It takes a bold, knowledgeable, and inventive group to call itself The Verve Jazz Ensemble. The moniker Verve conjures the legendary jazz label Verve Records: once home to the greatest pioneering names in the artform from Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and Ella Fitzgerald to Bill Evans, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich. It is in the spirit of the Verve label’s 1950s - ‘60s hard bop heyday that The Verve Jazz Ensemble composes, arranges, and performs jazz of a timeless quality. Across eight albums and counting the latest entitled All In the “VJE” has been satisfying the cravings of critics and audiences alike, consistently placing near or at the very top of the JazzWeek radio chart for the past decade. No less than Ellis Marsalis, the late, revered patriarch of the highly distinguished Marsalis Family that gave us Wynton, Branford, Jason and Delfeayo Marsalis, observed, “The VJE is the new MJQ,” referring to the fabled Modern Jazz Quartet.

Drummer Josh Feldstein founded The Verve Jazz Ensemble in 2006 as a band that paid homage to the past while vehemently establishing newer, younger audiences for the now vintage sound. “Part of the band’s mission,” said Feldstein, “is to expand the audience of classic instrumental jazz, to identify melodies that pop audiences can easily relate and groove to but not need a degree in music to dig.”

The Verve Jazz Ensemble is a band that “chooses to move in a musical direction that’s appealing to radio as well as our broad base of US and international listeners,” Josh added. “Our mission is to bring forward the acoustic jazz artform in a way that both veteran listeners and newcomers to Jazz easily appreciate.”

Feldstein’s passion for acoustic jazz stems back to when he was 11 years old and living with his family in Queens, New York. He was taking drum lessons at the time from a teacher who turned him onto the volcanic Gene Krupa. “One day my teacher told me I sounded like Krupa,” Josh recalled. “Well, I don’t think that was remotely true, but I dug Gene’s drumming intensely and couldn’t stop listening.” The LP he pointed Josh to was “Verve’s Choice: The Best of Gene Krupa.” Josh was hooked

. “I spent the next 10 years grabbing up all of the jazz albums recorded for Verve Records that I could,” he states. “I hung out listening to Papa Jo Jones and the Countsmen at the West End Café on Broadway and 113th street in Manhattan. I’d catch the incredible Buddy Rich and his big band, and legends like Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Count Basie. Any given month would bring into town the best of the best like (saxophonist) Stan Getz, (pianist) Monty Alexander, and on and on.

“I put music on the backburner once I entered college, however, because I didn’t think I could make money as a jazz musician,” Josh said. “While I kept practicing and did play from time to time I even toured for a while with a big band in the mid-Atlantic area it was part-time stuff by and large.

“Some years later, when I was living in Connecticut, I came across the playing of a young saxophonist / keyboardist named Jon Blanck. He really impressed me as a young cat who could really play in the authentic hardbop idiom, which is my foundation. I approached him to play locally just for fun. We ended up booking restaurants and country clubs and becoming close friends. The band developed a strong reputation and a faithful following. Once the VJE started playing clubs throughout Connecticut and eventually in New York proper, things started happening.”

The VJE was a quintet when it first ventured into the studio to record its debut album, It’s About Time (2012), followed by East End Sojourn (2014) which featured guest Peter Bernstein on guitar. Both charted Top 10 on the JazzWeek radio charts. Those albums were followed by top 25 Perimeter (2016) and yet another top 10 album, Swing-A-Nova (2017), recorded by the rhythm section as a trio album.

For 2018, Feldstein expanded the tenor sax, trumpet, piano, bass and drums quintet into a septet with alto / flute and trombone for the VJE’s fifth album, Connect The Dots, a change that shot the band to the #1 position atop the JazzWeek chart for two weeks. Next came Night Mode (2019) another top 10-charter followed during the Covid lockdown by The VJE: Very Live! (2021) recorded at a pre-pandemic benefit concert in Hadley, MA which kept the VJE brand alive and well.

For VJE’s eighth and latest album, All In, the septet joyfully explores the theme of “Mid-20th century Americana” via two original compositions and eight arrangements of some classic and other little-heard material. The band consists of Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet, Willie Applewhite on trombone, Alexa Tarantino on alto sax / flute, Jon Blanck on tenor sax, Matt Oestreicher on piano and guitar, Elias Bailey on bass, and VJE leader Josh Feldstein on drums.

Highlights of the album include the Tatum Greenblatt original title track, “All In;” an Afro Cuban approach to Neal Hefti’s beloved “The Odd Couple Theme;” another Greenblatt original entitled “What I Meant to Say Was,” set up as a musical conversation between trumpet and alto sax; and a piano trio whirl through Jean “Toots” Thielemans “Bluesette.”

All this music, along with the rest of “All In,” is in passionate keeping of The Verve Jazz Ensemble’s sworn mission to expand the audience of instrumental jazz in the United States and worldwide. “This is very important to all of us,” Feldstein shares. “My daughter is in high school, and she and her friends like our music. There are listeners everywhere of all ages who don’t know any jazz history. But when they hear our approach to jazz, they soak it in. Identifying and performing jazz melodies that pop audiences can relate to catchy yet legitimate music, with a pulse that’s our target.”

"The blackest of Italian pianists" was born May 16th, 1965, in Genoa. He studied piano with Maestro Flavio Crivelli and began his career collaborating with musicians from the Genoa Area, especially with the bassist Piero Leveratto. In 1993 he was invited for the first time in the USA. He plays with Red Holloway and Albert "Tootie" Heath on a tour on the West Coast.

In the same year he founded "We love Jazz" Workshop, now become one of the biggest events in Europe for jazz teaching. In 1994 he was hired by "Monad Records" in New York and back in the United States as pianoplayer and music director of Shawnn Monteiro's band, with Keter Betts and Bobby Durham. He has played in several european tours with the Nat Adderley Quintet, composed by Antonio Hart, Walter Booker and Jimmy Cobb.

In 2001 he joined the Archie Shepp's "Just in Time" Quartet with Wayne Dockery and Bobby Durham. Since 2001 he is the artistic director for the jazz division of AZZURRA MUSIC label. In 2003 he played at "Jazz Piano Festival" in Lucerne. In November 2004 he played in Japan, where his albums have become bestsellers.

He played in Italy, France, Germany, Corsica, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, USA, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Dubai, Luxembourg, Spain, Japan, Yugoslavia,Canada. John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia after graduating high school, where he studied music. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was one of the players at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk.

Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension, as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme (1965) and others. Decades after his death, Coltrane remains influential, and he has received numerous posthumous awards, including a special Pulitzer Prize, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church.

Born in Rome in 1949, Enrico Pieranunzi has long been one of the best-known and appreciated personalities on the European jazz scene. Pianist, composer, arranger, he has recorded more than seventy CDs under his own name, ranging from solo piano to trio, and from duet to quintet. He has played in concert and in the studio with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, Paul Motian, Chris Potter and Charlie Haden, performing at all the most important international festivals, from Montreal to Copenhagen, from Berlin to Madrid.

Pieranunzi’s formative years embraced both classical and jazz piano, and the influence of Debussy is readily apparent in the lush romanticism at the heart of his music. Emerging in the early ‘70s, Pieranunzi’s lyrical approach quickly brought him to the forefront of the European scene, and in 1984 he formed a trio with Marc Johnson and Joey Baron, the first of several outstanding groups with American musicians. In 1989, 2003 and 2008 he was voted Musician of the Year in the Musica Jazz critic’s poll and he was 1997 recipient of the Django d’Or Award for best European Jazz Musician.

In 2004 he toured Japan performing with his American trio, including bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron. In the last four, five years Pieranunzi performed more and more in the States (New York, Birdland; San Francisco, Spoleto USA Festival). On July 2010 he played the Village Vanguard and recorded live there, with Marc Johnson and Paul Motian. He is the only Italian musician ever and one of the very few European to have performed and recorded in such a historical venue.

In addition to recording many albums, he has written more than 300 compositions including “Night Bird” (recorded several times by Chet baker and performed by many others), “Hindsight” (recorded by Phil Woods) etc. Many of his compositions have become veritable international standards, three of which " two in 1991 and one in 2001 " have been included in the prestigious “New Real Books” published in the United States by “Sher Music”.

Famous writer/journalist Nat Hentoff writes: “(Pieranunzi) is a luminously lyrical pianist, with a constant flow of ideas. He builds the kind of quality of designs that have a powerful inner logic. (...) Pieranunzi can swing " crisply and surely. But in those tempos he remains his lyrical self. His music sings.”

Born in 1989, Sarah Lancman is a French vocalist, pianist and songwriter based in Paris. Starting at the tender age of seven, she began classical piano studies at the Conservatoire du Centre in Paris. Many years later, whilst she was completing her Bachelor's degree in composition, jazz piano and singin at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU), she also won First Prize in the International Shure Voice Competition in Montreux (Switzerland) in 2012, chaired that year by Quincy Jones.

Sarah has toured in her home country of France and Turkey many times and has performed in other European countries such as Switzerland and Spain. In 2016, she was invited by The Jazz Foundation of America to perform in New York as one of three “Rising Stars” from being a prior Montreux Jazz Festival winner.

Sarah also toured in Japan and South Korea in 2018. She was managed by music label Jazz Eleven for five years to 2021 and just created her own company Unlimited Music France in September 2022 for producing her new album.

She returns with a sixth album, "Le pouvoir des mots" (The Power Of Words) borrowing a majestic sweetness in which she reconnects with her love of the piano by singing on original compositions inspired by the world of Michel Legrand, Charles Aznavour as well as that of the musical comedies of the 60s, thus mixing her love for Jazz & the Chanson tradition on arrangements signed by Philippe Maniez. Accompanied by the prestigious Quatuor Hanson and special guests, Belgian-New Yorker guitarist Jeanfrancois Prins, as well as the rising jazz star, the saxophonist Louis Billette, this new opus will be released in spring 2023 : May 26TH 2023

Antonio Zambrini, pianist and composer from Milan, has drawn the attention of the critics with his cd ""Antonia e altre canzoni", 1998, Splasc(h) Records; this was favourably reviewed on several specialized magazines, in Italy and abroad, and was selected as one of the best Italian first works by the jury of the "Django d'or" prize, patronized by the French and the Italian musical critics. Thanks to its success, on "Musica Jazz" magazine (January '99), Antonio Zambrini was classified by critics at the second position in the 1998 list of the best new talents of italian jazz.

His second cd "Forme semplici", 2000, and the last one, "Quartetto", 2001, were furtherly voted in several categories in the critics referendum on "Musica Jazz", where Zambrini was confirmed as one of the best emergent talents also for the years 2000 and 2001.

Recently, Zambrini has been invited as guest star in different musical broadcastings by Radio3 RAI ("Invenzione a due voci", "Jazzclub", "Radio3suite"). His piece "Crevalcore", from the cd "Antonia...", is present also in the last compilation of the most representative signature tunes of Radio Popolare (Raccolta differenziata, Sensible Records). His piece "Antonia" has been inserted in the tribute cd for the 20 years of "Le Scimmie" jazz club, side by side with pieces by musicians like Enrico Rava, Paul Motian, Franco D'Andrea, Massimo Urbani...

His compositions are performed by some important new jazz musicians like Stefano Bollani, in Italy, and John Law, an emergent talented English pianist, who has even dedicated to Zambrini his last Cd "The Moment".

Antonio Zambrini studied guitar, flute, composition and piano; he graduated in Choir Conduction at the Conservatorio of Padua and in Jazz Music at the Conservatorio of Parma. He studied at the Jazz Music Seminars in Siena both as flutist and pianist, but he eventually preferred piano for pursuing his musical career. He performed with different groups in several Italian jazz clubs and festivals, like "Clusone Jazz" (1995, '97 and '99), the "Jazz Italiano" Festival at Finale Ligure ('95), "Saudades" in Milan ('95), Varese Festival at Giardini Estensi in '95 and 2002, the "Parma Jazz-Frontiere" International Festival in '96, "Eurojazz" at Ivrea in '97, Berchidda Festival in '97, "Estate Jazz" in Cagliari ('97), the '98 Musical Season of the Piccolo Regio Theatre in Turin, the '98 and '99 Villa Celimontana International Festival in Rome, JVC Festival in Turin ('98), "Ah Hum Jazz Fest", Milan, (2001-2002), "Free" Jazz Festival, Milan (2002), etc.

Among others, he performed with Claudio Fasoli, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Enrico Rava, Mark Murphy, Tiziano Tononi, Gabriele Mirabassi, Emanuele Cisi, Stefano D'Anna, Roberto Bonati, Andrea Dulbecco, Giorgio Licalzi, Bruno De Filippi, Javier Girotto…

He collaborates constantly with the Cineteca Italiana, Milan, for the improvised live sonorization of silent movies festivals.

He teaches in several different music schools; since 1999, he directs a summer course of improvisation and ensemble music by the "Stages Internazionali di Orvieto" (Orvieto International Stages).

In dicember 2002, at Piccolo Teatro Studio in Milan, together with the italian singer Lucia Minetti, Zambrini has composed and performed the music of "Concerto per la pace" (Concerto for peace). In 2003 he was invited to play at Berlin for two festivals: "Italian Jazz player" and "Jazz composers night". His new CD "Due colori" ("Abeat Records") is going to be released.

Junior Mance was well-known for his soulful bluesy style, but was also expert at playing bop standards. He started playing professionally when he was ten. Mance worked with Gene Ammons in Chicago between 1947 and 1949, played with Lester Young (1950), and was with the Ammons-Sonny Stitt group until he was drafted. He was the house pianist at Chicago's Bee Hive (1953 to 1954), worked as Dinah Washington's accompanist (1954 and 1955), was in the first Cannonball Adderley Quintet (1956 to 1957), and then spent two years touring with Dizzy Gillespie (1958 to 1960).

After a few months with the Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis/Johnny Griffin group, Mance formed his own trio and was primarily a leader. He led sessions for Verve, Jazzland, Riverside, Capitol, Atlantic, Milestone, and Polydor, among other labels. In the '80s, Mance joined the faculty at the New School in New York City, teaching as part of their Jazz program. He also continued to record, issuing his last album, For My Fans, It’s All About You, in 2015, one year before he retired from music. Peggy Connelly (September 25, 1931 – June 11, 2007) was a singer and actress. Connelly was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. She had a career as a singer and actress, starting with local dance bands (the first Harvey Anderson's) in the Fort Worth-Dallas area. In 1956 she recorded an album of standards, Peggy Connelly with Rusell Garcia – That Old Black Magic, for Bethlehem Records, reissued by Fresh Sound on Russell Garcia's Wigville Band. She also recorded two albums with The New Christy Minstrels. In 1957 she married Dick Martin. They divorced in the early 1960s. Connelly appeared in The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955), Houseboat (1958), and the television show Take a Good Look with Ernie Kovacs. She moved to Europe in the early 1970s and worked as a single act until the mid-1990s, when she, Sarah Tullamore and Wendy Taylor formed a trio called The Jazzberries. The Jazzberries played extensively in Paris and throughout Europe until they disbanded in 2000.

Sant Andreu Jazz Band is a project arising from a music class. Conducted by Joan Chamorro, the big band brings together children between 6 and 18 years old, around a classic jazz repertoire with lots of swing, which gained the public and sold-out some of the most important music auditoriums in Spain.

Twelve years of relentless efforts and love, of magical achievements represented by eight recordings on CD and DVD. Nine albums within the Joan Chamorro presents collection, starred by some of the young talents that emerged from the Sant Andreu Jazz Band to become up-and-coming stars on their own right: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernandez, Magali Datzira, Rita Payes, Marc Martin, Joan Mar Sauque, Elia Bastida and the projected labeled as La Magia de la Veu ("The magic in the voice").

Giovanni Mirabassi remains one of my favorite Jazz pianists. I really love his trio efforts, be it on Terra Furiosa, Live in Toyko, or, probably my preferred one, Architectures.

Mirabassi is Italian, but has been living in Paris for many years. As mentioned above, he trio output (mainly with Gianluca Renzi and Leon Parker) is fantastic, but he’s also collaborated with some excellent singers, e.g. Angela Elvira Herrera Zaparta and Maikel Ante Fajardo on Adelante, and on Sarah Lancman’s previous 2018 albums A Contretemps and Inspiring Love. Both albums only featured Sarah on the title, now we have a recording where both Lancman and Mirabassi share the cover. The two already met in 2015 and have toured together.

Sarah Lancman is a young French singer, who studied in Paris, and has released three albums so far. There is no shortage of excellent Jazz singers today, but still, Lancman has a very recognisable, unique voice. Not suprisingly, she won the first price in a jazz contest hosted by Quincy Jones.

So what do you get? Well, you could argue, is this still Jazz?

You basically get beautiful duos where Mirabassi plays in a very intimate and connected way with Sarah, who singing exclusively in Italian (note the album cover kind of gives it away) on this album.

Every once in a while, Olivier Bogé joins playing the saxophone, with a sound somewhat reminiscent of Stan Getz. So who cares if this is Jazz or not? All of this is just hugely enjoyable, beautiful, intimate music, and really worth checking out

Recorded way back in 1993 in Barcelona, pianist Brad Meldau was a kid just beginning to explore the deep science of the jazz piano trio with Mario and Jordi Rossy. He was also commencing his stint with Josh Redman and backing cats like Johnny Griffin, Jimmy Cobb, and others. His working with this trio reveals a young musician (Meldau was born in 1970) in solid command of the language he is attempting to simultaneously master and deepen. This is a club date and kicks off with an ambitious and wholly successful read of Charlie Parker's "Anthropology." The steaming rhythm leaves Meldau no choice but to careen through the melody as recklessly as a saxophonist.

He inks it note for note and then begins to move through the lower register for sevenths and ninths, playing 16th and even 32nd notes to corral the rhythm section as he moves the scale over first a half, then a whole, and then two and a half steps. A ballad follows, Meldau's own "At a Loss," a bit of melodramatic glissando playing that nonetheless has at its heart an interesting harmonic series of shifts in timbre, moving from a light blue to a darker, richer chromatic that digs into the blues for a stuttering turn at swing before re-entering a balladic frame. The most exciting track on the set is Coltrane's "Countdown," with its rhythmic and mode changes occurring just before the end of each interval, blurring them somewhat and making the solos belled through. This may not be as great as some of Meldau's later trio work, but it is very impressive for such an early date.By Thom Jurek

Where would jazz be without New York’s “joints’ of the 1920’s – 1950’s? If Ellington hadn’t been hired to play the Cotton Club, what direction would his orchestra have taken? Without the Royal Roost, would Parker play with Miles and Max Roach, and would Miles have had a venue to perform “Birth of the Cool” in? And, where would Monk and Coltrane have played if not at the Five Spot?

I came upon this terrific history today, “Jazz Joints Through the Ages.” Written by noted jazz historian Ashley Kahn and originally published in Jazz Times in 2006, the feature provides short biographies of many of the most important clubs in jazz music’s past. It is an incredibly entertaining read…

Jazz joints come and jazz joints go especially in New York City. From tightly packed bars downtown to spacious dinner clubs uptown, it’s a historic lineage. Much has changed over the years (Birdland’s smoky elegance in the ’50s would be impossible with Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on indoor smoking) and much has not, like set lengths, drink minimums and the apparent majority view that jazz sounds best in New York City one floor below street level (Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola notwithstanding).

One jazz rule seems immutable: Before musicians can reach those grand uptown theaters or the big festival stages, they must first make it in the clubs of New York City. They are still the proving ground. It’s been that way since the ’20s. The nightclubs that follow are celebrated less for being the most popular in their day many were not and more for accurately representing the music and spirit of the time. Often they predicted sounds and societal shifts just around the corner.

It was a challenging process selecting one from each decade. Some eras, like the ’40s when 52nd Street was in full swing, offered far too many choices: Every club on “The Street” (Three Deuces, Onyx Club) and, of course, Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem held the seeds of modern jazz. Also, to which decade does the Village Vanguard belong? It has consistently presented visionary music during its 71-year history. And what about all those great neighborhood bars in Brooklyn? The list was limited to venues with a Manhattan address. Save for one, none remain standing in their original form.

Released in 1970, a bit too late to capitalize on the Tijuana Brass at the peak of their appeal, this early hits collection compounded the error of its tardy timing by only including selections from the TJB's first five albums.

Still, since the CDs of three of the five albums are currently out of print, this can serve as a decent, if brief, overview of the development of Herb Alpert's vehicle from its clever ethnic novelty beginnings into a cosmopolitan septet that could actually bridge the yawning generation gap of the 1960s. But for a more sweeping look at the TJB, there are better, more economical packages around. By Richard S. Ginell

Born Ellen Radka Toneff on 25.06.1952, died on 21.10.1982.

Radka was a Norwegian/Bulgarian jazz composer and singer. She was born in Oslo, and was the daughter of the Bulgarian folk singer, Toni Toneff.

From 1975 unto 1980 she played in the group "Radka Toneff Quintet" with, among others, Arild Andersen and Jon Eberson.

Radka leaves us the legacy of three albums; "Winter Poem", "It don't come easy", and "Fairytales" (the last one actually released after her death).

Posthumously: "Live in Hamburg" and "Her finest moments", has been released

Her album "Fairytales" was the first Norwegian album to be digitally recorded, it also reached nr 12 in the contest "Best Norwegian album ever made".

I don't know to what extent the number 10 is significant, but it is a round number and reaching this number of Jazzings (CDs of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band) for me is, at least, a great joy.

JAZZING 10, but 18 CDs, actually, since several of them are double or triple, as is the case of this last one, which consists of three volumes. The first of them (VOL. 1), dedicated to the music of Clifford Brown, with special arrangements for the occasion, of songs that were either originals by Clifford himself or songs that he used to perform.

The other two volumes (VOL. 2 and 3) are also a sample of the different recordings we have made during this 2019, both with the entire Sant Andreu Jazz Band, or in smaller formats, and in two different spaces such as the JAZZ HOUSE (home of the young orchestra) and the JAMBOREE, a regular venue during all these years, where we have also played and recorded on many occasions.

Gloria Lynne recorded many albums for Everest in her early days, slipped away into obscurity and then in the 1990's made a comeback. An excellent singer whose style falls between bop, 1950's middle-of-the-road pop and early soul, Lynne was always capable of putting on a colorful show. Her mother was a gospel singer and Lynne started out singing in church. She had five years of concert training and in 1951 won the legendary amateur competition at the Apollo Theatre.

Lynne sang with some vocal groups, became a single and in 1958 was discovered by Raymond Scott, who at the time was a top A&R man at Everest. During her busy period with Everest (at least ten records were cut between 1958-63), Lynne had hits in "I Wish You Love" (a song she virtually made a standard) and "I'm Glad There Is You." She recorded with both orchestras and jazz combos, becoming quite popular for a period.

However, with the rise of rock and the change in the public's musical tastes, Lynne was forgotten for a time. Only a commercial record in 1975 for ABC broke the silence. But starting in the early 1980's, Gloria Lynne started working regularly again, regained some of her earlier frame and in the early 1990's recorded a couple of CDs for Muse.

Though only in his early thirties at the time of these recording sessions, pianist Jeb Patton had already firmly established himself in the jazz world. This former student of the late Sir Roland Hanna and Jimmy Heath recorded as a sideman on CDs with Heath's small groups and big bands, the Heath Brothers, while he has also performed with many other artists. His second CD features two other talented young musicians, bassist David Wong and drummer Pete Van Nostrand, who also appeared on his debut effort. Patton chose a surprising opener, a breezy setting of the neglected pianist Reuben Brown's "Billy," a driving bop piece deserving of wider recognition. The pianist modifies the usually somber bossa nova ballad "Estate" by picking up the tempo, while Van Nostrand switches to brushes for Patton's robust, swinging arrangement of the show tune "If Ever I Would Leave You." Originals include his bluesy tribute to Hanna ("Sir Roland") and the snappy "The Music Goes On." Jimmy Heath plays soprano sax in a touching duo arrangement of "Last Night When We Were Young," while Albert "Tootie" Heath takes over on drums for his brother's playful blues "Cloak and Dagger" and the pianist's sauntering, Latin-flavored "Street Song." Jeb Patton is one of the most promising jazz musicians of his generation and this CD is a fine addition to his discography. ~ Ken Dryden
