With a clutch of 'best vocalist' awards to her name plus plaudits aplenty, Clare Teal is surely now established. Paradisi Carousel is her seventh album, the second since her Sony contract garnered publicity as the most lucrative ever for a British jazz singer. In light of that, it may be no surprise that the music here is as much pop as it is jazz; indeed, Teal herself cites Burt Bacharach, Dusty Springfield and The Carpenters as points of comparison. And rightly so; on the opener, “Baby, I’m Coming Home”, Teal’s phrasing and intonations sound uncannily like Karen Carpenter.

On this evidence, Teal’s voice is heard to best effect on ballads and songs laden with emotion, being perfect to express a sense of loss and yearning as on “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying”. While she easily handles a more bombastic brass-driven arrangement like “Breakout” – which doubtless goes down a storm in concert - its relative lack of emotion does not play to her strengths. The four Teal originals included here demonstrate her growing prowess as a songwriter, and suggest that she writes material ideally suited to those strengths, with the title track and “Stay With Me” being particularly strong.

Teal is renowned for cover versions that reinvent the original – witness her earlier radical rethinking of The Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming”. Here, she does something similar with The Four Tops classic “Reach Out (I’ll Be There)”, slowing it down dramatically and changing the mood from one of joyous celebration to hopeful longing. By comparison, her version of Pentangle’s “Light Flight” stays very close to the original; with its complex rhythms, it allows Teal to demonstrate her vocal technique, but this version doesn’t establish its own identity.

Existing fans of Teal are likely to be more than satisfied with this album. It may also appeal to the burgeoning audience for pop-jazz singers such as Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae. ~John Eyles

Most of Carla Bley's earliest compositions were first recorded by her then-husband, pianist Paul Bley, during the first half of the 1960s. For this 1991 trio date with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jeff Williams, Bley revisits ten of his former wife's songs, most of which date from the early era. While "Ida Lupino" has been explored in more definitive fashion by Bley elsewhere, his versions of such songs as "Vashkar," "Seven," "Turns" and "Ictus" work quite well. The music falls somewhere between advanced bop and the avant-garde, often swinging but with surprising turns and twists and often-unusual chord sequences. An intriguing set. ~by Scott Yanow

Some of the people he has recorded with are Ray Mantilla, Ron Naspo, Rich Austin, Vinnie Cutro and many more. A few of the musicians Bob has performed live with are Joe Morello, Bill Crow, Eliot Zigmond, Max Weinberg, Andrew Cyrille, and Lisle Atkinson.

Bob has been a commisioned composer for the NJMTA, The National Federation of Music Clubs and has piano pieces published by Manduca Music Publications, The Piano Teachers Press, and The Voice of the Rockies. He has been voted favorite artist on Sky Jazz.com, Anima Jazz in Italy and has been a guest on Around New York on WNYC, Mozart To Motorhead, and Anything Goes radio shows. Instead of one solo after another, the three musicians enter into a dialogue where each can contribute and respond as he wishes. Although the 3 Sounds initially recorded for Riverside, then switching to Blue Note for a solid run of recordings, this one is their first album for Verve. It was recorded in Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio over a four day period (12 through 15 October 1962.) I have no idea why this album took so long, but it's interesting to note that Blue Gene was recorded in two parts, and one track during that session - Let Me Off Uptown - never made it into the album.

It was also their fifteenth album in four years, which shows how prolific and popular they were. They were also popular on the jazz club circuit and the tracks on this album reflect what they were playing to those audiences. Like their other albums, this one is a swinging, blues-infused collection of jazz piano trio tracks that have this group's distinctive sound. If you are a fan you are sure to love it. ~Moke Tarrano

There may never be another Chet Baker, but on this particular night in Zagreb, poor Baker was not playing his best: His chops are weak, and his voice is strained and shallow. Still, these four duos, with longtime collaborator, guitarist Philip Catherine, have their rewards, such as the lengthy, substantial, and melodic solos by the guitarist. There is also the opportunity to hear Baker's piano playing at length. On piano, Chet Baker was even sparser than on trumpet, perhaps due to his weaker technique on the former. As with the trumpet, though, his choice of notes was always immaculate, and Baker fans will want this disc for the novelty of his piano playing. Already a student of Ran Blake at the New England Conservatory, Dominique Eade comes to this incision after two decades of professional careers, in which he has widely proved his skills, collaborating and recording with prestigious musicians. His first album dates back to 1990 (The Ruby And The Pearl) and he saw it together with the drummer Alan Dawson and the pianist Stanley Cowell. Since then he has released four more CDs (My Resistance Is Low, Long Way Home and Open) accompanied by musicians like Bruce Barth, George Mraz, Lewis Nash, Fred Hersch, Dave Holland, Victor Lewis. This incision in duo with Ran Blake implies a clear responsibility, for the immediate reference with the legendary work (The Newest Sound Around) that the pianist recorded in 1961 with the singer Jeanne Lee. Eade's vocal characteristics are those of the white tradition close to the (however revised) models of June Christy and Sheila Jordan. A comparison with that incision would therefore not be appropriate but the underlying syntax, unadorned and hallucinated, returns. The aesthetic is obviously that of Ran Blake, which Dominique Eade makes his own and proposes again with intensity and participation: the meeting ground are often famous ballads, dashed by the voice in a languid and bleeding way, that the dissonant harmonies and the timbric contrasts of the piano they illuminate a sinister and disturbing light. These are the most engaging episodes in a path that can sometimes be unfriendly. Hampton Hawes Quartet - All Night Session, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3.

Originally issued on three LPs, the music resulting from Hampton Hawes' All Night Session! was stereophonically recorded for the Contemporary label in Los Angeles on the night of November 12 and into the morning of November 13, 1956. This session transcended the conventions of studio production by moving steadily from one tune to the next like a live gig with no alternate takes. Here is West Coast bop at its most spontaneous and exciting. Prior to this highly successful quartet experiment, Hawes had recorded mainly with his trio. He said that the addition of guitarist Jim Hall opened up more rhythmic possibilities. The currents passing between Hawes and bassist Red Mitchell were the metabolic pulse of this group; drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman was a replacement for Chuck Thompson, whose heroin habit had forced him out of the band earlier that year. On this night Hawes chose to reinterpret no less than four Dizzy Gillespie compositions, along with themes by Duke Ellington and Duke Jordan as well as six chestnuts from the standard jazz repertoire. But there's nothing "standardized" about this music. Like his main influence, Charlie Parker, Hampton Hawes was a strikingly inventive blues-based improviser; this element is strongly present throughout, particularly during five spontaneously composed Hawes originals that materialized during this monumentally creative All Night Session! Bassist Steve LaSpina (b. March 24, 1954 in Texas) is one of the leading figures of New York’s jazz scene today. A straightforward acoustic jazz trio album, 2018's Seymour Reads the Constitution! nonetheless holds surprises for longtime Brad Mehldau fans. Moving away from his genre-bending collaboration with Chris Thile and his equally cross-pollinated exploration of J.S. Bach's classical pieces, After Bach, Mehldau settles into this warmly rendered set of originals and covers that fits nicely into his overall discography. Joining the pianist are his longtime associates bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard. Together, they've recorded often since the early 2000s, with Grenadier having worked regularly with Mehldau since the mid-'90s. Consequently, they play with an almost preternatural sensitivity, accenting each other's lines and swinging with an easy, mutative pulse. It's a sound that brings to mind Keith Jarrett, whose iconic trio is a clear touchstone for Mehldau here. The influence is especially felt on the aptly named Mehldau original "Spiral," in which the pianist lays down a descending circular theme in a roiling time signature that has the dreamy feel of riding on a train with your eyes closed. 

They conjure an equally Jarrett-esque vibe on their sophisticated reading of Sam Rivers' classic "Beatrice," with Mehldau moving in and out of tonality during his kinetic, serpentine solo. As intense as that track can be, it never gets out of hand. In fact, much of the album has a balmy, laid-back quality as if it were recorded during a sunny afternoon at home. That sunny atmosphere is also at the core of the title track, in which Mehldau and Grenadier often share the melody, bumping up against each other in a bluesy dance. Elsewhere, they launch into a sprightly rendition of the Lerner & Loewe standard "Almost Like Being in Love" and offer up a bright, waltz-like take on the Beach Boys' "Friends," the latter of which is so friendly you can almost sense Mehldau and his bandmates smiling at each other. ~ Matt Collar https://www.allmusic.com/album/seymour-reads-the-constitution%21-mw0003166661

While the material is basically set up to let Stitt and Roy Eldridge trade off improvisations, when it is these two the result is energetic and totally worthwhile. Eldridge adds a great deal to the date, taking the music back (in feeling) a little bit to an earlier era. He also seems to push Stitt to keep his game at a high level, which he sometimes needed. Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown are their usual first-rate selves. ~Drew Fields

“The String,” is note for note the same as his “Eternal Triangle.” The two horns are quite combative and inspire each other. This is the first time Sonny Stitt and Roy Eldridge have recorded together. Roy, who has reservations about several of the “modernists” in jazz, says of Sonny: “He really comes from the old school. He just kept up. Sonny can get into the meat of a piece where some of the other younger cats can’t. And his time.is really good.”

Here’s a high–energy blowing session by a quintet of Swedes whose radiant concepts have been harvested from the often–plowed but unremittingly productive realm of bop. In a blindfold test, one would not only be hard–pressed to identify their country of origin but even to declare with any degree of certainty that they are not based in, say, New York City or southern California (Andersson, who wrote and arranged all the songs on the disc, even pays tribute to one of the latter area’s Jazz proving grounds with the happy–go–lucky “Hermosa Beach”). Andersson reminds me of any number of talented young tenormen from the States (think Eric Alexander, Bob Mintzer, Chris Potter et al), and the same can be said of his trumpet–playing front–line partner, Lundgren (not far removed from Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell and so on). Jazz — and this is especially true of its bop–based dialect — has assuredly become an international language, and these European wunderkinds speak it about as fluently as anyone, as do the members of their assiduous and always–supportive rhythm section. As for Andersson’s compositions, they swing with gusto and are about as well–crafted and admirable as any you can envision. The Jazz Messengers would be quite comfortable playing them, as would such contemporary groups as Alexander’s New York–based sextet, One for All. As we said, Andersson knows how to use the language, and his breezy charts are perfectly tailored to harmonize with the quintet’s gregarious point of view. If you’d like to hear some marvelous straight–ahead Jazz and don’t much care where it’s from, climb aboard the Flying Carpet and let this impressive ensemble from far–off Sweden take you on a ride you won’t soon forget. ~Jack Bowers

For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group, Brasil '66, regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio stations, both rock and easy listening, and he gave his label, A&M, something to offer light jazz listeners beyond the work of the company's co-founder, Herb Alpert. During this period, he also became an international music star and one of the most popular musicians in South America.

Born in 1931 in Juazeiro in the northeastern state of Brazil known as Bahia, João Gilberto seemed obsessed with music almost from the moment he emerged from the womb. His grandfather bought him his first guitar at age 14 (much to the dismay of João's father). Within a year, the result of near constant practicing, he was the leader of a band made up of school friends. During this time Gilberto was absorbing the rhythmic subtlety of the Brazilian pop songs of the day, while also taking in the rich sounds of swing jazz (Duke Ellington and Tommy Dorsey), as well as the light opera singing of Jeanette MacDonald. At 18, Gilberto gave up on his small town life and headed to Bahia's largest city, Salvador, to get a foothold in the music industry performing on live radio shows.

Long considered a very valuable pianist, arranger, and conductor behind the scenes, whether accompanying singers (including his classic recordings with Irene Kral) or as part of bands (most notably Charlie Haden's Quartet West), Alan Broadbent tends to be underrated as a pianist/leader. In the Los Angeles area he occasionally performs in clubs where his trio work is quite spontaneous. For 'Round Midnight, he simply gathered together two of his favorite players (bassist Brian Bromberg and drummer Joe LaBarbera), decided on a list of tunes (including two of his originals), and played. Although the results are quite logical, nothing was arranged in advance. It just worked out this perfectly on a moment's notice. Whether swinging on bebop standards, digging into J.J. Johnson's "Lament," or transforming "Serenata" into jazz, everything works well on this easily recommended trio outing. ~Scott Yanow

Bobby Selvaggio's Grass Roots Movement, marks his sixth release as leader and second outing for Arabesque Records. This quintet record follows his 2009 disc Modern Times, recorded with veteran pianist Kenny Werner. Here, the saxophonist employs some new names, an electric groove, but no worries, the musicianship retains the highest standards. Here he switches on the power with an electric ensemble, where only drummer James Johnson is unplugged. He might as well be plugged in, however, because he animates the affair throughout. His funky drumming opens the disc with "No Turn On Red," a vehicle for Selvaggio to show off his best Maceo Parker imitation. The saxophonist and guitarist Nir Felder match licks lockstep, here and throughout the recording. On the pecking "Chicken Legs" the two create an intricate barnyard dance, with pianist Frank LoCrasto's knobby Fender Rhodes acting as an exciting feed for the composition. Selvaggio gives plenty of room for Felder to strut his stuff, the guitarist favoring crisp notes and an economical approach. His solo on "Dust Bunnies" turns from gregarious showman to thoughtful improviser. Like Selvaggio, the guitarist has a keen sense of economy of notes, even if the pair is brining the funk. On "Return To Sender" groove is the force driving the quintet. Felder's slippery quick guitar lines coat the road for Selvaggio to bark some honking lines over rear-shaking pulse.
