Jazz singer Sherry Dyanne is known for her powerful performance. She performs with her own band across the world in clubs and festival stages, received a Edison Award nomination for her debut album ‘Sing me a Song’ and sold over 38.000 albums of her latest christmas album ‘Let it Glow’ in the USA.

In 2001 Sherry performed in the Dutch TV talent show The Soundmixshow and became runner up in the finals. Sherry shared the stage with George Duke, Michael Franti, Candy Dulfer, Trijntje Oosterhuis and Michiel Borstlap. Sherry performed at the prominent jazzfestivals like North Sea Jazz and The Hague Jazz and also performed several times on Holland’s prime time TV shows such as: De Wereld Draait Door, Koffietijd and Max with her own band, Candy Dulfer and Sven Hammond Soul.

In 2011 she released her debut album ‘Sing me a Song’ with guestplayer Candy Dulfer which became a big succes. The album received nominations by Dutch radio and got 4 star reviews by Holland’s leading press such as Jazzisme, Grazia and Nu.nl. Since the release of ‘Sing me a Song’ Sherry has appeared in various national newspaper and magazine’s such as Parool, NRC Handelsblad, NRC Next, Marie Claire, Viva and Veronica magazine. After and before the Album release Sherry played festivals and venues across Europe, The USA, South America, Turkey and Israel.

In 2015 and 2016 Sherry and award winning jazz pianoplayer Michiel Borstlap toured with a theatershow about the life of Billie Holiday. 2016 has been an exciting year for Sherry. She started a close collaboration with leading retail brand Crate and Barrel, releasing the exclusive Christmas album Let it Glow produced by Sherry herself. She also played special in-store shows at their stores across the USA. Marlene Paula VerPlanck was an American jazz and pop vocalist whose body of work centered on big band jazz, the American songbook, and cabaret.

VerPlanck was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey Her father, Anthony J. Pampinella (1908–1993), operated a gasoline station there, and her mother, Pauline A. Biase (1913–2008), whose family ran an Italian restaurant. She married trombonist, composer, and arranger J. William "Billy" VerPlanck (1930–2009) in 1955, and he became her musical collaborator and champion. They were married for 52 years, until his death in 2009.

VerPlank graduated from Bloomfield High School, and considered a career in journalism. She began performing as a teenager at the age of 19, at a nightclub in Newark, the Well. Her debut album, I Think of You with Every Breath I Take, was released in 1955 when she was 21, and featured Hank Jones, Joe Wilder, Wendell Marshall, Kenny Clarke, and Herbie Mann (uncredited). VerPlanck then went to work as a vocalist for Charlie Spivak's band, and later sang with the Tommy Dorsey band and with Tex Beneke's band.

VerPlanck was a prolific studio vocalist for commercial jingles during the 1960s and 1970s, and by the 1960s became known as the "New York jingle queen." She recorded thousands of jingles, often for low pay, although her fortunes changed when she sang an arrangement of the 1930s Campbell's Soup "M'm M'm Good" song, which became widely known. Other notable jingles she recorded included "Nationwide is on your side" for the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and "Weekends were made for Michelob" for Anheuser-Busch's Michelob beer. She later told the press that the latter was highly lucrative for her, because she put a "Yeah!" at the end of the jingle that was used over and over again in versions of the jingle recorded by Billy Eckstine, Vic Damone, and Brook Benton, earning her continued royalties. Her jingle work allowed her to hone the clarity of her diction when singing, and she became known for her ability to enunciate the lyrics of songs clearly even while investing them with emotion. Although she toiled largely in obscurity, her voice became widely known to millions of people during the 1960s and 1970s through the familiarity and popularity of her jingles.

VerPlanck also sang backup for Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and Mel Torme, and she performed around the United States and internationally as a cabaret singer. Despite her long and successful career in jingles and as a studio backing vocalist, her second solo album, Marlene VerPlanck Loves Johnny Mercer, was not recorded until 1979, 24 years after her first album. Her solo career then began in earnest, and she released more than 20 albums, mostly on the Audiophile label, and toured extensively as a soloist. She specialized in the Great American Songbook, especially the works of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers, and gained a reputation as one of the most accomplished interpreters of the genre.

In January 1983, VerPlanck took part in recording In the Digital Mood, an early all-digital recording of the music of Glenn Miller by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The album included two vocal tracks – "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo", and VerPlanck was invited to sing the female vocals in a recreation of the singing group The Modernaires, which consisted of one female and four male vocalists, and to bring four male colleagues with her to sing the four male vocal parts. The album's producers expected her to bring unknown session and back-up singers with her, but she surprised and delighted the producers and the orchestra by arriving with Julius LaRosa, Mel Torme, Michael Mark, and Marty Nelson for the recording session on January 20, 1983.

VerPlanck last performed in December 2017 at a jazz club in New York City. She died of pancreatic cancer at a hospital in Manhattan, New York City on January 14, 2018, aged 84 and was buried at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Bloomfield.https://www.allaboutjazz.com/musicians/marlene-verplanck

These three are all leaders of their own bands in different places. Here they combine to form what used to be called a super group. The music is all in the blues and bop domain, with easy swing, crisp, inventive solos and a solid rhythmic pulse throughout. Ms Tsuruga and guitarist Dechter play in solo mode and quickly revert to rhythmic duties when their own solos end. Hamilton is the only one whose duties are solely to provide a solid beat on every track and this he does handsomely. His own solos are well structured with attention to the contours of each piece of music. The three kick off with a solid blues, Mag’s Groove, that gives all three players a chance to shine. Orange Coals is a faster blues written by Dechter. He takes the first extended solo with the other two in full flow behind him. Akiko provides stimulating Hammond organ solos and also manages to keep a solid bass line going at all times, whether she is in the spotlight or not. The Osaka Samba is an attractive line from the organist, a sort of Japan embraces the samba but it all sounds very Latin and has a cracking beat. Still on the blues and gospel trail the trio next tackle A Baptist Beat, Hank Mobley’s funky line. Taken at much the same tempo that Hank used in the 60s, the piece is very downhome. Dechter manages an original solo spot here; this is very much his own take on the material. Akiko digs in too and there is much of the American bop and blues flavour in her solo and virtually nothing Oriental. There is a personal approach to Coltrane’s Moment’s Notice although the trio keep very much to the spirit of the composition in their straightahead, uptempo reading. Lion’s Gate is a gentle ballad by Akiko with singing guitar and organ and drums offering flowing rhythm. The set finishes with two hardy standards. Hamilton kicks off I Remember You with crisp brushwork and keeps it moving throughout in the same manner. Fine, well thought out solos from Dechter and Tsurugo follow on. Trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, one of the mainstays of the Mingus Big Band, has some distinguished company on his Criss Cross debut: Chris Potter on tenor sax, David Kikoski on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. It's highly unlikely that an A-list quintet such as this would let listeners down and, sure enough, the disc swings like crazy from beginning to end. The program is bookended by two takes of Colley's "Catalyst," which the bassist also recorded for his Portable Universe album.

Other highlights include the difficult and seldom-covered "Missouri Uncompromised" by Pat Metheny, Sipiagin's steady-burning "Room 28," and a long take of Kikoski's harmonically free "Spacing." The group slows things down with Toninho Horta's "Moonstone" and the leader's lilting title track. (Their odd-metered interpretation of George Shearing's "Conception" is strikingly similar to the version that appears on George Colligan's Como la Vida Puede Ser.) Bolder and more unorthodox records have been made, but this kind of scorching, straight-ahead musicianship is always a pleasure to hear.By David R. On his latest album, Keyed Up, the well-traveled and well-respected guitarist Bobby Broom pays tribute to pianists "who have been an important part of [his] musical life." As he writes, ..."many great pianists who didn't need to include my six-string version of what they could already do harmonically and melodically saw fit to include me. Perhaps, among other things, this is my way of saying 'thank you' to them."

Another way to thank them may have been to include their names as composers somewhere on the album. Instead, one has to read an accompanying press release to learn that the honorees include Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Erroll Garner

Chick Corea, Horace Silver and Herbie Hancock who collectively wrote nine of the album's ten numbers (including two takes of Tyner's "Blues on the Corner"). In spite of that, their names are nowhere to be found on the album's jacket or playlist, nor in Broom's adulatory liner notes.

The session's other tune, "Scoochie," was written by trumpeter Booker Ervin for pianist Horace Parlan's 1961 Blue Note album, On the Spur of the Moment. So, pianists were in some way involved in the genesis of every number. Yet another pianist, Justin Dillard, is a member of Broom's efficient quartet, and he doubles from time to time on the Hammond SKX organ. Bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins help keep the rhythm in sync.

Broom opens with a bouncy reading of Powell's "Hallucinations" (renamed "Budo" once Miles Davis endorsed it), moving next to Miller's meditative "Second Thoughts" and Corea's melodious "Humpty Dumpty." Williams' easygoing "Soulful Bill" and Silver's quirky "Quicksilver" (played a tad slower than most other versions) precede the venerable "Misty," which Broom was reluctant to include until Carroll reminded him, "It's by Erroll Garner!." Hancock's "Driftin,'" a medium-tempo charmer which belies its name, leads to the first reading of "Blues on the Corner," Ervin's amiable "Scoochie" and "Blues on the Corner," Take 2, which closes the studio recording.

Broom's guitar is bright and nimble, and his teammates carry out their assignments handily and without error. Vocalist Lyn Stanley ironically calls her ensemble the Big Band Jazz Maverick when it is she who is the maverick, the evidence being how seamlessly she expands the holiday canon on Novel Noël: A Jingle Jazz Celebration. Over the past decade, Stanley has done two significant things: one, she has methodically and with carefully considered concepts addressed in the Great American Songbook, and, two, she has become a foremost audiophile, sweating all of the small stuff. This added attention and effort pays off in her superb holiday offering. Originally intended for release in 2021, personal and global circumstances changed the project's trajectory. Six of the 13 selections were released under the same title.

The entire package was worth the wait. Stanley spikes the eggnog with vintage, 100-proof nostalgia, recalling the swinging 1950s. The opening track, "Zat You Santa Claus" sets the tone for the entire release, with Stanley echoing Pops before launching into the most sophisticated and swinging updates of the song. Eartha Kitt may own "Santa, Baby," but Stanley one-ups that performance with this playful and festive steal from Satchmo. "Little Drummer Boy" is mashed up with "Take Five" and "Mary Did You Know" receives a stark and plaintive reading. Stanley deftly slides into the playlist standards made for the holidays: "Come Dance With Me," "It's Magic," and "The Way You Look Tonight" sound as if they have been in the holiday canon all along; what Stanley shows us is that they have been. It is fitting that this recording is the best the singer has imagined and recorded. This is what Christmas is about.

Benny Carter - Princeton Concerts (And Beyond) [eight-album series]

"Benny Carter: The Princeton Concerts" is an eight-album series recorded at Carter’s request and until now, unissued. Although he received many distinguished awards (among the National Medal of the Arts, multiple Grammys, and the Kennedy Center Award), it was the doctorate bestowed by Princeton University in 1974 that he especially treasured. Invited and encouraged by Professor Morroe Berger, Carter not only grew close to the school as he led many classes and seminars, but also to the Berger family. Out of that relationship came the monumental biography and cultural history Benny Carter: A Life In American Music (written by Berger, his son Ed, and James Patrick) and the music presented here, recorded by Berger’s son, Ken.

Across these eight albums, Carter leads small groups and one all-star big band comprised of some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. The intensity and interaction with a live audience always brought out the best in Carter and each concert has its own unique moments of inspired improvisation. He effortlessly reveals his mastery of the alto saxophone, the elegance of compositions, and his graciousness as a bandleader in giving generous space to his compatriots.

All, save two, were recorded at Princeton between 1972 and 1983. There is a brilliant 1978 evening captured in Buffalo that features one of the only recordings of the legendary pianist Al Tinney, whose role in the creation of bebop in the early 1940s has long been heralded by historians, but who went largely unrecorded during his long career. The collection set ends chronologically with music from the 90-year-old Carter, playing with astounding freshness and creativity, backed by pianist Chris Neville and bassist Steve LaSpina, who were in Carter’s last band.

Mrs. Hilma Carter has made a gift of this music to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to support their mission of preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz. It is her wish that the music be made available free of charge, and the museum is placing it across the world’s most popular streaming services. In addition, visitors are always welcome (by appointment) to hear the music at the museum.

Hammond B3 organist Akiko Tsuruga has been a regular on the New York jazz scene since her arrival in 2001. Eddie Diehl has long been respected among his fellow jazz musicians, but finally makes his recording debut as a leader with on one of the first CDs issued by a new label, Lineage. It's quite a plus to have a co-leader like veteran pianist Hank Jones, along with having bassist John Webber and drummer Mickey Roker. While Diehl has a fluid touch on his instrument, he seems just as happy featuring his bandmates as himself. While the two standards from the Rodgers & Hart songbook are enjoyable, the interpretations of less-frequently heard works like the bop gem "Swedish Schnapps," Oscar Pettiford's intricate blues "Swinging Till the Girls Come Home," and Ellington sideman Harold Ousley's gently swinging "Aquarian Melody" are the tracks that command one's attention. Diehl also contributed a pair of choice originals. The informal air of this recording session almost make it sound like a gathering of old friends playing late at night for their own amusement; hopefully, Eddie Diehl won't have to wait long for an opportunity to lead another record date. ~Ken Dryden

Nice to add some Jazz to the mix. Sarah Partridge is an American Jazz vocalist and songwriter of enough distinction that I'm aware of her, but apparently not enough to get a Wikipedia page. She started out as an actress (she's in Risky Business), but an evening of karaoke got her noticed by someone in the business and the next thing you know, she's a recording artist. She might be best known for "Bright Lights & Promises", an album of Jazz interpretations of the songs of Janis Ian. This excellent album finds pianist Kirk Lightsey exploring five standards and his bassist Santi Wilson Debriano's "Nandi" with a solid quartet. Drummer Eddie Gladden is an asset but trumpeter Jerry Gonzales (whose muted statements on four of the six selections recall the lyricism of Miles Davis) often comes close to stealing the show. Lightsey, who sounds particularly strong on the ballads, is the obvious leader and his tasteful yet swinging piano is a joy to hear.

Elvin Jones was an icon of drumming, a powerful package of energy and inspiration and a true master of his craft. This historic live recording from 1981, released for the first time, shows the powerful and dynamic performance of this great musician in synergy with his superb band.

Elvin Ray Jones was born in Pontiac in 1927, as the youngest of ten children and brother of pianist Hank and trumpeter Thad Jones. He was one of the most respected and successful jazz drummers of all time. His illustrious career included spending five years as the drummer for saxophonist John Coltrane, including playing on milestone albums such as 'A Love Supreme'.

Jones called his own ensemble 'Jazz Machine' and this 1981 version included two tenor-saxophonists, Carter Jefferson and Dwayne Armstrong, guitarist Marvin Horne; and with the Japanese pianist Fumio Karashima, who added a noteworthy dosage of Far-East melodics and harmony to the concert. Together with Karashima and the well-tried bassist Andy McCloud, Elvin Jones had recorded a trio-LP just previously to the European tour documented here.

New York City based Hammond Organist and pianist, Akiko Tsuruga, has established herself as an 'in demand' player since arriving from her home town of Osaka, Japan in 2001. Akiko began Organ lessons at age three, and starting performing professionally throughout Japan after graduating from Osaka College Of Music. While performing in Japan, she encountered and played with many noted American musicians, Roy Hargrove, Jeff "Tain" Watts and Grady Tate to name a few. Grady Tate has been most influential in her career. He played on her debut CD, "Harlem Dreams" and encouraged her to move to New York. After arriving in New York Akiko established herself as one of area's top organist / pianist. Her trio featuring guitarist Eric Johnson and drummer Vincent Ector has been one of the area's top groups, working many jazz nightclubs including, Dizzy's (at Lincoln center) and The Blue Note. Her trio also plays private parties and summer outdoor concerts. Her long awaited debut CD, "Harlem Dreams" featuring Grady Tate and Frank Wess was released in Japan on the M&I label on May 19, 2004. Akiko's CD is so popular in Japan she has returned twice to perform. Her CD release tour featured Grady Tate on drums and guitarist Satoshi Inoue in August 2004.

In September 2005, she returned to Japan with guitarist Eric Johnson and drummer Fukushi Tainaka. It was this trip that caught the eyes and ears of Hammond Suzuki officials. The group was invited to the factory and Mr. Suzuki personally awarded her a Hammond XK-3 organ and endorsement. Among her accomplishments is an organ jazz instructional book "Hammond Organ Complete" (Berklee Press) which was translated from English to Japanese and has been published in Japan. When she's not leading her trio, she still enjoys working as a featured sideman in Grady Tate's vocal group and with saxophonist Jerry Weldon and many others. Akiko is currently working on a new CD to be released in January 2007.

For veteran jazz chanteuse Jane Monheit, Christmas is all about warm affection, both romantic and neighborly. That, at least, is the impression she gives on her second seasonal album, The Merriest. Its nine selections fit her naturally saucy delivery, and the majority of them fit her propensity to interpret the works of songwriters comprising the mid-20th century Great American Songbook. She arguably adds a page by being the first artist to record a previously unissued number by late Broadway mainstay Cy Coleman.

The Merriest’s arrangements include a gingerly applied march intro and an Afro-Latin rumble in places that fit just right, however unexpected they first may sound. A duet with John Pizzarelli may be a bit mushy for some, but good for it not being another rendering of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Depending on the band she has in tow and her set list on winter tours, Monheit could provide a less flashy, more subdued alternative to Mariah Carey'’s self-declared rule as holiday queen. Kirk Lightsey; Home Piano (RR-22). Previously unreleased solo piano recording, capturing the great Detroit musician on a November 2012 afternoon in Buenos Aires. The intimate and relaxed atmosphere of the session added to the majestic sound of the Fazioli F308 grand piano, generate the right frame for the music to emerge with pleasant spontaneity.

Kirk Lightsey, one of the last pianists of a wonderful, unrepeatable era; due both to the quality and quantity of the musicians involved, and what the jazz environment generated and meant (particularly, perhaps, for African-American musicians). At some point in time, fusion lost its way. Some say it never really had a firm enough direction, existing only as a symbol of excess, power, and virtuosity to begin with. But those steeped in '70s and early '80s music of this sort know the truth: A perfect blend of rip-roaring lines, one-step-beyond melodicism, feats of daring, and mind-bending grooves took the music to great heights in its first decade, bringing it to a point that's never been equaled or duplicated since.

Instead of living on as a celebration of stylistic convergence and unity, fusion became a dirty word in the decades that followed, disdained by a growing faction of purists, muddied by those who put complexity and athleticism above accessibility, and muddled by those who never really heard the message the right way in the first place. But all is not lost. Guitarist Adam Rogers has delivered DICE, reminding us about the virtues of this much-maligned music while extending it into a new realm of his own creation.

While the aforementioned setup clearly focuses on a specific style of music, the truth is that it doesn't really matter what you call this. Fusion for modernists, post-modern groove art, and electro-hypno jazz are all perfectly fine descriptors that say enough without really saying anything at all. Words just don't suffice. You simply have to hear this to really get it. Rogers, bassist Fima Ephron, and drummer Nate Smith bring their long history together to bear through aggressive gestures, flowing grooves, trippy asides, and searing solos. If the name "Trio of Doom" wasn't already taken, these guys could've owned it, bar none.

While Rogers' position as one of the finest guitarists in the land was established quite some time ago, DICE makes it clear that he's not one to rest on his laurels. With "L The Bruce" Rogers brings a quirky sensibility in line with tight rhythmic choreography, on "Flava" he assaults the senses, through "Elephant" he combines slick lines and mind-blowing technique, and during a trip through the Patsy Cline-associated "Crazy" he puts the big guns away and focuses on the unvarnished beauty of the song as seen through a glassy prism. On one track Rogers might be delivering the solo to end all solos, but on another he might be boiling down the essence of Mississippi Fred McDowell into a melodically engaging, six-minute spiritual raga. You don't know what you're going to get from Adam Rogers from one moment or song to the next, but you know it's going to be something.

There are many points on the album where production work and overdubs add greatly to the mix the use of samples and loops to thicken the surroundings, a complementary glaze painted atop a trio romp, the underwater additions to "Sea Miner" but those enhancements shouldn't take away from the raw truths surrounding these three. When you look past all of that, what remains is an incredibly sophisticated power-and-pocket trio that's as intelligent as it is muscular. DICE, not surprisingly, delivers on every level. Ramsey Lewis Celebrates The Music Of The Fab Four With Posthumous CD 'The Beatles Songbook,' His First Solo Piano Recording

The late, legendary pianist Ramsey Lewis offers an intimate, familiar affair with his solo piano recording The Beatles Songbook: The Saturday Salon Series, Volume One, to be released January 6 on Steele Records. This selection of tunes by the iconic songwriting duo of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, approved for release by Lewis, is also a surprising DIY project, created during livestreamed sessions in Lewis’s own Chicago home.

Lewis, of course, is no stranger to covering of postwar pop music. He had a smash 1965 hit with his cover of Dobie Gray’s “The In Crowd,” which he followed up with a successful version of “Hang on Sloopy.” He has even assayed the Beatles’ catalog before, scoring a minor hit with “A Hard Day’s Night” and even releasing Mother Nature’s Son, an homage to the Beatles’ White Album, in 1968.

He was a latecomer, however, to unaccompanied piano performance. Until recent years, Lewis had almost never performed as a soloist. But the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to perform any other way, and during the lockdowns Lewis initiated a series of monthly webcasts called “The Saturday Salon.” Always an artist with a populist touch, Lewis included the Beatles’ songs in his webcasts because it was music that, like his own, had demonstrated universal appeal.

“They have a catalog of songs that can stand up as standards that are fun to play and fun to solo on,” he said. “Their music has been recorded by symphonies and orchestras, rock bands, jazz bands. I don’t know any other pop act whose music has been recorded across the board like this.”

Even with their exhaustive coverage, Lewis is able to unlock new secrets and breathe new life into the tunes. His “And I Love Her” explores the possibilities of both the song’s harmonies and its famous four-note riff. “Rocky Raccoon” gets a beautiful reharmonization. Lewis plays up the gospel roots of “Hey Jude,” and in the ballads “Blackbird” and “Golden Slumbers” he finds previously unknown reservoirs of the blues.

Lifted directly from the 2020 livestream audio, The Beatles Songbook sounds like the home recording it is. But that sound is a feature, not a bug: It amplifies the intimacy of the performance, as if we were hearing a message from a friend, and reminds us that to the end, Lewis was able to work in any circumstances and create great art.

About Ramsey Lewis

Ramsey Lewis was born May 27, 1935 in Chicago. He began playing piano at the age of four, learning classical from teachers, gospel from the church, and jazz from his father’s record collection. Through Wells High School and into Chicago Musical College he intended to become a concert classical pianist, but fate intervened: While working at a record store, Lewis met bassist Eldee Young and drummer Red Holt, fellow jazz lovers who joined with him to form the Ramsey Lewis Trio.

In 1965, after a decade of working together both on bandstands and on Leonard and Phil Chess’s Argo Records, Lewis and the trio achieved a surprise top 10 pop hit with their version of “The In Crowd,” recorded live in Washington DC. The record made Lewis a star, which he compounded with subsequent hits “Hang on Sloopy,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” and “Wade in the Water.” After the trio disbanded, Lewis carried on with new ensembles and continued pursuing pop-jazz success, surfacing on the pop charts again with members of Earth, Wind & Fire on 1974’s Sun Goddess. His popular success continued into the 1980s and ‘90s, when he formed the popular crossover group Urban Knights.

In the 21st century, Lewis became a revered elder statesman of jazz, finding a career renaissance as a composer, broadcaster, educator, and artistic director of the Ravinia Jazz Festival. Lewis was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters fellowship in 2007. He spent his final year working with journalist Aaron Cohen on his memoir, Gentleman of Jazz (to be published May 2023 by Blackstone Publishing), before passing away at his Chicago home on September 12, 2022.

First, we begin with a 1944 rendition of one of her signature songs, 'Sentimental Journey,' with the big band that really vaulted her into the stratosphere, The Les Brown Orchestra. Then we double back all the way to her very first radio performances with local Cincinnati bandleader Barney Rapp, who was the man who urged Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff to change her name to Doris Day.
