The sophomore album from Morgan James, 2014's Hunter, features the Broadway vocalist's mix of retro-R&B and '70s-influenced singer/songwriter soul. Ostensibly James' debut album, Hunter actually follows up her 2012 Nina Simone tribute concert recording, Morgan James Live from Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. That said, Hunter is James' first recording of all-original material and, in that sense, a much more personal statement than her live debut. Produced by jazz and bluegrass guitarist Doug Wamble, Hunter finds James delving deeply into a collection of tunes that, while not show tunes in any sense, still make clever use of her stage-honed chops. It also doesn't hurt that Wamble, an experienced musician with a wealth of musical skill and cross-genre knowledge, has assembled a backing band that features a bevy of heavyweight jazz artists, including acclaimed pianist Robert Glasper, saxophonist Ron Blake, trumpeter Ravi Best, and others. However, rather than having James focus on jazz standards or even jazz-influenced pop songs, Wamble helped the vocalist craft an R&B-inflected album that brings to mind classic artists like Carole King and Hall & Oates as well as more contemporary singers including Beyoncé and the late Amy Winehouse. James, who made her Broadway debut in 2010 alongside Nathan Lane in The Addams Family, has a big, resonant voice with a ton of flexibility, perfectly suited for suc crisp, soulful cuts as "Heart Shake" and "Bring Yourself to Me." Elsewhere, she delves into several equally compelling bluesy midtempo numbers, including "You Never Lied" and "Drown." Ultimately, it's that voice  matched with Wamble's superb musical vision  that creates the soulful, exuberant vibe of Hunter. ~ Matt Collar  http://www.allmusic.com/album/hunter-mw0002662522

Avishai Cohen & Nitai Hershkovits - Duende

Avishai Cohen is a distinctive player: his raw energy, deft and fluid fretting style and tough, forceful right hand combine in one of the most readily recognizable double bass sounds in contemporary music. He's brought this sound to collaborations with many leading musicians including pianists Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau, and drummer Mark Guiliana, and has produced a dozen albums as leader. Duende, Cohen's third album for Blue Note, is something of a new departure: a duo record with up-and-coming pianist Nitai Hershkovits. In current terms it's short at just under 34 min utes, but every tune indeed, every note counts.Cohen first heard Hershkovits playing in a Tel Aviv bar when the pianist was only 20 years of age. Hershkovits was still in his early-20s when the duo recorded Duende, but his style and confidence demonstrate a mature talent and sensibility. The album title is derived from a Spanish word for artistic soul or spirit; according to Cohen, "It's a feeling that nurtures music." The music that's nurtured on this album is a mix of Cohen's own tunes and some classic jazz compositions. Cohen's tunes tend to be gentle, pretty, ballads or mid-tempo numbers. Whether it's the waltz-time feel of "Ann's Tune" or the rolling, fluid, lyricism of "Signature" or "Soof," the duo performs exquisitely, sharing lead and rhythm roles with equanimity.

Hershkovits sits out "Ballad For An Unborn," leaving Cohen to take over the piano fora heart felt solo rendition of his own melancholy composition. The musicians give Thelonious Monk's "Criss Cross" a stabbing, almost military, rhythm. Cohen opens and closes the tune with extended periods of arco bass, his playing powerful, with a low down growling groove. The pair's interpretation of John Coltrane's "Central Park West" is, by contrast, very down-tempo and relaxed, the interplay between bass and piano beautifully affecting. Hershkovits doesn't get a composer credit on Duende but his arrangement of Cole Porter's "All Of You" brings freshness to the standard an up-tempo, jagged, rework that switches lead roles between piano and bass with imaginative grace. Although it's Cohen's name writ large on the album cover, this is a genuine duo recording. Hershkovits is an equal partner in performance, clearly unperturbed by the bassist's experience and talent, and Cohen is happy to share the spotlight with this exciting young talent. Duende is an all-too-brief introduction to an impressive new partnership. ~ Bruce Lindsay  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/duende-avishai-cohen-blue-note-records-review-by-bruce-lindsay.php

A towering figure in American musical history, Cole Porter's music has been performed by countless people and groups for decades, enduring to this day. Pianist/composer David Leonhardt is the latest artist to interpret the work of the legendary songwriter with a smart and snappy presentation on The David Leonhardt Jazz Group Plays Cole Porter. With plenty of music to choose from, Leonhardt selects six compositions from the 1940s and '50s, but was wise enough to fill the balance of the repertoire with charts from the '30s, Porter's most successful songwriting decade. Usually performing and recording with trios, the pianist expands his group to a quintet with New York singer Nancy Reed who adds a touch of class to the album. Pittsburgh native Paul Wells anchors the rhythms on drums. with Matthew Parrish providing tasteful bass lines. The star in Leonhardt's band, however, is 71 year-old Philadelphia legend Larry McKenna, one of the finest tenor saxophonists on the East coast, and the dean of Philadelphia reed men. The familiar 1930s standard "Love For Sale" opens the disc, featuring the pianist in a trio format, with McKenna and Reed sitting this one out but not for long, as the two contribute to the lovely ballad of "Every Time We Say Goodbye." On "Just One of Those Things," a gem of an instrumental piece, McKenna takes over the music with his superb phrases, aptly supported by Leonhardt. Reed sparkles on the classic "Night And Day," with McKenna filling the background as the singer scats a bit.

Leonhardt comes out of his shell on "In The Still Of The Night," making a statement with his more than appreciable piano chops. Parrish and Reed perform a brief duet on the introduction of "I've Got You Under My Skin," before the rest of the group weigh in on a lovely piece. Another outstanding instrumental number is the immortal "I Concentrate On You," a showcase for both pianist and saxophonist alike. Other warm and delicate songs, interpreted brightly, are "I Love You" and the soft love ballad, "All of You." Leonhardt ends his Porter homage with 1938's "Get Out Of Town," closing the session as it began, in a classic piano trio format highlighting his style and swagger on the instrument. The David Leonhardt Jazz Group Plays Cole Porter is devoid of weak musical moments. Leonhardt has produced another creative album conveying the themes of love at which Porter was also so good with fresh new arrangements, making old classics sound almost like new. ~ Edward Blanco  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/the-david-leonhardt-jazz-group-plays-cole-porter-david-leonhardt-big-bang-records-review-by-edward-blanco.php

The jazz trumpeter steps up to the microphone. Light outlines his horn. With closed eyes, he begins. The crowd settles, quiet and reflective, as the tune hangs in the air. A saxophone’s bellow enters in, then the bass’s moan, finally the pinpricks of the piano, and the steady rhythm of the drums. It’s Sunday, the song is Amazing Grace, and it’s time for church. Dawn Holt Lauber was hailed as “exquisite” by Howard Reich of The Chicago Tribune for the world premiere performance of William Russo’s Jubilatem with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. Lauber also performed with the CJE in Russo’s Chicago Suite 2 and Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts.

The soprano first performed Ellington’s Sacred Concerts at The Riverside Church of New York City, which ignited an interest in jazz, both secular and what has come to be known as sacred jazz, or even church jazz. Lauber’s recent recording, “Everlasting” (spirituals & hymns with jazz band) is featured on the jazz playlist of Sounds of Gospel Network radio. She performs regularly with the Chicago band, Churchjazz. Their collaborations include worship services, concerts, tours, recordings, premiere of The Jazz Passion, and numerous benefits for World Vision, World Bicycle Relief, Jimmy Carter Foundation, and the Student Global AIDS Campaign, among others. The Jazztet had been in existence for two years when they recorded what would be their final LPs, Here and Now and Another Git Together. The personnel, other than the two co-leaders, flugelhornist Art Farmer and tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson, had completely changed since 1960 but the group sound was the same. The 1962 version of The Jazztet included trombonist Grachan Moncur III, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Roy McCurdy. It is remarkable to think that this talent-filled group wasn't, for some reason, snapped up to record even more albums together. Highlights of their excellent out-of-print LP include Ray Bryant's "Tonk," "Whisper Not," "Just in Time," and Thelonious Monk's "Ruby My Dear." A classic if short-lived hard bop group. He had started playing piano when he was seven and at nine, he studied with Oscar Peterson's sister Daisy; the Peterson influence is still felt in his style. Jones played with show bands and worked with pop singer Ken Hamilton (1963-1980), much of the time in Puerto Rico. It was not until he returned to Montreal in 1980 that he committed himself to playing jazz full-time. Since the mid-'80s, Oliver Jones has recorded extensively for Justin Time and established himself as a major modern mainstream player with impressive technique and a hard-swinging style. A unique trip through contemporary samba-funk, relaxed bossa nova and earthy north-eastern rhythms on a bebop base.

Imagine a sunny terrace in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro‘s vivid bairro, just opposite the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. Here, between the lush green of the mountains and the blue Guanabara bay, melodies and rhythms float naturally through the air. You just have to grab the right moment for inspiration. It was here that the idea of this album was born, almost ten years ago, when guitarist Paulo Morello took advantage of such a moment and dreamed up the first bars of “Afternoon In Rio”. However, at that moment, those fragments – not written down – flew away through the hot breeze of the afternoon.
Morello, a dedicated Brazil aficionado, who was working with bossa nova legends Leny Andrade, Pery Ribeiro, Alaide Costa and Johnny Alf for years, is always keen to explore his predilections with interesting new projects. One day, he was enjoying a glass of beer with his Munich friend and colleague Tizian Jost. The pianist has an equally immense enthusiasm for Brazilian music has enjoyed many musical adventures with Morello, among them playing with Grammy winner Leny Andrade or the German-based carioca, Viviane de Farias. They were discussing the possibility of playing Brazil Jazz in the traditional organ trio setting – a sound that has rarely be heard in that way.

And when the question of a drummer arose, the name of Erivelton Silva immediately came up. Both Paulo and Tizian admired the drummer for his incredibly groovy playing with Rosa Passos. The musician from Rio de Janeiro has worked with many of the greats: Chico Buarque, João Bosco, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Menescal and Paquito D‘Rivera. He developed a virtuoso samba drumming style that is admired by his drum colleagues worldwide. After they managed to track Silva down the project was under way.

When a trio plays Brazilian music, it will always be compared to the great performers, since the history of this music is rich with troikas in those latitudes. Famous leaders on each of the given instruments instantly come to mind: Roberto Menescal (g), Walter Wanderley (org), Milton Banana (dr), just to name a few. Morello, Jost and Silva draw level with these eminent musicians - and add a different flavour to the tropical trio pedigree. No one is fronting here; all three musicians act as equal partners. Also the repertoire – most of it being original compositions by Morello and Jost - is unmatched in its variety, reaching out from Rio to the Northeast of the country and even making forays into fusion jazz. Says Morello: “We play Brazilian music in a unique way, because we do it on a bebop base, and at the same time our compositions are tailor-made for Brazilian rhythms.”

The landscape of those rhythms is breathtaking, comprising earthy samba funk, the heavily accentuated samba-de-breque, bossa nova, of course, chorinho, Rio‘s old-time music, and baião from the north east of Brazil. Listen to the intricate funkiness of “Let‘s Vamos” of which the trio presents two versions, one featuring German vibraphone master Wolfgang Lackerschmid and the other Morello‘s long-time companion, Kim Barth, on flute. Jost demonstrates his deep dedication to the Bahian culture, highlighted in the rustic “Santo Amaro”, in which guitar virtuoso Morello shows his rock influences. Organ wizard Jost – who was initially a church organist, by the way – also easily switches to the Fender Rhodes, delivering an amazing solo in Morello‘s bossa, “Na Hora Da Paixão”. “Rebuliço” has the trio re-inventing the chorinho genre, which romps away at double speed in the final section. And, talking of bossa, with “Você Vai Ver” the group pays an unusual tribute to Tom Jobim: the melody is relocated to the organ in Walter Wanderley style and is graced by fine embellishments from Hendrik Meurkens‘ harmonica. Close friend, bassist Dudu Penz, also dropped in to propel some of the tracks with a crisp earthiness.

“What about the fragments of the terrace song?” you may ask. Well, one day they rose up from oblivion again. While sitting in the afternoon sun with his guitar, Morello had been filmed by a journalist who showed him the document years later. Instantly Morello remembered the line, worked on it - and now the result fiercely stands as an opener in which the virtues of all three musicians are broadly displayed: Morello‘s inventive and virtuosic improvisation, Jost‘s steaming response to it and the compact, semi-quaver- laden precision of Silva. Don‘t be mistaken: a lazy afternoon in Rio might become very hot!

The Center for the Arts of Homer in Homer, New York, was originally the First Baptist Church of Homer. Built in 1893 from locally made bricks, the building exemplifies the Richardson Romanesque style that was popular in that era.

After more than a century of serving parishioners in this tiny town nestled in the rolling hills of Central New York, the church was purchased in 2001 by a small group of caring local individuals who dedicated themselves to a dual mission of enhancing opportunities for appreciation of the arts and preserving this historic Homer landmark.

Since its official opening in 2005, the center has proven to be a remarkable concert venue. With no amplification or reinforcement of any kind, the near-perfect acoustics of the former church sanctuary provide a memorable listening experience that is sonorous yet warm and delicate at the same time.

This unique setting was a perfect place for trombonist John Allred and trumpeter Charlie Bertini to shine. Although these two accomplished artists had previously played together countless times in different ensembles over a period of many years, this performance marked the first time the two of them had paired for a full-length concert together.

Backed by a stellar rhythm section of piano, guitar and acoustic bass, John and Charlie clearly enjoyed the communication and spontaneity of performing live that evening. Fortunately, the fleeting, magical moments they shared were captured by recording engineer Ray Ackerman and can now be enjoyed by all. This performance is truly pure and organic jazz at its finest.

A Paris based singer-songwriter with Australian-Italian origins, for her 15th birthday Aurielle was given the album 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell. Inspired by this she bought herself a guitar and taught herself to play. She began writing songs and playing in coffee houses. During this time Aurielle also attended the Sydney conservatorium of music part time to study Jazz vocals. Between her folk roots and her new love of Jazz the delicate fusion of Aurielles signature sound began to evolve. In 2011, she recorded her first studio album of her own compositions titled 'Send the wandering girl home' .

At age 22, Aurielle moved to Milan where she secured a publishing contract with Sony music. There she began learning to speak and sing in Italian and discovered much about her own Italian families rich musical history. Her father Ettore Sciorilli was a popular singer-songwriter and her grandfather Eros Sciorilli a renowned composer and director or orchestra. " I delved into the history of my grandfather and found he published more than 500 songs performed by some of the best singers in Italy. His song 'non pensare a me' performed by Claudio Villa won the Sanremo festival in 1967. It became clear to me that his music was still relevant today and so I decided to present it to a new audience with new jazz arrangements ."

And so 'Eros Blues' was born, an album of jazz interpretations of her grandfathers compositions.

Recorded in Paris at La Frette studios and featuring arrangements by Grégory Privat and Jerry Leonidé

'Eros Blues' is sure to have a life of its own of which Eros Sciorilli would have been proud.

Nikoletta Szoke was born in Zalaegerszeg (Hungary) in 1983. She was only four years old when her family moved to Budapest and started her studies there. Although she had been born into one of the Hungarian gipsy musical dynasties (her father, Sándor Szoke is a noted cimbalom player), she didn't start learning music until the age of 18. She was accepted at a conservatory and became a student of the noted jazz singer, Gábor Winand in 2002. She started to perform right after her first singing lesson. After three and a half years of studying and performing she entered for the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition held at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005. The competition was open to jazz singers under the age of 30 from all around the world. Nikoletta had been invited and was the winner of the first prize and the public prize, too. Chairing the jury was Barbara Hendricks and Randy Crawford was her deputy. Nikoletta started to take classical singing lessons as well in 2005 as a student of Júlia Bikfalvy, who had coached the soprano diva Andrea Rost to international stardom. In January 2006 she took part at the conference of the International Associaton for Jazz Education (IAJE Conference) in New York, and she performed both at the New York Hilton and Dizzy's Club at the Lincoln Center. In 2006 she won the Lakatos Ablakos Dezso Hungarian state jazz scholarship which is given to three young Hungarian musicians every year. Since the competition she has been pursuing an increasingly successful performing career.

Her debut album, Golden Earrings was released by the Hungarian company, Gramy Records in October 2008. In January 2009 she also signed a contract with the Japanese label, Atelier Sawano, the latter launching in Japan A song for you, Nikoletta's second album on 17th of the same month. After the great success of "A Song for You" in 2010 she signs a five-album deal with Atelier Sawano. The first album of this contract, "My Song" is released in February. Nikoletta and the band launch the album at the Cotton Club, Tokyo simultaneously. In August she is featured as special guest at the Budapest concert of the extraordinary vocalist, tenfold Grammy-winner, Bobby McFerrin, where they perform a duet. In February 2011 her 4th album, "Shape of My Heart" is out in the stores. In 2011 this album becomes a best-seller at the label (http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/fl/rank/101/33/1/). In February 2012 her fifth album, 'Inner Blaze' is released.  http://www.nikolettaszoke.com/nikoletta_eng.php

Lou Donaldson's Lush Life is the sort of mysterious lost session that inexplicably fell through the cracks from time to time at Blue Note Records during their wildly productive 1960s and the sort of collectable that used to make vinyl hawks salivate. This January 1967 session, unreleased until 1980 when it debuted in Japan under a different title (now getting the Rudy Van Gelder Edition treatment), seems to have gone against everything that was happening in jazz (and American culture) at the time. With Coltrane in his final six months of life and Miles about to enter his electric phase, you can understand why Alfred Lion may not have thought the time was right to issue an album as gentle and luxuriously orchestral as this. Even the players gathered in this octet (including Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner) seem to be harking back to styles they left behind several years earlier.

The disc opens with the unapologetically romantic sound of Pepper Adams' baritone, before Donaldson states the melody and then hands it off for a solo from Shorter. Each of the sax players sounds as if he is doing his impression of Ben Webster: Adams on the brawny low end, Donaldson sweetly fluttering on top, Shorter wrapping his arms around the midrange. No groove, blues or boogaloos to be found here. Only Donaldson and his bandmates exploring the pretty side of their instruments, enabled by Duke Pearson's peerless arrangements, with playing that starts lovely and gets lovelier, as the soloists reinforce and build on what's heard before. Perfect as the soundtrack to a romantic evening for two, the disc carries one caveat: this RVG edition offers no bonus tracks, so at its original 35-minute playing time, don't forget to hit the repeat button.

The most unusual aspect of this typically exciting recital by Adam Makowicz is that on six of the 11 songs, the pianist is joined by two bassists, Dave Holland and Charlie Haden. Drummer Al Foster completes the group, and Haden is the only bassist on the remaining selections. Makowicz explores 11 George Gershwin songs, including "They All Laughed," "Prelude #2," "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Rhapsody In Blue." Although he shows great respect for the melodies, the pianist does come up with some fresh variations, even on the warhorses.

Another fine Webster release on Verve that sees the tenor great once again backed by the deluxe Oscar Peterson Trio. In keeping with the high standard of their Soulville collaboration of two years prior, Webster and the trio Peterson is joined by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen use this 1959 date to conduct a clinic in ballad playing. And while Soulville certainly ranks as one of the tenor saxophonist's best discs, the Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson set gets even higher marks for its almost transcendent marriage of after-hours elegance and effortless mid-tempo swing none of Webster's boogie-woogie piano work to break up the mood here.

Besides reinvigorating such lithe strollers as "Bye Bye Blackbird" (nice bass work by Brown here) and "This Can't Be Love," Webster and company achieve classic status for their interpretation of the Sinatra gem "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." And to reassure Peterson fans worried about scant solo time for their hero, the pianist lays down a healthy number of extended runs, unobtrusively shadowing Webster's vaporous tone and supple phrasing along the way. Not only a definite first-disc choice for Webster newcomers, but one of the jazz legend's all-time great records. ~ Stephen Cook  http://www.allmusic.com/album/ben-webster-meets-oscar-peterson-mw0000022556
