A distinctive, girlish voice, crisp, impeccable delivery, and an irrepressible sense of playful swing made Blossom Dearie one of the most enjoyable singers of the vocal era. Her warmth and sparkle ensured that she'd never treat standards as the well-worn songs they often appeared in less capable hands. And though her reputation was made on record with a string of excellent albums for Verve during the '50s, she remained a draw with Manhattan cabaret audiences long into the new millennium.

Actually born with the name Blossom Dearie in the New York Catskills, she began playing piano at an early age and studied classical music before making the switch to jazz while in high school. After graduation, she moved to New York and began appearing with vocal groups like the Blue Flames (attached to Woody Herman) and the Blue Reys (with Alvino Rey). She also played cocktail piano around the city, and moved to Paris in 1952 to form her own group, the Blue Stars of France. Dearie also appeared in a nightclub act with Annie Ross, and made a short, uncredited appearance on King Pleasure's vocalese classic, "Moody's Mood for Love." She recorded an obscure album of piano solos, and in 1954, the Blue Stars hit the national charts with a French version of "Lullaby of Birdland."

After hearing Dearie perform in Paris in 1956, Norman Granz signed her to Verve and she returned to America by the end of the year. Her eponymous debut for Verve featured a set of standards that slanted traditional pop back to its roots in Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and cabaret. Her focus on intimate readings of standards ("Deed I Do," "Thou Swell") and the relaxed trio setting (bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones, plus Dearie on piano) drew nods to her cabaret background.

On her next few records, Dearie stuck to her focus on standards and small groups, though her gift for songwriting emerged as well with songs like "Blossom's Blues." She performed in solo settings at supper clubs all over New York, and appeared on the more cultured of the late-'50s New York talk shows. Her husband, flutist Bobby Jaspar, made several appearances on her records, notably 1959's My Gentleman Friend. After a recording break in the early '60s, Blossom Dearie signed to Capitol for one album (1964's May I Come In?), but then recorded sparingly during the rest of the decade.

Finally, in the early '70s, she formed her own Daffodil Records label and began releasing her own work, including 1974's Blossom Dearie Sings and the following year's My Favorite Celebrity Is You. She also performed at Carnegie Hall with Anita O'Day and Joe Williams, billed as the Jazz Singers. She continued to perform and record during the 1980s through to the early 2000s, centered mostly in New York but also a regular attraction in London as well. She retired from playing live in 2006 due to health concerns and died quietly in her Greenwich Village apartment on February 7, 2009. ~by John Bush

"Margo is a high-energy, self-motivated singer...What she does with a melody and a groove is just gorgeous! It's no wonder, she has exploded on to the music scene." ~BBC Radio

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, arranger and producer, Margo Rey, has had a rich career of performance and songwriting, including eight Billboard Top 20 hits over the years. The Roots Of Rey is Margo conceptualizing and embracing her roots as an accomplished Latin Jazz musician, presenting a modern American & Latin American songbook reimagined for the times. Performed by Rey in English and Spanish and arranged by multi-Grammy-winning pianist, Oscar Hernandez (Spanish Harlem Orchestra), the 13 songs cover some of the most memorable work from composers like Leon Russell, Hoagy Carmichael, and Michel LeGrand, and also includes an inspired 10-year anniversary salsa arrangement of Rey's original jazz composition, My Heart's Desire. "...a velvety sensuality within which one can discern a very well trained voice. Fans of Nora Jones and Sade have much to celebrate because the intimate vocalizations of Margo Rey with her rich and sensual voice evokes these figures but in Rey's case, she does it with a personal and modern twist." ~American Airlines Magazine.

12. Let's Go To Abaco! (5:18)
13. Where Or When (3:39)

Steve Hobbs's third CD featuring this quartet is studded with lively compositions, mostly written by him. The paradoxically breezy opener (considering the dark derivation of its title) "The Craving Phenomenon" is an example of this lightness of touch. Hobbs is heard here on marimba as he is on the next track "Into The Storm," a labyrinthine piece played at a helter skelter speed, mostly in 5/4. The standard "Besame Mucho" brings the pace down a little and there's a gripping piano solo from Bill O'Connell. There's a brief self-contained little coda too.

An early Coltrane feel haunts "New Creation" and Adam Kolker's muscular tenor sax certainly adds credence to this groove. "Tres Vias," so named because of its three sections, evinces an innate charm, Hobbs's angular marimba to the fore, is followed by Kolker on soprano and lastly O'Connell on piano. The rock-influenced "Thelonius Funk" shares some similarities with mid-period Frank Zappa when the late iconoclast, experimenting with more complex time signatures employed Ruth Underwood on marimba to great effect. "The Road To Happy Destiny" is an upbeat gospel sounding tune featuring three guest vocalists and replete with a scat solo from Marvin Thorne is followed by a brisk vibes solo from Hobbs. Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" is afforded a gently respectful treatment with Hobbs featured again on vibes.

"El Sueno De Horace Silver" ("The Dream Of Horace Silver") is a Latin-tinged homage to the great man with some restrained hard bop overtones. "In From The Storm," the second and final track to feature the guest vocalists, is a lush bossa nova with Hobbs again on vibes. The penultimate number is a calypso, "Let's Go To Abaco!" and the set concludes with the Rodgers and Hart song "Where Or When" played at a fairly fast tempo. As its title suggests, this CD is a paean to the late, great vibraphone virtuoso Bobby Hutcherson and its seventy five minutes is filled with attractive pieces, expertly executed. Hobbs main instrument throughout is marimba, an instrument less heard in jazz than others, especially in a soloing context, so it makes for an interesting recording. As a side note, Hobbs has troubled to provide a booklet containing no few than thirteen pages of very informative sleeve notes plus photos, which add useful context to the tracks.

Personnel: Steve Hobbs: marimba, vibraphone; Adam Kolker: tenor and soprano saxophones; Bill O’Connell: piano; Peter Washington: bass; John Riley: drums. Carol Ingbretsen, Maurice Myers, Marvin Thorne: vocals.

After a seven-year absence, vocalist/composer/arranger/educator and foremost fan of the Boise State Broncos, Jeff Baker has returned to the studio to add to his already impressive discography, which includes: Baker Sings Chet (OA2, 2004); Monologue (OA2, 2005); Shopping for Your Heart (OA2, 2007); Of Things Not Seen (OA2, 2009).

The distance between the earthy, basic Of Things Not Seen and the present airy and ethereal Phrases is a vast one. Baker increases his instrumentation dramatically, from a quintet on the former to a septet, adding an additional four as a string quartet for several selections. He also pulls all the stops on his composing, having written the majority of the 11 selections included. Foremost of the original compositions are those based on the writings of Pablo Neruda ("Neruda"), JD Salinger ("Salinger"), and Salvador Plascencia ("People of Paper"). Baker's melodies are lofty and light and his voice, solid with a rich hint of androgyny, meld well with the lyrics garnered.

"Ballad of the Sad Young Men" is nearly perfect in its adaptation to the surrounding material. Pianist Darrell Grant does an admirable job keeping this recording's light-as-air approach aloft and moving forward. It is a recognition of Baker's talent that he attracts bassist Clark Sommers and alto saxophonist Steve Wilson into his creative fray. Baker arrived years ago. It is now time for us to pay attention.

Personnel: Jeff Baker, voc; Marquis Hill, tpt; Geof Bradfield, ts; Steve Wilson, as; Gregory Uhlmann, g; Clark Sommers, b; Brian Blade, d.; plus Blaise Magniere, violin; Marie Wang, violin; Anthony Devroye, viola; Cheng-Hou Lee, cello.

Queen Porter Stomp use their dirty swamp magic to shirk those Prohibition blues – swinging skirts and scuffed shoes for hardwood and concrete dancefloors alike. This is jazz where swing is the key you play, Melody is your gypsy mistress, and signature is what you’re trying to avoid committing to paper until you have a shot of bootlegged whisky. They pack horns that scream straight into your soul, squeezed tight into a caravan they’ve taken up and down and through the smoke and mud of the festival circuit (like the Falls Festival), supporting the hardened and never weary (like Charles Bradley).

Swagger comes from a rhythm section borne of cut-throat jazz chops and a banjo that can exorcise demons on the wrong side of midnight. Amongst all this well honed haze comes the clarity and seduction of the ukulele songstress upfront. Shine those shoes and undo that top button – if you’re just tapping those toes, then you’re in the wrong bar.

This is Queen Porter’s joint.

Louis Leo Prima (December 7, 1910 – August 24, 1978) was an Italian American singer, actor, songwriter, bandleader, and trumpeter. While rooted in New Orleans jazz, swing music, and jump blues, Prima touched on various genres throughout his career: he formed a seven-piece New Orleans-style jazz band in the late 1920s, fronted a swing combo in the 1930s and a big band group in the 1940s, helped to popularize jump blues in the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s, and performed as a Vegas lounge act in the late 1950s and 1960s.[citation needed]

From the 1940s through the 1960s, his music further encompassed early R&B and rock'n'roll, boogie-woogie, and even Italian folk music, such as the tarantella. Prima made prominent use of Italian music and language in his songs, blending elements of his Italian identity with jazz and swing music. At a time when "ethnic" musicians were often discouraged from openly stressing their ethnicity, Prima's conspicuous embrace of his Italian ethnicity opened the doors for other Italian-American and "ethnic" American musicians to display their ethnic roots

Over the years, there have been plenty of Al Stewart collections, most featuring the same five or six songs, giving the impression that he's an easy artist to compile. That, however, isn't quite the case. Most of these collections are haphazardly assembled, focusing either on his early elaborate historical story songs or his lush productions of the late '70s and early '80s, choosing songs that were not necessarily hits and not necessarily good showcases for his idiosyncratic gifts. Despite its nondescript (and misleading) title and its cover art, which bewilderingly mimics the cover of Year of the Cat, Rhino's 2004 collection Greatest Hits is the first to truly to capture Stewart at his best, from his baroque British folk-rock in the late '60s to his soft rock hits a decade later. While all his American hits are here, this is more of a "best of" than a hits compilation, since it doesn't follow the charts and zeroes in on songs that capture his precious, sighing, sophisticated, lightly psychedelic and elaborately produced progressive folk-pop. It bypasses such dirges as "Nostradamus," which often appears on Stewart comps even if it's a bore, and includes such gems as the swinging '60s side "Bedsitter Images," "Electric Los Angeles Sunset," the wonderful "You Don't Even Know Me" (from Orange, one of his finest albums but one of the most overlooked), and "Carol" before settling into the familiar hits -- "Year of the Cat," "Lord Grenville," "On the Border," "Song on the Radio," "Time Passages," "Midnight Rocks" -- that all sound better here than on other hits collections because the context is right. Year of the Cat and Time Passages remain noteworthy albums in their own right, as do Orange and 24 Carrots, but as a career overview and introduction, this Greatest Hits is nearly perfect. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Art Pepper - You Go To My Head (Parts 1 & 2)

Despite a remarkably colorful and difficult life, Art Pepper was quite consistent in the recording studios; virtually every recording he made is well worth hearing. In the 1950s, he was one of the few altoists (along with Lee Konitz and Paul Desmond) who was able to develop his own sound despite the dominant influence of Charlie Parker. During his last years, Pepper seemed to put all of his life's experiences into his music and he played with startling emotional intensity.

After a brief stint with Gus Arnheim, Pepper played with mostly black groups on Central Avenue in Los Angeles. He spent a little time in the Benny Carter and Stan Kenton orchestras before serving time in the military (1944-1946). Some of Pepper's happiest days were during his years with Stan Kenton (1947-1952), although he became a heroin addict during that period. The '50s found the altoist recording frequently both as a leader and a sideman, resulting in at least two classics (Plays Modern Jazz Classics and Meets the Rhythm Section), but he also served two jail sentences stemming from drug offenses in 1953 and 1956. Pepper was in top form during his Contemporary recordings of 1957-1960, but the first half of his career ended abruptly with long prison sentences that dominated the '60s. His occasional gigs between jail terms found him adopting a harder tone influenced by John Coltrane that disturbed some of his longtime followers. He recorded with Buddy Rich in 1968 before getting seriously ill and seeking rehabilitation at Synanon (1969-1971). Pepper began his serious comeback in 1975 and the unthinkable happened: Under the guidance and inspiration of his wife Laurie, Pepper not only recovered his former form, but topped himself with intense solos that were quite unique; he also enjoyed playing clarinet occasionally. His recordings for Contemporary and Galaxy rank with the greatest work of his career. Pepper's autobiography Straight Life (written with his wife) is a brutally honest book that details his sometimes horrifying life. Art Pepper died of a cerebral hemorrhage on June 15, 1982 at the age of 56. ~bio by Scott Yanow

A flute-bass duo is not an everyday occurrence on CD, let alone making up an entire release. Yet the combination of Jeremy Steig and Eddie Gomez in this 1975 concert works extremely well because of the virtuoso talent of both musicians, along with their obviously compatibility. They previously had worked together on the Bill Evans' album What's New and Gomez had recently departed Evans at the time of this recording. Unfortunately, there are no liner notes to explain how this meeting came about or the background of the selections, while the 24-bit remastering and new packaging featuring amusing sketches of the two men by Steig make this edition more valuable than the earlier CD reissue. Three of the originals sound improvised rather than composed, except for "Autumn Comes, Autumn Leaves," which is obviously derived from the standard, opening with Gomez's solo variations of the well-known song, along with an intense, introspective rendition of "Nardis," though the bassist's brief use of an electronic delay sounds rather dated. Each man has a solo number; Steig's elegant, somewhat free-form "Nightmare" recalls Eric Dolphy's adventurous spirit, while Gomez's dramatic "Arioso" features his playing exclusively with a bow. Although this may very well have been a one-time event, it is much more than a novelty. Considering how little Steig has been recorded as a leader since the late '70s, this session should be of special interest to his fans.~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/outlaws-mw0000094183

The Soul of O.V. Wright isn't fancy, but it gets the job done. In that way, this solid 18-track compilation is just like its subject, one of the most underrated deep soul singers of his era. Although the Houston-based Wright had the grit of Otis Redding (minus Redding's occasional tendency to oversing) and the spiritual grace of Sam Cooke's pre-secular work, Wright only managed a couple of major hits on the R&B charts, and not even his best single, 1965's startling, Ray Charles-like ballad "'You're Gonna Make Me Cry,'" crossed over to the pop charts. Regardless, all 18 tracks here are sublime deep soul, from the testifying swing of his first single "'I Don't Want to Sit Down'" to his remarkable work with Willie Mitchell in the '70s. ("'I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled and Crazy'" is every bit the equal of any of Mitchell's better-known work with Al Green from the same period.) There is plenty more to savor where this came from, but The Soul of O.V. Wright is a terrific introduction to this amazing performer.

A surprisingly great meeting between Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Smith – and a set that's one of Jimmy's standout small combo sessions for Verve! The feel here is much more Jimmy Smith at Blue Note than some of the bigger group Verve dates of the 60s – and Kenny Burrell's sensitive guitar lines provide wonderful company for Smith on the date – shading in his Hammond lines with a nice sense of color, in ways that really fit the late nite setting of the record. Other players on the date include either Bill English or Mel Lewis on drums, George Duvivier or Milt Hinton on bass, Vince Gambella on guitar, and Art Marotti on percussion – and titles include "Kenny's Sound", "Blues For Del", "Blue Bash", "Travelin", and "Soft Winds".

Bass – Jay Leonhart; Drums – Mark Taylor; Piano – Eddie Higgins. Recorded at Clinton Studio, N.Y, October 14-17, 2006.

A solid bop-based pianist, Eddie Higgins has never become a major name, but he has been well-respected by his fellow musicians for decades. After growing up in New England, he moved to Chicago, where he played in all types of situations before settling in to a long stint as the leader of the house trio at the London House (1957-1969). Higgins moved back to Massachusetts in 1970 and went on to freelance, often accompanying his wife, vocalist Meredith D'Ambrosio, and appearing at jazz parties and festivals. Eddie Higgins has led sessions of his own for Replica (1958), Vee-Jay (1960), Atlantic, and Sunnyside; back in 1960, he recorded as a sideman for Vee-Jay with Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter.

Fifty-five years after Patti LaBelle scored her first hit, she released her first purely jazz album -- a surprise given the singer's roots in the genre and the diversity of her recordings since the early '60s. Co-produced with Jamar Jones, a fellow Philadelphian who has worked with Boyz II Men, Jill Scott, and numerous top-tier gospel artists, Bel Hommage features a smart selection of songs vigorously performed with over a dozen musicians including a horn section. Predominantly acoustic, the set is lively throughout, winding through fiery ballads like "Wild Is the Wind," the bluesier likes of "Moanin'," and rollicking culinary numbers such as "Peel Me a Grape" and "I Can Cook." (Perhaps Al Jarreau's "Sweet Potato Pie" would have been too funky and obvious.) LaBelle is expressive as ever. When she reaches the "And I know you cheat" line in "Don't Explain," she sounds like she might be holding a freshly sharpened knife behind her back. "Song for Old Lovers," a Jacques Brel/Gérard Jouannest composition that requires very specific life experience to be interpreted convincingly, is one of LaBelle's most restrained, pained, and affectionate performances. Those who just want to hear her let it rip get it on versions of "The Jazz in You" and "Go to Hell."

The Seekers, one of the most popular bands in the UK in the mid-sixties, formed in Australia in 1963. Originally a trio comprising of Athol Guy (double bass), Keith Podger (guitar) and Bruce Woodley (guitar), they were later joined by Judith Durham in 1964 who completed their now familiar line up. Selling millions of albums, and competing with the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the charts, The Seekers material runs from classic pop to traditional folk ballads along with covers of songs by Dylan, Bob Gibson, Paul Simon, Tom Paxton and John Phillips, among others.

The Seekers Greatest Hits includes an astonishing 8 top 20 singles, 4 of which debuted at number 1, and reminds us why the UK originally fell for this timeless group and why they were one of the most successful groups of the sixties.

Tony Monaco: Hammond B-3 Organ; Louis Tsamous: Drums; Dereck Dicenzo: Guitar; Sarah Morrow: Trombone; Donny McCaslin: Tenor Saxophone; Kenny Rampton: Trumpet.

Tony Monaco's first recording, Burnin' Grooves (Summit 304, 2000) was very good. Half recorded with his own trio and half with his buddy's, Joey DeFrancesco, Grooves displays a prodigious and encyclopedic talent in the ways of the Hammond B-3. Earthy and Bluesy in one breath and sophisticated and erudite in the next, Monaco's playing can only be characterized as what happens the 1950's greasy sensibilities meets a twenty-first century funk and roll. As fine a recording as Burnin' Grooves might be; it was merely a warm up to Monaco's next recording, Master Chops T.

Master Chops T employs Monaco's regular trio augmented with tenorist Donny McCaslin, Trombonist Sarah Morrow, and trumpeter Kenny Rampton. The results are an expansion of Monaco's overall sound. All of the players concerned can turn the grease on and off, however the mood may strike them. "Acid Wash" is a nice roll in the hay, with McCaslin soloing in a well-behaved, almost prim fashion over Monaco's metastatic, funky groove. Monaco himself is demonic on the opener, taking a walk on the wild side with his B-3. Break forward one track and McCaslin, not known as a blues player, show his wares in that department. "White Dude Special" is a strolling blues where any lack of grease in the opener is made up for with a trap full. "Ya Bay BEE" is Jimmy Smith, Lee Morgan, and Tina Brooks circa 1955 shot into the year 2002. This is a splendid chitlin meal at the roadhouse, full of tasty rhythms and grooves. Mr. Monaco pulls out his first love, the accordion, for "Gramp's Blues." This instrument adds a soulful, ethnic quality to the blues. His trio provides just enough support to him. Guitarist Dereck Dicenzo plays the steel drums on sonny Rollins's "St. Thomas" that sounds so authentic, the listener will need a fruity drink with an umbrella in it.

On Burnin' Grooves, Monaco tried out his new reconstituted vocal cords (repairing damage from the Neuralgic Amyotrophy) on "Girl Talk." His voice was earnest, forthright, and perfectly tuned. On the present recording, Monaco sings two songs. The first is a "Luck Be A Lady" to make Sinatra proud, and a funky, jazzy "Me and Mrs. Jones." His control and confidence in high supply this outing. Monaco provides a surprise ending to the disc by covering The Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces." The sum of all parts, Master Chops T is superior to Burnin' Grooves, but do not think that one should do with out the earlier release. Very little music of this quality is being produced, particularly in the B-3 arena. Both recordings point the direction that organ trio jazz is going. Tony Monaco's name could be included with all modern B-3 players: DeFrancesco, Larry Goldings, and Jeff Palmer. Tony Monaco is Really here. ~C. Michael Bailey

Paul Carrack was pop music's ultimate journeyman. A vocalist and keyboardist who enjoyed considerable success over the course of his lengthy career while in the service of bands ranging from Ace to Squeeze to Mike + the Mechanics, his finest work often came at the expense of his own identity as a performer; indeed, of the many big hits on which the unassuming singer was prominently featured, only one, 1987's "Don't Shed a Tear," bore his own name. Carrack was born April 22, 1951, in Sheffield, England; he joined the pub rock group Ace in 1972, eventually writing and singing their debut single, "How Long." After reaching the Top 20 in the group's native Britain, the record hit the number three position in the U.S.; however, after subsequent material failed to match the success of "How Long," Ace disbanded in 1977, and Carrack signed on with Frankie Miller.

He soon resurfaced in Roxy Music, appearing on the LPs Manifesto and Flesh and Blood before releasing his solo debut, Nightbird, in 1980. Carrack next joined Squeeze, replacing keyboardist Jools Holland; in addition to contributing to the group's 1981 creative pinnacle East Side Story, he also assumed lead vocal duties on the single "Tempted," their best-known hit. However, Carrack's stay in Squeeze was brief, and after working with Nick Lowe he again attempted to forge a solo career with the 1982 LP Suburban Voodoo, cracking the U.S. Top 40 with the single "I Need You." A tenure as a sideman with Eric Clapton followed, and in 1985 he joined Genesis' Mike Rutherford in his side project Mike + the Mechanics. Their hits include "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" and "All I Need Is a Miracle." ~Jason Ankeny
