The Book of Ballads in question is the Great American Songbook, and Carmen McRae breathes new life into some of its most dog-eared pages on this wonderful session that heralded the close of her Kapp Records tenure. McRae tackles material like "When I Fall in Love," "Isn't It Romantic?" and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" with uncommon care and intelligence, summoning rich new meaning from the familiar lyrics. In her hands, the songs pulse with energy and life. Arranger Frank Hunter and a supporting trio led by pianist Don Abney also merit commendation for nuanced, evocative backings that afford McRae the necessary space to do her thing. ~Jason Ankeny

Kurt Elling celebrates a legendary legacy from outside the jazz world. 1619 Broadway – The Brill Building Project honors a locale that the London Telegraph called "the most important generator of popular songs in the Western world." Even for the ceaselessly inventive GRAMMY-winning singer-lyricist, it's a hugely unexpected step, and one guaranteed to further solidify his reputation for bold innovation and superb craftsmanship.

"Having done so many projects about my love for Chicago," Elling says, "I wanted to make something that spoke of my love for New York." The two cities define his career. Elling developed his craft in Chicago, and recorded several of his early albums there – including his debut, Close Your Eyes, which catapulted him onto the national stage and earned the first of his many GRAMMY nominations. (All told, every one of Elling's ten albums has been nominated for at least one jazz GRAMMY – a streak unequalled in GRAMMY history.)

But in fact, Elling and his family have lived in Manhattan since 2008, and 1619 Broadway – The Brill Building Project is his response to that experience.

"I didn't want to cover any of the New York songwriters jazz people usually go to: the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, all of whom I love; I wanted to reach out for something different for jazz. The vast collection of songs coming out of The Brill Building seemed like a gold mine."

Shauna grew up in Plymouth, Massachusetts, surrounded by music and singing relatives. She got her musical start at a young age in the basement of her Grandpa Murphy's house where she spent hours pounding away on a dusty, out-of-tune, upright piano. When piano playing didn't click with her, she moved on to the acoustic guitar. Frustrated, she quickly gave it up when her brother Ryan excelled at a much quicker pace. Fortunately, singing came much easier. Shauna started singing "professionally" at Sacred Heart High School in Kingston, MA. She was very active in drama and chorus, led by the "Singing Sisters," Sisters Rosalie and Rosemund. Her first big solo in chorus was *Chiquita Banana.* When she came to U. of Vermont, she longed to start a band and play at the clubs downtown. While in the library (pretending to study) she saw a sign on a bulletin board that said, "WANTED: Singer for new Acid Jazz band." She tore down the sign, called the number the next day and by the end of the week had joined the band Belizbeha. That was March of 1994. For the next 6-7 years Belizbeha toured extensively around the country and produced 2 CDs of all original material. Belizbeha shared the stage with the likes of Kool & the Gang, Gil Scott Heron, The Last Poets, De La Soul, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, and many others. After the release of their second album, "Void Where Inhibited" the band dissolved, although they still play shows every now and again. Everyone in Belizbeha went on to pursue music in his or her own individual way.

When not on the road with Belizbeha, Shauna worked part-time at the Sai-Gon Cafe in Burlington, and it was there that she hooked up with Joe Capps and Chris Peterman. She had known Joe from Belizbeha; they had recorded some songs out at Joe's studio. Shauna knew Chris through Belizbeha as well; he played saxophone on their first album and played many gigs with them. When Joe and Chris were playing at the restaurant, Shauna would sometimes get up and sing a song or two with them. Since it was so fun they decided to pursue playing some "real" gigs together. Thus, in 1997, the Shauna Antoniuc Trio was born, and they went on to play numerous gigs at jazz bars, restaurants, weddings, corporate functions, and colleges throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. They released one CD called "The Dream's On Me" in 2002 and recorded another in 2003. The second CD, after sitting on a shelf for 5 years, was released in 2008. It's called "In the Moonlight." Their third CD together, "Simple" is being released in 2011 under a new name, Shauna Anderson. Rick Norcross was a regular customer at the Sai-Gon Cafe as well, and when the singer left his western swing outfit, Rick and the Ramblers, he asked Shauna to audition for the job. She was hired for the summer 1999 tour and worked with them for 5 more summers, playing every weekend throughout Vermont. Chris Peterman also joined Rick's crew in 2001, playing with him for another year. Shauna still sits in on gigs in Vermont for both the jazz trio and the Ramblers. 2003 was a busy year for Shauna.

In February, she and husband Brandy Anderson were married at the breathtaking Marie Reine-du-Monde Cathedral in Montreal. Mother's day was truly special that year as they found out they were pregnant. In July, they left Vermont behind and moved to Sacramento, CA to be near Brandy's family. The fall brought new jobs, and on December 29th little Jula Elizabeth arrived just in time for the tax break. They crammed marriage and moving, career changes and diaper changes all into one fantastic year. When Shauna arrived in CA she knew she wanted to continue singing. She joined the musician's union and asked who she should contact for jazz. Bill Rase was the leader of one of the oldest big bands in the area, so she stopped by his recording studio and gave him a CD. Soon she was playing gigs with Bill all over the Sacramento area.  At one of Bill's gigs, Shauna met Brad Hammett, an outstanding trombone player. He asked her is she would like to join a band they were putting together. Brad has an awesome studio in Auburn, so Shauna went out there to meet Mickey Bennett, a swinging bass player, and Charlie Robinson, a fantastic jazz guitarist. They recorded a bunch of standards and started playing out at weddings, restaurants, and functions.

Shauna also joined a couple of cover bands; in 2004 she hooked up with Frenchy and The Feather River Outlaws. They covered mostly country and rock tunes and played heavily in the Marysville area. Shauna still keeps in touch with the Outlaws and plays with them sometimes. In the summer of 2006, Shauna joined another cover band, Stealin' Time. They play occasional gigs as well. Shauna took a hiatus from singing as she and Brandy had two more little girls, one right after the other; in May of 2006 Mary-Margaret Christine arrived, and right on her coat tails was Evamarie Dorothy, born a year and 2 days later. Baby #4 -- another girl -- arrived on January 1st, 2009. Cecilia Juanita is named after the patron saint of musicians, St. Cecilia! Recently, Shauna returned to Vermont to record an album of some of her favorite pop and jazz songs with Joe and Chris and other musicians she used to work with. This album, Simple, is made up of songs that remind her of the simple blessings in our lives. In times that are rough - indeed, in ALL times - it is good to remember what really matters. Shauna hopes to make the world just a little more beautiful with these songs!  http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/shaunaanderson

Shannon Butcher (Vocals) with Rebecca Hennessy (Trumpet) perform the Chet Baker Songbook; saluting one of the Jazz world’s most popular male vocalists and horn players. In their first collaboration together, these two celebrated ladies of the Toronto jazz scene will perform a broad range of material spanning the breadth of Chet Baker’s career, with a focus on his vocal repertoire.  Selections will include works from his later period such as Elvis Costello’s “Almost Blue” along with the classic standards “I Fall In Love Too Easily”, “My Funny Valentine”, “It Could Happen To You”, “Let’s Get Lost” and more!Accompanied by an outstanding Piano, Bass and Drum trio (Mark Kieswetter, Ross MacIntyre and Maxwell Roach), this duo who are known for exploring the “new” come together to explore the inspiration of a jazz icon. Shannon Butcher is a well-loved vocalist in the Canadian jazz scene who achieves steady jazz radio play across the country. She has built her career by creating her own jazz songbook, filled with a unique repertoire of self-composed material and distinctive jazz interpretations of recent pop music. Canadian jazz radio has heartily embraced Shannon’s repertoire as presented on her two solo albums, 2008’s “Words We Both Could say” and 2010’s “Little Hearts”, (albums that contain a combined total of only three traditional jazz interpretations out of a total of 21 tracks), as well as on 2011’s duo album with Ross MacIntyre; “How Sweet It Is” (where only one of eleven tracks is considered a Jazz “Standard”.) Her albums have consistently reached the Top-Ten national jazz airplay charts, and her live performances in her home town of Toronto, as well as at Canadian Jazz festivals and regional theatres (such as The Rose Theatre in Brampton, Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre and the Richmond Hill Centre for the Arts) never fail to charm a crowd.

Rebecca Hennessy (Trumpet) is a sought-after player in the Canadian jazz scene, as well as the indie music scene (where she works with artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Owen Pallett, Broken Social Scene, Feist and Sara Slean).  She is most well known for her work as member of the chamber-jazz quartet “Hobson’s Choice” – who have released two full length CDs and one EP since 2008.  As with her other jazz projects, Rebecca’s focus with Hobson’s Choice has been on original compositions and improvised music. As Shakura S’Aida wrote recently about Rebecca, “she is one seriously talented player, who plays with a sensitivity that never leaves strength behind.”

The sassy sultry style of Ingrid Lucia will ignite your heart as you listen to her classic seductive melodies on her latest CD, St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.   This beautiful songstress brings a catalog of classic love songs back to life with a spin of local jazz flavor in favorites like “You Made Me Love You” and “That Old Black Magic.”  Lucia also pays homage to the great Louis Armstrong with her unforgettable versions of “La Vie En Rose” which includes a ballad and a sweet up tempo contemporary jazz version.  Throughout the CD, Victor Atkin's piano work is purely New Orleans and compliments Lucia’s sultry vocals.  This CD captures the mystical essence of Lucia’s live performances, but at the same time makes the listener long to see her perform in person.   The songs are put together beautifully with great precision and balance when it comes to the jazz solos either by bass or saxophone, in contrast to Lucia’s sweet enchanting voice.  Lucia has the sound of a beautiful gypsy style cabaret singer who’s bound for stardom. This CD is bound to be a romantic classic, perfect for special evenings together with that special someone or just reminiscing over the classic era of music Lucia sings from. ~ Sheri McKee  http://www.whereyat.com/neworleans/article-921-july-cd-reviews.html

Maria Luiza de Arruda Botelho Pereira de Magalhães (São Paulo, August 29, 1992) is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and musician. Mallu first came to notice through her MySpace page and became known for both her own songs and those of renowned artists. She found herself gracing the covers of major newspapers such as Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo and Jornal do Brasil, and was featured in Rolling Stone, Istoé, Época among others. In just two years of her career, she became the subject of countless blogs, packed shows, attracted critical attention, and had more than 4 million hits on her MySpace page. In 2008 she released her first eponymous album and in 2009 she released her second album, also self-titled.

Review:
There’s no immediate tipoff that Mallu Magalhães is Brazilian on her United States debut album, “Highly Sensitive.” Ms. Magalhães, who is 21, sings the opening songs in American-accented English, casually slurring words and not worrying unduly about exact pitch. Most of her music is 1960’s-loving indie rock that can lean toward folk-pop or make room for a distorted lead guitar, and she has a gift for writing lightheartedly affectionate ditties with a personal skew. “I’m messy but I’m totally yours/My clumsy hands will hold you,” she promises in “Lonely.”

So when Ms. Magalhães switches to Portuguese in the opening verse of “Highly Sensitive” — a tune that lands somewhere between skiffle and the Strokes — an American listener’s first reaction might well be a double take: What’d she say?

“Highly Sensitive” is actually a compilation from the three albums she released in Brazil in 2008, 2009 and 2011, mostly from her 2011 album, “Pitanga.” Even as a teenager, she showed a sensibility of her own: winsome, sly, glancing northward.

Her debut, released when she was 16, was produced by Mario Caldato Jr., a Brazilian-American who has worked with Beck and the Beastie Boys, and it included songs in both English and Portuguese. The producers on her next two albums, Kassin (who emerged from the collective called the Plus 2s) and Marcelo Camelo, kept her music lean and playful. “In the Morning,” from 2011, accompanies her sleepy singsong with little more than plinking piano, an occasional glockenspiel, a few buzzing guitar notes and what sounds like the ratcheting of a windup toy.

Of course, Ms. Magalhães’s knowing nonchalance also eases nicely into bossa nova, low-key samba or retro Brazilian pop when she sings in Portuguese. Although she’s a star in Brazil, she sounds as if she’s singing just to herself, and maybe a friend. It makes her a charmer.

Reflections is jazz vocalist Kendra Shank's second CD for the Jazz Focus label and it is one that speaks for itself. The vocalist, joined by pianist Frank Kimbrough, Dean Johnson on bass, and Tony Moreno on drums and percussion, interprets ten songs that compliment her excellent vocal experimentation. Since her selection as a Talent Deserving Wider Recognition by the Downbeat International Critics' Poll in 1999, Kendra Shank has continued to feature her highly lauded impressionistic approach and here she indulges her listeners on such rare gems as Duke Ellington's "Reflections," and international favorites such as "Let It Be." Her sensuous phrasing on "This Is New" is as innovative and alluring as her guitar playing on "The Silence of the Candle." Both artistic traits continue to endear her to adult, contemporary, and folk audiences around the world and have evolved beautifully since her first CD on Mapleshade, Afterglow. ~ Paula Edelstein

Recorded at Acoustic Studios, Brooklyn, New York on April 28 and 29, 2000. Includes liner notes by Terry Teachout.

Twin-Cities-spawned ace chanteuse Sony Holland is back at it, keeping the airwaves safe for smooth, cool jazz ballads with her new album Sanssouci (Van Ness Records), following the brilliant Out of This World (Van Ness Records) from 2009.  Holland is the quintessential artist, honoring an ageless genre while marking her mark on it. Her calling cards are flawless phrasing, sultry tonality, and bright energy. Her music allures. With the same, rich textures, for instance, Lani Hall used to infuse Sergio Mendez & Brazil '66 with subtle grace and hypnotic sensuality. Holland has that kind of commanding presence, that kind of irresistible artistry. That kind of heat.

She's joined on Sanssouci by Jerry Holland (guitar), David Hughes (bass), Kendall Kay (percussion), Robbie Kondor (keys), and Wolf Sebastian (cello), a combo that fits the velvet vocalist like a proverbial glove. The boys provide excellent, flowing accompaniment that showcases Holland to best possible effect. She is seamless. Together, Sony Holland and her band make it all seem effortless, make magic like it's nothing, bring some pretty marvelous stuff.  Holland's take on the old standard "My Foolish Heart" is a fine opener for Sanssouci, signing in with her trademark style. She holds down a breezy, lilting groove. Gleaming highs. Rich low tones. In between she fairly dances on air. It's a recurring quality throughout the album. "Too Many Beautiful Girls," by Jerry Holland, is innovative, a doo-wop melody that swerves into samba and winds up a very smoky affair.

The Rodgers and Hart chestnut "My Romance" gets a refreshing going over, soft and laid back. Holland's singing is superb. Fluid. In fact, enchanting. "Those Dancing Days Are Gone" blends reggae and jazz to a tantalizing T.  Out of This World, aptly titled, captures cool jazz at its finest. On standards like "Old Devil Moon" and "I've Got You Under My Skin," and on Jerry Holland originals "It's An Understatement," "I'll Lead The Way," and "By The Sea." On everything, the band swings, and Sony Holland sings like a dream. This album is a splendid follow-up improving, as it were, on perfection. Holland broadens her textures, gets a little more sinewy and, in general, intrigues beyond belief. All said, with Sanssouci, Sony Holland continues establishing herself as a siren of the first order.

The name Dozier is no stranger to the music industry and Paulette Dozier continues the legacy bringing her own unique style to the songs she interprets. Paulette is keenly drawn to nostalgic songs of the 40s, and with contemporary rhythms to revitalize the sound, new flavor is added to all of her tunes taken from the golden era.

Paulette's contribution to producing original music has always been as a lyricist. When writing in collaboration with her pianist, Mike Levine, Paulette finds inspiration through his skillful style of playing reminiscent of legendary greats like Earl Hines. Levine's old school technique brings out the best in her, and knowing how much she enjoys creating new riffs, he gives her the measures to express herself. Mike dresses their songs with a hint of soul, a touch of gospel and lots of jazz while Paulette draws on her romantic experiences to define the essence of their tunes. Her fondness for 40s music and his playing style make a winning combination for rejuvenating timeless classics and creating songs destined to become classics.

Dozier has been singing professionally since the age of 23 and she feels that venue variety is one of the keys to building a great performer. What makes her the engrossing entertainer that she is is her experience having performed in a range of venues including those from the small, over crowded, smokey nightclub where brushing up against an overly enthusiastic spectator was expected; to forums that house 20,000 screaming fans like El Poliedro de Caracas. Either place, she commands the stage and has always been highly appreciated by those who see her in action.

This eye-catching jazz stylist and scat singer is quite versatile in the talent arena. She's also an actress, model and voiceover performer. Yet, it doesn't matter if she's contracted for a role in a theater musical, hired to lead a flamboyant revue or simply relaxing in a laid back jam session with a musician like guitarist Paco de Lucia, her signature jazz style accompanies her.

Paulette Dozier is a grand performer who builds upon an old school foundation with drive, and she is definitely an act not to be missed.  http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/paulettedozier

Throughout his long career, Bob Wilber has done a lot to keep classic jazz alive. A bit misplaced (most jazz players of his generation were much more interested in bop and hard bop), Wilber (along with Kenny Davern, Ralph Sutton, and Dick Wellstood) was one of the few in his age group to stick to pre-bop music. In high school he formed a band that included Wellstood, and as a teenager he sat in at Jimmy Ryan's club in New York. Early on he became Sidney Bechet's protégé and led his own young group, the Wildcats (with whom he made his recording debut). The close association with the dominant Bechet led to a bit of a personality crisis in the 1950s as Wilber sought to find his own voice. He studied with Lennie Tristano and formed the Six, a group that tried to modernize early jazz. When that ended, he played Dixieland with Eddie Condon, and in 1957 joined Bobby Hackett's band for a year. Wilber freelanced throughout the 1960s, in 1968 became a founding member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band, and in 1973 he formed Soprano Summit with Kenny Davern, one of the top swing-oriented groups of the decade. A few years later the band broke up and Wilber teamed up with his wife, singer Pug Horton, in Bechet Legacy (which also featured either Glenn Zottola or Randy Sandke on trumpet).

In addition, Bob Wilber has worked with the New York Jazz Repertory Company, released music on his own Bodeswell label, wrote the authentic soundtrack to the movie The Cotton Club (1984), in 1988 led a band at Carnegie Hall to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Benny Goodman's famous concert, and authored his frank memoirs, Music Was Not Enough. Influenced on soprano, clarinet, and alto by respectively Bechet, Goodman, and Johnny Hodges, Wilber has long had his own sound on each of his instruments. He recorded frequently through the years for many labels, including Arbors in the '90s and 2000s. ~Bio

2013 International Women in Jazz "Youth in Action" award winner, Leonieke Scheuble:

Leonieke (phonetically pronounced “lay-o-nee-ka”) started to play piano after being inspired by Ray Charles through the 2004 biographical film, “Ray”.
At the age of 7, she began studies with Jazz pianist, Steve Ash.

As her love of Jazz, Soul and Gospel motivate her to develop her musical skills, Leonieke has been afforded some wonderful opportunities at a very young age.

Among them, would be winning the 2013 International Women in Jazz “Youth in Action” Award -eligible to female jazz musicians under 18 years of age presented in performance at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan (The Jazz Church).

A two-time featured artist at The Watchung Arts Center, Leonieke was also featured at the 2012 FusionFest, and has performed in Jazz Vespers along with Steve Turre, Tim Ries and Bill Crow.
She is often invited to sit in at various New York City Jazz Clubs.

In July of 2012, Dr. Lonnie Smith met Leonieke and watched a youtube of her performing on piano. After learning that she had an interest in jazz organ, he arranged for a Hammond organ to be delivered to her as a gift. Earlier that year, Bob Belden, (former A&R Blue Note records) introduced her to Herbie Hancock and has since become a mentor, guiding her mainly through recordings. Radio station WBGO Jazz 88.3FM featured Leonieke in interview along with trombonist Coleman Hughes in an hour long special entitled, “The Future of Jazz (10/2/13).

On October 13 2013, she recorded her debut CD engineered by Trustees Award Grammy winner, Rudy Van Gelder, widely recognized as one of the most important engineers in music history. She returned to his studio again on November 17th and was joined by Jazz drumming legend, Jimmy Cobb.

Leonieke aspires to continually grow musically, composing more of her own music.

This recording, entitled "debut", features Leonieke on both the Hammond B-3 organ and a Steinway concert grand piano. She is joined by Tim Givens on double bass and her sister Natasha Scheuble on vocals. Jimmy Cobb and her dad, Nick Scheuble share the drum responsibiliies. It is recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and his assistant Maureen Sickler and is produced by the gifted composer/pianist Cecilia Coleman.

Sometimes it all comes together-the perfect intersection of performer and material. This is one of those junctures: the elegance of George Gershwin's music; a spare, refined interpretation by Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard.

Prudence has sung Gershwin material from time to time, but it wasn't until she heard pianist Chouinard tackle the repertoire-his singular phrasing and ability to evoke the spirit of an era-that she realized she was hooked. On the other hand, Dan took Gershwin's music to heart when he was barely into his teens, after a piano teacher with good taste and high hopes assigned "Rhapsody in Blue."

Now Johnson and Chouinard give Gershwin fitting tribute with an exquisite new recording project-- 'S Gershwin--to be released on the Sleeper label. With a no-frills attitude and an unadorned grace that's absolutely seductive, Prudence and Dan offer up favorites-complete with their seldom-heard verses-from one of the most extraordinary composers of the 20th century. The list includes "Love Walked In," "How Long Has This Been Going On," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "They All Laughed" and "Love is Here to Stay." And their take on selections such as "My Man's Gone Now" and "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'" approaches Porgy and Bess from an entirely fresh angle.

'S wonderful, 's marvelous, 'S Gershwin.

Marvin Gaye's Number 1's, like the other Number 1's discs issued by Universal Music Distribution during early 2007, is an attractive package that would nonetheless have trouble surviving a minor spill or even a swift breeze. The disc sits in biodegradable foam, which is protected by a wraparound cardboard sleeve. In fact, the packaging might be lighter than the disc itself. At any rate, there's nothing to complain about when it comes to the contents of the disc: 13 number one hits, released between 1965 and 1982 (credit Universal for licensing "Sexual Healing" from Sony BMG), along with three bonus cuts that stalled at number two. Of course, Gaye's catalog goes fathoms deeper than the chart-toppers, but this makes a fine introduction. ~Andy Kellman
