Though endlessly confused with the singer Big Joe Turner, pianist Joe Turner came from a completely different direction, following the James P. Johnson/Fats Waller stride tradition, armed with a superb technique and a fine sense of swing. Born in Baltimore, he started to learn the piano from his mother at age five and began to make a name for himself in Harlem as a teenager shortly after his move to New York in 1925. He was an accompanist to Adelaide Hall in a duo, first with Alex Hill and then Francis Carter, the latter with whom he and Hall toured Europe in 1931. He remained in Europe through 1939 when war broke out, upon which he returned to the U.S. to work as a singer.

After playing with Sy Oliver's army band in 1944-1945 and Rex Stewart in 1946, Turner returned to the continent, residing in Hungary in 1948 and then Switzerland from 1949 to 1962. He settled in Paris in 1962 in a residency at La Calvados, continued to play engagements elsewhere in Europe and occasionally the U.S., and eventually survived to became the last major active stride pianist of his era. Among his few available albums is a 1984 project with Knocky Parker and his Houserockers on Southland. ~bio by Richard S. Ginnell

Gustav Lundgren was born in Stockholm 1980. He started to play guitar when he was 12 years old. For the first 3 years of his musical career Jimi Hendrix was his biggest role model. At 15 years of age Gustav began studying at Södra Latin in Stockholm. Södra Latin is a school that has a program for young jazz musicians and many of Sweden's prominent musicians started their careers here. During this period he met some of the most talented young players in Swedish modern jazz such as Jonas Kullhammar, Andreas Öberg, Fredrik Lindborg and Carl Bagge. During this period he listened to guitar players like: Pat Matheny, Max Schultz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bireli Lagrene and most of all the great John Schofield.

In November 2001 Gustav founded a brand new project, the Django Reinhardt tribute band called Hot Club de Suede featuring Andreas Öberg & Hampus Lundgren. The group became an immediate success. Gustav toured around Europe for 5 years with HCdS, they also made one tour to the USA with singer Connie Evingson. The group has collaborated with guests-stars like Jimmy Rosenberg (NL), Yorgui Loeffler (FR), Ola Kvernberg (N), Basily (NL), Lars Erstrand, Bengan Janson & Magnus Lindgren (S). They have released three albums, "avec” SJRCD002 (2002) "Hommage a Django" sitcd9309 (2004) & "Stockholm Sweetnin'" (2006) .

Jonah Jones zoomed to popularity in the late ‘50s. He found a successful formula and used it to brighten the hit charts with a succession of bouncy albums on Capitol Records. His quartet was one of the three newcomers in the Top 10 wide variety of small groups listed in the “favorite Instrumental” Billboard lists in 1958.

This is a powerful joining of forces, with trumpet man Jonah Jones taking the lead in front of the Casa Loma styled Benny Carter arrangements for big band. The tunes are all closely associated with other famous horn men—James, Armstrong, Stewart, Eldridge, Berigan, etc—while the impeccable studio band radiates a goodly fire of its own behind Jones. On “That Righteous Feelin’” the voices of the Jubilee Four keep in a handclapping mood the fresh, sanctifying gospel sounds of Jonah Jones with Dick Hyman and the New Disciples of Rhythm. Philadelphia's Tymes were one of the sweetest vocal groups to ever step into a recording studio. Led by the warm, expressive tenor of George Williams, whose voice and phrasing were heavily influenced by Johnny Mathis, and blessed with a producer at Cameo Parkway Records, Billy Jackson, who knew exactly how to record them, the Tymes hit right out of the box with their debut single, the sparse and elegant ballad "So Much in Love" in 1963. Written by Williams, the song was given a simple, floating arrangement by Jackson that was driven by what would become the group's trademark finger snaps and featuring smooth-as-honey vocals by Williams and fellow group members Al "Ceasar" Barry, George Hilliard, Norman Burnett, and Donald Banks. the Tymes followed this classic with a version of "Wonderful! Wonderful!" (the song that launched Mathis' own career in 1957) that was every bit as strong as "So Much in Love," and completed the hat trick with a third impressive single, "Somewhere." Everything the Tymes recorded with Jackson at Cameo Parkway had this same high quality, and the future looked more than bright, but the group's run on the pop charts pretty much ended with the advent of Beatlemania in 1964, which signaled a sea change in the recording industry. For some reason Cameo Parkway never released the Tymes catalog on CD until 2005, and this collection marks the debut of the Tymes in the digital age, some 40 years after these classic ballads were recorded. Gorgeously arranged and sung, the tracks compiled here have an elegant, timeless quality that works in part because of their simple sparseness, which allows the Tymes plenty of breathing room to do what they do best, which is sing like the angels sing. "So Much in Love," "Wonderful! Wonderful!," and "Somewhere" are all here, along with other gems like "Here She Comes" (one of the few instances where the Tymes go upbeat) and the sublime "The Lamp Is Low." Better late than never, this CD is essential listening for fans of the vocal group genre. ~Steve Leggett

Baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber is an alum of many bands since arriving in New York City in the mid-'60s, including stints with George Benson, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, and the Mingus Big Band, though the big-toned reed player has recorded sporadically as a leader. This is his fourth CD for Steeplechase and one of his best sessions, featuring pianist Helen Sung (who replaced Kenny Drew, Jr. after his departure), fellow Mingus Big Band sideman Boris Kozlov on bass, plus drummer Jonathan Blake. Cuber's approach to his instrument incorporates both the gruffness of Pepper Adams and the lyricism of Gerry Mulligan in a style that is comfortably his own. Six of the ten tracks are jazz compositions, including Scott LaFaro's superb yet rarely recorded "Gloria's Step," which also showcases Sung and Koslov along with the leader. Cuber's blustery yet loping take of Dave Brubeck's "The Duke" almost seems to sing, while the quartet negotiates two demanding bop vehicles (Clifford Brown's "Daahoud" and Charlie Parker's "Ah Leu Cha") with finesse. The heartfelt treatment of Michel Legrand's "Theme from Summer of '42" (also known as "The Summer Knows") and the buoyant, playful setting of Richard Rodgers' "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" bring new light to these familiar standards. ~Ken Dryden

This lady is, without a doubt, the finest singer I've heard in years. She can handle any style, and her unique approach makes each style her own. Her voice is marvelous and her phrasing impeccable, and she hits every note dead-on. There's no "hunting," yet she can "bend" her voice for effect as necessary. This album includes 13 tunes: covers of three Beatles songs ("Across The Universe," "Come Together," and "Here Comes The Sun"); one each from Nina Simone ("Do I Move You?") and Abbey Lincoln ("Throw It Away"); and three written by King herself ("Harry's Fight," "Last Night," and "And Now"). 

The traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" is done with only bass accompaniment; you'll also enjoy a marvelous version of Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover" and the most moving rendition of "All or Nothing at All" that I've ever heard. "Alone Together" isn't far behind, and "The Inchworm" caps things off. She does it all! If her singing weren't enough, King is backed by as tasty and swinging a quartet as you'll ever hear: Bill Anschell on piano; Jeff Johnson on Bass; Craig Flory on sax, bass clarinet and flute; and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. Thank goodness for vocalists like King, who are wise enough to surround themselves with such consummate artists. If you're like me, one of the things that irritates you about 1970s-era jazz-rock fusion is the frequent overproduction, which often came across as an attempt to gussy up the sonics while at the same time dumbing-down the music itself. For this fascinating and brilliant album, guitarist Rez Abbasi takes a handful of classics of the fusion genre and strips away all that stuff, performing them with an acoustic quartet (guitar, vibes, bass, drums) and revealing several of them (notably Weather Report's 'Black Market' and Herbie Hancock's 'Butterfly') to have quite a bit more substance than we might have suspected at the time. On a few tracks Abbasi plays a fretless guitar, which adds a strange and kind of nifty timbral dimension to the group s already unique sound. A must for all jazz collections. ~ Rick Anderson

First time on CD for this expanded edition of the 1981 compilation from the Jazz legend. Maynard Ferguson is one of the premier trumpet players of all time. His legacy leaves a wealth of highly regarded Jazz albums recorded over three decades. This edition adds two rare bonus tracks: 'Rocky II Disco' and 'Gabriel'.

Most of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's recordings for Columbia were rather erratic, alternating very commercial pop performances with occasional jazz selections. This sampler LP reissues eight of the latter, allowing jazz listeners to truly get the "best of" Ferguson from the 1970s. Certainly few but Maynard's greatest fans will want to get his album Hot just for this version of "Naima" or New Vintage for "Airegin." This consistent sampler lets one avoid his more dated material and sticks to the more rewarding jazz. ~Review by Scott Yanow

Brian Hemstock has been living in Chicago for a couple of years now after being the male vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra for over two years, and his first solo album is entitled Handful of Stars. Brian graduated from Western Michigan University in the Spring of 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies: Emphasis in Voice. In August of ’09, Brian auditioned for the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra and began touring the country as their male vocalist in September. While at Western, Brian was a member of Gold Company, an award winning vocal jazz ensemble under the direction of Dr. Stephen Zegree. He also studied with Prof. Diana Spradling, author of Jazz Singing: Developing Artistry and Authenticity, for three years. Working with Gold Company and Prof. Spradling helped Brian become a unique artist in the jazz idiom.

Veteran pianist/composer/educator Andy LaVerne has been a stalwart of the SteepleChase label for almost four decades. 'I Have a Dream' is the sequel to 'Live at the Kitano' from his unique piano/organ trio named One of a Kind, which aptly describes the out-of-the-ordinary nature of the ensemble.

On 'I Have a Dream' they perform six original compositions by Laverne and Herbie Hancock's classic "Cantaloupe Island". C. Saxophonist Jeremy Danneman recorded three albums last year and plans to record another one very soon. Lady Boom Boom is one release to arise from this busy schedule. The front of the album brings a straight-ahead bop feel while the back half dances closer to the funky sounds of his Ropeadope brethren.

Regardless of what you think of the style, Danneman has formed a pretty nifty little band with Tim Kepier on drums, Anders Nilsson on guitar and the mighty William Parker on bass. Lady Boom Boom, assembled from Danneman originals, is allegedly about “atonement, forgiveness, war, peace, liberation, love, death and sex.” And he could have concluded the album with the soulful, bouncy title track, but the elastic jam “The Toothless Old Lady Warns the University Girls About Men” wraps things up over the course of nearly half an hour.~y John Garratt

Jackie McLean - Prestige Profiles (2-Disc Set)

Jackie McLean is the subject of the sixth volume in the Prestige Profiles series. The eight tracks here come from 1956 and 1957. they are deeply bluesy cuts from the later bebop and early hard bop era, and show McLean really stretching himself to come to terms with the new music that was in his head and emerged fully on his later Blue Note recordings. "Strange Blues" is here, along with the lovely "Sentimental Journey" off Volumes 4, 5, and 6, with Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, and Mal Waldron (who appears on five selections here). There's also the fine original "Lights Out," with Byrd, Elmo Hope, Doug Watkins, and Art Taylor. While all the cuts have been previously released, the various bands here showcase McLean's versatility as a leader and, in the case of "Alto Madness," as a co-leader with John Jenkins. This budget-priced set also includes a bonus disc that contains the entire album plus eight other cuts from the profiles series. ~Thom Jurek

Describing the collection of songs on Oslin's first album in five years as diverse is an understatement. It's always nice to hear from Oslin, but this comeback is bittersweet. Too eclectic to call country, too divergent to call pop, the 12 songs on Live Close By, Visit Often are an undefinable mix of various musical styles. Perhaps it was the influence of the Mavericks' frontman, Raul Malo, who served as co-producer. Either way, music doesn't have to be definable or categorized to make it good -- or even interesting -- and Oslin's unmediated vocals are always a pleasure to listen to, no matter what she's singing about. ~Maria Konicki Dinoia

Neil Diamond - All Time Greatest Hits (Deluxe) (2-Disc Set)

All-Time Greatest Hits was released on Capitol Records, a label Neil Diamond never recorded for, but Universal -- who owned the recordings Diamond made for both Uni and MCA -- selected this as the imprint for 2014's All-Time Greatest Hits, a generous collection of hits from the '60s and '70s. A consistent bugaboo with Diamond compilations has been licensing, but this one does a very nice job of sampling from all of Neil's major labels, including Bang, Uni, MCA, and Columbia. The late-'70s hits -- "Forever in Blue Jeans," "Beautiful Noise," "America" -- are scattered throughout the compilation; the Uni/MCA sides ("Cracklin' Rosie," "Sweet Caroline," "Holly Holy," "Shilo," "Play Me") are the anchor of the comp, and the Bang singles are grouped together toward the end. True, the collection might've been better served if it was sequenced chronologically, but this has the vast majority of the big hits, and that's been hard to find in Diamond's catalog. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine
