Jazz singer performed with father Cab Calloway for 20 years before going on to perform and record on her own. A Santa Fe resident since 1991, the vivacious vocalist sang with her father's Hi-De-Ho Orchestra for two decades until his death in 1995. She then became a bandleader in her own right, putting together a new version of the band. In 2001, she took the group on a 55-city tour.

"The revised Hi-De-Ho Orchestra was made up of musicians she collected," Santa Fe businessman Tom Berkes. He and singer Madi Sato owned the Espiritu Canyon Road club where Calloway staged a performance series in 1999. Just like they did with the Count Basie Orchestra, you'd hire good musicians who were willing to travel," Berkes said, "so most of the people in Chris' band were from New York and California."

She had been battling breast cancer since 1987. Chris Calloway died in 2008.

Since the early '70s, Asleep at the Wheel have been the most important force in keeping the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Wheel have earned enthusiastic critical praise throughout their lengthy career; they have not only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music, but have also been able to update the music, keeping it a living, breathing art form. Typically featuring eight to 11 musicians, the group has gone through myriad personnel changes (at last count, over 80 members had passed through their ranks), but 6'7" frontman Ray Benson has held it together for four decades, keeping Asleep at the Wheel a viable recording and touring concern and maintaining their devotion to classic-style Western swing. ~Steve Huey

This CD is a straight reissue of the Gerry Mulligan LP La Menace, the soundtrack to the film of the same name. He's joined by nine other musicians (though not all at the same time), including keyboardists Dave Grusin, Pete Levin, Derek Smith, Edward Walsh, and Tom Fay; drummers Bobby Rosengarden and Michael DiPasqua; and bassists Jack Six and Jay Leonhart. Mulligan also overdubs soprano sax, clarinet, and keyboards into the mix, which of course prominently features the leader on baritone sax. The music has a more contemporary feeling than his typical recordings because of the sometimes heavy use of synthesizers, and while the music is enjoyable, none of the compositions are particularly memorable. At times Mulligan's baritone sax sounds as if it has gone through some added processing. Influenced by Brazilian pop and the music of her native Argentina, Gabriela Anders spent much time in America soaking up jazz and R&B sensibilities, all of which inform her singing. The daughter of a jazz saxophone player, Anders studied classical guitar while a child but moved to piano study at a Buenos Aires conservatory. She spent much time in New York as well, soaking up the music of tenor specialists John Coltrane, Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon. She also studied with Don Sebesky and began singing with Grover Washington, Jr. and Tito Puente while going to college. A brief time in Japan resulted in her first album, 1996's Fantasia (recorded as Beleza), though she had returned to New York by 1997. Ghost Writer wasn't Garland Jeffreys' first album, but it was the first one where his signature lyrical voice made itself properly heard on vinyl, and where he seemed to fully embrace the stylistic eclecticism that would become one of the hallmarks of his work. On Ghost Writer, Jeffreys spins ten vivid tales of life on the New York streets, ranging from the cool literary philosophizing of the title cut to the teenage rage of "Wild in the Streets," encompassing the slinky reggae of "I May Not Be Your Kind," the sinewy Latin grooves of "Spanish Town," the cocky rock & roll of "Rough & Ready," the graceful sweet soul of "New York Skyline," and the edgy, urgent menace of "Lift Me Up." What holds it all together is Jeffreys' songwriting, keenly intelligent without seeming academic and reveling in the power of the word; here Jeffreys makes much of his multicultural background, which seems a natural reflection of the city that provides a backdrop for the stories, and Ghost Writer's musical shape shifting makes these songs sound like they're leaping from borough to borough without losing the "you talkin' to me?" big city swagger that informs them all. And Jeffreys can sing about the dilemma of race in an international city, political unrest in another land, unrequited love, the movies that give life to his dreams, and the books that nourish his soul while sounding wise, fully engaged, and like the coolest guy on the block all at once, with a voice that's sweet, sharp, and commanding. The live NAIMA, recorded at Boomer's, is representative of a New York mid-'70s jazz-club gig. Cedar Walton's band mixes originals with cover tunes, conveying a vibe of bright harshness combined with propulsive NY energy. They're slightly hyper and on top of the beat.

The set opens with the bluesy Walton original "Holy Land." Walton pulls back on the beat during his solo. It's the most interesting, hard-swinging playing on the album, slightly disjointed and choppy. The influences of Errol Garner and Bill Evans emerge on Bacharach's "This Guy's in Love With You." Walton aims for clarity of line, fighting against a piano miked a little brightly. Sam Jones' driving bass is up front in the mix. Throughout, Cedar plays blues lines interwoven with ornate bop. But he brings pure melodicism to John Coltrane's "Naima." Here the band swings like a refreshing Brooklyn breeze. Cedar is at his sweetly singing best on the trio arrangement of the Cahn/Van Heusen tune "All the Way." Clifford Jordan's playing throughout is warm and almost woodsy, while Cedar and Jones' brightness offsets the mellow tonal quality of Louis Hayes' drumming. ~AMG

Since 1979 Cheryl Bentyne has been part of the Grammy-winning, iconic vocal quartet, "The Manhattan Transfer," recording such mega-hits as "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," "Birdland," "Boy From New York City," "Route 66," and "Sassy." She has also been very busy with her solo career, having produced such great CDs as Something Cool, Talk of the Town, Moonlight Serenade, Waltz for Debby, and the Cole Porter Songbook. Here we present a great track each from two of her most recent releases, The Gershwin Songbook and Blissongs, a multi-voice healing journey through the seven chakras.

Ms. Bentyne has sung some of the most memorable solos in the Transfer's repertoire: "Good-bye Love," Benny Goodman's solo on "Down South Camp Meeting" (both on the 1983 release, Bodies and Souls) and "Meet Benny Bailey" (on their landmark 1985 recording, Vocalese). She won a Grammy (which she shares with Bobby McFerrin) for her arrangement of "Another Night In Tunisia" (also on Vocalese). Her hot performance in the video and single release "So You Say" (from Brasil, 1987) helped broaden the Transfer's audience via frequent appearances on BET. She also wrote and co-wrote tracks for the Transfer's 1992 release, The Offbeat of Avenues, including the title track and the Grammy winning "Sassy."

Twenty-four albums and many Grammy Awards later, the group is still going strong, with each of the members also performing in solo careers as well. In 1988, Cheryl appeared on bassist Rob Wasserman's highly acclaimed Duets album. Four years later, she released her solo debut album, Something Cool, for Columbia/Sony Records. Cheryl explains: "The original concept was to do a tribute to the cool singers of the 1950's, particularly June Christy. Producers Mark Isham and Corey Allen did such an incredible job on the arrangements that the songs sound strikingly modern and beautiful. These arrangements have brought out a new dimension to my singing. It's like nothing I've ever heard." Cheryl appears on the soundtrack to the 1990 film Dick Tracy, on "Back in Business," a song she performed with Lorraine Feather and fellow Transfer member Janis Siegel. She also collaborated with trumpeter/composer Mark Isham in the soundtrack to the 1991 Alan Rudolph film, Mortal Thoughts. In 2000, she recorded an original cast album of her new musical revue based the music and wit of Cole Porter. Dreaming Of Mister Porter has played to sold-out audiences and received rave reviews in Boston and Seattle.

Cheryl has released seven CDs for King Records in Japan: The first, The Talk Of The Town, is an album of classics from the "Great American Songbook," recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz: Kenny Barron, Chuck Mangione, John Patitucci, Lewis Nash, Don Alias, David "Fathead" Newman, and the tenor and bass voices from Take 6, Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea. The Lights Still Burn is an album of romantic ballads. Moonlight Serenade features Cheryl leading a vocal group comprised of some of the best singers in the business: Mark Kibble from Take 6, Roger Treece from Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra, and jazz great Kevin Mahogany. In Waltz for Debby, Cheryl meets up again with Kenny Barron, this time with the addition of the great bassist Ray Drummond. Songs Of Our Time is an album of pop tunes from the 1960s–90s, approached from a jazz point of view. The Cole Porter Songbook rekindles her love affair with Porter's music, and her latest CD, The Gershwin Songbook (2010), features fourteen classic Gershwin standards, with a band that will burn the house down!

In a completely different direction, in 2010 Cherly co-wrote and recorded with Tom McCauley Blissongs Volume One, a soothing, healing journey of the seven chakras. As her busy schedule allows, Cheryl helps the next generation of professional vocalists get started. She taught at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and routinely holds master classes at universities and music schools around the US. As a member of the board of governors for The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS,) Cheryl worked hard to promote educational programs — most notably through the "Grammy In The Schools" program. A truly wonderful result of her work at NARAS is the strength of the vocal department at the Hamilton Musical Academy in Los Angeles, which she helped to establish. In recognition of their many achievements, Cheryl and her partners in The Manhattan Transfer received honorary doctorate degrees from the Berklee College of Music. The name of Baltimore vibraphonist Warren Wolf may not be too well known, but the sidemen he has called on for his third release on well-funded US indy label Mack Avenue should ensure he doesn’t remain so for much longer. Produced by Wolf’s mentor and regular employer, bassist Christian McBride, Convergence features a dream team band including pianist Brad Mehldau and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, with guitarist John Scofield guesting on two tracks. A really groovy little vocal jazz record – cut by an American singer on the London scene of the late 60s – working here with tight backing from the Laurie Holloway Quartet! Bryony James has this way of going deep with her range that's a bit like Morgana King, but she's also a bit less heavy, too – and swings easily without getting lost in her trills – bringing a lightness to the record that's a great match for the cool arrangements provided by Holloway – whose group also includes a nice percussionist. Many tunes are familiar, but they're given very groovy treatments here – and tracks include "Our Day Will Come", "Feeling Good", "Summertime", "Goin Out Of My Head", "How Insensitive", "Come Back To Me", and "Look Of Love". A considerable rarity in its original vinyl form, it's reissued here for the first time.

The organist/guitarist combination was popularized by the legendary Jimmy Smith in 1957. Grant Green and Larry Young took it a step further in 1964, but Smith and Wes Montgomery on their 1966 "Dynamic Duo," album, arguably defined the format. Smith also catapulted the jazz organ trio into another dimension, and set the standard for that ensemble configuration; one of the most difficult, as it requires immense technical skills. Little Charlie and Organ Grinder Swing, is comprised of Little Charlie Baty on guitar, Lorenzo Farrell on Hammond organ, and drummer J. Hansen. Skronky Tonk, is a prodigious set of swing, blues, and gypsy jazz, performed in an genuine vintage organ trio setting.

Little Charlie Baty is best known as leader of The Nightcats, a solid blues band with an extended discography on Alligator records dating back to 1987. He recently recorded and toured with the Golden State Lone Star Blues Revue, to high acclaim. This organ trio venture is a lifelong personal ambition, which he finally realized. Farrell and Hansen are his former Nightcats bandmates, and so the personal and musical chemistry is present. What might appear as a radical departure for these three, upon further analysis, is just a deeper exploration to the core of American music.

The title track determines the direction of the record, and is an indicator that Baty and company have done their homework in the soul/jazz idiom. This is one of three originals, the swinging "Gerontology," and "Cobalt Blues," being the others. Some of the repertoire is composed of standards as "How High The Moon," "Pennies From Heaven," and "Misty," all given a gentle nudge into a jazzier atmosphere.

The jazz manouche of Django Reinhardt is evident on his "Nuages," and "Django," penned by John Lewis of Modern Jazz Quartet fame. Charlie Christian is credited as the first jazz guitarist, and his "Swing To Bop," is rejuvenated with ambitious vigor. The Brazilian tinge is covered on "Receita de Samba," and "Um a Zero," whereas "Broadway," drifts into the Caribbean; displaying versatility and ability to syncopate. They wrap it up with the Benny Goodman classic "Flyin' Home," a good natured jaunt into big band territory, reinvented within the organ trio format. Throughout the record, Baty as guitarist, and Farrell in his role of organist, do a magnificent job playing off of each other with disciplined anticipation. Keeping the arrangements lean, with no rushing or clutter, makes for ease of enjoyment.

Since these musicians are based out of California, Greaseland Studios in San Jose was chosen for recording the sessions; the sound being exemplary, as the clarity of the instruments shines through. Little Charlie elected to play this music as a matter of choice and taste; serving as an homage to those musicians who inspired and challenged his trajectory, his bandmates rising to the occasion. The organ trio is a tough turf to travel, and these guys do it in style. ~James Nadal

Growing up in Harlem and Brooklyn, Eric Frazier eventually earned a Doctorate from Columbia University. Frazier emerged onto the New York music scene after transitioning from a career as a school Principal and Education Executive to follow his passion for music and storytelling. Initially, immersing himself in playing Conga Drum, Djembe Drum and African Dance, he has expanded his artistic endeavors to singing, trap drums, and inspired by his brother Gary Ellis Frazier, who was formerly with The Alvin Ailey Dance Company, he has expanded to tap dance. Eric Frazier’s recordings are characterized by a range of styles from Jazz, Swing, BeBop, Salsa, R&B, Calypso, Blues, Broadway, Reggae, Reggaeton, World Music and Afro beat.

Over the past decade, Frazier has been very active on the New York jazz scene, and built an impressive list of credits including performances or recordings with Reggie Workman, Robin Kenyatta, Carlos Garnett, Bill Saxton, Stanley Banks and Danny Mixon, Pharaoh Sanders, Jack McDuff and more. His own his recordings have featured notable jazz artists including Jeremy Pelt, Anthony Wonsey, Wayne Escoffery and Maurice Brown. He has performed at leading jazz clubs and venues in New York including the Rainbow Room, Madison Square Garden Theater, Iridium Jazz Club, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Birdland, and The Apollo Theater among others, and has also led his group at noteworthy jazz venues and festivals throughout the United States. In addition to appearances performing on an array of music and jazz TV shows, including spots on BET Jazz Discovery and Bet On Jazz Cable TV shows, Eric Frazier is the co-host of WLIU Jazz radio 88.1 FM, and the creator of the Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival, at which he will appear from 3 to 7PM, Saturday, July 23, 2016 & October 10, 2016. One of the finest jazz musicians born in Switzerland, altoist George Robert has long considered his main influences to be Charlie Parker and Phil Woods. He started on piano when he was eight, and clarinet at ten, playing with a family band that included his four brothers. Robert switched permanently to alto as a teenager. In 1980, he moved to the United States to study at Berklee, settling in New York in 1985. Robert recorded his first album that year (for his GPR label), and in 1987, formed a quintet that he co-led with trumpeter Tom Harrell on and off through 1992. George Robert, who has toured with Clark Terry, has recorded many albums as a leader for Contemporary, TCB, Mons, and Jazz Focus. ~by Scott Yanow

The well-rounded CD has individual features for Redman ("Angel Eyes"), Payton ("Body and Soul") and Mraz ("My Romance"), along with the leader (the unaccompanied drum solo "Ding-A-Ling-A-Ling"), and has consistently inspired playing from all of the musicians.
