When one thinks of New Orleans jazz, it is of Dixieland, but in the early '60s there were several talented local modern jazzmen (many of whom eventually went into teaching) who were open to the influence of the more advanced New York jazz. Pianist Ellis Marsalis (the future father of the Marsalis clan but at the time fairly unknown) heads a quartet on this CD that also includes the forgotten but excellent tenor saxophonist Nat Perrilliat (who was most influenced by John Coltrane of a few years earlier), bassist Marshall Smith and drummer James Black. An LP from the AFO (All for One) label (The Monkey Puzzle) has been reissued in full on this CD along with three numbers later released on a sampler and a previously unissued version of "Night in Tunisia." Black and Marsalis contributed seven of the 11 songs; the quartet also performs Perrilliat's "Little Joy" and three jazz standards. Ella Gahnt is a Philly-based Jazz vocalist who has been dubbed "Philly's Class Act" by local media and fans. She has performed throughout the Philly, Tri-State area and New York at various popular venues with her ensemble and other groups. Ella tells musical stories in her own unique way while honoring the vocal legacy of Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Carmen McCrae, Betty Carter and Ella Fitzgerald.

"Third Stage of Elegance" is Ella Gahnt's third CD, but unlike her other two - "Immaculate Union" and "By Request," this CD contains all originals written by Ella, Leon Mitchell, and a cut shared with songwriter-pianist Carol Frazier. In "Third Stage of Elegance," Ella Gahnt bends the fabric of Jazz with her voice and style. All of the different vocal influences like those treasured vocalists mentioned above and also Roberta Flack and Nina Simone, are evident and channeled through her singing. The stories she tells with these songs are her own that come from her life, love and spiritual experiences. On this thoroughly entertaining quintet session, twins Will and Peter Anderson team up with one of the most renowned and beloved siblings in jazz history, drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, who turns 80 on May 31. No surprise, then, that the young reedmen sound as if they’re fully enjoying the cross-familial connection here, buoyed by Heath’s rhythmic joie de vivre. Of course, given the Andersons’ bop-rooted influences and Heath’s obvious compatibility, who would have expected anything less?

The title and opening cut, one of eight tunes penned by the Andersons for this outing, is emblematic of the album’s virtues. The frontline—Peter on tenor saxophone, Will on alto—introduces a vibrant, spiraling theme that soon gives way to a series of fluid turns from the reedmen and pianist Jeb Patton. All the while Heath is in delightful form, nimbly accenting, prodding and interjecting, before fashioning a crisply syncopated break. “Presque Vu,” the following performance, is more melodically stealthy, but again the saxes add colorful contrasts, and the rhythm section, fortified by bassist David Wong, is lifted by Heath’s always-salutary presence. “Belfast Blues,” its title notwithstanding, is actually a burner that also reveals the band’s cohesiveness and spirit. When Heath sits out on several cuts, drummer Phil Stewart prevents lulls from settling in, though he quietly enhances the mood during an insinuatingly lyrical, alto-limned performance of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.” Like “Lover Man” and “Rachel,” a woven ballad composed by Peter for his wife, it’s yet another reminder that when it comes to elegantly embellishing and resolving a romantic theme, the Andersons excel. ~By Mike Joyce

Jan Smigmator (1986) is a jazz and swing singer, who has adopted the legacy of easy listening vocalists such was Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Mel Tormé and the living legend Tony Bennett.

His style, phrasing and love for jazz and swing music make him one of the artists of this genre in our country. In 2008 Jan successfully finished his music studies at the Prague conservatory in singing (department of pop music and jazz). During his studies he had performed with jazz musicians and orchestras! In 2005 he became a soloist of the legendary Václav Hybš Orchestra with whom he had performed dozens of concerts around Czech Republic.

Jan’s greatest love is singing with big bands; you could catch him as a vocalist of Big Band Polná, West Big Band, Sváta Cech Czech Summit Big Band, Kolín Big Band, Moravia Big Band and also an often guest of Karel Vlach Orchestra, Czech Radio Big Band, Rudolf Mazac Kentonmania Big Band or small bands like Adam Tvrdý Trio, Metropolitan Jazz Band, Bonus Orchestra or Polydor sextet.

Jan Smigmator also performs with his Swinging trio, great gutarist Milan Kašuba and Josef Vejvoda Trio. Jan’s repertoire is very wide, he sings songs from the golden swing era to jazz standards and evergreens to the contemporary pop music.

Prior to her starmaking turn as a nightclub singer on the television classic Peter Gunn, Lola Albright recorded this slight but alluring session for Roost. Al Caiola is a guitarist who initially made his reputation as a session musician, playing on records made by Percy Faith and Andre Kostelanetz, among others. Caiola was the conductor and arranger for United Artists Records in the late '40s and early '50s. After leaving UA, he signed with RCA, where he released a number of singles in the '50s. In the early '60s, he went back to United Artists, which is where he scored his first hit with the theme to the film The Magnificent Seven. The single peaked at 35 in early 1961 and it was quickly followed by the theme to the television series Bonanza, which climbed to number 19. For the rest of the '60s, Caiola released a number of easy listening instrumental albums. During the decade he also hosted a television show, which was only aired for a short while. What’s a quick way for young jazz musicians to appear out of their league? Book some studio time with pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Kenny Washington. But saxophonists (and identical twins) Peter and Will Anderson consistently rise to the challenge on Correspondence, displaying a firm grounding in bop/postbop tradition and demonstrating impressive harmonic and rhythmic assurance. Robust tandem passages and fluid improvisations generate lots of color and contrast, with Peter, on tenor, and Will, on alto, reinvigorating “Shaw ’Nuff” and other jazz and pop classics. Better yet are the original tunes, such as Will’s ever-spiraling romp “Go Ahead!,” which point to an exceedingly bright future. Svante Thuresson (born 7 February 1937 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a Swedish jazz music musician and singer. He started his career as a drummer, before joining the band Gals and Pals in 1963. Svante won the national selection and represented Sweden in the Eurovision song contest in 1966 with "Nygammal vals", and came in second place; he performed with Lill Lindfors. In 2002, he released Nya kickar, which rose the classic/jazz charts in Sweden. When a jazz musician has been around as long as pianist George Cables, and has seen, heard and performed with so many other world-class musicians, such interactions are bound to leave a lasting impression, and on the trio date Icons and Influences Cables warmly salutes a number of those who have helped frame his musical persona and escorted him along a journey of wonder and discovery that has enabled him to become the superbly talented artist he is today.

As most listeners would assume, several of Cables' influences are fellow pianists, and those remembered here include Cedar Walton, Bill Evans, Mulgrew Miller, Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington. While Nat Cole, acknowledged with "The Very Thought of You," was also a pianist, Cables says he was inspired more by Cole's vocal talents, along with those of Tony Bennett, on Ray Noble's venerable standard. "Nature Boy," he writes, was prompted not by Cole but by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's instrumental version. Other tenors represented are Benny Golson ("Blue Heart") and Joe Henderson ("Isotope") as well as vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson ("Little B's Poem"). Cables plumbs his own early years with "Happiness," the "first tune [he] wrote" while in his early 20s, and Trinidadian Lord Kitchener's "Mo' Pan," one of the many calypso tunes Cables played or heard while growing up in Brooklyn and Queens, NY. Whatever the source, the salient point is that every one of these tunes shines like a polished gem in Cables' masterful hands. 

Tempos are flawless, interpretations admirable, ad-libs smooth and persuasive, the framework lucid and sunny yet emphatic when need be, as on "Isotope" or "Mo' Pan." As for the comfort zone, it is spacious, thanks to the unwavering resilience of bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Victor Lewis whose cozy shelter is always close at hand. In every instance, Cables lays bare the unique essence of his role models, and nowhere is this more apparent than on Brubeck's "The Duke," Evans' "Very Early" or his own compositions, "Cedar Walton" and "Mulgrew Miller." Dedications aside, this is a splendid trio session led by one of the jazz world's more proficient and accessible contemporary pianists. The Hammond B-3 soul-jazz sound of Big John Patton (as he was then called) was perfect for the 1960s. It was the groove that drew attention and Patton made several albums for Blue Note. As his style went out of favor, some of the recordings never saw the light of day until almost 20 years later and at the same time Patton slipped into the background. He resurfaced in the 1980s and went into the studio. Among his albums Soul Connection, originally released in 1983 on Nilva Records (the label owned by drummer Alvin Queen) has now been re-released.

Patton had a strong band with him on this record. Trombonist Grachan Moncur III fits in just nicely. Moncur never shies from a challenge and his playing here is strong and imaginative. Guitarist Melvin Sparks has found his calling in several hyphenated jazz genres including acid, soul and funk, and saxophonist Grant Reed has played with Mongo Santamaria. Queen has a lively history having been part of the sound set up by Junior Mance, Stanley Turrentine and Charles Tolliver, among others. The band is the perfect conglomeration for the music here.

The title track kicks off the jam, with Moncur and Reed setting up the soul-jazz atmosphere. The melody grabs instantly and once the horns are established, Patton comes in. He stays with the melody but extrapolates it with a compact sense of direction, ringing the changes with just a little grease to slip and slide in and out of the groove. Reed injects boppish lines to give the tune a nice change of direction.

The band is in its element as they make "Extensions" swing. Sparks literally fires the first salvo with notes that light up the melody as he plays with an easy gait. Reed is hardy, hitting the deep end with taut notes, once more driving the tune into bop territory. Patton changes the tenor, the organ providing a lighter air as he prances lithely while Queen pushes the front line with his crisp accents and sense of rhythm. It all falls neatly into place.

Time has not effaced nor worn the impact of this music. It is still relevant, making this a welcome re-issue. ~by Jerry D'Souza

Born in Pavia Italy, Ada's love for music began at the age of 4 when she began studying piano under the guidance of her grandmother. With persistent enthusiasm she continued her study of piano for 13 years, well into her first years high school.

During high school she began to listen to Blues, Jazz and Funk. It was at this time that Ada, drawn to these unique musical genres and already significantly accomplished for her age in piano, decided to pursue the saxophone.

After high school Ada studied with G. Comeglio and, in the following interval, with the "Jazz Company Big Band" and the "Jazz Class Orchestra". It was during this period that she had the chance to perform with famous soloists such as Phil Woods, Jerry Bergonzi, Randy Brecker, Lee Konitz, Bob Mintzer, Bob Malach, Antonia Bennett, Mike Richmond, Herb Pomeroy and Franco Ambrosetti.

In 1992 Ada was awarded a scholarship at UMBRIA Jazz with a "Special Recognition for Outstanding Musicianship" from the prestigious Berkley College of Music in BOSTON, USA

During the following months and years her time was spent between Italy and the US where she attended The Berkley College in Boston Ma. immersing herself in the study of arrangement and composition with Joe Viola, George Garzone, Fred Lipsius, Herb Pomeroy and other notable music academics.

After her studies in the USA Ada moved to Paris which led to her performing/touring with the "Chance Orchestra", a jazz-funk band, throughout Europe and Africa as well as involving herself in numerous collaborative projects with different artists.

After touring she returned to Italy where her work was devoted to everything from Pop to Jazz. It is at this time that Ada became involved in recording with MINA in "Canarino Mannaro", touring with Camilla and Quartiere Latino, Romano Mussolini and performing with Bruno De Filippi, Franco Cerri and Enrico Intra. And when not touring or performing her time was spent either composing or arranging for notable European Big Bands.

In 1997 Ada moved to New York City where she has appeared with an impressive and diverse list of artists and bands such as: Les Paul, Antonia Bennett plus special appearances with Tony Bennett, Barbara Carroll, Kit McClure Big Band, Diva Big Band, Phil Markowitz, Howard Williams Big Band, Harvey Swartz, Freddie Bryant,Gene Bertoncini, Eddie Henderson, Sylvia Cuenca, Jill McCarron, Ingrid Jensen, Deanna Witkowski and many many others.

When in New York Ada Rovatti leads two different bands:

The Ada Rovatti Jazz Quartet/Quintet - A straight ahead group in which Ada Rovatti performs mostly her compositions and arrangements.

Elephunk - A nine piece group of extraordinary musicians with which Ada Rovatti performs and directs her arrangements and compositions.

Renowned jazz artists such as Randy Brecker, the late Bob Berg, Adam Nussbaum, Dawn Thomson and many others have performed Ada Rovatti's compositions at numerous International festivals.

Ada has performed throughout the US at venues such as Birdland, Iridium, The Garage (New York City), Hard Rock Cafe(Boston Ma), Elephant Room in (Austin Tx) to the latest Rochester Jazz Festival with her nine piece group Elephunk and the JVC Festival(New York City) to mention a few.

She has just finished the shooting of her film appearances in the movie ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ featuring Julia Roberts.

Ada Rovatti is currently signed with APRIA Records which will be releasing 2 CDs. The first with the Ada Rovatti Quartet featuring Randy Brecker, Mike Stern and Don Alias and the second CD with "Elephunk".

With a smile that will entrance you and a voice that helps your troubles disappear, Lynell’s vocal dexterity allows her to perform a limitless repertoire. Infusing her classical training with her gospel upbringing she approaches jazz as a storyteller. Growing up in small town west Texas Lynell grew her appreciation for all types of music and quickly realized music was a way to connect to the world.

Graduating from Louisiana State University’s music department Lynell is able to harness her voice as a true instrument and perform various genres of music with precision and validity. Lynell frequents the stage as a clinician, performer, arranger, bandleader and songwriter. As she has made her way through the music scene Lynell has shared the stage with headline jazz artists such as Herlin Riley, Roderick Paulin, Don Vappie, Mitchell Player and countless local artists and bands. Collaborating and creating lifelong experiences is a passion of Lynell’s, she has been a featured vocalist on various artist recordings. Lynell has performed with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra as the principle Soprano using the classical side of her voice and has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival presenting traditional jazz music. She has performed in several musicals throughout New Orleans and Baton Rouge receiving rave reviews.

Lynell's love for music carries over into all interactions of her life. She spends most of her days curating new musicians as the music instructor at a primary school. She has also created a program wich she shares in clinics nationally, "Made in America: Lyrically Speaking" in which she delves into jazz, blues and traditional American music from the vocalist perspective.

When Lynell takes the stage, she guides the listeners on a journey where “jazz collides with soul” allowing the simplest of melodies to entrance the listener. Lynell creates an environment where love is paramount, emphasizing the importance of self-worth and respect through her music. She speaks uplifting lyrics to those who have been broken hearted and stresses the importance of not letting the past dictate your future. Her new EP entitled "Loving Me" guides the listener through Lynell’s own transformation. The transition to finding her self-worth has lead Lynell on a journey that has also included health and fitness. As the creator of "Musicians Run", she sponsors weekly meet-ups for musicians to meet and exercise promoting health as a wealth.

Lynell sees each opportunity to share music with any audience as a chance to create memories and build the soundtrack of life. Whether she is leading the band or supporting other artist, she is thankful to have the opportunity to sketch new memories that last a lifetime.

In a world that often seems crowded with talented musicians, the light often shines on those artists who seek their personal voice at any cost. Cyrus Pace has spent the last 16 years doing just that. Through the fortunate contact with musicians who stressed the importance of self-expression and originality in music early in his career, Cyrus learned of the power of music as a tool of expression. The long and continuing search for meaning in music has lead to a realization for him that the guitar is not the instrument, the player is the instrument. He is as influenced by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown as he is by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Wes Montgomery. Cyrus seeks to serve the source that is independent of form, style, and classification.

Cyrus played his first professional gig at 15, toured extensively with the Navy Band, and received his Master's Degree in Performance from Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Rodney Jones, Jack Wilkins, Gary Dial, and Mike Abene. His previous ensembles include the Guitarmageddon Guitar Quartet he started with his 3 guitarist roommates in their Harlem Apartment. He is a guest lecturer at Roanoke College and Virginia Tech.
