Steve Kuhn leads an all-star trio with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster in this compilation of 1986 performances recorded over several nights at the Village Vanguard. First issued on Black Hawk and subsequently re-released in 2012 with a new cover, this is one of the many highlights of the pianist's vast discography. Opening with a spry, playful take of "Little Old Lady," Kuhn follows with his loping, bluesy "Two by Two" and Fats Waller's lyrical "Jitterbug Waltz," the latter showcasing Carter's intricate bass and Foster's light touch with brushes. His brisk setting of "Yesterday's Gardenias" (a song recorded by Glenn Miller in the 1940s) takes it far from its roots, turning this ballad into an engaging post-bop vehicle. The pianist's "Mr. Calypso Kuhn" puts the spotlight on Foster, opening with an intense solo, followed by the addition of Carter and, finally, the leader. Kuhn's luxurious, spacious take of "Never Let Me Go" conveys the song's message even without its lyrics. The disc closes with an extended workout of "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" that leaves the entranced audience wanting more. ~Ken Dryden

Vocalist Maggie Green’s self-titled album of Brazilian music conveys a longing for the endless beaches and samba rhythms of Rio de Janeiro. With her soft yet rhythmic interpretations of bossa nova and samba, sung in masterful Portuguese, the brilliant waters seem but a heartbeat away. This may sound like a stretch for a girl who grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but for Maggie, it was just a natural progression. During her early years, Maggie sat at the piano and studied the complex harmonies and melodies of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. However, while pursuing a degree in classical piano at Michigan State University, her ear began to wander toward jazz music, especially the haunting vocals of Billie Holiday and Chet Baker. This proved to be a significant point, for she not only moved from classical music to jazz, but she also strayed from the piano and focused on her voice. Maggie enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. While at Berklee, Maggie honed her jazz skills and began to delve into Brazilian music.

Studying with vocalist Mili Bermejo, she became fascinated with the syncopated rhythms of Brazil. After graduating from Berklee in 2000, Maggie moved to Columbus, Ohio and began establishing herself as a vocal artist. Following a string of performances in the region including the Columbus Arts Festival, the Columbus Jazz and Rib Fest, the Columbus Latino Festival as well as many night club dates, Maggie began to make appearances outside of Ohio, performing at festivals and clubs from Massachusetts to California. Continually inspired by Brazilian rhythms, Maggie made her first trip to Rio de Janeiro during the summer of 2005. She immediately struck up a musical friendship with pianist Marcos Ariel. The two collaborated on a show, “Rio - New York Connection” featuring NYC saxophonist Joel Frahm, Brazilian drummer Jurim Moreira and bassist Andre Neiva. They played two sold-out shows in front of enthusiastic Rio crowds a highlight of Maggie’s career.

Two years later, she returned to Rio and recorded an album of Brazilian music featuring renowned artists Luiz Avellar, Kiko Freitas, Marcos Ariel, Jurim Moreira and others. This recording stands as a testament to her immersion in bossa nova and samba music. During the fall of 2007, Maggie teamed up with Brazilian guitarist Nelson Faria, drummer Kiko Freitas and American bassist Scott Gold for a series of concerts in the US. The group received rave reviews and standing ovations for their performances in spots like Cleveland’s Nighttown and the Jazz Factory in Louisville, KY. The group gave clinics and concerts at several Ohio universities, exposing the students to South American music.

As an educator, Maggie is currently on the jazz faculty at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. She has also served on the jazz faculty at Capital University. She has also presented vocal workshops at various schools and universities throughout the United States, including the Antonio Adolfo School of Music in Hollywood, Florida. Maggie holds a degree in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music. http://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/maggiegreen

Jeff Baker, one of the best male jazz vocalists around today, is also the vocal director at ArtsWest School for Performing Arts in Eagle, Idaho. Working with high school age performers must be a gas, because Baker has produced a very engaging vocal jazz outing, featuring his students backed by an Origin Records all-star band, with pianist Justin Nielsen sitting in the piano/arranger's chair. Redefinition takes a batch of familiar jazz tunes by the likes of George Gershwin, Henry Mancini, and Rodgers and Hart, and mixes in some popular songs from Prince, Joni Mitchell and Coldplay, with one traditional spiritual thrown in for good measure, and redefines them; bending their shapes a bit and giving them fresh spins. Under the guidance of polished professionals Baker and Nielsen, and backed by a roster of versatile top level musicians, the set holds up so well that the ages of the singers becomes simply a matter of interest.

There is not a half-baked or tentative performance on the set; these young people sing with an uncluttered purity of feeling and remarkable confidence. The Gershwins' "My Man's Gone Now" opens the set. Nielsen's piano sparkles, while Brent Jensen blows a sinewy soprano sax accompaniment to Camille Avery's heartfelt vocal, as the singer tells her story with feeling and a genuine sense of loss, giving way to John McLean's searing guitar. The songs are old familiar tales, leaning on the love or love lost theme. LeAnne Robinson gets deep into a beautiful, weary blues feeling on "You Don't Know What Love Is," while Georgia Sedlack soars in a buoyant take of Mancini's "Moon River." Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (a Miles Davis favorite) is slowed down to a dirge, with a spare arrangement complimenting Cari Stevens' very direct and seemingly world-weary singing. The band brings in a funk feel on Prince's "Nothing Compares," with Fara Sumbureru bouncing into a light groove. "Much Farther to Go," a Rosie Thomas tune, features a Karmen Wolf's pure-toned, horn-like delivery. Harris Long the lone male solo vocalist on the disc possesses a rich baritone similar to Kurt Elling, and gives a fitting reverence to the traditional "City Called Heaven." Coldplay's "Sparks" closes the disc on a modern-leaning note.

Mary Thompson's vocal exudes a melancholy, drifting-into-the-twilight mood. As the tune winds down she is joined by the choir the other soloists plus Michael Wood, Sekayi Sumbureru and Andrew Koba for a classy, collaborative ending to Redefinition, a fine set of jazz vocal tunes that introduce a bunch of amazing young talent. ~ Dan Mcclenaghan  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/redefinition-oa2-records-review-by-dan-mcclenaghan.php#.U92DaGNryKJ

Truly an unearthed gem, Trombone Heaven is a previously unreleased concert recording from 1978 at the Bayshore Inn in Vancouver, Canada, featuring the late slide legends Frank Rosolino and Carl Fontana. The spirited set is anchored by the swinging rhythm section of pianist Elmer Gill, bassist Torban Oxbol and drummer George Ursan. Given the loose, jam-session nature of the set, the tunes are lengthy, allowing ample room for both Rosolino and Fontana to stretch out and display their unmatchable technique. Disc highlights include the impromptu trombone conversations on Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't," Miles Davis' "All Blues" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Ow." The telepathic give-and-take between the co-leaders, especially on the up-tempo numbers is utterly mesmerizing. On the opening ballad medley of "Here's That Rainy Day" and "Stardust," the dynamic duo relies as much on sense of humor and unpredictability of note choice as on virtuosity. The two prod each other on in an uncompetitive way, enjoying each others company and having a swinging good time. By the time of this concert, both Rosolino and Fontana had established their reputations as two of the most innovative trombonists jazz had ever known. This session, chock-full of fiery bop lines, sensual lyricism and eye-popping trombone gymnastics, documents the unbridled passion of two titans of a bygone era. ~ John Barron  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/trombone-heaven-frank-rosolino-uptown-records-review-by-john-barron.php#.U9wls7FryKI

After 15 years of guitarist Lee Ritenour primarily playing crossover music, this set of mostly straight-ahead jazz was a surprise. Ritenour always loved Wes Montgomery's playing and on many of these cuts, that influence dominates his sound and style. Assisted by tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts (who usually takes solo honors), pianist Alan Broadbent, bassist John Patitucci (sticking to acoustic) and drummer Harvey Mason, Ritenour performs such numbers as "Stolen Moments," "Haunted Heart," "Blue In Green" and "Sometime Ago," in addition to four originals (including "Waltz for Carmen"). Although not essential music, this is one of the rare Lee Ritenour rare sets that should interest straight-ahead jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/stolen-moments-mw0000204562

Among the premier vocalists and songwriters in American music today, Dee Alexander has delighted audiences and impressed critics with her flawless intonation, her interpretive brilliance, her intrepid improvising, and the range of genres that she commands. Ms. Alexander’s performances span virtually every music genre related to the African diaspora: gospel, blues, neo-soul, rhythm-and-blues, and world music. But her true heart belongs to jazz, the one idiom that can encompass all her influences. From a sultry ballad to a contemporary funk groove, high-flying swing to a romping scat solo, Ms. Alexander delivers every note with a passion and grace that leave her listeners limp.

One Chicago critic has remarked: “I only wish all singers could sing any note as well as Dee sings every note.”

Like Carter, on Standards Band bassist Dave Santoro plays more of a supportive role than a solo role. He does solo, however, showing mind-before-fingers deliberateness on "Stairway to the Stars," "The More I See You" and "For All We Know." He seems equally influenced by the high-note lyricism of Scott LaFaro and the big-toned low register of players such as Paul Chambers and Ray Brown.Tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi and pianist Bruce Barth are the main soloists in this quartet, with drummer Tom Melito completing the group. Throughout the seven standards that comprise the album,

Bergonzi demonstrates that he is one of the best Coltrane-influenced saxophonists; he is supple, swinging, and full of ideas. Barth ranges from clipped, Wynton Kelly-like treble tinkling to more robust accents a la Tyner. For a take on how a skillful, mature post-Trane group approaches standards, check out this album. ~Owen Cordle

Bassist Dave Santoro is a throwback to the not too distant past when cutting-edge small group improvisation was anchored by stalwarts such as Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Sam Jones and Jimmy Garrison. Thankfully, there are seasoned pros like Santoro to remind us that a strong supple pulse is still the core around which everything else revolves. Indeed, to paraphrase Thelonious Monk, this is music that “lifts the bandstand.”

Nancy is a multi-talented professional artist. She was a well-regarded commercial potter in Indiana, establishing a local cooperative and selling her work regionally and nationally. After a debilitating automobile accident and a subsequent move to Oregon, she returned to studying jazz vocals, following in her mother's footsteps and returning to a childhood passion. What makes Nancy stand out among the scores of current jazz vocalists is her heartfelt and intimate embrace of the songs. Eschewing the popular attempt to modernize material with complex arrangements, Nancy instead captures the classic beauty of these songs with a simple emphasis on melody with tastefully minimal accompaniment from her band. The result is a sincere and personal approach to the American Songbook.

Notes about the band:

Nancy met jazz pianist John Crider in 2003 and the two quickly established a professional rapport, which turned into musical collaboration and finally into marriage. John has been a jazz fixture in Eugene, OR, for many years, teaching jazz to students of all ages and being the preferred accompanist to many of the area's singers. Byron Case joins Nancy and John on the bass for this CD. Byron, one of the original members of the 60's pop band The Sunrays, has been one of the most sought-after bass players in the Eugene area for decades. His perfect sense of time and minimalist approach to accompaniment provide the firm foundation for every song. Mark Hurwitt, a Berklee College of Music graduate, provides tasteful and reserved percussion, and adds the spice to the mix. This CD represents a culmination of hundreds of hours of gig dates, rehearsals and jam sessions with the talented musicians in Eugene, and Portland, Oregon. Thanks to each one of them. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/nancyhamilton

Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's debut for Concord (which has been reissued on CD) alerted the jazz world to the young swing stylist and predated Wynton Marsalis' first record (and the emergence of the Young Lions) by a couple years. Hamilton, who mixed together Zoot Sims and Ben Webster to form his own recognizable tone, already sounded in prime form for this set. Teamed up with trumpeter Bill Berry, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Jake Hanna, Hamilton essentially launched the revival of mainstream jazz with this record. Highlights include "Indiana," "Stuffy," "Broadway," and "Blue Room," but all eight selections are quite enjoyable.

Using swinging arrangements by the recently deceased Herbie Phillips, Shew and Fontana (who are assisted by pianist George Cables, bassist Bob Magnusson, and drummer Joe LaBarbera) perform a bop-oriented program comprised of nine jazz standards. The interplay between the two very fluent horns is consistently delightful, and the highlights include "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," "My Romance," "The Girl From Ipanema," and "While My Lady Sleeps." Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi enlists the help of critically acclaimed bassist Scott Colley and all star drummer Antonio Sanchez to push the improvisational boundaries of both classical and Latin music. Anything new here? The format has found some limited success with larger ensembles. When one thinks of trios there may be only a half dozen truly great recordings that transcend genre and push the limits of improvisational music to new heights, Stories is one such release. While Colley and Sanchez are widely known within the North American audience, the Italian Enrico Pieranunzi would seem to have emerged from the harmonic shadows. Recordings such as this rarely make that successful transition to small ensemble performance yet there is a indescribable spirit that permeates the very essence of this recording. The melodic genesis of this release runs from the exquisite and dialed down "Slow Gene" from Scott Colley to the whirling dervish of harmonic fury with "Which Way Is Up" from Pieranunzi. The Latin pinache of Sanchez is strong with the end result as improvisational conversations from a true collective of artists and not a pianist and two afterthoughts.  A stealth release that could easily slip under your radar. One of the finer piano trios of 2014.  http://www.criticaljazz.com/2014/07/enrico-pieranunzi-stories-cam-2014.html

The L.A. Jazz Scene calls The Hi-Fi Quintet "Spectacular!". The Hi-Fi Quintet, with its classic "B3" organ sound, is taking the retro-jazz scene by storm. Comprised of five of Southern California\'s top studio/jazz musicians who share a love for the classic jazz slice of the American songbook. The ensemble embraces the jazz spectrum from its earliest roots to birth of the big bands to the optimistic sounds of the Las Vegas Strip of the 50's and 60's. In addition to being musical virtuosos, the members of the swingin' five-some are engaging entertainers who deliver this timeless music with a Rat-Pack punch.

Elizabeth Lamers - Vocals; Tony Guerrero - Trumpet/Vocal; Rob Kyle - Tenor Sax; Joe Bagg - B3 Organ; Matt Johnson - Drums.

Highly-respected saxophonist DANA ROBBINS, who currently plays for Grammy Award ® winning artists Delbert McClinton and Aretha Franklin, will release her second solo effort, Dana Robbins, in July of 2014 as she gears up for a tour fronting her own band. She did a soft launch in February of 2014 for her fans on the Sandy Beaches Cruise, an annual music cruise organized by McClinton. The CD has been very well-received.

Originally from the Detroit area, Robbins now calls Nashville home after a seven year stint in Los Angeles where she recorded and toured with Barry Manilow playing soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones as well as flute and piccolo. She has also played with Roger Daltrey, John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Chaka Khan, James Brown, Steve Cropper and so many more and was the band leader and music director for “The Chuck Woolery Show.” She is regarded by her peers as a bold and passionate player. Delbert McClinton comments, “Dana is my hero. I’m fortunate to get to make music night after night on the same stage with her.” Aretha Franklin told Robbins, “You play very well.”

Dana Robbins is the follow-up to her 2010 debut, So So Good. The new album comprises 11 songs; it is a mix of original music, co-writes and cover material. While six of the songs are instrumental, four of the songs feature vocals by Delbert McClinton (“Hardest Part” and “Pullin’ The Strings”) and former Wet Willie lead singer, Jimmy Hall (“Party On The Ocean” and “Bless Your Heart).” Robbins also makes her vocal debut on the closing track, “Right As Rain,” proving to be as sultry with her voice as she is on her horns.

For this project, Dick Hyman and Derek Smith play twin piano versions of 15 songs that became standards due partly to their use in movies. Hyman and Smith are both major players and they avoid getting in each other's way with some of the ensembles being worked out a bit in advance. The interplay between the pianists is delightful but somehow their encounter is not quite as exciting or as lively as one might hope. Maybe the inclusion of a few more burners, plus less cooperation and more competition might have helped. The performances are enjoyable, with the highlights including "What Is This Thing Called Love," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Singin' in the Rain" and a boogie-woogie version of "The Entertainer." But it falls short overall of being the expected classic. ~Scott Yanow

In their fifth recording one can hear the band continue to mature and broaden their focus a bit, while staying right in their wheelhouse: swinging, bluesy 'party' jazz! Their original material (such as Night is For Lovers) stands solidly besides jazz classics (Exactly Like You) and forgotten gems (The World Is Waiting For the Sunrise). Sultry songs (Sway) bump into low down blues (St James Infirmary Blues) and Dixieland stomps (Milenberg Joys). This, and plenty of dance and party music to keep you swinging. This is definitely a recording to hold on to for years to come.

Bryan Redmond (vocals, saxophones), Chad Boydston (trumpet), Ryan Wurtz (guitar), Ben Ruth (upright bass, sousaphone), Lisa McKenzie (drums)

Dallas, Texas-based Laura Ainsworth, though performing last-century throwback cocktail jazz, may have stumbled into a zeitgeist defining moment with the album-opening title track from Keep It To Yourself.  Whether she knew it or not back in the recording studio, this delicious tale of revenge exacted on a serial philanderer is perfectly of the moment in this period of celebrity male misdeed from the likes of Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Anthony Weiner. Singing in a satiny, impossibly old-fashioned, nearly three-octave voice, Ainsworth is the very portrait of West Coast cool.  Credit the able assist provided by keyboardist Brian Piper, who also works as a producer on the project and lent his regular working trio to provide the crisp, understated musical setting. Unfortunately, “While the Music Plays On,” the more conventional sax-driven second track on Keep It To Yourself, can’t match that kind of ripped-from-the-headlines immediacy.  And the album mostly continues along that vein, often settling for a comfy nostalgia that never quite reaches the same fizzy melding of old and new. That’s not to say it all isn’t very charming, or to take anything away from Ainsworth’s facility as an urbane chanteuse.  No, she sings the heck out of these songs – from the Liza-ish “April Fooled Me,” to her plucky pirouette around a clarinet on “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “He’s So Unusual,” to the sassy Rosemary Clooney-influenced “That’s the Kind of Guy I Dream of.” And it’s not even that these are simply tried-and-trues, the kind of all-but-worn-out standards that have become part and parcel of the dog-eared so-called American songbook. Instead, “That’s the Kind of Guy” is actually an unreleased Nat “King” Cole side that was last widely heard as a Betty Hutton b-side back in 1952. Helen Kane’s “He’s So Unusual” goes even further back, to 1928. There’s just a different fun explorative kick, however, to tracks like “La Vie En Rose,” where Ainsworth stomps on the gas after a pillowy French ballad-style opening, skipping into a fun 1930s-era Parisian jazz rhythm complete with an imaginative turn by violinist Milo Deering of the jazz/bluegrass fusion group Beatlegras.

Piper and Co. also bring an interesting Pat Metheny-esque modernity to “Fantastic Planet of Love,” offering an album-closing glimpse of what Ainsworth would sound like outside the arid confines of post-war cliches. Elsewhere, though, Ainsworth plays it straight on “Love For Sale,” and the results are sensual, appropriately done, but nowhere near as intriguing.  “Personality” has a winking sensibility, but its broad cabaret style doesn’t give her talent enough credit.  It’s too cute by half.  And, of course, Ainsworth has no trouble with the Ella Fitzgerald gem “Midnight Sun.” After all, she grew up around this smoothly ingratiating style of music; her father was renowned big band performer/arranger Billy Ainsworth, who accompanied legends like Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett.  Still, the younger Ainsworth should know better than most how difficult it is to match not just Ella’s dizzying talent but her memorable gumption.  This one, again, feels too safe. That said, Ainsworth goes on to pull off perhaps the biggest surprise of all on Keep It To Yourself, an update that emerges as the transcendent moment every singer hopes for when they dig out one of those dusty, decades-old favorites.  It arrives in the form of “Skylark,” a been-there, done-that warhorse from Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer.  Working in much the same way as her musical heroes once did, Ainsworth recorded the tune live in a single take. Perhaps just as importantly, though, she did so in a fresh new format alongside jazz guitarist Chris Derose, a regular accompanist for Willie Nelson and Michael Feinstein.  The results are devastatingly beautiful, nakedly honest, and a powerful argument for the ageless compositions that Ainsworth so clearly treasures.  She’s not wrong to love them.  She’s just got to remember to keep goosing them into a new age. ~ Nick DeRiso  http://www.reviewyou.com/laura-ainsworth-keep-it-to-yourself-2/.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, this former traffic reporter and disc jockey lived in Los Angeles for eleven years and sang The Langham Huntington, (formerly the Ritz Carlton,) The Four Seasons in Westlake Village, Chaya of Beverly Hills, and The Torrance Civic Center to name a few. She has released four albums, No Frills, Free As A Dove, Chasing Dreams and Art of the Duo. Maria also opened for jazz trumpeter Chuck Mangione at The Coach House and in Columbus, Ohio she was featured with the opening act for Bob Dorough. Maria recorded with Alphonso Johnson and Ndugu Chancler for “Chasing Dreams.” It received a wonderful review in Singer Magazine, LA Jazz Scene, All About Jazz and Jazz Corner. Also as a songwriter, she wrote “So This Is Love,” a theme song for a sitcom of the same name on the web. Maria has always been surrounded by diversity in music that reached far beyond what could be found in record stores. Maria began singing in the Melkite Catholic Church at a very early age, and soon began sharing the bandstand with her father Mike Jacobs, a drummer in the Cleveland area.

Maria has always wanted to sing and began so by doing her rendition of favorite standards, a few of which are heard on her first album entitled “No Frills,” available on iTunes. In the fourth grade Maria began fifteen years of classical flute study and some piano, gaining a new appreciation for European melody and harmony through much practice and listening. All of these rich, early experiences lead to superior ratings in flute competitions throughout high school, a music scholarship at The Ohio State University and singing jobs in area night clubs. Maria has performed and recorded with some of the finest musicians, including: Tony Dumas, Ralph Penland, Greg Poree, Michael Bluestein, Jerry White, Bob Conti, Octavio Bailly, Ted Howe, Ed Czach, Adam Cohen, Bili Redd, Joe Corerro, Richard Sherman, Sherry Luchette, Jack Bone, John Stuart, Dan Maier, Joe Hunter, Greg Bandy, Drene Ivy, Kevin Muhammed, Dave Thomas and Mike Jacobs. Maria still performs in Los Angeles, as well as Milwaukee, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Free As A Dove is heard world wide on internet stations and traditional stations in Los Angeles. http://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/mariajacobs
