruguay, and the Theatre Español in Neuquen.

This disc is 250,000 pounds-per-square-inch cabaret music rendered with a loving and exacting hand by a coy master. Singer Jim Caruso does not take himself seriously while doing exactly that, and it is this quality that makes The Swing Set so much entertaining fun. Caruso's repertoire is not dusty standards, sanded to nothingness; instead, he chooses less-heard gems performed in the style of the '20s and '30s. Add to this perfect engineering and a crackerjack band, and Caruso delivers a completely entertaining experience.

Caruso opens his recital with a bright and smiling take on the 1935 Ted Koehler/Jimmy McHugh Alice Faye vehicle, "I've Got My Fingers Crossed." He shares this glee with Michael Feinstein on the mid-'40s June Barton hit "It's Got To Be This or That," propelled by the full the strength of Caruso's little big band. Harry Allen proves why he is the Frank Sinatra of the tenor saxophone in his solo—Caruso may be his perfect musical foil.

Perhaps the most "standard" of Caruso's selection is the Arlen/Yarberg classic, "If I Only Had a Brain," which Caruso slays with guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and cornetist Warren Vache. This is, perhaps, the finest performance of this true American chestnut. Caruso sings this ballad with such sweetness and grace that it would be hard to imagine him bettering himself, but he does on "Pick Yourself Up," which he sings full of sunshine and glee. In lesser hands, the music on The Swing Set would be pure camp. Caruso saves the recital from this with a fun, confident sense of humor and certain knowledge of his material.

Before Milt Jackson, there were only two major vibraphonists: Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo. Jackson soon surpassed both of them in significance and, despite the rise of other players (including Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton), still won the popularity polls throughout the decades. Jackson (or "Bags" as he was long called) was at the top of his field for 50 years, playing bop, blues, and ballads with equal skill and sensitivity.

Milt Jackson started on guitar when he was seven, and piano at 11; a few years later, he switched to vibes. He actually made his professional debut singing in a touring gospel quartet. After Dizzy Gillespie discovered him playing in Detroit, he offered him a job with his sextet and (shortly after) his innovative big band (1946). Jackson recorded with Gillespie, and was soon in great demand. During 1948-1949, he worked with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Howard McGhee, and the Woody Herman Orchestra. After playing with Gillespie's sextet (1950-1952), which at one point included John Coltrane, Jackson recorded with a quartet comprised of John Lewis, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke (1952), which soon became a regular group called the Modern Jazz Quartet. Although he recorded regularly as a leader (including dates in the 1950s with Miles Davis and/or Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, and Ray Charles), Milt Jackson stayed with the MJQ through 1974, becoming an indispensable part of their sound. By the mid-'50s, Lewis became the musical director and some felt that Bags was restricted by the format, but it actually served him well, giving him some challenging settings. And he always had an opportunity to jam on some blues numbers, including his "Bags' Groove." However, in 1974, Jackson felt frustrated by the MJQ (particularly financially) and broke up the group. He recorded frequently for Pablo in many all-star settings in the 1970s, and after a seven-year vacation, the MJQ came back in 1981. In addition to the MJQ recordings, Milt Jackson cut records as a leader throughout his career for many labels including Savoy, Blue Note (1952), Prestige, Atlantic, United Artists, Impulse, Riverside, Limelight, Verve, CTI, Pablo, Music Masters, and Qwest. He died of liver cancer on October 9, 1999, at the age of 76. ~bio by Scott Yanow

Eva Simontacchi comes out with her debut album "Pure Ecstasy" for Splasc(H) Records. The first question that comes to my mind is: why did she wait so long to do it? Eva Simontacchi, in fact, has all the qualities to appear and be included in the restricted circle of classy Italian vocalists: intonation, swing, perfect pronunciation and a wide jazz culture (she is a very much appreciated vocal technique instructor).

It is evident from the very first notes that the choice of the compositions of the album is not casual at all, but is supported by an in-depth knowledge of the Broadway songbook, even under the historycal point of view, of the greatest jazz vocalists (Ella Fitzgerald in the first place). The original compositions too, written with Roberto Cipelli and Attilio Zanchi are interesting and well-arranged, especially "You Lighten Up My Life" that has an intriguing introduction followed by a beautiful melody that enhances the qualities and the vocal colours of the vocalist. In my opinion, the mood of this song, and the mood of "Pure Ecstasy" could direct the future choices of Eva Simontacchi. ~Claudio Angeleri

Other outstanding soloists here include pianist Doug Bickel, saxophonists Gary Keller, Ed Calle, Ken Mattis, Gary Lindsay, trumpeter Alex Norris, and Dante Luciani on trombone. The vocalists are simply superb.
