Rebecca Kilgore is one of America's leading song stylists and is passionate about preserving the vocal jazz of the 30s and 40s, an era which she feels remains unsurpassed in its high quality songwriting and heartfelt lyrics. Her mission is to learn every song from that era, and to swing in the process. With 32 recordings bearing her name, she is well on her way.

Her singing has been enriched through her many associations with jazz greats, especially composer/pianist Dave Frishberg with whom she recorded several CDs in the 1990s. In addition, she has sung at Carnegie Hall at the invitation of Michael Feinstein.

She has become a regular at jazz parties, jazz festivals and jazz cruises throughout the U.S. and Europe. Rebecca has been a frequent guest on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, as well as Riverwalk Jazz, and a guest on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

Curtis DuBois Fuller (born December 15, 1934, Detroit) is an American jazz trombonist, known as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and contributor to many classic jazz recordings.

Fuller's Jamaican-born parents died when he was young; he was raised in an orphanage. While in Detroit he was a schoolfriend of Paul Chambers and Donald Byrd, and also knew Tommy Flanagan, Thad Jones and Milt Jackson. After army service between 1953 and 1955 (when he played in a band with Chambers and brothers Cannonball and Nat Adderley), Fuller joined the quintet of Yusef Lateef, another Detroit musician. In 1957 the quintet moved to New York, and Fuller recorded his first sessions as a leader for Prestige Records.

Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records first heard Fuller playing with Miles Davis in the late 1950s, and featured him as a sideman on record dates led by Sonny Clark and John Coltrane; Fuller's work on the latter's Blue Train album is probably his best-known recorded performance.[citation needed] Fuller led four dates for Blue Note, though one of these, an album with Slide Hampton, was not issued for many years. Other sideman appearances over the next decade included work on albums under the leadership of Bud Powell, Jimmy Smith, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and Joe Henderson (a former room mate at Wayne State University in 1956).

Fuller was also the first trombonist to be a member of the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet, later becoming the sixth man in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1961, staying with Blakey until 1965. In the early 1960s, Fuller recorded two albums as a leader for Impulse! Records, having also recorded for Savoy Records and Epic after his obligations to Blue Note had ended. In the late 1960s, he was part of Dizzy Gillespie's band that also featured Foster Elliott. Fuller went on to tour with Count Basie and also reunited with Blakey and Golson. In 2007 Fuller was named an NEA Jazz Master.

Fuller continues to perform and record, and is a faculty member of the New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) School of Jazz Studies (SJS)

Peter Glessing, born in Frankfurt in 1960, discovered, by the time he was 12, the fascination of jazz itself. Thrilled by a music that stands out because of the scope for Individual tone and improvisation, he first learned the clarinet.

Two years later, he was already an autodidact through "Learning by Hearing" a the tenor saxophone himself. Particularly influential he was by the Texas tenor style of Illinois Jacquet and Arnett Cobb, Peter Glessing developed his own, unmistakably energetic playing style over the years. This offers a virtuoso, refined elaborate recognition and handle technology combined with his versatile tone.
Peter Glessing works intensively with jazz from the 30s to 60s his preference being the "standards" to reinterpret well known songs into a new listening experience. He lives extroverted, rousing performance, preferred 'Head Arrangements "(as from the 50s with Jazz at the Philharmonic, or the smaller formations of Count Basie and Lionel Hampton usual) and always goes back to the limits of what is possible musically.

In early 1976, the ARD become interested in him, followed by other television appearances on ZDF and private broadcasters. In 1980 Peter Glessing played several concerts with the legendary cornet player "Wild Bill" Davisson and jammed in 1988 with Clark Terry and Earl Warren. In 1990 he went on tour with Gene "Mighty Flea" Conners. Peter Glessing was and can be heard in numerous clubs and at many festivals, eg in Burghausen or as a clarinetist at the Frankfurt La Vida New Orleans band at the Jazz Festival Davos and the Plöner Jazz Festival.

In addition to his own projects, Peter Glessing plays regularly with Eddie Kold- Larry Watkins Blues Band, as a guest soloist with the Brass Time Big Band, the Old Jazz Allstars Union or the international "Tribute to Ray Charles" project of Slovenian Soul Entertainers "Perry" Perich.

He studied at the Conservatory of Music N. Piccinni in Bari, graduating in music theory, he studied privately with bassists in jazz world renowned as Ray Brown, Dave Holland, Christian McBride.
Bassi lived in New York city for about four years.
His concert career began in 1988, but starting from 1990 it became assiduous and constant.
He performed in fact in 1991 in the prestigious and historic jazz club “Strange Fruit” in his town Bari. With Roberto Ottaviano, he began to frequent the most important stages of festivals and jazz clubs most representative of all Italy.

Lawrence Brown played trombone off and on with Duke Ellington's orchestra for nearly 40 years. Surprisingly, he only led two albums of his own in his entire career, a set for Impulse in 1965, and this album for Clef (now Verve). Heard either as part of a quintet with tenor saxophonist Sam "The Man" Taylor or with a nonet that includes tenor saxophonist Al Cohn and pianist Hank Jones, Brown is in excellent form on the reissue. The music (not too shockingly) often sounds as if it were an Ellington small group, including such numbers as Brown's longtime feature "Rose of the Rio Grande," "Caravan," "You Took Advantage of Me," and "Blues for Duke." The original LP program is joined by two previously unreleased performances ("Time After Time" and "For All We Know"). Excellent mainstream swing of the 1950s. ~Scott Yanow

Born in Aarhus (Denmark), singer VERONICA MORTENSEN was raised by her mother in Athens, Greece. At the age of 20, she moved back to Denmark to pursue a singing career – a natural choice, being the daughter of 2 musicians. She started her own soulband, a mini-bigband playing Aretha Franklin covers and Motown-classics, and soon after joined the more experimental acidjazzband Virtual Fantasy.

Veronica Mortensen graduated from Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus in the summer of 1996 and took her Diploma exam from Rythmic Conservatory of Copenhagen in 1998. She has performed on several albums and TV-shows, both as a lead singer and as a background vocalist. She also has appeared in rockmusicals like “A tribute to the Blues Brothers”, “Another Brick In The Wall” and “Hair” playing in both Copenhagen and Paris.

The quartet featured in this 1996 recording session for Steeplechase was put together on the spot in New York, just for this date, though Doug Raney and his rhythm section quickly made themselves sound as if they were a regular working group. Raney's approach to the guitar is often spacious on ballads, never too busy on up-tempo numbers, and always focused around the melody. Accompanied by pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Kenny Washington, the quartet's head arrangements of the seven standards on the CD seem to come together effortlessly. The intimate approach to "Skylark" starts slowly, but gives way to a brisk, more complex development of its theme. The rhythm section swirls behind Raney in a driving rendition of "All or Nothing at All," and also features a fine solo by Weiss. Of particular interest is Raney's careful development of "I'm Old Fashioned." Highly recommended. ~Ken Dryden

Sir Roland Hanna was busy in the recording studios during the late '70s, as a number of different labels recognized his tremendous chops in a wide range of styles. Most of this Black & Blue CD is devoted to a trio session with bassist Major Holley and drummer Alan Dawson, kicking off with a brisk take of Cole Porter's "I Love You" and Sigmund Romberg's "Lover, Come Back to Me." Although "Body and Soul" is all but owned by tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins for his famous 1939 record, Hanna turns in a whirlwind solo piano interpretation that stands on its own merit. John Coltrane's "Impressions" is not typically heard in a piano trio setting, but it works wonderfully with Holley's driving bass and Dawson's inventive percussion in support of the leader's furious solo. Hanna's blues-drenched "The Lonely Ones" sounds like the perfect closing timepiece, though the CD reissue of this track is marred by wowing in the master tape. This reissue adds two bonus tracks, a gospel-influenced take of Miles Davis' "All Blues" and the Gershwins' "Isn't It a Pity," taken from an unrelated trio date with bassist George Duvivier and drummer Oliver Jackson. The current "youth" movement in jazz has produced many young artists with exceptional talent and brilliant futures. Saxophonist, pianists, bassists, trumpeters, and trombonists all abound and seem assured of carrying jazz into the 21st century safely with the proper respect and passion. However, for all of the talent distributed across jazz, none has seemed to surface in the guise of a real male jazz singer. Harry Connick and John Pizzarelli had emerged as the heirs to the crooning of Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra, but no heirs seem available to carry on the traditions of Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, and Jimmy Rushing. Until now. With his brilliant new album Another Time Another Place, Kevin Mahogany steps confidently up and assumes the title of heir apparent. And as this album demonstrates, the art of the male jazz singer is in fine hands indeed. With his second album for Warner Brothers, Mahogany takes a turn away from the genre mixing that dominated his first album for the label and plants himself firmly in the spotlight as the next great male jazz singer. From the opening track, an original scatting romp called "Big Rub," Mahogany demonstrates the full gammet of skills for the male jazz singer. On "Big Rub" he scats effortlessly, interplaying with tenor man Joe Lovano as the rhythm section lays down a jumpin' groove. 

On the final track "Parker's Mood / Kansas City" Mahogany opens up and lets loose with the sheer immensity of his voice, recalling the great blues shouters of Kansas City. Mahogany's frequent comparisons with Joe Williams come to mind listening to the end of "Kansas City", as well as during his surprisingly sublime duet with country star Randy Travis, "I Believe She Was Talkin' Bout Me." Travis and Mahogany banter back and forth over the same woman with both men oozing confidence, and Mahogany displaying his strong skills for vocal improvisation. Mahogany's unique ability to mix genre's without sounding trite or lounge-ish have been well documented throughout his short career. However, what Kevin brings new to the table this time is a talent for standards.

 And at that, standards his way. "Nature Boy" swings at a pace reminiscent of Johnny Hartman's versions, and "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" glides gently on, with Mahogany showing off his emotional depth and phrasing. The highlight of the disc though, is Mahogany's vocal version Charles Mingus's tribute to Lester Young "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." Mahogany glides comfortably along with the hauntingly beautiful melody, putting real emotion into the lyrics. Throughout the song Mahogany voice (and Lovano's tenor) transport the listener to a dark and smoky club, near closing time; just the atmosphere the song was meant to portray.Throughout the disc, Mahogany's musical compatriots shine with the same brilliance as the singer. Lovano displays the feel for the tenor that has made him one of the most popular and revered jazzmen today. The rhythm section of Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Ben Wolfe on bass, and Clarence Penn on drums swing and sway as if they've been playing together for years. Special kudos go to guitarist Dave Stryker whose work is reminiscent of Kenny Burrell, with a feathery touch on the ballads and authoritative swing throughout. Chestnut's piano also stands out, showing off his skills as both accompanist and soloist.

Overall, this disc is highly, highly recommended. The art of jazz singing is a difficult one to master. Singing jazz with swing is even harder. Mahogany however, swings and scats confidently, interacting with the other musicians and the song itself. His touch for ballads is confident as well, allowing him to immerse himself fully in the song and its subject, pulling from his voice the big emotions of this big man. Kevin, welcome to the big time. This budget CD is a straight reissue of the Groove Merchant LP, Evergreens, an okay session of overly brief performances of standards. In the liner notes to 2:00 AM Paradise Café, Barry Manilow confessed that the record's concept came to him in a dream and that it's the album for which he'd most like to be remembered. That's some top-shelf comment about an album that seems like a pretty calculated move toward long-term success as a vocal talent, like Mel Tormé or Sarah Vaughan, both of whom duet with him on 2:00 AM. That said, the album does lay down a dusty, late-night groove. Vocally, Manilow is able to sell the concept that this is all taking place in the wee hours inside a half-empty basement cabaret. The shuffling percussion of Shelly Manne is spot on, as are the cool tones of baritone sax man Gerry Mulligan you can just picture the blinking neon from the hotel across the street reflecting in the gold of his horn. Mundell Lowe's electric guitar adds a burst of attitude to the otherwise straightforward "Big City Blues," and Manilow and Bill Mays' piano playing is solid throughout. There's a bit of a problem though, since most every arrangement sounds essentially the same. After about half the record, it begins to seem like it's all happening in slow motion, or at least someone's just going through them. It's refreshing to hear stripped-down arrangements and Manilow experimenting a bit with his delivery to suggest he's singing after the streets have rolled up. The brief life span of classic jazz vocalese singing found its first inspiration in these King Pleasure sides. Pleasure vocalized many bebop solos by the likes of James Moody, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young, often adding his own hip and witty lyrics to the mix. Initially issued on his debut, Moody's Mood for Love, the first eight sides here include solid senders like "Parker's Mood," "Red Top" (based on a Gene Ammons solo and featuring singer Betty Carter), and "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" (Lester Young). Balancing out the boppish fare, Pleasure also delivers ballads like "This Is Always" (featuring the Dave Lambert Singers) and his own composition, "Don't Be Scared" (up-and-coming vocalese star Jon Hendriks guests). Future Hendriks cohort Annie Ross co-headlines this LP, matching Pleasure's best with hits like "Twisted" (Wardell Gray) and "Farmer's Market" (Art Farmer). Her wordless scat feature, "Annie's Lament," is a highlight as well. Yoron leads the Boston based quartet "High Standards", which is featured on his latest release "VISIONS" - The Music of Stevie Wonder. The quartet currently features; Laszlo Gardony - piano/keyboard, Lance Bryant - tenor & soprano saxophones and Henry Lugo - bass, along with special guests Larry Roland - spoken word and Thaddeus Hagarth - harmonica and guitar. This core foursome represents a depth of virtuosity and musical cohesiveness that is infectious. This ensemble is committed to forging ahead "new standards" for the 21st century; adding a personalized perspective to familiar performance, compositional and arrangement references that will become common repertoire of choice for future generations of jazz musicians.

"Basic Traneing", reached number three on the National Jazz chart in 2004. It features his organ trio "Organic" with organist Kyle Koehler, guitarist Ed Cherry, along with special guests Jay Hoggard (vibraphone/ marimba) and Billy Pierce (tenor and soprano saxophone). Yoron's "Organic", performs original compositions and works associated with the soulful musical legacies of Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland and Dr. Lonnie Smith while highlighting the versatility and virtuosity of the trio.

Of the originals, I was smitten with "Mamma's Song" almost as much as :"Miss Celie's Blues" from The Color Purple, which enthralls me every time I hear it. Sorsa's unfettered, playful delivery on this is pure gold. Also appealing are the sexy "A Sleepin' Bee", and a glorious "round Midnight". The arrangement of "You & the Night & the Music" turns the song upside down, inside out, like you have never heard it before. Uniquely lush sounds are present in this one as well as in the captivating finale of the deliciously delirious "Wild is the Wind".

Sorsa is a sassy presence both onstage and on record. That acting style infuses her music, making it a truly special listen.

A long respected sideman in R&B circles, Byron Miller has thus far only had a couple opportunities to lead his own record dates. Although he had started playing piano when he was five, Miller did not take music seriously until he had a football injury while a junior in high school. He soon taught himself bass and keyboards. Shortly after high school Miller joined Roy Ayers' Ubiquity for several years (with whom he recorded several dates). Other associations included Carlos Santana, George Duke (appearing on 14 of his albums), Herbie Hancock, the Crusaders, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and Doc Powell. Byron Miller recorded a pair of CDs in the 1990's as a leader including Until for Discovery.

Mary Coughlan is an Irish jazz, blues and folk singer. She has received great critical acclaim for her emotional and heartfelt renditions. A lot has been written and a lot has been said, whispered, recounted, alleged, supposed and presumed. It’s all quite forgotten now and the songs remain the same, they remain a testament to Mary Coughlan’s seemingly timeless and endless talent. Her smoky, bluesy, boozy drawl has always been a seduction, no matter what the subject. The vocal marrying of sardonic wit, visceral rage, orgiastic between the sheets passion, the tenderest of sorrowful regrets- this is Mary’s talent. Regardless of the elements she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease, Mary’s voice has always been an unforeseen, sudden seduction. This is why she is so loved.

Throughout the over 25 years of her quite extraordinary recording career Mary has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes; Billie Holiday’s grievous, teary outpourings, the husky flirtations of Peggy Lee, Van Morrison’s soulful wails, the defiant chanteusery of Edith Piaf. All are present and correct in her delivery. Even so, Mary, with her naked honesty makes every song her own; they belong to her and nobody else. Who else could possibly present “Double Cross” or “Magdalene Laundry” or “The Ice Cream Man” with such dedication and effortless zeal?

The casual listener may know something of “Ancient Rain”, “Invisible To You” or maybe “Man Of The World”. These may well be among the greatest of Mary’s many great hits, however there is so much more to the story. How about an entire double album dedicated to her love of Billie Holiday. Billie died at 44, the age at which Mary performed songs from the album to sold-out venues and enraptured audiences at her “Lady Sings The Blues” shows staged in Dublin and London.

How about “Live In Galway”, Mary’s triumphant, if anxious, return from the brink to the stage in 1995. At the time she pleaded the venue to host the gig, having to repent for previously letting them down a little too frequently. She had become the “no-show”. Mary sold out 8 gigs in a row. Or “Live At The Basement” recorded in Sydney among an intimate audience in 2003, this is the ultimate in down and dirty jazz club rendition. It’s hard to imagine a more succinct demonstration of both the raw and refined nature of Mary’s talents.
