The music on this New World release (originally put out by Master Jazz) is very much in the vein of Count Basie. Buddy Tate (playing tenor and clarinet in addition to taking a few of Jimmy Rushing-style vocals) is joined by fellow tenor Paul Quinichette (making one of his few recordings of the 1970's), pianist Cliff Smalls (an underrated swing player), bassist Major Holley and drummer Jackie Williams. Other than the opening original "The Texas Twister" and Tate's ballad feature on "Talk Of The Town," all of the music is from the Basie book including "Chicago," "Boogie Woogie" and "Topsy." All of the musicians(most of whom were not making too many recordings in the mid-1970's) sound somewhat inspired and are in fine form. ~Scott Yanow

Unintentionally of course, Arif Mardin crafted his own eulogy. Naturally, given Mardin’s stature as arguably the most accomplished arranger/producer of the past half-century — the genius responsible for everything from Dusty Springfield’s landmark Dusty In Memphis to Barry Gibb’s career-altering falsetto, the stratospheric launch of the Average White Band and the equally meteoritic blast-off of Norah Jones — it is shaped of music. Mardin aptly referred to what would ultimately become All My Friends Are Here (NuNoise Records) as his “life’s work.” Begun in 2005 and completed by his son and co-producer Joe after Mardin’s death, in June 2006 at age 74 of pancreatic cancer, it is an incomparably rich, atmospheric celebration of all aspects of the 12-time Grammy winner’s vibrant life and career.

Mardin wrote or co-wrote all but one of the album’s 13 tracks. Some, like the exquisitely romantic “Longing for You” (written when Mardin was 23 as a ode to his then fiancée Latife) date back decades. Others are brand new. To perform this heady potpourri of songs, father and son assembled more than a dozen of the artists whose careers Mardin launched and molded, including Bette Midler, Norah Jones, Raul Midón, Barry Gibb, Chaka Khan, Danny O’Keefe, the Average White Band, Daryl Hall and Felix Cavaliere. ~Christopher Loudon

In keeping with the drift of Rhino's Very Best Of volumes, this 16-track disc provides a more concise, budget-minded retrospective for listeners who might not want a set that offers twice as much or more (in this case, Rhino's own two-disc Funkify Your Life anthology). That's not necessarily a criticism -- funk grooves can get tiring over the course of two hours if you're not a rhythm fiend. Should you want to keep your Meters to the one-sitting level, this smartly chosen, well-annotated set is fine, including all of the cuts ("Cissy Strut," "Sophisticated Cissy," "Look-Ka Py Py," "Hey Pocky A-Way," "Fire on the Bayou") you'd expect to find on a greatest-hits set. ~Richie Unterberger

Rosa Passos is a contemporary singer in Brazil who is dedicated to a genuine evolution of Brazilian music, devoid of fashionable trends or commercialism. She has established herself firmly in the country’s artistic scenery, acknowledged by such artists as João Gilberto, Maria Schneider, Clare Fisher, Paquito D’Rivera, Johnny Alf, Nana Caymmi (who recorded two of her compositions), and even the number one enemy of bossa nova, the music researcher J.R. Tinhorão.

Passos’s father was very fond of music and he started all his six children on an instrument. Passos’s perfect pitch capabilities led her to begin playing the piano at the age of 3. When she was 11, she heard João Gilberto’s Orfeu do Carnaval, which changed her life. Passos abandoned the study of piano and decided to be a singer. She began listening to Gilberto compulsively, and learned the violão from listening to Gilberto’s records. Her other vocal influences were Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Shirley Horn (who has declared herself to be a fan), Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. However, Rosa’s main influences remain João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi.

Blue Note's The Return of Art Pepper: The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings compiles the 13 final masters that the alto saxophonist recorded for Aladdin between August 1956 and January 1957. These are titled The Return of Art Pepper, since they were recorded shortly after he completed a jail sentence in 1956. As a result, Pepper's chops are a little rusty, but you can hear that he still has a passion for playing, and he does improve over the course of these tracks. For serious Pepper fans, it's worth a listen, but for less dedicated fans, there are better places to become acquainted with his work. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

In the liner notes Joe Alterman says he hopes the music brings a smile to your face...If it doesn't hang in there because your autopsy report should be back soon. Alterman is joined by an all star band made up of tenor sax titan Houston Person and finished off with a rhythm section of critically acclaimed bassist Ruben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Diversity is the key to success here with a amazing mix of trio, 4tet and solo piano work which allows Georgia Sunset to avoid the predictability that similar releases often find.

Clearly an old soul trapped in a young mans body, the covers here are eclectic yet highly accessible. "For Once In My Life" and "Moonlight Becomes You" are inspired works with Alterman's harmonic movement bringing to mind such legends as Bill Evans and Cedar Walton. The swing of the original "Georgia Sunset" borders on addictive while a tune that was co-written with Les McCann aptly titled "The Theme" reinforces the blatantly obvious that this is an artist as technically proficient as he is artistically gifted.

Some reviews write themselves and Georgia Sunset is no exception. This is an old school made new cool sound that will have heads turning in short order. A stellar way to kick off a new year! ~ Brent Black  http://www.criticaljazz.com/2015/01/joe-alterman-georgia-sunset-2015.html

Veronica Mortensen is a treasured vocalist and talented songwriter. In 2013 she received an honorary award from the Danish composers’ association DPA for her songwriting. This was after the release of her previous album Catching Waves, on which most tracks bore her signature. Her new album, Presents Passed, is the first of five releases with no songwriting contributions from her hand. The repertoire on Presents Passed exclusively features jazz standards. It is a necessary release, says Veronica. “There are so many great songs, and it would irk me if I never took the opportunity in my career to record a few of them. I could never have written these songs myself, so it feels like a privilege to sing them. I think of them as small jewels  presents if you will passed down from another time. Thus the album title, Presents Passed”. She deliberately avoided the most well known standards that have been interpreted so many times before.

She chose songs that have made a deep impression on her the lyrics, the tunes. The new album features songs by composers like Thad Jones, Michel Legrand, Mel Torme and others. Veronica passes them gently and lovingly on to us, so we may feel them too. More than anything, Veronica is an interpreter. She tells a story with extreme presence, blending almost humbly with the music and the great musicians surrounding her. “I wanted to record an album with a subdued atmosphere, an album you feel like listening to an evening when you light a few candles and pour a glass of wine. I feel we have succeeded. The fine musicians on the recording had a good feel for the mood I was looking for”, she says.  And it is wonderful!

Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff didn't co-lead a studio date until 1986, when Bob Porter (one of the top producers in the soul-jazz field) produced their Soul Survivors album for Milestone. But alto saxman Crawford and organist McGriff should have recorded together long before that because they have so much in common. Both are soul-jazz/hard bop heavyweights, and both thrive on jazz that is funky, earthy, blues-drenched, and quite accessible; as a rule, blues and R&B lovers who don't care for the more abstract, cerebral styles of jazz have no problem getting into Crawford or McGriff. And they will have no problem getting into this fine collection, which offers a 75-minute sample of material that the veteran improvisers recorded as co-leaders from 1986-1998.

Everything on The Best of Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff was produced by Porter, who has produced countless soul-jazz sessions over the years. So not surprisingly, this 2001 release is full of state-of-the-art soul-jazz. Crawford and McGriff enjoy a strong rapport whether they are getting into hard-swinging up-tempo fare on "One Mint Julep" (a major hit for Ray Charles in 1961) and Lester Young's "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" or lyrical ballad playing on "Second Time Around" and "Because of You." None of the material is groundbreaking; in the '80s and '90s, Crawford and McGriff excelled by sticking with the type of down-home stuff they had been embracing since the '50s. The Best of Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff isn't difficult, ultra-intellectual jazz that will scare away R&B, rock, and pop fans this is grits-and-gravy music, and accessibility is the rule on these inspired Crawford/McGriff encounters. ~ Alex Henderson  http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-best-of-hank-crawford-and-jimmy-mcgriff-mw0000017212

Barbara Fasano has been hailed as one of the nation’s most stunning and soulful singers. Frank Scheck of The New York Post raves, "Fasano is a gorgeous, soulful singer who has an actor’s intensity in whatever she sings." Whether singing a song by Joni Mitchell or Harold Arlen or Cole Porter, Fasano takes her audience on a spellbinding, emotional musical journey. A 2010 New York Nightlife Award winner, and a regular performer at New York’s most prestigious supper club, The Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel, her new show with Eric Comstock, “HELLUVA TOWN: A New York Soundtrack”, enjoyed an acclaimed and sold-out run earlier this year. The New York Times’ Stephen Holden called it “exhilarating”, singling out Fasano as a “lyrically sensitive interpreter” and comparing her to one of her idols, Lena Horne. “Mr. Comstock and Ms. Fasano are turning the neighborhood into a hotbed of pleasure.”

Fasano’s exquisite voice reaches deep into the soul of humanity. “She illuminates with torchlight,” according to David Finkle of The Huffington Post. “The slim, raven-haired Fasano continually allows feelings to simmer and crackle, singing Cole Porter's ‘In the Still of the Night’ as well or better than anyone has ever sung it.” Rex Reed of The New York Observer notes, "She gives off palpable electricity”, and NEXT’s David Hurst declares , “Fasano is nothing short of a revelation, with the poise and jazz chops to go with her beauty to create a formidable singer.” Theatermania’s Brian Scott Lipton simply states, “Fasano, who sounds better than ever, once again proves herself to be a remarkably expressive singer.”

Wall Street Journal jazz critic Will Friedwald calls Barbara “a charismatic stylist who effectively channels the spirits of the great über-divas Lena Horne and Barbra Streisand” in his new book The Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers (Pantheon, 2010). On her CD, “Written In The Stars”, a Harold Arlen collection, she surrounds herself with an A-list jazz ensemble, including John di Martino on piano. The CD has garnered praise in publications as diverse as JazzTimes and Playbill, and receives radio play around the world. The New Republic’s David Hajdu raves, “With this record, Barbara Fasano proves that she is not just a great Italian crooner, an heir to Sinatra for our time, but a jazz singer of the first rank.” Barbara’s previous CD, “The Girls of Summer”, is an eclectic mix ranging from Springsteen to Sondheim, and based on her one-woman show of the same title. Both of these CDs were named Record of the Year by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Back Stage Bistro awards, and her work as a live performer has twice earned her awards for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Barbara grew up in a spirited Italian Catholic household – excellent preparation for a life in show business! From her early childhood, music and stories were a way of life. Her mother made the Sunday lasagna while listening to Italian American singers like Jerry Vale on the radio. Her father listened to Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby and sang along in an effortless baritone, teaching Barbara many of his favorite songs. From the early Streisand albums, she learned the music of her favorite composer, Harold Arlen, and learned to play the guitar, memorizing recordings by Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and other singer-songwriters. Combine all this with her grandparents’ stories of Neapolitan singers and vaudeville and you see how her musical identity was forged. Within her eclectic choices, what remains consistent is her ability to invest a lyric with deep emotional truth, creating virtual one-act plays out of each song.

Barbara’s many New York headline engagement include concert appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s American Songbook at the Allen Room, Rose Hall, Town Hall and New York’s 92nd Street Y’s Lyrics and Lyricists series. Starring engagements in cabaret and nightclubs include The Algonquin, Feinstein’s, The Carlyle, Birdland, Iridium, and Café Sabarsky. Arts centers and music festivals across the country include Caramoor, Arizona Jazz Festival, Jersey Jazz, Kanbar Center, Cooperstown Music Festival, and Kerrytown Concert House. In the words of jazz critic Ira Gitler, she “has it all, and then some … artistic, swinging, and superbly entertaining.”

11. Letting Go (4:39)

Pianist/composer Jacky Terrasson makes his Impulse! label debut with the February 24, 2015 release of Take This, a sparkling new album that captures the quintessence of his multifaceted musical makeup, which draws upon modern post-bop, pop, hip-hop, European classical, and African and Afro-Caribbean rhythms and melodies. Terrasson will celebrate with release event performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz Lincoln Center in New York City March 13-15. Further tour dates will be announced shortly.

Being the product of a French father and an American mother, the 49-year-old Terrasson has built a distinguished, two-decade plus career by threading musical links between various cultures and nationalities. On Take This, he convenes a truly international band featuring American bassist Burniss Travis, Cuban-born drummer Lukmil Perez, Malian percussionist Adama Diarra, and Afro-French vocalist and human beatbox virtuoso Sly Johnson, forming a hip cosmopolitan combo that represents jazz’s expansive global mindedness while still affirming its African-American roots.

Take This boasts four Terrasson originals starting off with the opening, “Kiff,” on which Terrasson pairs his jovial piano and keyboard melodies with Johnson’s lissome, wordless vocals. Terrasson deftly infuses Afro-Cuban melodicism on the delightful “Dance,” which also provides the perfect vehicle for Diarra’s splendid percussion work alongside Johnson’s shadowy beatbox ingenuity. “November” bounces to vivacious yet sensitive Caribbean beat propelled by Perez and Travis as Terrasson unravels labyrinthine passages marked by cogent melodicism and spry rhythms. Terrasson reveals his balladry mastery on the sensual “Letting Go.”

The album also contains nine surprising covers that range from inventive takes on a handful of jazz standards – Bud Powell’s “Un Poco Loco,” the Miles Davis/Bill Evans ballad “Blue In Green” and Paul Desmond’s “Take Five”— a riveting piano-vocal duo rendition of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” an ebullient reading of Henri Salvador’s 1950 French-Caribbean hit, “Maladie D’Amour” and a jazz/hip-hop makeover of Gotye’s 2011 international pop hit, “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

Throughout, Terrasson enlivens the music with sleek improvisations, rhythmic fluidity and an impeccable touch – all of which have become hallmarks to his singular sound. He also ignites a rapport with his band mates that favors memorable and importantly meaningful musical dialogue over callow pyrotechnics, making Take This another welcoming musical adventure in Terrasson’s oeuvre.

About Jacky Terrasson:
Jacky Terrasson (born 1965) is an internationally renowned Franco-American pianist, composer and bandleader, who recorded his debut as a leader in 1992. The following year, he won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition then toured with the legendary Betty Carter, both of which propelled him to the top echelon of the jazz world. In addition to releasing 10 memorable albums on Blue Note Records between 1994-2007, he’s recorded for Concord Records and Universal France. During his distinguished career, Terrasson has also worked with notable jazz artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Stefon Harris, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jimmy Scott and Dianne Reeves.

...It all started with that mythical viper who bites his tail and rolls along like a greased wheel. It was 1985 in Nashville, TN, and 3rd-grader Erik Deutsch had just won his school's songwriting contest with his first original tune, 'Hoopsnake'. The prize? Get together with a songwriter, add some chords and such, and perform that sucker at the Country Music Hall of Fame. That, ladies and gentlemen, was Erik's first gig, so it doesn't come as too much of a surprise that 30 years later he's introducing Outlaw Jazz to the world.

Outlaw Jazz is Deutsch's melding of the psychedelic soul-jazz sounds from his last record, Demonio Teclado, with the classic sounds of outlaw country, rhythm and blues, and southern funk. In a way, he's been an outlaw in the jazz world for a while now--never quite fitting with the straight ahead cats, the avant garde scene, the jammers, or the funksters--but continuing to make independent records and blaze his own trail, and always with the pedal to the metal. Erik's mom came from an old Nashville family, and having spent a part of his childhood there, the country music has always been a part of his musical make-up. Combine that with a chance meeting with a certain Nashvillian, and Deutsch had the ingredients to bring this record to life.

Erik remembers going over to Shooter Jennings house many times as a child. His younger brother was a pal of Shooter's, and there were countless pick-ups, drop-offs, and parties where these guys were hanging out. Shooter, the son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, got a quick start to his prolific career and has been in the public eye a good deal for the past 15 years. When Erik heard Shooter was moving to NYC in 2010, he reached out through some old friends. It'd been 25 years since these two had seen each other, but it only took a couple minutes before they felt like best friends. A couple years on the road and two albums later, their musical bond was strong, and Deutsch had an idea about how he could extend this inspiration into his own sound.

He started writing some music that had a little bit of country in it, all the while listening to records by Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Floyd Cramer, and of course Waylon. He launched his first-ever Kickstarter campaign and was overwhelming successful (raising more than $17,000 with 180 backers). The next step was to assemble a crack band: the core of Tony Mason (drums), Jeff Hill (bass), Jon Gray (trumpet), and Avi Bortnick (guitar) were joined by Jon Graboff (steel guitar), Scott Metzger (guitar), Steve Elliot (guitar), Tony Leone (drums), Jon Stewart (sax), and Mike McGinnis (sax). It was Deutsch's dream band, and after three days of recording and a couple weeks of Jeff Hill mixing, the results speak for themselves. Featuring five originals, three covers, and three memorable vocal performances (including Shel Silverstein's 'Whistlers and Jugglers' with Shooter), Deutsch has forged into new, exciting territory that brims with joy, creativity, and funky beauty. In an era of idiomatic recycled music, Outlaw Jazz stands out as a truly original, heartfelt album.

Fast forward to now, as Deutsch just inked a record contract with Nashville upstart label Cumberland Brothers. Chenault Sanders, Jake Sanders, and Nick Worley (son of legendary Nashville producer Paul Worley) are the 'Brothers' to whom the label refers, and just so happen to have met Erik in 1st grade--1982, Nashville, TN. The desire for Deutsch to join a label for the first time in over a decade was strong; the fact that he's joining forces with two life-long friends on a Nashville-based label is brilliant. It really couldn't have played out any better.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the joyful noise that is "Outlaw Jazz". There's a lot of history here, folks…trust me, you can hear it in the music.

Andy brings a fresh contemporary take to his material while staying true to the sound of the original era. The variety of his repertoire and its delivery is built to enthrall his audiences and keeps Andy top of the list of entertainers in Canada.

“Colors” is Andy’s debut album released in 2015. This project, generously composing 15 recordings, is an accurate showcase of the crooner’s wide musical spectrum both in repertoire and technique.

Andy’s vocal sound is bright and unique and not just like any other baritone. His phrasing plays with the melody just enough and it goes with the exotic sound of the music. Andy’s release “Colors” blends the time-honoured American standards with widespread universal classics and original material delivered in different music genres. The song selection and musical arrangements harmonizes, in a rare form, both the cool mood of the confined gritty lounge with the aspirant exotic utopia beyond.

Illustrative of it’s mosaic nature Andy is honoured to record with sublime talent from different corners of Canadian Jazz: Robi Botos, Sean Bellaviti, Terry Clarke, Kelly Jefferson, Braxton Hicks, Steve MacDonald and William Sperandei (to mention a few).

Five years ago, the smooth jazz world was treated to the remarkable breezy, easy, tropical sound of steel pan charm from Bickley Rivera with her Bickley Riverarelease Chillin’ After Five. Just as sure as I am that the album produced a collective ‘wow!” from listeners, her latest project Breaking’ the Mold will take you to yet another level of appreciation.

This latest offering of Caribbean bliss finds her exotic pan jazz sound blending with guest collaborators like guitarist Steve Oliver (who also produced this fine work), bassist Eddie Reddick, saxman Will Donato, Spyro Gyra members Tom Schuman (keys) and Bonny B (drums), and fellow steel pan artist Andy Narell.

Among the delightfully melodic pieces here are her lead sunshine-bright and springy track “Let’s Kick It,” the intoxicatingly rhythmic and exotic “Latin Ride” with that trademark Steve Oliver guitar touch, her wonderfully snappy take on Spyro Gyra’s classic “Morning Dance,” the sexy, sauntering “Make You Mine,” the lively and robust “Que Sabor,” and the oh-so-suave finale “Emerald Flow.” There are other gems to be found here, as well. Without a doubt, Rivera again weds herself to the sounds of island magic with the appeal of a stroll along a beach splashed with a glowing sunrise or soft sunset.

There is such a savory caress to Rivera’s approach, even when the tempo is lively and robust. Whenever you need to escape to a place of pleasant dreams and desires, whether in reality or imagined, you want this to be the music to accompany you there. Breaking the Mold is a truly masterful, feel-good effort. — Ronald Jackson

The title of this exciting meeting between the tenors of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt was rather poignant, because this recording was released in the late '60s, when Ammons was serving a long jail sentence for possession of heroin, and it appeared that he and Stitt might never meet up again. Backed by pianist John Houston, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer George Brown, Ammons and Stitt (who had co-led a regular group a decade before) proved once again to be a perfect team, jamming on a variety of standards, blues, and ballads while also revisiting "New Blues Up and Down." The two tenors always brought out the best in each other, and luckily, they would get back together in the early '70s. This is high-quality bebop. ~Scott Yanow

On the 17th of September 1996 a young woman, accompanied by a few dozen family and friends, attended her own tribute concert in a small club in the Washington, DC area. Transcending the effects of chemotherapy and morphine in that moment, the singer abandoned her walker and was helped onto the stage for what would be her final performance, What a Wonderful World. A few weeks later Eva Cassidy passed away, having been diagnosed with melanoma months earlier. Refusing to bend her music to the industry s conventions and expectations, Eva was known only within the DC area during her lifetime. She left behind one live album, a duet album, and various studio demos and live recordings. In these intervening 16 years, Eva's music has proven timeless and universal. Crossing all boundaries-musical, cultural, geographical-her voice survived and is finding new listeners every day in every corner of the earth. Released on the eve of what would have been her 50th birthday these twenty performances document Eva Cassidy's musical legacy for the ages.
