Morgan was born Florence Catherine Currier in Newton, Massachusetts on May 3, 1924, one of five children born to musicians Olga (Brandenburg) and Bertram Currier. When she was four years old, the Currier family moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. At five she began vocal lessons while continuing piano lessons. During the summers, she took on child roles and appeared in theater productions at the Kennebunkport Playhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine, which her brother had founded. In 1941, she was listed as the Treasurer of the Kennebunkport Playhouse. While attending grade school, Morgan actively engaged in singing and competing against other students throughout Florida and the Southeast. After graduating from Seabreeze High School, she and her multiple musical talents were promptly accepted into New York's prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Intending to become an opera singer, she studied opera by day and performed whenever possible.

Morgan sang popular songs in nightclubs and small restaurants, and at bar mitzvahs and other private parties, to help pay her tuition expenses at Juilliard. Eventually she was hired as a singer at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan with the house second band for $25 a week, six nights a week. While she was still at Juilliard (1944), orchestra leader Art Mooney heard her perform and hired her. Mooney changed her name to Jane Morgan by taking the first name of one of his vocalists, Janie Ford, and the last name of another, Marian Morgan

Bass – Ares Tavolazzi; Drums – Walter Paoli; Piano – Stefano Bollani. Recorded at House Recording Studio in Rome On July 7 and 8 , 2002.

Jazz pianist Stefano Bollani was born in Milan, Italy, on December 5, 1972. He began playing piano as a child in order to accompany his singing, but soon concentrated solely on the instrument, enrolling in a conservatory in Florence when he was 11. There, he studied both jazz and pop music, and after graduating in 1993, added his keyboard skills to albums for many of Italy's top pop stars, including Laura Pausini, Irene Grandi, and Jovanotti. When working with the latter in 1996 he met avant-garde jazz trumpeter Enrico Rava, who invited the young pianist to play with him in Paris, an opportunity Bollani quickly accepted.

He then began to release more jazz albums, first with his trio (completed by bassist Ares Tavolazzi and drummer Walter Paoli) but also as a solo artist (like on 2003's Småt Småt and 2006's Piano Solo) as well as with other trios (2002's Fleurs Bleues drew from the talents of bassist Scott Colley and drummer Clarence Penn, while 2005's Gleda: Songs from Scandinavia used his trio with bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund) and even a quintet (2006's I Visionari). Bollani has also appeared on stages at the Umbria and Montreal Jazz Festivals, among others, and has performed with musicians like Gato Barbieri, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Paolo Fresu, and Phil Woods.

The pianist's ECM debut as a leader, Piano Solo, was issued in 2007. That same year he played on Tati with drummer Paul Motian in a Rava-led trio, and in duet with the trumpeter on The Third Man. In 2008 Bollani shifted gears and led two large-group ensembles for Verve. The first was entitled Carioca, while the second was simply called Big Band! The following year, he and the trio delivered Stone in the Water for ECM. In 2010 Bollani appeared as a soloist with conductor Ricardo Chailly and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchester in an all-Gershwin program for Decca (Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Catfish Row; Concerto in F), released in Europe that year and globally in 2011. Orvieto, his duet recording with Chick Corea, appeared on ECM in 2011 as well.

The pianist issued a slew of records in 2012 and 2013 in various settings, including two more duet offerings: a self-titled album with Italian pop singer Irene Grandi and O Que Será, a collection with Brazilian bandolim (a ten-string mandolin) player Hamilton de Holanda. Ever ambitious, Bollani reconvened his trio and enlisted guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Mark Turner as guests in a diverse program of original material arranged for various groupings from quintet to duo. Joy in Spite of Everything was issued in the late summer of 2014 on ECM, followed by Arrivano Gli Alieni on Universal in 2015. The following year, he paid homage to the Italian city of Naples with Napoli Trip. ~bio by Marisa Brown

This is a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging record by Buddy DeFranco and his well-selected and balanced ensemble. There is Buddy's fabulous clarinet playing, yes - lots of it - but the overall feel is one of a great ensemble running through some old standards and sounding at once fresh and yet, well, timeless. It would be impossible for me to say what year this was released if I did not follow Mr. DeFranco's work and have just downloaded this recording - it could easily be from the 1960's. For me, the highlights are All My Life, Joy Spring, For Keeps... Buddy's tone is amazing and his facility completely intact after all these years. As a clarinet player, it's hard not to give 5 stars (I wanted 4.5). It's not a groundbreaking record, or a "classic", but just a solid recording by jazz artists of very high caliber, enjoying their art and putting down some solid, beautiful music. If you like clarinet at all, or follow Buddy's music, you cannot go wrong with this gem of a recording. ~Michael H. Ricereto

This LP has the debut of drummer Marty Morell with Bill Evans and bassist Eddie Gomez, and this particular trio would retain the same personnel for six productive years. Actually, this is a quartet set with guest flutist Jeremy Steig, whose playing recalls Herbie Mann's recording (Nirvana) with Evans back in the early '60s. Both flutists were always open to the influences of pop and rock, although in both of their collaborations with Evans, the music is very much on the pianist's turf. With the exception of Evans' "Time Out for Chris" and the "Spartacus Love Theme," the songs performed on this date would fit securely in the Miles Davis repertoire of the late '50s. Steig is in particularly fine form on the program which includes tunes such as "Straight No Chaser," "Autumn Leaves," and "So What." ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/whats-new-mw0000188122

Flute virtuoso Hubert Laws has always occupied his own artistic turf, whether interpreting works by Mozart, Stravinsky, Dvorák, Debussy, Satie, Fauré, and J.S. Bach or improvising with immaculate ease through the modern jazz compositions of Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane. He has also demonstrated a well-grounded attitude toward the mainstream pop repertoire, which he handles with comparable mastery. Bridge Over Troubled Water, as one might guess, is an entire album of hit tunes by Paul Simon. Each melody is executed with the relaxed precision that has always characterized much of this artist's work. The flutist is backed by pianist John Beasley, bassist Stanley Gilbert, drummer Ralph Penland, and the West L.A. Strings under the direction of Stanley Gilbert. The familiarity of the playlist makes this an ideal choice for weddings and family gatherings, with the friendly friction generated during "Cecilia" and "I Am a Rock" bringing up welcome intimations of honest jazz. ~ arwult arwulf  https://www.allmusic.com/album/bridge-over-troubled-water-mw0000535453

A vanity project that evades any rational explanation, as its flights of fancy are so far removed from its creator’s home turf, Music Is Better Than Words is a traditional big-band album from Seth MacFarlane, the self-satisfied wise-ass behind Family Guy. Demonstrating precisely the same amount of imagination that led him to creating no less than three permutations of Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, MacFarlane plays it straight throughout Music Is Better Than Words, hiring American Dad composer Joel McNeely to create approximations of Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, and Billy May's arrangements for Frank Sinatra's deathless, mid-century records for Capitol. These classic concept albums are clearly the blueprint for Music Is Better Than Words, which was, after all, recorded at Capitol Records' legendary studio with MacFarlane singing into the very same microphone Sinatra used all those years ago, and there is a bit of a concept to this 2011 LP, too, with the cartoonist selecting songs never recorded by any member of the Rat Pack along with a couple recent tunes like “She’s Wonderful Too,” which McNeely originally wrote for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles for his tribute to that ring-a-ding-ding swing. MacFarlane and McNeely don’t attempt to ape the pizzazz of Frank’s Reprise years, nor do they spend much time with May’s snazzy snap, they stick with Riddle and Jenkins, keeping things sentimental and lush even when the words crackle with wit. Then again, MacFarlane is so concerned about inhabiting Sinatra’s silken suits he doesn’t really care about the meaning of the songs; all that matters is sounding like Ol' Blue Eyes, which MacFarlane does about as well as any number of hotel lounge singers this world over. Sure, it’s a surprise that he can carry a tune, but it’s no surprise that MacFarlane, who came to fame and fortune by telling obvious jokes so slowly a dog could understand, considers his competence as proof of his excellence, his smugness bearing no swagger, his self-satisfaction undercutting his otherwise perfectly pleasant surroundings. ~ Tomas Erlewine https://www.allmusic.com/album/music-is-better-than-words-mw0002154821

Second-generation bop pianist Barry Harris puts the spotlight on the songs in this 1960 solo excursion. Split between standards and originals, the set hears the 31-year-old pianist evoking Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and occasional hints of Fats Waller in performances that defy easy classification as bop, swing, or mainstream. Essentially, it's Harris working within the songs, opening up new pathways in and around the melodic and harmonic structures. The opening track, "Londonderry Air" (aka "Danny Boy"), provides a clue to Harris' method. He plays the song straight, but subtly brings out the simple, fresh, and elegant possibilities in the traditional folk melody.

The same creative process is worked out on the other tracks, which allude to Harris' key influences, but also make clear his own contributionan appealingly updated, modernistic approach to the jazz piano tradition. Among the standards, "Body and Soul" is given a thoughtful, illuminating reading. "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" is handled with a natural, sophisticated ease. The centerpieces are the originals "Ascension" and "Anachronism." The former, the most boppish track on the CD, has a long shifting melody that lets Harris tastefully demonstrate the depth of his technical and improvisational skills. "Anachronism" is a blues, pure and simple, a timeless statement drawn from the tradition and from Harris' unique ability to keep the tradition vital and progressive. ~ Jim Todd https://www.allmusic.com/album/listen-to-barry-harris-mw0000046433

Don Braden's The Voice of the Saxophone is, for the most part, impressive. His quartet arrangements of "After the Rain" and the title track should turn heads. His big-toned tenor sax carries the octet in covers of hard bop gems like "Soul Station" and "Speak No Evil." He's also making headway as a composer, especially on "Cozy," which features both him and Vincent Herring on flutes. At last! A recording firmly planted in the jazz tradition of Charles Mingus, but updated and as fresh as this morning's brew. Bassist Kyle Eastwood has brought together a collection of (mostly) original compositions and mixed them with programmed or hip-hop rhythms underneath a mainstream horn section to create an accessible yet challenging listen. On the original "Marrakech," Michael Stevens' keyboards and programming create an exotic Middle Eastern flavor that melds perfectly with the serpentine soprano sax and mourning duduk. "Solferino" creates a mood of haunting moonlight sonatas, featuring the dark and forboding tenor saxophone of Doug Webb. A Freddie Hubbard-like Jim Rotondi spits out bullets over a CTI-era keyboard backdrop on "Cosmo." Eastwood even digs up the Swing Era classic "Big Noise" with whistles and all, grooving it with a heavy beat that is a perfect counterbalance to the bop solos by Webb and trumpeter Lee Thornberg. Paris Blue has something for everyone: creativity, deep grooves and excellent lead solos. Something new is rising from Eastwood. ~ George Harris https://www.allaboutjazz.com/paris-blue-kyle-eastwood-rendezvous-review-by-george-harris.php

Every song on the album "For You A Thousand Times" is a musical story in which the Norwegian jazz singer and songwriter Silje Nergaard makes past encounters and personal experiences with rousing melodies in a subtly arranged sound panorama. "I have seen pictures of how families from North and South Korea have met again after decades of separation. Everyone cried with joy and were filled with happiness. This is the song "For You a Thousand Times", "recalls Nergaard. One of the most intimate memories is her "Hush Little Bird," a sleepy figure for her little Ethiopian adoptive son Jonah, who sneaks in his native language before falling asleep. "For You A Thousand Times" is full of such stories: About invisible connections, longing and love. It is Nergaard's most personal album and a musical tale full of hope. Nergaard is accompanied by Andreas Ulvo (keyboard), Audun Erlien (bass), Sidiki Camara (percussion), Wetle Holte (drums and percussion), Mathias Eick (Trompetet), Håkon Aase (violin) and Håkon Korn. If most people identify Jack Palance as an actor and not a country singer, that's because they're unfamiliar with the album he cut for Warner Bros. in 1969. Palance gives the actor a chance to step from movie to recording studio to cut a handful of country classics and a few self-penned originals. And while the overall setup may strike one as an exercise in novelty, the results transcend amateur status. Palance starts the collection off with Red Lane and Hank Cochran's "Brother Love," singing in his deep voice and backed by some nifty rolling guitar and dobro. There are fun versions of "Heartaches By the Number" and "Green, Green Grass of Home," and a real nice take on Curly Putman and Billy Sherrill's "My Elusive Dreams." Buddy Killen's production carries certain handicaps from the period, including cheesy background singers, but he never crowds Palance's vocals or buries the hot licks of the studio musicians. Of particular interest are the three Palance songs, most notably "The Meanest Guy That Ever Lived." The song, in fact, sounds a lot like a parody of the Western persona he relied on in a number of movies, complete with "a gun on each hip" and "a snarl on my lip." The 2003 re-release of Palance makes the package even more entertaining by adding a set of liner notes by Raymond Hall. ~by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

"This is not so much a jazz album as it is an intimate pairing of like-minded musicians performing as they might do for a few friends in their living room. Heather Keizur is a new name to me but she demonstrates skill and frankly, a lot of caring in the nine selections heard here. Interestingly, four of them are in French and she handles the language with ease, and often with passion. I was especially enamored with her version of the Jacques Brel tune “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” also known as “If You Go Away.”

Her musical partner is longtime Portland favorite Steve Christofferson. He is well suited to his role here, having worked for decades in the same capacity with an-other PDX all-star, Nancy King. The duo brings idyllic communication to the session, bringing on almost recital like quality to the proceedings. The pianist adds some extra luster with occasional forays on Rhodes and melodica.

The entire album shines with great feeling and musicianship from both artists. Still, a guy has to have a couple of faves. Mine were the Johnny Mandel-Dave Frishberg beauty “You Are There,” and the Legrand-Bergman ballad “The Summer Knows.” Aside from the “French connection,” the remaining tunes include the pretty pop opus “Almost Blue;” a country sounding thing called “Always On My Mind;” and the Mancini-Mercer evergreen, “Moon River.” Keizur always delivers a rare sense of intimacy on these very warm renditions, and Christofferson is more a musical partner than simply an accompanist. Kudos to them both on a beautifully crafted performance." ~George Fendell, The Jazz Society of Oregon

Mark Murphy often seemed to be the only true jazz singer of his generation. A young, hip post-bop vocalist, Murphy spent most of his career sticking to the standards -- and often presented radically reworked versions of those standards while many submitted to the lure of the lounge singer -- during the artistically fallow period of the 1970s and '80s. Marketed as a teen idol by Capitol during the mid-'50s, Murphy deserted the stolid world of commercial pop for a series of exciting dates on independent labels that featured the singer investigating his wide interests: Jack Kerouac, Brazilian music, songbook recordings, vocalese, and hard bop, among others.

He grew up near Syracuse, New York, born into an intensely musical family (both parents sang). Mark began playing piano as a child, and studied both voice and theater while at college. He toured through Canada with a jazz trio for a time and spent a while back home before he moved to New York in early 1954. A few television appearances gained him a contract with Decca Records, and he debuted with 1956's Meet Mark Murphy. He released one more LP for Decca before signing to Capitol in 1959. Though label executives often forced material (and an excessively clean-cut image) on the young singer, he managed to distinguish himself with good sets of standards, musical accompaniment furnished by West Coast jazz regulars, and a distinctive vocal style that often twisted lines and indulged in brief scatting to display his jazz credentials.

He eventually released four LPs for Capitol, but never reached popular audiences the way the label intended. In 1961, Murphy recorded his first album for Riverside, a set of standards and bop vocals named Rah! that gave a first glimpse at his ambition. Though the twentysomething Murphy seemed a little young for a saloon-song chestnut like "Angel Eyes," he performed quite well on side two, styled after a Lambert, Hendricks & Ross LP with vocal covers of bop standards including "Milestones" and Annie Ross' "Twisted." It and its follow-up, the themed LP That's How I Love the Blues, included a top-notch backing group including jazz heroes such as Clark Terry, Snooky Young, Al Cohn, Bill Evans, and Blue Mitchell. The records also displayed Murphy's penchant for trawling the entirety of the 20th century popular/jazz repertory for songs ranging from the slightly overdone to the downright forgotten.

By the mid-'60s, Murphy had begun to recognize his sizable European fan base. Along with scores of American expatriates, he spent many years in Europe and didn't even issue his LPs in America during the rest of the '60s. Instead, he recorded LPs for British labels including Fontana and Immediate (the latter run by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham). Murphy also collaborated with the Clarke-Boland Big Band for 1967's Midnight Mood. His frequent nightclub performances and intimate stage presence also earned rave reviews from jazz and vocal critics. By the time of his return to America in the early '70s, Murphy had become a major name in vocal jazz.

With a contract from Muse in hand, Murphy began recording what would become close to two dozen albums for the label, ranging from earthy '70s dates with the Brecker brothers to Jack Kerouac tributes complete with spoken word readings to a two-volume Nat King Cole Songbook series. During that period, Murphy was one of the only straight jazz vocalists (other than old-guard names like Sinatra and Tormé) to actually make a living out of his craft. He toured relentlessly as well, and remained as hip a name to drop in 1999 as he was in 1959. After the '90s, Murphy released a handful of albums including Some Time Ago in 2000, Memories of You in 2003, and Love Is What Stays in 2007. He died in October 2015 at the age of 83.

“Let the rain come, drops of silent silver sorrow.” What a beautiful image, one of many in Leaving Traces, the second album from Sietske Roscam Abbing, a Dutch vocalist and lyricist who has studied in the United States and taught in India. What strikes you immediately about this album is its clarity. It’s not just about the recording quality (which is flawless), or the packaging (striking and beautiful), it’s the vision, the words and emotions expressed. Her enunciation is so perfect so you can savour the lyrics without having to resort to the insert for the words. The lyrics are poems in themselves, expressed with perfect phrasing, emotional depth and confidence.

The titles are a feast for the senses – Chasin’ Rainbows, Let The Rain Come, Two Feet on Shore. There is an arc to the album – it opens in sunlight, washes through rain to the dark time of the year at winter solstice, then the irresistible pull towards summer, each experience leaving a trace, an impression, either physically or mentally.

Let the Rain Come is based on a Yiddish folk song called In the Darkness, but Sietske was not familiar with its title or lyrics. Instead, from her own listening, she captured its sadness and yearning and turned it into a love song. Herein lies her skills as a lyricist and singer, her ability to express her thoughts simply yet deeply and render them unforgettable with her beautiful gentle voice.

Most of the compositions are by pianist Dirk Balthaus, the remainder are by Balthaus and Siestke, and all the lyrics are by Sietske Roscam Abbing. Her band supports her very ably and responsively. Take the song Solstice where traces of shooting stars are imagined in electronic guitar washes from expressive guitarist Eran Har Even. A sensitive accompanist, Balthaus contributes a melancholy grounding to the songs.

This album will certainly leave traces in your heart for a long time for its entrancing atmosphere, deep wisdom and great beauty. Highly recommended. ~Mary James (jazz promoter)
