Though a new season is on the horizon, we might consider ourselves residents of a post-Treme culture. Our central narratives, historic touchstones, and musical traditions are now common knowledge to millions of viewers. The world’s flame for New Orleans burns everlasting, but Mardi Gras Indians were on cable and the shadows of mystery recede accordingly. Documentation of the city perseveres, but the congealing effect of an HBO show places the onus on other voices to tell new stories about this old place.

As the man behind the show’s theme song, John Boutté is uniquely suited to speak at this crossroads. On All About Everything, produced by Treme musical supervisor Blake Leyh, the singer holds fast to his identity: a medium for the spirit, his voice shaped by pride and perspective. Hard to know if many revelations remain unturned in Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” or Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life.” Certainly we have traveled to the river quite often in 6-plus years of homegrown recordings. While Boutté masters all of the above, his treatments of original compositions by local artists are the heart of the album.

The Alex McMurray-penned “Heaven’s Door” boasts Jon Cleary on keys, Matt Perrine on sousaphone, and Dr. Michael White on clarinet. If anyone is worried about this city’s ability to foster new music with both traditional depth and mass appeal, send them McMurray. “War is All Over” is vintage but previously unreleased Allen Toussaint (“and everyone and nobody won”), while Paul Sanchez’s “A Thousandfold” is a solid reggae train ride. (Someone ought to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund an album of Boutté performing Desmond Dekker songs.)

Sooner or later, the last episode of the last season of Treme will air and fade to DVD sales. There will be a musical montage and “See You on the Other Side” should be the backing track. Co-writers Boutté, Leyh, Tom McDermott and Sanchez wave goodbye masterfully. We live on the other side of the narrative’s wall, a good three to four years ahead of the story as told on television. Our tale was told; our tale still unfolds. Carried by a battalion of the city’s finest artists and confident in his role as clarion, John Boutté does a fine job of moving forward.~ Brian Boyles https://www.offbeat.com/music/john-boutte-all-about-everything-independent/

Floyd Domino is an American musician known for his work in the genre of Western swing.

Born a native of California, Domino was introduced to Western swing by way of the musicians who had migrated from Texas and Oklahoma in the 1930s and 1940s. Floyd’s close association with Western swing coincided with joining Asleep at the Wheel at the age of 19. After 7 years with Asleep at the Wheel, he is now an “AATW Alumnus” who still joins them for featured performances. While Floyd is widely recognized for his years with Asleep at the Wheel and the revival of Western swing, Floyd began his career with a broad grounding in jazz, boogie-woogie, swing and blues piano. He regularly performs as Floyd Domino Jazz Trio showcasing a unique blend of jazz and blues. Other performances include work with Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Strait, The Texas Playboys, Waylon Jennings, jazz guitarist.

In addition to a career encompassing live performances, recording (both solo and with a host of legendary performers), Floyd has contributed to promoting American roots music through his appearances at schools, camps and other learning organizations. Between his touring, recording and major performances, Floyd plays clubs, private events and contributes his talents to further roots music appreciation. https://peoplepill.com/people/floyd-domino

Here's two better than average quality home recordings of the Casa Loma Band taken from the Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove, NJ, from two weekend shows in March of 1940. Glenn never had any big-name players in his outfit (unless you count guys like Pee Wee Hunt and Murray McEachern in the trombone section), but the band played with a precision and swing that was mesmerizing. It was also a self-contained band, in the sense that there were no add-on boy or girl singers, the vocalizing being handled by reedman Kenny Sargent or trombonist Hunt. The reed section of the Casa Loma Orchestra was its true secret weapon, with the players doubling, tripling, and quadrupling on clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, alto, tenor, soprano, baritone, and bass saxophones. Chart wise, the band moves effortlessly on these broadcasts, from its theme of "Smoke Rings" to swingers like "Tuxedo Junction," "Honeysuckle Rose," and "How High the Moon" to novelties like "Wham!" to heavyweight material like "Prelude in C Sharp Minor." A well-rounded band that was one of the true innovators of the big-band era, the Casa Loma Orchestra is one of the hidden treasures from this era just waiting to be discovered. Well worth investigating.~ Cub Koda https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-from-the-meadowbank-ballroom-cedar-grove-nj-1940-mw0000608651

"We've all experienced it: that special atmosphere before a concert begins. At Copenhagen Jazzhouse, many come early. They reserve the best seats with a piece of clothing and retreat to the bar to buy a beer and exchange a few words with musicians and friends, then return to their seat, anticipation growing. Some look around and notice that all the jazz critics are in attendance. In fact, it seems everyone is here this evening. In the final minutes, lights are dimmed and the intermission music turned off. Lars Thorborg, who runs Jazzhouse, takes the stage and introduces Rosa and the band. It's about to happen!

The group comes on stage to enthusiatic applause and there she is - with us, right before us. With no further ado, the tempo is counted off and the concert begins. The band line-up couldn't have been better: Fabio Torres on piano, Paulu Paulelli on bass, and Celso de Almeida on drums and of course Rosa Passos on vocals and guitar. Influenced by tenor sax masters of the Swing-Era (Hawkins, Young,Webster) His work has received great praise by the media, regarding Peidro as an inventive player with a beautiful sound. https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/make-someone-happy

The name may be hard to pronounce (try Busha-kevitch) but Richard’s playing is certainly easy on the ear! He started playing the piano at the age of six, and by his late teens was performing frequently in top London hotels and restaurants, and starting to become known on the jazz scene. Richard is now recognized as one of the country’s top jazz pianists, performing not only with other leading British players but with many visiting American musicians including some of the biggest names in jazz: Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Bob Wilber, Art Farmer, Harry Allen and Ken Peplowski. Richard was also a member of the Ray Gelato Giants for ten years, touring extensively both in this country and abroad. With this band, Richard played at Paul McCartney’s wedding, at Bryan Adams’ private at-home party, and for Prince Charles’ birthday at The Ritz in front of the Queen and other members of the royal family.

As well as being a fantastic jazz pianist, Richard is also a sensitive cocktail pianist, the difference being that whereas a jazz player will build his own improvisations on a song, a cocktail pianist will merely embellish the tune, keeping it recognizable and familiar. Between 2002 and 2009 Richard's cocktail piano skills were heard regularly at London's exclusive Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner. Currently, Richard performs regularly at the Boisdale Group of restaurants in London, and since November 2011 performs weekly at restaurateur Richard Caring's new flagship steakhouse '34 Grosvenor Square' in London's Mayfair.

Richard’s repertoire covers what is known as the Great American Songbook numbers penned by writers such as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Lerner and Loewe, etc which started life in Broadway shows and Hollywood musicals but then went on to become the core repertoire of artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. Where necessary, Richard can provide his own professional quality stage piano and our quote covers playing for up to two hours over a three-hour stay. Although the demo tracks and our quote are for Richard playing solo, he can also add bass and drums if a jazzier set is required. https://www.functionjunction.co.uk/act/richard-busiakiewicz

Vocalist Lillian Boutte chose a line from one of gospel music's best-loved songs for the title of her CD, I Sing Because I'm Happy. It comes from "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," which is among the selections that Boutte sings on the recording. The New Orleans-born singer went back to her roots in the gospel tradition to make this record. Boutte grew up in a Creole neighborhood in which an integral part of the cultural fabric was the church. She was raised singing in a choir. In fact, her friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once likened her voice to the great Mahalia Jackson. Boutte speaks of having a recommitment of faith after a life-threatening illness. She often performs gospel when she returns to the city of her birth from her home in Germany. It is with her German musician husband, Thomas L'Etiene, that she made this record of gospel favorites. The singer is renowned in Europe; the decision to make the record reflects the great interest that Europeans have in the jazz and gospel traditions of New Orleans. The jazz singer lifts her voice in praise on a number of gospel favorites, such as "Precious Lord," "In the Sweet by and By," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." She is exudes joy on "That Old Time Religion" and shows reverence on "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?." The CD shows that while Lillian Boutte may be an international star of jazz, she is still a daughter of the church.~ Rose Of Sharon Witmer https://www.allmusic.com/album/i-sing-because-im-happy-mw0000196190

Pianist, composer, and producer Lawrence Sieberth is at home in virtually any musical setting. While based in jazz, Lawrence’s musical vision is not limited by genre barriers he prefers to integrate the many facets of music and performance into an engaging, inclusive experience. His own neobop improvisations and experimental inclinations combine with his classical and world music infuences providing an extensive musical vocabulary for both performances and compositions for television, film, and stage.

Lawrence Sieberth’s album ‘New New Orleans’ ?nds him literally center stage, a solo piano set wherein traditional New Orleans jazz pieces get a brilliant surveying with some judicious modern overtones sprinkled throughout them. That same year saw the far side of the spectrum via ‘Arkipelago’, an album exploring the area(s) where the ethereal overlaps with the earthy, where fevered fantasy coalesces with funk, the Second Line strolls Alpha Centauri. In the most recent album ‘It’s Magic’ in collaboration with singer Germaine Bazzle, Sieberth’s exemplary skills as accompanist come to the fore songs such as “Bye Bye Blackbird” and “Sophisticated Lady” are not merely covered but made anew, the notes dangling from his ?ngertips as if they were dipped in honey. ‘Silhouettes’, featuring his quartet, explores the acoustic side of contemporary jazz and his recent explorations into ?ery afrocuban and funk rhythms are exempli?ed on his recording ‘Estrella Banda’, both albums featuring his own compositions and pianistic technical prowess. His recently release ‘An Evening in Paris’ was recorded in Paris and is garnering very favorable reviews on the international scene.

His local ensembles vary from New Orleans traditional to questing improvisations, from the avantgarde to mainstream jazz and R&B. He has performed at virtually every venue in New Orleans, from small clubs to the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival where he has been a regular featured artist and musical director of over 30 years. His collaborations with notable local performers include: Johnny Adams, Charles Neville, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Tony Dagradi, John Vidacovich, Luther Kent, Brian ‘Breeze’ Cayolle, Victor Goines, and Jason Marsalis. He presently performs and tours with Gerald French & the Original Tuxedo Jazzband and vocalist Germaine Bazzle.

As solo pianist, Lawrence was a mainstay at Mr. B’s restaurant for 12 years as well as playing for diners at the Windsor Court Hotel, ‘The Sazerac Lounge’ at the ‘Fairmont Hotel’ and ’Ralph’s On the Park’. The local venues where he performed regularly with groups included ‘The Palace Cafe’, ‘The Monteleone Hotel’ and the ‘Royal Sonesta Hotel’ to name a few. Beginning as the solo pianist for Gino’s Restaurant, the music evolved into the most successful jazz venue in Baton Rouge history, bringing in major New Orleans’ talent where jazz quartets performed several times a week. Performers included Luther Kent, Eliane Elias, Gene Bertoncini and Red Tyler just to name a very few. The 1991 CD release of ‘I Migliori: Live at Gino’s’ was a major success of this tenure which lasted for over 18 years.

Lawrence Sieberth has been a commissioner on the Louisiana Music Commission and was honored by New Orleans Magazine (1998) as outstanding contemporary jazz pianist. His CD Heartstrings was chosen by Jazziz (1995) in their ‘Keyboards on Fire’ special issue. Lawrence has received numerous grants including the Louisiana Artist Fellowship Award and the 2009 Asante Award and is a recent recipient of the Community Partnership Grant sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. http://lawrencesieberth.com/about/

Oscar Rossignoli folds many traditions into his music. The Honduran-born pianist began training in classical music when he was 6. In high school at a conservatory in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, he discovered Latin jazz through Dominican pianist Michel Camilo. On a music scholarship at Louisiana State University, he continued his classical studies but began playing with some of New Orleans' best jazz musicians. Rossignoli's improvisation incorporates his classical training, the Latin stylings of his youth and the North American jazz he's come to know as a musician in New Orleans. Rather than playing traditional chords with his left hand and improvising melodies with his right, he uses the full instrument and creates rich textures. Among Rossignoli's regular local shows are Sunday gigs with Pat Casey's band at The Spotted Cat. His quartet, including trumpeter Steve Lands, drummer Peter Varnado and bassist Alex Warshawsky, performs regularly at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro.

Oscar Rossignoli announces the release of; INERTIA, a collection of original compositions and improvisations from the Honduran born, New Orleans based pianist. This is Rossignoli's first recording as leader, and is also his first solo piano project, showcasing his long relationship with the instrument, as well as his process of discovery through improvisation. INERTIA will be available on May 25th, but you can pre-order the album and listen to "Vámonos", and "Nocturno" here. You can also watch a live performance of "Vámonos!" here. http://www.crossovermedia.net/artists/oscar-rossignoli/projects/inertia/

A self taught musician,Peidro began playing tenor at the age of fourteen.A couple of years later he was playing on several blues and rhythm and blues bands. His interest in Jazz developed quickly and since then,Peidro has remained loyal to his musical heros: the big-toned tenors in Jazz, like Ben Webster,Don Byas or Gene Ammons and specially the Texas tenor school of Jacquet,Cobb,Tate,Johnson..etc

Although his sound and phrasing are deeply rooted in the swing-era,his approach is so natural and genuine that he has achieved popularity as a real “keeper of the flame” among the classic jazz lovers all over Spain. Often reviewed as an “outsider”,a “rara avis” or “an stylist swinmming agains the current” by jazz critics who appreciate his honest, unpretentious approach and invariably point out the richness of his tenor sound. https://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/enricpeidro

BEDlam is another in the series of recordings by the unusual, fun, swinging quartet known as BED. The group’s name is the humorous acronym formed by the names of three of the band members: Becky, Eddie, and Dan. However, bassist Joel Forbes’s contributions are essential to the band’s remarkable sound. As always, Joel is heard playing acoustically here, and his rich, deep bass is much of the reason for the band’s warm, glowing sound.

This is another great collection of interesting and often-overlooked songs from the Golden Era of American songwriting. The voice of Rebecca Kilgore is sublime, and her cool phrasing has made her in demand all over the world. Like the warm-toned trombonist Dan Barrett, Rebecca has performed at Carnegie Hall and at jazz parties and major jazz festivals all over the world. Listen as she reimagines Peggy Lee’s up- tempo hit, It’s A Good Day as a finger-popping, Gospel-infused ode to joy. Dan Barrett uses his special vintage mute for a suitably-bluesy contribution to Blue Moon.

You’ll give Eddie Erickson a standing ovation (as many audiences have done all over the world) when you hear his fantastic guitar playing and his singing. Eddie is also Rebecca’s own favorite vocalist! Eddie’s beautiful baritone voice is heard in several vocals here, and in duets with Rebecca. Eddie was recently inducted into the American Banjo Hall Of Fame. His swinging plectrum banjo playing can be heard in several selections in this variety-packed album. Another highlight in this set is Eddie’s solo banjo rendition of selections from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma! The title track, Bedlam, is of course a riff on the quartet’s name, but it is also a hip, boppish blues melody by the hip, boppish tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray. BED’s longtime friend and resident genius Ray Landsberg contributed the hip, boppish lyrics that Rebecca debuts here. https://danbarrett.bandcamp.com/album/bedlam

That not being the case, rest assured that Back to the Garden presents those iconic Pop selections so incredibly re- imagined that what we experience could easily be considered "new selections." Judy Wexler petite in stature, but tremendously talented and agile in artistry and her cadre of LA's best, delivers her finest performance and certainly most ambitious album to date. And, given her track record, via five celebrated albums, Back to the Garden borrowing a 60's adjective is very "heavy."

Though young when most of these tracks hit the airwaves in chaotic times, Wexler dives fully into the familiar melodic and message content. Jeff Colella & Josh Nelson's unique arrangements and the ensemble's performances brilliantly deliver stunningly new perspectives. "Get Together," originally a more Folk-like side, kicks things off slickly and texturally, and portends different things to come. Joni Mitchell's manifesto about urban development, "Big Yellow Taxi" is the funk-quirky killer champion on this album. "Something's Happening Here" has Wexler, Colella, and team going towards deeper, darker-blue imagery than the original. "Everybody's Talkin' " from "Midnight Cowboy," (United Artists, 1969) is taken slower than normal and has Wexler talking beautifully, followed by a slick Hendrik Meurkens' solo (a nod to Toots Thielemans who performed on the soundtrack).

Wexler's awesome vocal talent, dexterity, and expressive flair lavishly wash across the session. While this was Pop fare in the day, hers is not a Pop voice. Rather, she's a hip vocalist whose tune engagement is paramount. That's quite apparent on "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (with a fine Jay Jennings trumpet solo). It would be so easy for a singer to "re-sing" this material. Wexler doesn't. She and the crew have re- ignited it, lending new reflections on Pop gospels. Back to the Garden is quite a recording. It is an accomplishment and truly an aural "Garden of Earthly Delights."~ Nicholas F.Mondello https://www.allaboutjazz.com/back-to-the-garden-judy-wexler-jewel-city-jazz

Richard Smith was born in Detroit and raised in Eugene, Oregon. It was a Chick Corea concert at the age of 14 that initially fueled his passion for music. "I was so blown away by that concert that I rode my bike home, picked up the phone to promptly break up with my girlfriend, and tried to stay up all night practicing. Come to think of it, I have been working pretty hard at music ever since." At age 23, Smith received a teaching fellowship to U.S.C., in Los Angeles. This event changed his life and his music forever. Luminaries such as Lee Ritenour, Paul Jackson Junior, Larry Koonse, Christopher Parkening and the entire L.A. Guitar Quartet had attended USC, and Richard considered it an honor to have received such an award. Richard's first break came when guitar legend and U.S.C. instructor, Joe Diorio recommended him for a gig with contemporary jazz pianist Billy Mitchell. Mitchell introduced Smith to R&B/Jazz, a style that has become an indelible part of Richard’s sound. “I fell in love with all of the beats that were kicking around and when compared to the music in Eugene, it was such an amazing tapestry of sounds that I wanted to jump into everything head-first”. After leaving Mitchell's band, Smith began playing with the many L.A. based groups of the day – Siegel, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Guitars and Saxes, and Max Bennett among others. Smith joined Richard Elliot’s group and remained for 10 years, recording 6 number one albums for the Blue Note label. At the same time, Richard was rising in the ranks of the professorate at U.S.C., achieving the level of professor and department chair in the Studio/Jazz Guitar department all before the age of 30. "I spent the '90s running the program at U.S.C., touring the world 100 days a year, playing sessions and making records on my own. I loved it all and couldn’t say 'no' to any of it." Richard's first disc "Inglewood" was made with money from a U.S.C. student award and featured friends Kenny G and Dan Siegel. Ultimately "Ingelwood" was nominated for "album of the year" in Japan. Since then, every one of his 10 solo discs has reached the top of the music charts and have garnered awards such as 'Best New Artist' (Radio and Records Magazine) and best album of the year (Tune Up Magazine).

Richard Smith's Thirteen solo recordings have established him as a veteran of the contemporary music world - with critical success on every one of his releases. His albums have received accolations such as “Best Contemporary Jazz Guitar Album” (Tune Up Magazine), nomination for “Record of the Year” (Ad Lib Magazine), and “Best New Artist” (Radio & Records Magazine). His album 'SOuLIDIFIED' spent 17 weeks in the top 10 for radio airplay of American contemporary jazz radio (Radio and Records Magazine) and 3 weeks at number 1 in the World for satellite and cable airplay (Music Choice). His recent recording, “Tangos” - 2014, made the top 10 indie and contemporary jazz charts for over 5 months. “One World, Two Guitars” is an exciting duo project with the virtuoso Sicilian guitarist, Francesco Buzzurro. The duo tours regularly in America and Europe. His 2010 release ‘L.A. CHILLHARMONIC’ features Alex Acuna, Brian Bromberg, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Lorber, Eric Marienthal, Michael Paulo, Greg Adams, and the Tower of Power horn section. The touring ensemble won a nomination for Best International Group of the year from the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. In 2012 touring and teaching took him to England, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Italy, Australia and Tahiti. Richard is also full professor and former Chair of the Studio/Jazz Guitar department at the renowned Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He holds a dual appointment, and is also a member of the new Popular Music Performance Studies department - the first of its kind at the conservatory level. Richard developed a groundbreaking course entitled “Contemporary Music, a Global Perspective’, where USC students travel to London and collaborate with an international student roster at The Institute of Popular Music Performance (ICMP). Richard also developed the first DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts), Contemporary Guitar, program in the World at USC. Graduates of this program hold distinguished positions as professors, deans and department chairs, all over the World.

Richard's students are working professionally from Broadway and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, recording and touring with such luminaries as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Dan Siegel, Marc Anthony, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Elton John, Madonna, Michael Bolton, Bono, Maroon 5, Jenifer Lopez, John Mayer and performing on current hit television programs such as American Idol and Glee. In EUROPE Richard has performed master classes at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, London, The Academy of Contemporary Music, Guildford, The Leeds College of Music, The London College of Contemporary Music, the Academy of Popular Culture, Leeuwarden, Holland, The Rotterdam Conservatorium, The Utrecht Conservatorium, The Royal Academy of Music, Denmark, Music Academy 2000, Bologna, The Universtate d'Rome, Ionian University, Greece, The ESC Guitar Seminar, Siracusa and many more. In 2012 he spent a semester as visiting professor at Agder University, Norway. A powerfully rhythmic, delightfully hypnotic representation of the resiliency of the Crescent City, John Boutte's Treme (perhaps the creative centerpiece of this diverse gumbo of a collection) is the perfect theme song for the popular HBO series about N'awlins people living in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. But the classic stomping vibe of that piece and a handful of others (including the opening romp "Two Bands Rolling") is just part of the diverse magical vibe created by a true native son who sounds a tad like Rod Stewart and whose two-decade career is infused with everything from jazz and gospel to R&B, blues, and Latin music. He uses his raspy soul voice to channel Sam Cooke on a restrained but emotionally searing version of "A Change Is Gonna Come," and finds a clever way to merge gospel with danceable upright bass-driven jazz swing on "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Other tunes, like the midtempo ballad "Shake My Gate," are pure blues-soul-pop that could have come from any region. A good example of how he blends his N'awlins soul and his gospel musical roots is "At the Foot of Canal Street," which paints its hometown imagery with a lighthearted, skipping gospel groove. The overall effect is like church-hopping through the gritty neighborhoods of New Orleans (he hails from the 7th Ward), looking beyond any sorrow and devastation to the call of a higher power that tells Boutte, yes, you and your fellow natives can overcome. ~Jonathan Widran https://www.allmusic.com/album/jambalaya-mw0002293629

In this earnest salute to the King of Swing, clarinetist Terry Myers and his splendid Florida based orchestra frame impressive likenesses of songs that helped make Benny Goodman a household name when big bands ruled the musical world. While there’s nothing here that one hasn’t heard before, there’s also nothing that’s not worth hearing again (that’s what made the Swing Era so special), and Myers and Co. stroll resolutely and unapologetically down “the sunny side of the street.” It’s clear they had a lot of fun recording the album, as a result of which the listener does too. Myers isn’t Goodman, and that’s fine, as he’s an accomplished clarinetist in his own right who makes his point without impersonating Benny. As for the sidemen, Myers deserves another gold star for recruiting, as they are first class in every way. The orchestra packs a formidable punch, glides through the Goodman style charts without breaking a sweat, and does so with warmth and a buoyant demeanor that’s contagious. Solos are for the most part brief but rewarding, and the rhythm section never stumbles or loses sight of its mandate, which is to keep the orchestra swinging from downbeat to coda.

Drummer Eddie Metz is a marvelous Gene Krupa surrogate on “Sing, Sing, Sing,” parts 1 and 2, with Myers, trumpeter Charlie Bertini and tenor Don Mitiken also heard on Part 2. Trombonist John Allred, one of the orchestra’s better known sidemen, is showcased on the lovely finale, Gordon Jenkins’ “Goodbye,” which Goodman used as his closing theme, and solos as well on “Bugle Call Rag” (with Mitiken and trumpeter Steve Walters), Ray Noble’s “The Very Thought of You” (with trombonist Dave Edwards) and “Poor Butterfly.” Edwards is spotlighted on the fast moving “Swingtime in the Rockies.” Connie Brink, a competent but otherwise unremarkable vocalist, is featured on “Moonglow,” “And the Angels Sing” and “Almost Like Being in Love.” In a brief liner note, Myers writes that the album is not only a testimonial to the music of Benny Goodman, but also “a tribute to the wonderful generation [that] made the music popular in the first place. The sacrifices they made for all of us in defeating the Depression and the axis powers in World War II made it possible for us to thrive in the last half of the twentieth century. To all of them, we say thanks." Wonderful sentiments indeed, and our hat is off to Myers and his orchestra for honoring those whose selfless endeavors helped pave the way for the peace and prosperity we savor and too often take for granted today.~ Jack Bowers https://www.allaboutjazz.com/a-tribute-to-benny-goodman-terry-myers-tmo-review-by-jack-bowers.php

Francesco Buzzurro's lifelong privileged connection with guitar started at the tender age of six when his father gave him his first guitar, which will then lead him to study classical guitar. After earning his Diploma at "Conservatorio Bellini" in Palermo, he continues education with courses held by Aldo Minella and Oscar Ghiglia. He perfected himself at the "Arts Academy" in Rome under the guidance of Stefano Palamidessi and some big concert performers like David Russell, Alberto Ponce, Hopkinson Smith and John Duarte. After taking his Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures, he started an intense concert activity that brought him to travel all over the world: from America, to Greece, to Germany, to Spain and Turkey. As a classical guitarist he won three national concerts: the "Citta di Alassio", the "Benedetto Albanese" in Caccamo, Sicily, and the "Savona in Musica". On top of his studies of classical music and of his passion for folk music, he soon develops an interest in jazz music, which bring him to graduate in Jazz Music with Honorable Mention. https://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=11040067&style=music

One of the coolest, grooviest settings for the Hammond of Mike LeDonne that we've heard in years a set that mostly features him working with a larger ensemble, at a level that brings back some of the great 60s sessions from Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson! Yet given Mike's touch on the keys, and the more contemporary mode of the groove, there's a nicely different vibe here not just retro jazz organ with big band, but a new chapter in the book balanced here with work from LeDonne's Groover Quartet which features work from Eric Alexander on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Joe Farnsworth on drums. All three of those players are also in the larger group and if you're keeping track, the set features five big band numbers, and three quartet tunes. Titles include "Matador", "It's All Your Fault", "Bags & Brown", "Blues For Jed", "Rock With You", and "Party Time". © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/983958/Mike-LeDonne:It%27s-All-Your-Fault

(10:26) 2. Sandu
( 5:13) 3. I Got Rhythm
( 9:55) 4. Body & Soul
( 9:29) 5. Joy Spring

Recorded live at Baltimore’s Famous Ballroom in May of 1971, this set captures the redoubtable tenor man with a well-oiled ensemble trumpeter Danny Moore, pianist Albert Dailey, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Harold White playing with such unerring synchronicity that a listener might be excused for assuming that most of the arrangements had been laid out beforehand. Not so, according to Coleman’s testimonial in the liner notes: “[W]e didn’t do much written stuff … it was going to sound like an arrangement, which it was, but it wasn’t written … we just went in and played.”

Coleman and Moore set the tone from the start with their intro to John Lewis’ “Afternoon in Paris,” interweaving in dual improvisation before melding into a unison statement of the theme, which then segues into Coleman’s solo: bright with good humor, dancing gaily through the tune’s harmonic architecture, probing with quick-minded precision yet never sounding academic or dry. Moore expands on the freewheeling mood, interspersing a few smears to add a tinge of hipster irony. Dailey then invokes a more pastoral feel before breaking into a jubilantly swinging main passage, as Ridley and White lay down a tight rhythmic framework.

The ensemble brings similar freshness to such standards as Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring” (featuring a duo workout between Coleman and White) and “Sandu” (on which Moore, rather than attempt to emulate Brown’s technical legerdemain, structures his solo in a circular fashion, returning to a stated theme and exploring fresh harmonic implications with each iteration). Especially notable is “I Got Rhythm,” reimagined as a high-octane, boppified workout. Coleman plunges through the changes with daunting dexterity, nodding only obliquely to the original theme; Dailey leaps into the fun, skittering with joyful abandon; and White contributes a wide-spectrum solo, as melodic as it is percussive. Overall, it’s the set’s most jaw-dropping technical display yet, as throughout, relaxed, unforced, and devoid of pretension or self-indulgence.~ By David Whiteis https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/the-george-coleman-quintet-in-baltimore-reel-to-real/
