Listening to a tune like "Chega de Saudade," the ninth tune on trumpeter Randy Sandke's Unconventional Wisdom, there's the feeling that this quartet session is from a recorded concert: the honest, joyous drive of the rhythm section, the trumpet singing Jobim's melody and the guitar supporting it with clear harmonies that are rhythmically in sync. Yet, this turns out to be a well thought-out program of tunes that benefits from the pristine sound quality obtained in a studio environment.

Diverse yet focused, the 14 tracks of Unconventional Wisdom display not only a great trumpet player, an interesting composer and strong leader but also the expansive talents of his band mates, the most dramatic example being that of Nicki Parrott, a solid, swinging bassist who also sings. Moving from a smokin' up-tempo version of Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" to Parrott's vocals on "Django" (a Sandke original based on Debussy's "Reverie"), the effect is of a band that sounds bigger than just its four musicians.

With "Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye," Cole Porter's beautiful ballad melody is rendered first with trumpet in Eb and then modulates to G for Parrott's breathy voice, Howard Alden's guitar accompaniment and John Riley's brush work in perfect balance with the featured instruments. To say that Bill Evans' compositional work was overshadowed by his piano playing would be quite an understatement, yet "Funkallero" does pop up from time to time. Here the quartet plays the 16-bar tune with a medium-slow Latin grove with wonderful solos by Alden and Sandke, but it's Parrott's solo with deep and honest blues inflections that makes this track a must hear.

Unconventional Wisdom presents five varied Sandke originals complemented by tunes from Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin and Marty Napoleon. Besides the aforementioned "Django," "Nicki's Journey" is reminiscent of early George Russell and "December Down" portrays a bittersweet month with double-edged harmony. Don't try to force Randy Sandke into a simple category of jazz: he has a lot to offer to the open-minded listener. ~Francis Lo Kee

Barry Harris' debut Argo session captures a uniquely soulful interpretation of bop sensibilities. Light yet commanding, Breakin' It Up moves from strength to strength, belying the pianist's relative youth and inexperience. Paired with bassist William Austin and drummer Frank Gant, Harris dispenses with frills, paring familiar melodies like "Ornithology" and "All the Things You Are" to their absolute essentials. The overall approach is far more straight-ahead than his subsequent efforts, yet his signature melodic ingenuity is firmly in place. ~Jason Ankeny

The Look of the Year.

Melissa Stylianou appeared on the Toronto jazz scene eight years ago and quickly earned the esteem of the Canadian jazz community. In both 2002 and 2003, she was nominated Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards. She has headlined at major jazz festivals all over Ontario, at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia and The Brandon Jazz Festival in Manitoba. Melissa performs regularly at the country's best jazz clubs and has developed a loyal home-base audience, while her skills as a composer/lyricist have been receiving attention across Canada. In 2004, she was the recipient of a Toronto Arts Council Music Creators Grant and in 2005, Melissa was honoured to receive a Canada Council for the Arts Grant for Professional Musicians. With this grant, Melissa is currently living in New York studying composition, theory and vocal technique with Garry Dial, Theo Bleckmann and Tom Schilling. In the coming year, Melissa plans to increase national and international performance opportunities and share her work as a Canadian artist. Melissa graduated from the acting program at Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto and it was during those years that she discovered her love of jazz.

In 1997, after private studies with the renowned vocalist Carol Welsman, Melissa became the leader of her first trio featuring Richard Whiteman on piano and Artie Roth on bass. In 2001, the Trio gave way to the Melissa Stylianou Sextet (2001 – 2004) with John MacLeod, Nancy Walker, Ted Warren, Kim Ratcliffe and Artie Roth. A new trio formed out of the Sextet (with Ratcliffe and Roth) and this group held the coveted Friday evening performance slot at The Rex Hotel in Toronto from 2000 – 2005. Melissa’s current group features Rob Piltch, Andrew Downing and Davide Direnzo. The Melissa Stylianou Quartet will travel across Canada this summer to support Melissa’s third album, which features many original compositions and arrangements and is due for release in Canada in the spring of 2006 (Sleepin’ Bee Music, Festival Dist.). With funding from both the Ontario Arts Council and FACTOR, this new record introduces Melissa as a talented songwriter/lyricist as well as builds on her reputation as one of Canada’s finest interepreters of the jazz repertoire. Melissa’s debut album, it never entered my mind (SBM), was released in 1999 and features Richard Whiteman on piano and Artie Roth on bass. In 2001, Melissa released her second album, bachelorette* (SBM), to rave reviews. Both albums are available nation-wide as well as online (jazzpromo.com & cdbaby.com) and they continue to receive airplay both locally (JazzFM, CLKN, CIUT) and nationally (CBC).

National recognition has created many new opportunities for Melissa. In 2002, her original compositions were recorded for broadcast by the CBC’s JazzBeat Series and in 2004, CBC Radio invited Melissa to participate in their On Stage series at The Glenn Gould Studio. Later the same year she headlined a concert as part of The Art of Time Ensemble’s concert series, which led to another great opportunity - performing at Roy Thomspon Hall as part of the opening act for k.d. lang. This Art of Time Ensemble project has continued to expand and in November 2005, Melissa was featured in their performance at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, recorded for broadcast by CBC Radio. In May of 2006, this group will perform in Moscow. Touring nationally and internationally continues to be a part of Melissa’s artistic vision. In February 2005, Melissa performed six concerts in Quebec. She performed both jazz standards and original material, communicating with her audiences and the media entirely in French, proving herself to be a versatile and quintessentially Canadian artist. Melissa is also a dedicated educator, and will utilize these skills as she tours across Canada.

She has been on faculty at the National Music Camp since 2002 and teaches privately in Toronto. She has taught at Mohawk College, Humber College and the University of Toronto, and led workshops at the 2005 Brandon Jazz Festival. As her career progresses, Melissa has begun to gain profile in the United States. She traveled to Chicago in 2004 to record and perform with American violinist Zach Brock at the renowned jazz club The Green Mill. In August 2005, She made her New York City debut with the same band at The Rockwood Music Hall. While living in New York, Melissa plans to secure management and record distribution in the States, thus increasing her performance opportunities and developing her profile as a Canadian musician. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stylianou99

The Jazz Report was there when two taxis halted in front of The Rex Hotel delivering Harry Connick Jr. and his band. Vocalist Melissa Stylianou was performing on stage when Connick and company eased themselves in place. The crowd went wild as Stylianou called tunes with her "piano player." The wit and charm Stylianou exuded that night comes across in this collection of timeless standards."
~ Bill King, editor

"She's the sort of warm, open and secure singer for whom "style" is a means not an end...The keys here are clarity and respect, the same qualities that allow her to rev up Them There Eyes, a song irrevocably associated with Billie Holiday, and come off as quite fresh rather than simply irreverant.
~ Mark Miller, The Globe and Mail

"Melissa Stylianou is one of Toronto's more convincing jazz singers, boasting a relaxed extroversion and surprisingly subtle mood shifts."

Tchavolo first studio album since "7 nights gypsy" in 2007; I must say that the guitarist often shows its worth that live (concerts, afters, jam session ...). But it was worth the wait because this is a very great vintage. Several reasons for this; First team: Claudius Dupont, bass and Samy Daussat, accompanying guitar, a rhythm section with ruthless efficiency which "accompanies" Tchavolo last ten years; Marie-Christine Brambilla, actress, author and performer just put his poetic words of 3 pieces, which brings a welcome breath "all strings"; then the directory: 12 titles, 8 compos inspired Tchavolo in which he gives the best of himself. For the rest, Bal, petit bal, revised and corrected, a Brazil perhaps dispensable to the extent that it detracts a bit from the unity of the disc, a beautiful dream Autumn, nostalgic Bolero signed Samy Daussat for music and MC Brambilla for lyrics, combining his narration fragility and luminous presence, punctuated chorus Tchavolo great sensitivity, and of course, the inevitable clouds, in a version of a great freshness, although Tchavolo the play is a few thousand times; a version that makes sense since it is part of a triptych inspired, which begins with a wonderful solo play (there are two others of the same caliber) of serenity, aptly titled My heart, perilous exercise in great tradition of solo improvisations Django Django intense monitoring of peripheral areas, sensitive tribute to the famous gypsy (the only master Tchavolo, he never forgets to celebrate), close in spirit the last rumba Django Primitives of the future, with a poetic text by Marie Christine Brambilla, she lives fervently supported by a haunting theme and sumptuous countermelodies Tchavolo.

Bright throughout, Tchavolo is totally in control of his expression; immediately recognizable, powerful and instinctive style uses all of an instrument that sounded like no resources, combining a phenomenal flick of the wrist (notes out), alternating single sentences notes he regularly crackle with an innate sense of improvisation, composing and decomposing different patterns in ever personal variations, and chording in lightning raises and a pest swing. Tchavolo is manouche guitar pushed to the end (cf. Rue de l'Hotel Colbert or nervous Tchavolo blues). This very large disk, perhaps the most personal released this year in this highly codified aesthetic ends with a very peaceful Mélancolies evening sumptuous room a solo Tchavolo inhabited by music.Respect! The smooth jazz listing in Wikipedia includes only eight trumpeters/flugelhornists and half of them are artists whose surname starts with the letter "B." The names include Chris Botti, Rick Braun, Randy Brecker and Tom Browne, all of whom have their own style and have left their own mark. It's time for another "B" to break up the boys club and her name is Cindy Bradley, following her 2007 self-produced album Just A Little Bit with a major label debut, Bloom. This CD showcases Bradley as an extremely promising young talent who isn't simply following in the footsteps of predecessors, but striking out on some new paths of her own. Bradley's background as a sideman includes stints playing both straight ahead jazz and as a soloist with smooth jazz stalwart Pieces of a Dream. Michael Broening, the longtime producer of saxophonist Marion Meadows, handles the production here and provides Bradley plenty of opportunities to demonstrate her skill both as a player and songwriter. The title track showcases Bradley's skill on flugelhorn as it washes over Broening's shimmering, yet subtle keyboards like a warm spring shower.

Bradley alternates between flugelhorn and trumpet as the album neatly alternates between slower moodier songs and the up-tempo head-bobbers like "Swing Set" and "Uptown Drive" where Meadows drops in to engage Bradley in a sassy sax versus trumpet tete-a-tete. To her credit, Bradley, the fresh-faced rookie doesn't take a back seat as she matches Meadows, the savvy veteran, blow-for-blow. In this musical genre, a pretty face is no substitute for knowing how to play. 2008 saw the emergence of exciting new jazz women such as bassist Esperanza Spaldingto widespread approval. 2009 may find Cindy Bradley enjoying similar success. Bloom is the sweet sound of something new and fresh on the scene. ~ Jeff Winbush  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/bloom-cindy-bradley-trippin-n-rhythm-records-review-by-jeff-winbush.php#.VHvJ-smHmtg

Wave upon wave of praise has followed the release of each one of guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg's leader dates small group affairs that are typically built with equal parts energy and taste; Wave Upon Wave, balancing fire with heart, stealth movement with direct engagement, and power with grace, is likely to garner some more. The fleet-fingered Kreisberg focuses on originals here, shifting between the mellow ("Being Human") and the charged ("Until You Know"). And through it all, regardless of style and syntax, his molten-and-focused tone shines through. There's a liquid glow behind his every gesture, whether he's flowing atop drummer Colin Stranahan's spry movements in five ("From The Ashes"), taking a more reflective path, or charging into the fray ("Until You Know"). He delivers his fair share of jaw-dropping, guitar hero-esque feats during his solo stands ("Wild Animals We've Seen" and "The Spin"), but nobody would mistake this for a shred-fest. Kreisberg probes and hits hard at times, but there's also lots of breathing room to be found on this date. The band that's featured here Kreisberg's working quartet augmented by pianist Kevin Hays on half the tracks is quite an outfit.

Saxophonist Will Vinson, once again, proves to be a simpatico front line partner for Kreisberg, able to dish it out all by his lonesome or blend in beautifully with the guitarist, depending on the circumstances at hand; bassist Rick Rosato the most unassuming player on this album is the backbone of this band; Hays comes in and out of the picture, enriching the sound without altering the group dynamic; and Stranhan proves to be the X factor, bringing a lot of horsepower and creativity to the animated material, furthering the state of repose when he picks up brushes, and putting a gentle, Vernell Fournier-worthy groove behind "Stella By Starlight," one of two classics on the program. Together, these men make for a formidable combination throughout Wave Upon Wave. ~ Dan Bilawsky  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/wave-upon-wave-jonathan-kreisberg-new-for-now-music-review-by-dan-bilawsky.php#.VHeCsMmHmtg

The talented swing singer Daryl Sherman and vibraphonist John Cocuzzi pay tribute to Mildred Bailey and Red Norvo on this very enjoyable CD. Sherman does a superlative job of emulating "The Rockin' Chair Lady" without needing to change her own basic approach much on some of Bailey's greatest hits, plus a few obscurities. "Georgia on My Mind" and "Rockin' Chair" are effectively combined in a medley, the spirit of Bailey's saucy rendition of "Squeeze Me" is re-created, "It's So Peaceful in the Country" is wistful, and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" really swings. Cocuzzi (whose sound is somewhere between Norvo and Lionel Hampton) takes some fine solos, but the spectacular trumpeter Randy Sandke (reminding one of both Bunny Berigan and Charlie Shavers) steals the show every time he appears. Trombonist Randy Reinhart and clarinetist Bobby Gordon also fare well, and both "The Man I Love" (which has a memorable Sandke-Reinhart tradeoff) and "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" are taken as instrumentals. But it is Daryl Sherman's wonderful singing that makes this a particularly memorable outing. ~Review by Scott Yanow

Singer/pianist Daryl Sherman has been a fixture on the Manhattan music scene for years, playing various clubs since her arrival in 1974 and ending a 14-year run at the Waldorf-Astoria earlier this year. New O’Leans is her tribute to the survival spirit of the Crescent City’s residents, still present after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, where a parade is possible any day for any occasion.

Joined by several of the city’s top jazz musicians, including guitarist James Chirillo, clarinetist/tenor saxophonist Tom Fischer, bassist Al Menard and guest trumpeter Connie Jones, Sherman’s light, swinging vocals and subtle, effective piano complement her interesting mix of songs. One can feel the pulse of the city with her opening track “S’Mardi Gras,” which was penned by her friend Rhodes Spedale (one of many residents displaced by the storm). “Mr. Bojangles” was a hit for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the early ‘70s, though Sherman’s soft, engaging setting of Jerry Jeff Walker’s tune conveys a sense of nostalgia while also adding a personal touch in the arrangement. Dick Hyman’s “Doin’ the Chameleon” is an old-fashioned strut, punctuated by Jones’ muted trumpet, while Sherman’s moving duet of Dave Frishberg’s “Eloise” with clarinet is another gem of recent vintage.

The leader doesn’t neglect older material. Her playful take of Louis Armstrong’s nostalgic “Red Cap” and enticing medley of “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans” and “Louisiana” stand out. She sings the lyrics to Sidney Bechet’s “Petit Fleur” in both French and English, backed by Chirillo’s quiet guitar and Fischer’s bittersweet clarinet. The ‘30s era “(Belle of) New O’leans” starts with a hilarious quote from The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” then segues into a sauntering tempo. ~By Ken Dryden

Grammy award-winning trumpeter and bandleader, Irvin Mayfield, debuts his first album of holiday music with A New Orleans Creole Christmas, a collection of timeless classics reinterpreted by the widely renowned cultural ambassador of New Orleans. With his 12th release for Basin Street Records, Mayfield demonstrates his maturity as a player and arranger alongside The Jazz Playhouse Revue.
The album blends traditional-style playing on the upbeat rendition of 'O Tannenbaum O Christmas Tree' with soulful, gospel-inspired versions of 'Silent Night' and 'Winter Wonderland', and melodic, modern jazz renditions of favorites such as 'The Christmas Song' and 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's 2014 effort, Worker, is the first studio album the group have recorded since paring down to a trio in 2013. The album also follows up the group's vinyl-only Record Store Day release Millions: Live in Denver at DazzleJazz, and features the same lineup with longtime leader/pianist Brian Haas, guitarist/electronic programmer Chris Combs, and drummer Josh Raymer. On the group's previous studio album, 2011's Race Riot Suite, Haas and JFJO took a more eclectic, large ensemble approach, bringing on Sexmob trumpeter Steven Bernstein and others for an organic, free-jazz influenced vibe. On Worker, with the stripped-down trio, Haas takes the exact opposite approach, delving into a batch of tightly composed if no less groove- and jam-oriented songs. These are quirky, frenetic recordings that utilize a bevy of keyboard, organ, and guitar sounds as well as spacy electronics. Though clearly jazz-influenced, Haas and the JFJO have never been particularly interested in playing solo-oriented jazz, and Worker is no exception. Cuts like "Betamax," and "Hey Hey NSA" have an '80s-influenced, robot circus quality that's one-part Herbie Hancock's "Rock-It" and one-part sci-fi movie soundtrack. In that sense, Worker brings to mind the similarly inclined approach of bands like Kneebody, the Bad Plus, and Robert Glasper, as wells as the '90s post-rock of band's like Tortoise and Isotope 217. There's also a strong experimental quality to many of the tracks on Worker and cuts like "Council Oak" and "Mesa," with their mix of atmospheric sampled sounds, sound less like jazz or rock and more like ambient classical music. Ultimately, with Worker, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey continue to make it their business to craft intellectual, highly creative music that’s never a grind to listen to.

Amongst an abundance of stellar endorsements, Marc was humbled receiving this review...

When I listened to Marc Eliot's CD, my jaw dropped! Marc has a sensational voice and 'Broadway Energy' and I wish him much success in his great future. I honestly thought I was listening to a recording of my husband singing one of his favorite signature songs, 'Come Back To Me.' ~Mrs. Sammy Davis Jr.

Marc Eliot has audiences everywhere responding to his expressive baritone, charisma and passion for the music he sings and composes. If you're a new fan of Marc Eliot, prepare to be thoroughly entertained.

Gifted with voice, talent and charm, Marc's melodic, refreshing style is compelling for his fans. "Diamond In The Rough" and "New York Blue", two of Marc's newest compositions, are proof positive that his talent and poetic artistry are finely tuned and that his star is on the rise. New ventures and collaborations on Broadway, in television and film are on the horizon for this composer & crooner.

Creative material for Marc is inspired by a walk in Central Park and his adventures abroad. He is always thinking lyrics and melody! He believes that the overall success and appeal of a great song can come down to that very precise lyric or the one note that informs the creative process. Marc's collection "One of the Good Guys" has yielded top notices and acclaim across the country. He is following up that success with a new collection, "New York Blue".

Marc is a popular, active member of the Friars Club. When in town, he performs at this New York institution where distinguished members and invited guests always demand an encore. Marc has cultivated a solid resume in regional theater, summer stock and Off-Broadway, and has performed with various orchestras coast to coast. His goals include appearing on Broadway and the chance to sing his own compositions with symphony orchestras. Projects in the works include the new original musical "Latte Lady" and a book, "Colorways Of Time."

Until now, the one thing Branford Marsalis hasn't recorded is a solo saxophone album. In My Solitude: Live at Grace Cathedral realizes that ambition in grand style. It was meticulously planned and recorded in the same venue where Duke Ellington delivered his first Sacred Concert in 1965. Marsalis uses the cathedral's amazing acoustics as a collaborator in delivering a dazzling array of material. Playing soprano, tenor, and alto saxophones, he begins with the straight horn Steve Lacy's "Who Needs It," bringing the composition's unconventional yet wondrous scalar lyricism to the fore. He follows this on tenor with a truly soulful read of the Hoagy Carmichael standard "Stardust," allowing its bluesy undertones to shine through. He also uses the tenor for a reading of C.P.E Bach's "Sonata in A Minor for Oboe, Wq. 132." Marsalis is faithful and precise but not overly reverential, making room for some of the horn's tonal possibilities in coloring and sonorously embellishing the harmonics. There are four excellent improvisations here as well. The first is played on alto. His sure-footed arpeggios take the horn from bebop to post-bop and beyond without overplaying, creating spatial and lyrical narratives simultaneously. The concert's finest moment, however, is his alto reading of classical composer Ryo Noda's Mai, Op. 7. The work, written as a sonata for saxophone, curiously and mysteriously employs multiphonics -- textural and tonal characteristics to reflect the character of Japan's traditional shakuhachi flute. It is haunting and resonant, showcasing Marsalis' breath control across the alto's timbral range. He also contributes two original tunes. An airy ballad played on soprano, "The Moment I Recall Your Face" is as lyrical as a folk song. His walking "Blues for One" is nearly seven minutes in length and retains the 12-bar structure throughout, yet traces the history of the form as it relates to both improvisation and song. The encore "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together" -- from The Carol Burnett Show -- is a tender, sincere engagement with the tune, revealing the saxophonist's genuine love of popular culture and its influence on his work. In My Solitude is not only the completion of another chapter in Marsalis' long and varied musical career, but a peak in it. With all its elegance, warmth, and humor, this concert is a musical tour de force. ~Review by Thom Jurek

Best known for his "Mission: Impossible" theme song, Lalo Schifrin is an Argentinean-born composer, arranger, pianist, and conductor, whose jazz and classical training earned him tremendous success as a soundtrack composer. Born Boris Claudio Schifrin in Buenos Aires on June 21, 1932, his father was a symphonic violinist, and he began playing piano at age six. He enrolled in the Paris Conservatoire in 1952, hitting the jazz scene by night. After returning to Buenos Aires, Schifrin formed a 16-piece jazz orchestra, which helped him meet Dizzy Gillespie in 1956. Schifrin offered to write Gillespie an extended suite, completing the five-movement Gillespiana in 1958; the same year, he became an arranger for Xavier Cugat. In 1960, he moved to New York City and joined Gillespie's quintet, which recorded "Gillespiana" to much general acclaim. Schifrin became Gillespie's musical director until 1962, contributing another suite in "The New Continent"; he subsequently departed to concentrate on his writing. He also recorded as a leader, most often in Latin jazz and bossa nova settings, and accepted his first film-scoring assignment in 1963 (for Rhino!). Schifrin moved to Hollywood late that year, scoring major successes with his indelible themes to Mission: Impossible and Mannix. Over the next decade, Schifrin would score films like The Cincinnati Kid, Bullitt, Cool Hand Luke, Dirty Harry, and Enter the Dragon. As a jazzer, he wrote the well-received "Jazz Mass" suite in 1965, and delved into stylish jazz-funk with 1975's CTI album Black Widow. Schifrin continued his film work all the way through the '90s; during that decade, he recorded a series of orchestral jazz albums called Jazz Meets the Symphony, and became the principal arranger for the Three Tenors, which complemented his now-dominant interest in composing classical music. ~bio by Steve Huey

Lucy Woodward's 2010 album Hooked!, a jazz-inflected collection of classic pop and torch song ballads, makes the most of Woodward's soulful voice. Having long moved past the mainstream pop/rock of her 2003 debut, While You Can, Hooked picks up where her 2008 sophomore effort, ...Is Hot and Bothered, left off, with Woodward delivering a kind of pop/rock-meets-jazz sound that falls somewhere between the retro R&B and singer/songwriter pop of such similarly inclined artists as Duffy and Jamie Cullum. In that sense, songs such as the cheeky "Another Woman" and the yearning "Slow Recovery" will certainly draw some favorable comparisons to such icons as Dusty Springfield. Certainly, these songs are produced with an ear to re-creating the big ensemble pop of the '50s and '60s, and fans of that old-school Brill Building sound should find Hooked! to be an appealing catch. ~ Matt Collar  http://www.allmusic.com/album/hooked!-mw0001968700

If Oli Silk is the British version of Brian Culbertson, Jonathan Fritzén is the Swedish edition of Brian Culbertson, the 36-year-old American pianist known for his melodic and much-imitated style. That style puts memorable pop music, much of it love songs, at the top of the to-do list, with liberal proffering of warm and fuzzy piano runs. It’s a highly likable style, and one that seems easy but is actually difficult to pull off. Like Silk, Fritzén succeeds. The pianist, who has a master’s degree in jazz studies from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, is an auteur in the studio, as he plays guitar, bass and programs multiple instruments and sounds.

His smooth-jazz is mellow for a twentysomething performer, but he’s also a romantic at heart. His music has a groove that takes it far out of the standard easy-listening category, which Culbertson also designs to perfection. Acoustic keyboards are accented by electric keyboard shout-outs and a profusion of computerized blips. “Temple of Dreams” and “Back 2 to the Club” would sell as hits on any smooth-jazz radio station in the States, while tracks like “Deep Down” and “Far Away” are snuggle-worthy or just a fine complement to an equally fine companion. ~ Brian Soergel  http://jazztimes.com/articles/24464-love-birds-jonathan-fritz-n
