In a post-millennium music market, most teen pop personalities are compared to Miley Cyrus before they are compared to Celine Dion. However, Montreal's Nikki Yanofsky's mastered range and voice certainly liken her more to the latter: not to say that she is classic or irrelevant, simply that she has a wicked talent with a mature charisma well beyond her years. This is proven triumphantly on Ella...Of Thee I Swing, a debut that doesn't try to dominate pop radio waves with bubblegum mush, rather one that pays tribute to the classic jazz numbers which have ultimately inspired the cultured teen. Ella is more than just a standard tribute album: it's an 18-track piece of musical magic. The album stands out because of Yanofsky's covers of more mainstream numbers. Few can ever cover original tracks like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "The Way You Look Tonight," or "At Last" with such awe-inspiring vocals. However, Yanofsky proves that at 15 years old, she can tackle these great numbers effortlessly. Ella...Of Thee I Swing wont have you bopping your head in your car like 95-percent of teen pop stars' music does, but it will make you feel like you are listening to a genuinely fantastic collection of brilliant pop and jazz music, sung through the body of an impressive young talent who, bar none, stands as the best pop voice under 20 in the post-millennium music scene to date. ~ Matthew Chisling

The arrangements by Tommy Newsom for strings, brass, and woodwinds may be a bit sweet and the 13 performances (which on the CD reissue include a previously unreleased take of "Engano") may be overly concise (often under three minutes), but the resulting music is strangely pleasing. Acoustic guitarist Charlie Byrd always had a strong affinity for Brazilian jazz, and he sticks exclusively to Antonio Carlos Jobim songs (including "Só Danço Samba," "Corcovado," "Dindi," and "The Girl from Ipanema") during this tasteful and melodic effort. Truly beautiful music. ~ Scott Yanow

For the purist who wants to know what all the excitement is about Esperanza Spalding, they can skip directly to track 11 "If That's True" of her sophomore album Esperanza, where she works out on the acoustic bass in an all-out jam with Donald Harrison on alto saxophone and Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet. It flat-out smokes, and showcases the Berklee-trained bassist as potentially one of the more promising young talents in jazz. First though, she's going to have to decide whether she's a bassist who sings, or a singer who plays bass. She may choose to be both, but while Spalding is a capable vocalist, she has a long way to go before she becomes an exceptional one. As a bassist, she's much closer. As the principal musician, songwriter, composer and producer, Esperanza Spalding might have been better served to have an executive producer supervising. There is a lot of ground covered here; and while she's brimming with ideas, this album is crying out for some judicious editing. You can hear the joy and passion of this 23-year-old talent, and you certainly can't criticize her for enthusiasm. The trouble is Spalding doesn't know when to quit when she's ahead. Clocking in at over an hour in length, she doesn't really have enough first-rate material to justify the running time. Some of the songs go on too long, meander tediously and become a bit repetitious. Spalding's intentions never seem less than a willingness to please and demonstrate her considerable chops, but she doesn't yet know that more isn't always better.

Sometimes more is just more, and a little restraint could have boosted Esperanza from "pretty good" to "great." Spalding's vocals are best when she's scatting and freestyling on "I Adore You" and "Cuerpo Y Alma," with the latter built around Leo Genovese's piano, Otis Brown's drums and her bass. Singing in Portuguese without lyrics serves Spalding well, because while her singing is pretty and occasionally even soars, her range is limited and some of the lyrics are a bit humdrum. On the outstanding "Mela," Spalding allows Akinmusire's trumpet to take the lead as she dutifully holds the bottom down and drummer Horacio Hernandez madly pounds the hell out of his kit. This track and "If That's True" are the strongest indicators of how "bad as she wanna be" Spalding is when she plays within the dynamics of the group and is not the star attraction. Blessed with talent, youth, training and outrageously good looks, Spalding is a young woman ready to make some noise, and is here to stay in the jazz world. If she can just check some of her excesses and play to her strengths, she's going to be making more and better music for a long time to come. ~ Jeff Winbush   http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=29444#.Uy25B4UqPro

The Chad Rager Modern Big Band - In The Club... Live

(6:16) 10. Chicklets
(7:09) 11. Whipping Post

The title of this album is only half right. Chad Rager's Ohio-based aggregation may be modern, but it isn't big. There are only seven players, with one more added for "Chicklets" which keeps it out of the big-band category, even though on occasions it sounds as if some ringers have been added. Rager's Louis Bellson-influenced drums are the engine that propels and drives the band down a road of progressive, contemporary arrangements that combine ingredients of jazz, swing, and rock. Where Rager is the catapult, Chris Karlic's baritone sax and Kurt Felgamacher's electric bass are the ammunition that feeds the musical cannon. A bari sax in the lead gives the band a unique sound. "Squib Cakes" exposes Ragers's rock roots with licks provided by Brooke Hopkins' keyboards, making this the wildest ride on the album.

There are benefits to a smaller than usual "big band" as there is little conflict in handing out solo time with plenty for everybody. Karlic's ever present baritone is especially rough, ready, and guttural on Sammy Nestico's "The Heats On." Rager takes a my-hands-are-so-fast-you-can-hardly-see-them solo on "St. Bernard," dedicated to a major influence on the drummer, tap dancer Steve Condos. This track is also the vehicle for an imaginative solo by Steve Enos. "Smile" is an opportunity for everyone to relax with a traditional big-band swing arrangement with the plunger-muted trombone of Pat Haleran taking the lead. This live performance creates an infectious mood of excitement and enthusiasm with the audience. Nonetheless, more needs to be heard from this group before a definitive conclusion on their capabilities can be made. But if this album is any indication, the outlook is promising. ~ Dave Nathan   http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-the-clublive-mw0000033383

Although somewhat obscure, Delbert Bump is a fine organist in the tradition of Jimmy Smith. Organ-Ization music is bluesy and swinging style is soulful and perfectly suited to this set of mostly basic originals. Organ-Ization songs Guitarist Steve Homan offers a contrasting solo voice and some solid rhythm playing while drummer Babtunde keeps the proceedings swinging with solid forward momentum. The music is a bit derivative and perhaps predictable, but it is enjoyable overall and easily recommended to fans of Jimmy Smith and the grooving jazz organists of the 1960s.

Michael is an award-winning composer, orchestrator and multi-instrumentalist. His credits include performing, writing and producing music for film and TV, as well as working with some of the biggest names in pop music.

Drawing on a lifetime s experience of working as sideman to some of the great names of soul jazz and as a composer for film and TV, Michael J McEvoy has finally found his way home to his love of jazz. These two strands to his career have meant he has been able to call upon the services of a stellar cast of UK jazz musicians to play a series of original pieces that spread their wings beyond the normal forms and references found on many jazz releases. The sketches at the root of these compositions have grown in mood and tone, becoming immensely satisfying on the ear whilst retaining a solid groove. It may have been a long way home, but McEvoy has arrived.

Review:
This has got instant appeal. And it s over far too soon. With a melodic 1970s vibe to start with on the title track opener and Gerard Presencer s bluesy horn commentary over a strong rhythm section of pianist McEvoy joined by Empirical bassist Tom Farmer and the Golden trio s James Maddren this is the former musical director of Steve Winwood s time to shine. --Stephen Graham, Marlbank

It s certainly one to put you in the right mood before a big night on the town. --Selwyn Harris, Jazzwise

4 Stars This is an exciting and varied album, the best of British modern jazz, with thanks to the crowd-funding which helped to pay for it. --Ron Burnnett, The York Press

The UK’s finest interpreter of song, Barb Jungr returns to the songs of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen with the release of Hard Rain. Oft referred to as “the politicised chansonnier” and cited as one of the world’s best performers of Dylan’s material, Barb turns to six of his most politically hard-hitting songs along with five of Leonard Cohen’s most impassioned songs of conscience. Barb’s selection for Hard Rain reflects her despair with the political times that we live in and she has deliberately chosen songs that resonate as strongly today as they did when they were originally written: “Blowin’ In The Wind” is now 51 years old and its sentiments are as relevant today as they ever were. The album comes complete with insightful liner notes by writer Liz Thomson, who as Elizabeth Thomson prepared “the director’s cut” of No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan (2014). She was also the co-editor of The Dylan Companion. As a young journalist, her first ever interview was with Leonard Cohen. All of the arrangements on the album are by Barb and her long-standing collaborator and accompanist, the pianist Simon Wallace, who also produced the album. In addition to Simon (piano, Hammond organ and synthesizers), Barb is also joined by Neville Malcom on bass (with Steve Watts providing bass on tracks 1,3,8 and 10); Gary Hammond (percussion); Clive Bell (Shakahachi) and Richard Olatunde Baker on talking drum and additional percussion. Together with Barb, they inject new life and energy into each song.

In the past few years singer Sarah Moule has established a rapidly growing reputation as one of Britain's most exciting new jazz vocal talents. Her latest cd, 'A Lazy Kind Of Love' (Red Ram Records RAM001) released on 23rd June 2008, marks a new direction in her choice of material, including songs from unusual sources such as Julie Burchill, Clive James/Pete Atkin and Madonna's brother-in-law, composer and producer, Joe Henry, as well as her ongoing musical relationship with Landesman and Wallace. Developing from her previous work, 'A Lazy Kind Of Love' shows a new-found depth and character in her vocal approach and spotlights Sarah's interpretations, complementing them with exceptional playing from her regular trio, Simon Wallace, Mark Hodgson and Paul Robinson, and guests Alec Dankworth, Mike Outram, Alan Barnes, Paul Clarvis and Pete Atkin. Sarah's previous recordings include her highly acclaimed debut CD It's A Nice Thought (Linn records AKD192, Sept 2002) - a collection of new songs by lyricist Fran Landesman and composer Simon Wallace (”one of the finest songwriting partnerships alive” The Observer). The songs are literate, often witty and ruthlessly honest about human foibles, strengths and frailties, and they lend themselves to Moule's emotionally direct vocal style.

Her 2nd album, Something's Gotta Give (Linn Records AKD239, Nov 2004) married further new material by Landesman/Wallace with classic songs by one of the greatest of the American Songbook lyricists, Johnny Mercer. Born into a large catholic family on the south coast of England, after university Sarah soon traded the refined atmosphere of Bloomsbury publishers Jonathan Cape for extensive travels in numerous steamy tropical locations. On returning to London in the early 1990s she met jazz singer Claire Martin who introduced her to pianist and composer Simon Wallace who had himself recently returned to London after several years writing for the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and touring with the equally steamy Lindsay Kemp Company. “As soon as Simon played me the songs he'd been writing with Fran I knew I wanted to sing them. They really touched me, musically and lyrically, as they seemed to be about how we live today and the emotional conflicts we all have to deal with. I immediately started singing them on the gigs I was doing in Soho and haven't stopped since. I've always felt that it's important to include new repertoire in what I'm doing and mix up a wide range of musical influences, as well as taking inspiration from the past, because I want the music I'm doing to be forward looking.” At the same time Sarah began to explore the music of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington along with the late-night lifestyle of the London jazz musician while continuing her vocal studies with English National Opera soloist Kenneth Woollam.

She soon established a solid reputation for herself on the London jazz scene singing regularly at the 606 Club, The Vortex, Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Pizza On The Park and guesting at Ronnie Scott's Club. She has performed with many stalwarts of British jazz including: Ian Shaw, Claire Martin, Iain Ballamy, Tim Whitehead, Tim Garland, Steve Waterman and John Critishinson with whom she toured the Mediterranean with 'A Tribute To Ronnie Scott', performing opposite the legendary bebop duo Jackie & Roy. She was featured vocalist with The John Wilson Orchestra throughout the 1990s, performing extensively with them, including doing a concert for HM the Queen at the Royal College Of Music and recording their eponymous debut cd, 'This Is The John Wilson Orchestra'. Her television credits include The Paul O'Grady Show, Lenny Henry in Pieces and The Ben Elton Show. She is also currently featured vocalist with bandleader John C. Williams' Rockin' In Rhythm septet, specialising in the songs of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and performed with them at St David's Hall, Cardiff in July 2002 for the Welsh Proms. That year she and the group also premiered a suite of newly commissioned pieces by John Mayer, Barbara Thompson, Nikki Iles, Simon Wallace and Dick Walters at Leasowes Bank Arts Festival in Shropshire. Sarah performs in jazz clubs, theatres and festivals throughout the UK.

"Canada's Sweetheart of Swing" sings the traditional hot jazz of the 1920s, 30s and 40s making the music of the past captivatingly present, "possessed by the coltish spirit of a young Mildred Bailey or Ella Fitzgerald".

The Montreal Gazette writes, “In Alex Pangman's musical world, hot tunes flow like bathtub gin in a back-alley speakeasy. She roars through a repertoire of vintage swing and blues, possessed by the coltish spirit of a young Mildred Bailey or Ella Fitzgerald. There are champagne bubbles in Pangman's voice as she growls, sighs and wears her heart on her sleeve. There's a lot of nudging and winking with today's neo-trad jazz stylists. Not Pangman. She plays it straight and she plays for keeps."

Known as “Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing”, here is a lively set by Alex Pangman and her band of lions, The Alleycats. Recorded live by Canada's National Broadcaster the CBC and in front of an enthusiastic Montreal audience, this disc features live versions of songs from her previous studio recordings, plus a CD-ROM extra featuring her two music videos of Melancholy Lullaby and One Night in Monte Carlo. A must have album! (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/alexpangman).

Henry Mancini was easily one of the greatest composers for film soundtracks, so putting together a collection of 17 songs nominated for various awards (Grammy, Golden Globe, or Academy Awards) was easy. But finding the proper mix of musicians was important. His daughter, Monica Mancini, is a talented singer in her own right, so she was an obvious choice. And it was only natural to invite tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson to reprise his most famous solo in "The Pink Panther Theme," which he recorded with Mancini for the original soundtrack. For the most part, Mancini's arrangements are utilized, but there are some twists. Stevie Wonder is featured on harmonica with the vocal group Take 6 in the pretty ballad "Moon River," while organist Joey DeFrancesco shines in the breezy "Mr. Lucky." But it is Monica Mancini who makes the biggest impression (along with her father's music, of course). Her sensual rendition of "Moment to Moment," and her lightly swinging duet with singer Kenny Rankin of "Dreamsville," both of which are complemented by Tom Scott's superb alto sax, make it apparent that she inherited her father's musical genes. Among the several arrangements contributed by Patrick Williams, his gorgeous chart for Monica of "Dear Heart" features the singer backed mostly by George Doering's sensitive acoustic guitar. As Donald Fagen of Steely Dan puts it in his brief note to the CD: "All bow before the High Priest of Hollywood Cool!" In other words, fans of Henry Mancini should snap up this rewarding CD right away. ~ Ken Dryden   http://www.allmusic.com/album/ultimate-mancini-mw0000696830.

It seems that one need only bat an eyelash to miss out on some of the heavy young musicians that are coming down the pike, let alone the ones who've become pretty well-established. A case in point is a young trumpeter / producer / rapper / educator Dontae Winslow. Though he appeared on recordings by Hugh Ragin's Trumpet Ensemble (Fanfare and Fiesta, Justin Time, 2001) and Roy Hargrove & the RH Factor (Hard Groove, Verve Records, 2003) over a decade ago, Enter the Dynasty is only Winslow's fourth album as a leader. In the meantime, the Baltimore native accumulated an impressive array of high-profile performing, recording and producing credits in the hip-hop and R&B arena with artists such as Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, D'Angelo, Jay-Z, Jill Scott, and a host of others. A graduate of the Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory, Winslow was a semi-finalist in the 1997 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition, and won the prestigious Peabody Young Maestro Award in 2013.

Tempered, perhaps, by the experience of playing in front of huge audiences on a routine basis, Winslow's playing is completely assured and bold. Liberally incorporating Gospel, fusion, R&B, and funk influences, Winslow's composing and quick-witted trumpet playing throughout Enter The Dynasty nevertheless belies a continued immersion in jazz, both modern and traditional. Instead of spreading his considerable talents too thin, the dizzying stylistic variety here demonstrates that Winslow can thrive creatively in pretty much any musical setting. As a producer, he demonstrates the ability to sculpt these diverse tracks into a remarkably unified artistic statement. The veritable army of musicians featured on Enter The Dynasty represent a Who's Who of the extraordinary young musical talents circulating through the hip-hop and pop worlds. Winslow's also corralled a clutch of very impressive ringers from the jazz world for this project, including Hargrove, Chick Corea, Antonio Hart, Questlove , and Kirk Whalum to name just a few.

Throughout Enter The Dynasty, Winslow artfully balances the more challenging aspects of his music with more easygoing elements that are sure to appeal to a wider audience. Nevertheless, there is a surprisingly large amount of substantial and uncompromising jazz here. "Baltimore Crabcakes" is a funk tune from a time before the advent of slap bass and wah-wah guitar. The funk here is the bluesy, Gospel- infused, grits-and-gravy sound of Jimmy Smith, Horace Silver, and Lou Donaldson; the perfect vehicle for Winslow and Whalum to strut their soulful stuff. Whalum's also aboard for "Kings," a sweet slice of funky-but-sophisticated fusion a la Snarky Puppy enlivened by Spanky McCurdy's amazing drumming. The fusion envelope gets pushed hard on "Blaxploitation," a phantasmagorical stew of wailing, hard-hitting rock, jazz, and funk set off by Winslow's breathless no-nonsense rapping and Mashica Winslow's over-the-top operatic vocals. The only other artist I can compare this crazily intense and beautiful track to is Stanton Davis' Ghetto Mysticism. On the other hand, "Chrysalis" is sweet, easygoing funky-fusion jam with more impressive drumming (this time courtesy of Brian Frasier- Moore) framing thoughtful solos by Winslow and Chick Corea. On the gentler side of things, the album's ballads explore different aspects of things soft and downtempo. "He Is" is a lovely inspirational ballad, while "Red Lingerie"-featuring an alluring, sensual vocal by Mashica-uses the ballad form to muse on a completely different side of life. "Mashica & Jedi," dedicated to Winslow's wife and son, is sweet and direct with a sparse string backing. "Dontae's Inferno," which starts out as a rhapsodic acoustic ballad, is a complex modern jazz piece that edges into high-energy terrains during impressive solos by Winslow, pianist Miro Sprague, and tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III. Pianist Sam Barsh and bassist Edwin Livingston join Winslow on "2304 West North Avenue" in a tough little jazz trio that gives the leader a chance to really stretch out. As a trumpet soloist, the classically-trained Winslow is definitely in the Wynton Marsalis / Terence Blanchard lineage, though his playing has an appealingly emotive rawness missing from a lot of 21st Century jazz. A highly technical and proficient player, his solos are full of unexpected and dramatic trills, flutters, rips and partially- valved slurs.

Hip-hop influences figure into the album's closing tracks. "Summer Cookout" is an unpretentious slice of pure fun; Winslow 's wah-wah trumpet converses with Hargrove's flugelhorn over gospel-saturated organ, wordless vocals and Questlove's shambling good-time drums. "Drinks on Me" summons up a harder-hitting Funkadelic-inspired party vibe replete with screaming guitars, subsonic bass and masses of synth burbling up beneath solos by Hargrove and Winslow. Though it's not his debut album, Enter the Dynasty captures the excitement and fire of an unusually accomplished young artist's first release. This is a truly auspicious album that covers a lot of stylistic ground in a creative and personal manner, while establishing Dontae Winslow as a name to look out for in the jazz world. ~Dave Wayne

Jolie Goodnight is a creative tour-de-force, an international jazz performer in love with all things decadent and delightful. Hailing back to the days of glitz and glamour, Jolie Goodnight has dazzled audiences around the US with steamy fan dances and sensational jazz singing. Although she is hailed as a staggering jazz singer, Goodnight is well known for her dirty blues tunes and surprising audiences with a larger than life voice, a voice that’s been said to “drip from her mouth like sweet molasses.”

Daughter of the legendary producer Joe Gracey and singer song-writer Kimmie Rhodes, Goodnight was born in Austin, Texas into a world-wide showbiz life. She began her career as an actress, performing in pieces including “Footloose,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “The Way of the World,” “Small Town Girl,” “Hillbilly Heaven,” and “Parade.” A ravishing member of the illustrious Jigglewatts Burlesque Revue, it’s no surprise that this sultry red-head was awarded “Best Tease” and “Audience Choice” at the Texas Burlesque Festival and is the 2012 2nd runner up for Miss Viva Las Vegas.

In love with the beauty of another era, she pursued a career as a pin up model, beginning in Rockabilly Magazine and later featuring in Retro Lovely, Pin Curl Magazine, Bachelor Pad, Pin Up Playing Cards, Texas Women with Texas Tattoos, and The Austin Post.

Currently, Jolie croons with her jazz band, performs burlesque as a member of the Jigglewatts, and will soon release her debut November 22nd.

18. Celebration For A Grey Day (1965 Newport Folk Festival) (7:49)
19. Shady Grove (Jean Ritchie) (1965 Newport Folk Festival) (2:06)

This is a straightforward three-CD set of the Fariñas' Vanguard recordings, each disc containing one of their three albums: Celebrations for a Grey Day, Reflections in a Crystal Wind, and the posthumous outtakes collection Memories. For Richard & Mimi Fariña fans who already have all of those albums, the chief interest lies in the seven previously unreleased bonus tracks that have been added to the Memories disc, all of them taken from their appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Those songs, in which the duo played in an acoustic setup with some help from onstage guests (including Bruce Langhorne and Fritz Richmond), are enjoyable but not essential, particularly as the sound quality isn't that great. The new additions, however, make live versions of some their best songs available, among them "The Bold Marauder" (the best of the live cuts), "Sell-Out Agitation Waltz," "Pack Up Your Sorrows" (with Peter Yarrow), and "Celebration for a Grey Day"; Jean Ritchie accompanies them on "Shady Grove" (which is sometimes nearly drowned out by airplane swoops). Overall this is seminal, underrated mid-'60s folk-rock, quite consistent in quality for the most part. It's not an over-investment for the cost-conscious, and if you like any one of their albums, you'll probably like all of them. Note, however, that it's not quite the complete Vanguard recordings since it doesn't have the unreleased version of "Tuileries" that appeared on the compilation Pack Up Your Sorrows: Best of the Vanguard Years. It's also a bit disappointing that no further studio outtakes were found, such as the demos referred to in David Hajdu's book Positively 4th Street. ~Review by Richie Unterberger

"I always sang" argues the complainant. She hummed the airs of Vivaldi 5 years, fell into hard rock at age 15, lived experiences of several groups (Alpheratz, Thunder, Charline and the Fox) before falling in love with jazz. Few nibbles later, she started her own discography. First with the album "Solid" in 2005 and with "How are you? "In 2008. A travel trio on the rich and fertile lands of jazz, blues cottony plains and urban avenues of pop ... The new and third album that we now book "Topaz" is in the same spirit as the previous one, "spark more," she adds. She gets in his way of standard blues or pop it "jazzifie" but also jazz standards she "popise." The album will be pop for some jazz, pop jazz to others. Whatever. It is against the chapels and musical sectarianism. Considering that no genre is "superior" to another, that artists are doers of emotion, dedicated to the unusual spirits, twisters straight lines, rippers benches, Cécile focuses as usual, the beautiful music whatever their origins and offers us a new package *. It offers us in chopped, sweet and felted interpretations.

This is again a trio that recorded this album, always accompanied by Jean-Michel Charbonnel, her husband, one of the best french bass (who plays with such Louiss Eddy, Billy Cobham, Jean-Marie Ecay, André Charlier and Benoït Sourisse, André Manoukian and Didier Lockwood) but this time swapping the 6 strings of Jean-Baptiste Gaudrey (the famous guitar sounds of Martin Solveig) for piano Nicolas Christmas, self-taught raw talent, pianist Little Bob (to see in the film Aki Kaurismaki "Le Havre") but also for Demi Evans and Jean-Jacques Milteau. The choice of album title, "Topaz", we look more closely, is not so trivial.

As the gemstone, which can shine in different colors, this new album is adorned with multiple musical tones. Beliefs attributed to the fifteenth century topaz faculty, among others, to awaken the wisdom and away the sadness and melancholy ... That's what Cecile Charbonnel done with this new album. Always at the service of the swing, emotion and musicality. Velvet jazz tempos felted. The desire to have fun and share the fun on disc and on stage. . Smooth and amazing (*) mainly includes the menu: "Baker Street" (Gerry Rafferty), "Here comes the rain again" (Eurythmics), "Eternal Flame" (Bangles), "For once in my life" (Stevie Wonder ), "Bang Bang" (Cher), "Roxanne", but also "Close to You" (Burt Bacharach), "Mona Lisa" (Nat King Cole), "Teach me tonight" (that interpreted among other Dinah Washington) or "Why Should I Care?" signed Clint Eastwood.Produced by SAFT / Noa Music, the album was arranged by Jean-Michel Charbonnel, recorded and mixed by Antoine Saddle and Andrew Lyden Elisa Studio in November 2011, and mastered by John Dent at Loud Mastering (Taunton / England).Translate by google...  http://www.cecilecharbonnel.com/bio.htm

Maria Jacobs is a fine singer with an appealing voice, a subtle style and the ability to swing. On her debut recording, she is joined by Mike Petrone or Robert "Skeets" Rose on piano, Martin Block or Jesse Dandy on bass, drummer Roy King (on four of the nine songs) and, for three tunes, the saxes of Gerald Linthicome. Among the highlights are a pair of vocal-piano duets ("Black Coffee" and "You 'Don't Know What Love Is"). Based in Cleveland at the time of the recording (she has since relocated to L.A.), Maria Jacobs sings mostly melodic versions of standards (plus her own "No Frills"), stretching out a bit on "Corcovado," "In a Mellow Tone" and "You Don't Know What Love Is." Although hopefully she will explore some lesser-known and newer material in the future, this is an impressive start to what should be a productive career. ~ Scott Yanow   http://www.allmusic.com/album/no-frills-mw0000748365

Avishai Cohen - Triveni II

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen had already reached the upper echelons of the jazz world when he put Triveni into motion, but this trio's debut Introducing Triveni (Anzic Records, 2010) still managed to mark a quantum leap in his artistry. The Israeli-born horn man first made stateside ripples when he placed third in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition in 1997 and those ripples turned to waves as he became an established presence on the scene. A string of albums in his own name, work with his equally sublime siblings in the 3 Cohens, and a slew of sideman dates helped him climb the ladder of success, but his ascendancy was marked by his arrival as the trumpet heir in the SFJAZZ Collective and the formation of this trio. Triveni, a Sanskrit word that means "the place where three sacred rivers meet," is an accurate descriptor for this bold trio.

Cohen called on bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits to help him achieve his artistic aims, sans chordal instrument, and he couldn't have asked for two better-suited partners. The trumpeter has a longstanding relationship with Avital, which includes their collaborative efforts within Third World Love, while Waits' drum work in triangular settings led by pianists Jason Moran and Fred Hersch has established him as the most important, now-practicing stick wielder in the artistic medium known as the jazz trio. When these three men match wits, barbs and quips, the results are stunning. They demonstrate that a trio can be off-the-wall without veering completely off the tracks ("Safety Land"), and they toy with the idea of musical solid ground forming and failing at a moment's notice. Cohen sneaks in one number with mournful, Hebraic undertones ("November 30th"), but the majority of the music doesn't betray his birthplace; instead, the music simply betrays his love for free spirited travels that marry straight line jazz with post bop and free bop tendencies.

He gives a nod to trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie without trying to imitate the high note king ("Woody 'N' You"), touches on broad- toned beauty with a nod to bassist Charles Mingus ("Portrait") and displays a love for Ornette Coleman by borrowing two numbers from the saxophone maverick's book ("Following The Sound" and "Music News"). While the inclusion of "Willow Weep For Me" might seem odd on paper, it fits in perfectly and proves to be one of the most memorable performances on an album full of them. Rather than deliver this one as a soothing balm to heal the fire-borne marks left by earlier numbers, Cohen goes full tilt, trafficking in heady and raunchy melodicism; swagger reigns supreme here, as bubbling, bravado-based lines burst from his bell. Compare-and- contrast discussions that put this album and its predecessor in head-to-head competition may ensue, but these discussions will serve little purpose. Both Triveni dates are triumphant outings; now, it's time for Cohen to buckle down and make another record to complete a Triveni trifecta. ~ Dan Bilawsky

05. When The Lights Are Gone (4:06)
06. When Your Lover Has Gone (4:29)

Amanda’s interest in voice and piano started at a very young age and in school she participated in anything and everything musical. By age 14 she was already locally performing in jazz combos, pit bands, and rock groups. By age 16 she had written, arranged and recorded her first demo record.

She received her bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA after four years of total immersion in jazz and vocal practice. She had the opportunity to study with some of the greatest educators in the world including Charlie Sorrento, Mili Bermejo, Maggi Scott, Greg Hopkins, Ken Cervenka and many more.

Upon completion of her degree, Amanda returned home to the Bay Area and began working as a singer, pianist, arranger, composer and educator. While Amanda's primary focus is jazz, her performances may include anything from her own renditions of contemporary popular songs, to a growing repertoire of original pieces.

Now, as an established artist in the San Francisco area, Amanda continues to expand her increasingly impressive list of venues. She maintained a residency at the city’s favorite Pied Piper Bar & Grill within the historic Palace Hotel as well as playing late night sets in local jazz spots like Savanna Jazz in the Mission District & the Sleeping Lady in Fairfax.

The Amanda Addleman Band is a collection of outstanding players from all over the country who combine beautiful melodies and fiery instrumental playing. The result is a program that is both entertaining and rich in musicalilty.

Raquel Silva Joly, guitarist and singer of bossa nova, shows precocious musical talent coming up from childhood to the study of classical guitar thanks to the gift of absolute ear. After graduating, she devoted herself to interpretative analysis of the works of Latin American authors of the end of '800 (Villa Lobos, Barrios, Ponce). She specialized in the harmonies and rhythms of the Brazilian popular music. An intense concert activity, performing throughout Italy - even during special cultural events - and abroad (Austria, France, Germany, America). The starting point of the artist is a research done on the most beautiful Brazilian songs, with particular reference to the work of Baden Powell, A. Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Ivan Lins. The landing point is to be a revisiting of these great songs in a different key, very personal - though not entirely free from the canons of traditional Brazilian music - particularly attentive to the nuances of harmonics in a constant attempt to merge with the expressive universe classic scholar, and contemporary jazz. Through her arrangements Raquel plays the notes and words of familiar brasilian songs passing by moments of pure energy to the most rarefied atmospheres, such as those typical circular and hypnotic sound of the berimbau...
