Pianist George Shearing's long association with Capitol Records (1955-1969) saw the release of several smooth Latin albums spotlighting his patented block-chord keyboard style mixed with tasteful Cuban and Brazilian percussion. A trailblazer in the Latin-jazz style (his mid-'50s combos featuring Willie Bobo and Armando Peraza would inspire a young Cal Tjader), Shearing appealed to jazz and easy listening fans alike.

On the heels of wildly popular and PR department-treated mambo ventures like Latin Escapade and Latin Lace, Shearing took on the bossa nova craze of the early '60s with this long player. Featuring the unobtrusive yet engaging arrangements of fellow Latin music champion Clare Fischer, Bossa Nova includes usual suspects like "One Note Samba," "Desfinado," and "Manha de Carnaval," along with appropriately dressed-up versions of "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Come Rain or Shine." And though listeners looking for more substantial genre statements are advised to turn to Stan Getz's bossa blockbusters or Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto's early records, Shearing fans certainly will find a lot here to enjoy. Highlights include the Fischer originals "Samba da Borboleta" and "Pensativa." ~  Stephen Cook  http://www.allmusic.com/album/shearing-bossa-nova-mw0000905517
