Randy Lyght is a jazz and pop singer/songwriter and has been involved in the Canadian music and entertainment industry for decades.

For the last five years Randy has successfully performed and recorded three albums (Just In Time, A Return To Romance and Happy Holidays) that were all produced by the award-winning producer Rick Hutt at Cedartree Recording Studio. Two of these albums cover songs from the American Songbook. With Randy’s creation of his original songs, he has focused on breathing new life into the same genre of music.

Growing up in a household that appreciated all flavours of music, Randy was introduced to country as well as big band music. At the young age of 15, Randy started in his hometown of Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario, singing the cover songs of the popular rock bands of the time because that was the accepted music. Soon, Randy started to admire the works of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and others even if it wasn’t the cool music to listen to at the time.

In the mid-70’s Randy was asked to join a world tour for 18 months with The World Renowned Platters. His talent and innate musicality was enriched, singing under the direction of very talented performers.

Returning home, Randy moved to Vancouver BC and continued to sing at countless live engagements and recorded commissioned songs and radio jingles until the mid 80’s.

After meeting his soul mate and having children, Randy chose to put his dream on hold and provide a stable lifestyle for his family. A part of his heart though was always with his music.

Now after returning to pursue his passion of music in 2011, Randy has been entertaining audiences with his now mature and textured vocals. When he performs he exudes a kind of showmanship, class and charisma from years gone by.

Randy is well known for his engaging shows of personality on stage, which applauds audiences every time. Randy makes every show count and be memorable.

On the exquisite Walk Against Wind bassist Linda May Han Oh showcases her unique compositional style that rivals, artistically, her mastery over her instrument and her improvisational prowess. These 11 originals express various motifs reflecting Oh's diverse influences yet a delightfully dark poetry imbues all of them, giving the album its thematic unity.

The intensely cinematic "Speech Impediment," for instance, has a languid melody and shimmering refrains. Oh's Lilting, wordless vocals echo saxophonist Ben Wendel wistful lines. As the tempo picks up the tune becomes crisper and more hypnotic. Wendel and guitarist Matthew Stevens exchange thrillingly dissonant lines over drummer Justin Brown's thunderous beats and Oh's thumping bass. Brown's dynamic solo ushers in the concluding head.

Brown opens the atmospheric "Ikan Bilis" with his haunting drumming that endows the music with a primal spirituality. Pianist Fabian Almazan makes a guest appearance as he and the other band members contribute their respective introspective musings. The individual instrumental voices coalesce into a mystical and memorable ensemble performance that has an undercurrent of subtle funky rhythms. Almazan's chiming keys and Stevens' resonant notes mix in with Oh and Brown's percolating cadence to buoy Wendel's warmly wailing tenor.

Another guest, Korean traditional percussionist Minji Park, adds an Eastern touch to the expectant "Mantis" with her exotic janggu & kkwaenggwari. Oh takes center stage with complex and lyrical extemporization that is intriguingly crepuscular. Wendel's yearning, fiery phrases thrillingly contrast with the contemplative serenity of the rest of the track.

The pensive and dramatic "Deepsea Dancers" demonstrates Western Classical hints especially in the melodic fragments that are its building blocks. Stevens and Wendel alternate eloquent spontaneous monologues that are sometimes stimulatingly angular and at others elegantly fluid. Oh's muscular reverberations and Brown's soft thuds and brushing add an element of tension to the overall mood.

Walking Against Wind is a mature work that perfectly balances different musical elements. The prewritten and the spontaneously created seamlessly meld and miscellaneous inspirations fuse into a singular and sublime whole. It is Oh's best release to date and, hopefully, a sign of what is to come next.

This Charles Brown session from early 1992 finds the singer sounding just as natural as he did in the early '50s. Blues and Other Love Songs was originally released on Muse records and is available as a budget title from the excellent reissue label 32 Jazz. Brown is in a typically soulful mood, crooning like a gritty modern day Nat "King" Cole. Backing up the piano and vocals of Brown are soul-groove saxophonist Houston Person, whose smokey tenor chops were an excellent match for Brown's blues. Danny Caron on guitar, Ruth Davies on bass, and Gaylord Birch round out the rhythm section. These ten tracks consist of five originals and five covers featuring a brief version of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight," showing off Brown's ability to play straight jazz. Person is also heard with Brown on the 32 jazz reissue Lost and Found, which combines the albums Sweet Slumber and Wildflower on one disc. ~Al Campbell

Nancy Wilson was one of the biggest stars of the 1960s; until the Beatles came along, she was the biggest-selling artist on the Capitol Records roster. The title track of the singles collection How Glad I Am was Wilson's biggest hit of the era and won a Grammy in 1964. While "How Glad I Am" is a tart, country-flavored soul number, the album also features Wilson doing vocal pop, jazz-blues (the juicy, Hammond B-3-filled "West Coast Blues" is the set's best number), R&B, and bossa nova. The title tune remains a favorite of the British Northern soul scene but most of these numbers haven't endured the way that Wilson's album cuts from the same period have. Though this album is long out of print, almost all of the songs on it can be found on various Nancy Wilson CD collections. Joe Pass achieved extraordinary balance in his career. Because he remained grounded in bop and swing, his guitar work was more conservative than many fusion and post-bop players, but his solo guitar work also ventured into unexplored territory, combining the single-note dexterity of Charlie Christian with the block chords of Carl Kress. Meditation: Solo Guitar offers a fresh release from Pass, recorded live at Yoshi's in 1992, two years before his death. As Ken Dryden points out in the liner notes, the release isn't just "a case of posthumously cleaning out the vaults." Like the critically acclaimed Virtuoso series, Meditation exhibits a number of intricate interpretations of classic pieces by one man and his guitar. The title also captures the intimacy of Pass' work on "Everything Happens to Me" and "Mood Indigo." He seems so absorbed in his work, so alone, that it comes as a shock when the audience applauds at the end of each piece. Pass also covers Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me," Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean?," and the Gershwin brothers' "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Pass' technique manages to follow his own muse, changing tempos at will without ever losing the rhythm of the tune. The second album from the Kevin Hays New Day Trio does and doesn't follow in its predecessor's footsteps. On one hand you can argue that it's completely different, as Hays doesn't sing on this one and there are no guests to speak of here; on the other, you can certainly opine that the overt lyricism in this music, forged through Hays' fingers and enhanced by the extremely interactive and empathetic team of bassist Rob Jost and drummer Greg Joseph, is a clear link to New Day (Sunnyside, 2015). In truth, both thought camps are probably right. Hays has managed to tinker with the fine balance of musical distinctiveness and directional mutability in his work for more than two decades, so why should things be any different with this group? Better to simply enjoy this to-die-for music than split hairs over album-to-album connectivity.  North's name was born through historical and personal ties for Hays, referencing everything from Harlem's musical riches to the pianist's former upstate New York home/sanctuary to a metaphorical ideal. It's an album built on a specific platform of thought, but it's not a work that fixes the compass on a single point. In fact, the variety is quite staggering when you start to think about it: A twisted and spiked take on Charlie Parker's "Scrapple From The Apple" sits beside a sorrowful-turned-scintillating "Elegia"; a Chilean folk pastoral, painted freely by Hays' piano and Jost's ukulele, serves as a prelude to an excitable 5/4 romp on "Violetta"; staid socializing leads toward waltzing wonders through classical borrowings on "Schumann's Chamisso"; and funky feelings rule the day on "Sweet Caroline" a Hays original, not the Neil Diamond party warhorse. All of that sits within the incredibly gratifying first half of the album.  The five tracks that follow continue to speak to Hays' creativity, both as a composer, interpreter, and conceptualist. Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep" points both to its deep folk-blues spirit and sunnier aspirations, the swinging "All Things Are" emerges from the roots of the eternal "All The Things You Are" and grows in different directions, the title track is both a reflection and a respite, and "I'll Remember April" bounces along on a 6/8 carriage and gets a slightly darker and more intriguing coat of harmonic paint than what's customarily used. Then album's end cites day's beginning on the ever-evolving yet melodically moored "Morning." Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has always captured the essence of straight-ahead jazz at its best. He provides a groove over which his bands improvise in the classic tradition. Echoes of Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson abound. From this modern jazz historical foundation, however, he's always felt free to explore. With his latest release, Lupri retains the traditional bebop spirit that has given us immeasurable pleasure for more than half a century, but brings it all to us from the perspective of original compositions. From eerie and dramatic romps to free and playful cavorts in the park, his suite-like images allow the music to grow. The mainstream has indeed become modern, as the vibraphonist and his stellar ensemble find new ways to express their ideas. Electronic trumpet echoes and wide guitar reverberations fit in nicely between pages and pages of familiar-sounding soundscapes. The added features are used sparingly, and serve to punctuate the ensemble's original thematic material.  The vibraphone's timbre blends well with just about any instrumental combination. Here, Mark Turner, Nate Radley and Cuong Vu ensure that Lupri's instrumental voice fits the ensemble sound like a hand in a glove. Their subdued tones all blend together as one emotional vote for quality in the sounds that we experience every day. Vu's mellow trumpet, Turner's robust saxophone, and Radley's fluid guitar fit well with Lupri's rain shower of tonal colorations. Bob Mover's first session as a leader matches his alto and soprano with trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Mike Nock, guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist George Mraz, drummer Jeff Pappez and singer Jay Clayton on four lengthy performances: three Mover originals and "Darn That Dream." The use of Clayton's voice as a part of the ensembles gives the band an unusual sound. Mover sounded pretty strong, if a bit derivative at this point (he was 24), but Harrell generally takes solo honors. Some jazz purists would say that Wayne Shorter went downhill in the 1970s, when he passionately embraced electric jazz-fusion and co-led the innovative Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. But remember: Those are the same people who also claim that Miles Davis' stunning Bitches Brew has no value, and that Chick Corea's visionary Return to Forever was a complete waste -- so it's hard to take their opinions seriously. The fact is that the '70s were a highly productive time for Shorter, and it wasn't until the '80s that the tenor and soprano saxophonist really declined creatively. One of Shorter's best-selling albums from the '70s was Native Dancer, a Brazilian-oriented jazz-fusion masterpiece that boasts Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, and employs such Brazilian talent as singer Milton Nascimento (a superstar in Brazil) and percussionist Airto Moreira.
