The idea of collecting tracks off several of jazz legend Herbie Hancock's albums from the influential '60s Blue Note years through to his Grammy-winning 2007 album River is a nice idea that doesn't quite come together on Verve's Then and Now: The Definitive Herbie Hancock. Obviously designed to showcase the whole of Hancock's career post his 2007 Grammy win for River: The Joni Letters, Then and Now doesn't really give you the full picture. With only five tracks devoted to his '60s/'70s recordings (arguably his most essential and defining period), there's just not enough "then" here to really qualify this as a "definitive" collection. Not to mention that Then and Now basically ignores Hancock's '70s recordings, opting for merely an "edit" of "Chameleon" and the album version of "Watermelon Man," which comes out of chronological order near the end of the collection. As an interpreter, Nancy LaMott shunned extremes. Whatever clouds may have darkened the sky, she always sounded as if they couldn't possibly lead to a thunderstorm--only a gentle rain that would eventually becomes, well, shine. And so her tribute to lyricist Johnny Mercer typically avoids emotional extremes, exploring instead subtle in-betweens. The low-key version of "Moon River" that starts things off is indicative of this album's subdued mood. LaMott was well aware she wasn't a swinger, so her take on finger-snapping classics such as "Accentuate the Positive" (instead of the song's usual spelling "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate") and "That Old Black Magic" is sensitive rather than jazzily buoyant. Her minimalist approach reaps maximum rewards on "P.S. One of the three most influential pianists of his generation (along with Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea), McCoy Tyner is a true jazz giant. And more than 40 years after gaining widespread acclaim as the pianist in the classic John Coltrane Quartet, the 65-year-old Tyner shows no signs of slowing down. Like fellow Coltrane alum Elvin Jones, Tyner remains a vital force in modern jazz, leading a series of consistently excellent small groups and big bands, including the fiery new quartet featured on his latest release. Land of Giants, recorded after the quartet won raves at a 2002 London engagement, reunites Tyner with a fellow giant of forward-thinking '60s jazz, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, on a set of seven fresh Tyner originals an impressive mix of Latin numbers, modal burners and a Coltrane-esque blues plus three standards. 

And while the two veterans (along with the fine bass/drum combo of Charnett Moffett and Eric Harland) may not reach the epic heights of some of their earlier collaborations (like Hutcherson's 1965 Stick-Up! or the 1993 duet album, Manhattan Moods ), they prove themselves still kindred spirits and still among the most exciting, advanced improvisers on the scene. Tyner's huge, heavily percussive piano remains one of the most identifiable and inimitable sounds in jazz; but he also has an underrated lyrical side, revealed to great effect here on "For All We Know" and Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone." Hutcherson is Tyner's perfect foil, matching the leader's whirlwind keyboard forays with his own imposing, harmonically rich runs on the vibes.  McCoy Tyner’s been so good and so prolific for so long that his excellence seems a given. Recorded in 1968 but not issued until 1979, Spiral marks the first time that the official lineup of the Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land Quintet which also included pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Joe Chambers recorded together. 

(The first Hutcherson-Land album, Total Eclipse, featured Chick Corea on piano.) In one sense, it's understandable why this music stayed on the shelf for over a decade: it didn't fit the late-'60s zeitgeist. It had nothing to do with fusion, and it wasn't aggressively far-out like much of the avant-garde had gotten. Yet, on the other hand, it isn't so understandable the music was quite good, often excellent, and the quintet had a knack for making sophisticated, mainstream-leaning modal post-bop sound surprisingly soulful. Hutcherson, Land, Chambers, and Cowell all contribute compositions, making Spiral truly a group effort; Chambers in particular proves once again what an overlooked composer he was, but really, all the pieces are strong. 

Yet another unimpeachably solid Hutcherson session. [Note: The original LP version of Spiral contained "Jasper," an Andrew Hill-penned outtake from the 1965 Dialogue session that didn't really fit with all the Hutcherson-Land cuts. Topping off a wealth of full-band recordings, the various stars of Ellington's great outfit recorded many combo sides under their own names. And while not on the same sophisticated level of classic Ellingtonia, the late-'30s material cut by Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, and Rex Stewart is packed with tasty solo work and some of the finest examples of early small-group swing. These later examples from 1958-1959 feature Hodges backed by both Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on piano and such non-Duke luminaries as Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Jo Jones. Like its companion album, Back to Back, Side by Side has a loose, jam session feel, with all the soloists stretching out. Hodges is in top form throughout, while Edison and Webster man their spots just fine. Highlights include the sveltely swinging "Going Up" and Hodges' bluesy closer, "You Need to Rock." This "Jazz Hour" gives us nine extended solo piano performances of standards by Earl "Fatha" Hines near the end of his career and life, recorded somewhere in New York City in 1977. There is no documentation as to the origin or story behind these sessions, which sound to be in a studio, but there is a peculiar scratching noise heard frequently in the background during the entire program. Perhaps it is the sleeves or cuffs of Hines' shirt rubbing against either the piano, another facade, or a poorly placed microphone. More likely it could simply be an old, less well preserved, or warped spool of a reel-to-reel tape. 

Although the sound of his playing itself is clear and distinct, the background sonics, especially while listening on headphones, are to say the least, annoying.

Two Verve albums from Johnny Hodges both relatively obscure, and both pretty darn great! The Eleventh Hour is an overlooked gem from Johnny Hodges  a 60s session that hearkens back to the "with strings" Verve mode of the 50s but one that also updates the approach strongly, thanks to some well crafted arrangements by Oliver Nelson! Nelson's work in the jazz backings for soloist mode during the 60s was some of the best of the big band genre  and although his work here is much more in the mellow tone mode than his backings for players like Jimmy Smith and Lou Donaldson, Hodges is still getting top shelf treatment, some really wonderful washes of sound and color that show that his tone is still very much alive! A nice preface to the pair's classic set for Flying Dutchman and with tracks that include "Something to Live For", "Don't Blame Me", "Warm Valley", "The Eleventh Hour", "Guitar Amour", and "You Blew Out The Flame In My Heart". 

Sandy's Gone is a set that has the sweet alto sax of Johnny Hodges working with great arrangements from Claus Ogerman a mode that's a bit more groovy and 60s than some of Johnny's previous work in a setting that offers up a nice change for his sound! Claus is in fine form here swinging with the same style as his own instrumental records for RCA in the 60s echoes of his German roots, especially in the use of bass at the bottom which gives even some of the gentler tunes a nice kick we're not used to hearing in Johnny Hodges material. Johnny's got a sound that's soulful, yet sweet too almost pop, but still very strongly rooted in jazz on titles that include "Again", "Sandy's Gone", "Monkey Shack", "Scarlett O'Hara", "Candy's Theme", and "Follow Me". https://www.dustygroove.com/item/626604

Of all the “secret” singing stars of Hollywood -that is, those unheralded but talented vocalists who helped make so many actors appear to shine in movie musicals— one of the most versatile and vivacious was undoubtedly Annette Warren, an accomplished pianist and song stylist, born in Cleveland in 1922, who is best remembered today for her vocal performances of Bill and Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man in the 1951 film version of “Show Boat” with Ava Gardner.

This extensive compilation of her early work (1945-1957) includes all of her early Brick Fleagle and Phil Moore recordings, rare soundtrack and broadcast performances and several singles—including the infamous Starland sessions, historically interesting because of the jazz artists involved, but even more importantly because they brought Annette together for the first time with pianist Paul Smith, who would later become the most important figure in her life.

Also featured is Annette’s complete critically-acclaimed 1957 album, “There’s a Man in My Life!,” a jewel that has been newly polished in digital sound and showcases Annette Warren’s vocal artistry at its very best. “As a singer, Annette Warren can do no wrong,” said Steve Allen. “She has a full, rich, womanly tone which brings warmth and clarity to anything she sings.”

Originally born and raised in Canada, Lauren relocated to London, UK to pursue music on a new level just over 3 years ago. Daughter of an accomplished jazz trumpeter father and music teacher mother, it is no surprise that Lauren grew up to have such an aptitude for music. She ignored her gift for many years, certain that music would only be a hobby; taking voice lessons but was too afraid to perform. In 2004, on a whim, Lauren auditioned for her university big band, won the position and never looked back.

Traveling extensively around North America, Lauren has had some amazing opportunities to perform. Some highlights of her career include opening for Maynard Ferguson, performing with her quartet at the Corpus Christi Jazz Festival 2 years running, playing at the Victoria International Jazz Festival, sharing the stage with Bobby McFerrin at the Idaho Jazz Festival and singing in Handy Park in New Orleans. Since moving to London, highlights include playing at Elgar Room, Royal Albert Hall and being a finalist in the Riga Jazz Stage competition in Riga, Latvia.

In 2010, Lauren's quartet recorded their first demo with some unique arrangements of standard tunes like Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise and When You’re Smiling. Three of these recordings have received radio airplay around the world and Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise has had over 160,000 views on Youtube.

Lauren is quickly establishing herself on the London jazz scene and is breaking into the European scene as well. She performes regularly in Italy to sing with her Italian quartet fronted by Luca di Luzio on guitar and hosted by La Jazzlife Associazione.

The trademark groove that guitarist Chris Standring cultivated with recordings such as ‘Soul Express’ and Love & Paragraphs’ served to define him as a serious contributor to the evolution of contemporary jazz. Not only that, his innovative use of a string quartet for the albums ‘Blue Bolero’, ‘Electric Wonderland’ and ‘Don’t Talk, Dance!’ further enabled him to stand out from the crowd. Now, in the familiar company of Andre Berry, Rodney Lee and drummer Dave Karasony, he is back with his tenth studio project, the appropriately titled ‘Ten’.

This collection of ten original compositions opens with ‘Ready Steady Flow’ that (complete with splashes of Standring on vocoder) also happens to be the first track serviced to radio. Held down by Berry on bass, this edgy number is in the good company of ‘Like This Like That’ that is added to in no small measure by fine organ from Rodney Lee.

Elsewhere the easy paced ‘Snake Oil’ is given a nice twist by interjections of sax from Dino Soldo and, although Standring uses ‘Bossa Go Go’ to embark on an intoxicatingly rhythmic roll, it is with ‘Parisian Blue’ that he finds an understated but perfectly executed jazz vibe.

In terms of personal favorites the superbly turned down ‘Soul Vibration’ is a real delight yet right up there with it is ‘Piece Of Cake’ that sort of sneaks up to captivate the listener in the most subtle of ways. As the tempo slows yet further both ‘Carousel’ and ‘Never Too Late’ can aptly be described as beauty personified but it with ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ that Standring really pushes out the boundaries. Deep and moody, sensuous and jazzy, he comes up big on both guitar and keys while later, when Standring reprises the tune on acoustic guitar, he makes it sound brand new.

Make no mistake; this is a really top-notch CD that is sure to evolve into one of the standout releases of 2016.

Having graduated from a renowned performing arts high school in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, Yolanda Rabun (pronounced yo·lawn·duh | ray·bun) honed her singing and stage skills from a young age.

She is a fierce songstress and North Carolina based recording artist who also is versatile enough to handle all styles of music, although she favors jazz and soul. She says, “…really any music can lift your heart, warm your soul and awaken your senses; delivery is key.”

Rabun exploded onto the jazz scene first on Stanley Baird’s 2007 Traffic Jam hit single, “I Want 2 Love You,” and, in 2011, released her debut CD project, “So Real,” on which she co-wrote several songs, including the title song. In 2012, Rabun infused Soul, R&B, Gospel, Folk, Smooth and Traditional Jazz on her sophomore solo album, “Christmastime,” and followed in 2013 with the Adult Contemporary single, “Hold on To Your Dreams.”

A skilled singer with a natural storytelling instinct, Yolanda Rabun comes out the gate stunning her live audiences with her endless energy, commanding vocal power, and inventiveness. Her stage shows are engaging, full of passion, and include straight-ahead and contemporary Jazz, Blues, Folk, Pop, and even Gospel. And, Yolanda is never afraid to take risks.

This rich-voice chanteuse has opened for and sung with such iconic artists as Jennifer Holiday, Howard Hewitt, Ron Isley and the Isley Brothers, R&B singer KEM and the world-renowned iconic drummer, Sheila E.

Yolanda has also performed with the NC Opera, the Durham Symphony, and the Raleigh Symphony Free Spirits; she appeared on a number of TV and radio programs, achieved notoriety on regional theatre stages with magnificent reviews alongside Tony-award winning actors, and is an often requested motivational speaker.

An award-winning attorney who promised the legendary Isaac Hayes she would always sing after working with him on a special arrangement of “God Bless America” for Yolanda’s performance for the late President Ronald Reagan, Yolanda has always decidedly controlled the rights and path to her music. But, with fans around the world and musical admirers throwing hints after live shows at Atlanta’s Jazz Festival, D.C.’s acclaimed Blues Alley Jazz, and Hollywood’s Catalina Jazz, the idea for Yolanda’s third studio album was born in 2014.

For the new project, Yolanda effortlessly shifts between eras and genres but notably decided to take a modern day approach and launch a Kickstarter campaign where her fans eventually helped her raise more than $24,000 to produce the self-titled third studio album.

After failing to make it past the blind audition stage on BBC’s The Voice earlier this year, Bob Blakeley’s debut album, Performance, looks set to debut in the Top 20 this weekend. 

When his rendition of the Ella Fitzgerald classic, Cry Me A River, failed to win over The Voice judges, Tom Jones told 56 year-old warehouse worker, Bob Blakeley, “You should be a professional singer, that’s how good you are.” Well Tom, it looks like Bob did just that! After his surprisingly short lived stint on The Voice, Bob Blakeley was offered a record deal live on TV during an interview with BBC Breakfast. Record label boss, Mike Batt (credited with discovering chart topper Katie Melua, as well as writing the 1979 Official Singles Chart Number 1 classic, Bright Eyes), told BBC Breakfast, "I think the nation felt a sense of injustice [when the judges didn’t turn around] and I share that". Mike snapped up Bob, signing the singer to his label, Dramatico Entertainment, and went on to produce the singer’s debut album, Performance. According to Official Charts Company sales data, Performance is currently sitting at Number 20 on the Official Albums Chart and, if it maintains its sale momentum throughout the week, could well be on track to chart higher on Sunday! December of 1981 was a magical month for ECM, producing such treasures as Psalm and Opening Night. On Paths, Prints, however, Manfred Eicher raised the bar yet again in bringing together another of his unique dream teams. Jan Garbarek, Bill Frisell, Eberhard Weber, and Jon Christensen in the same studio? Engineering complexities aside, one need only have hit Record, taken a nap, and awoken to masterful results. Throughout this session, Garbarek’s sharply defined reveries prove the perfect fulcrum for Frisell’s broadly sweeping clock hands. Garbarek also exposes a softer side, as in the whispered edges of “The Path” and “Arc,” and in the seesawing contours of “Still.” The painterly movements of “Kite Dance,” on the other hand, foreground Weber’s globules of sound against the blush and heartwarming soloing of Frisell’s omnipresent guitar. 

Not too far behind are “Footprints,” which shows Christensen in an especially colorful mood, and “The Move,” which pours on Garbarek’s signature lilt like heavy cream. Certainly his most effective passages are also the most intimate: “Considering The Snail” and “To B.E.,” the latter a duet with Frisell, are concave, while their surroundings are convex. One can easily fall into the trap of painting ECM jazz as forlorn, breezy, and overwhelmingly lonesome. Pianist John Sheridan has worked hard to keep the spirit of swing alive, both in other bands and as a leader. On Swing Is Still the King, he furthers his effort with the support of singer Rebecca Kilgore and an ensemble of nine other players, including guitarist Eddie Erickson, cornetist Randy Reinhart, and saxophonist Dan Block. Sheridan has named this combo His Dream Band, and the players are given a chance to strut their stuff on the first three instrumentals, including a nice take of Irving Berlin's "Always" and a six-and-half-minute version of "You Turned the Tables on Me." Although the ensemble is fairly large, the arrangements are spare and flexible.

Kilgore joins the band on the fourth cut, "You're a Heavenly Thing," and her vocals play a large role on Swing Is Still the King, fronting the band on ten of the 15 tracks. Kilgore has good tone and works well within the classic medium of swing, and it's nice that she has chosen songs that are not overly familiar. She delivers a fine version of Mel Powell's "Shirley Steps Out," and is equally at home with ballads and uptempo numbers. On a distinctly grey day in January I got a call from AnR Lars ”Billy” Hansson. After about a minute of comparing the wheather in Stockholm and Skåne , and making sure our families were both well, he asked me: How about making a tribute album to Leonard Cohen? I´ve always been a big fan of Cohens´ music and had two months earlier seen one of the best concerts in my life Leonard Cohen in Göteborg. So, of course, my answer was yes. So, how do you make a tribute album? Well, off course you need to find the right artist for the right song. Next step is to make it sound like one album. How do you achieve that? I had been thinking about this and also trying to find new ways to get presence and vibrance in recordings and I had an idea: 

One place, one time and one band.No safety net. The different artists would come one after another and sing their song. Lars Hansson liked the idea and we started to discuss singers and songs, studios and engineers, and budgets... Eventually we agreed on a list of very fine Swedish and Norwegian artists and to our joy almost everyone were happy to come. Further more we settled for the 17-18 of August at Studio 4, Radiohuset, Stockholm. Lars and I continued to work on the planning and logistics and I contacted all the artists to discuss key, tempo,arrangement and vibe. The C-day finally came. The plan was to record 19 songs in two days. This takes a lot of concentration from a lot of people. Singers, musicians, engineers. It also takes a lot of luck: One late airplane, two hours of computer problems and one artist not happy with the microphone could jeopardise the whole album. I can honestly say I´ve never been so tired, or musically happy, as when we finished the last song 9.30 pm on the 18th. Everybody involved had done their utmost to make this album come alive and the artists all brought their musicality, their personal interpretation, their concentration.
