Bass – George Mraz; Drums – Lewis Nash; Guitar – Kenny Burrell; Piano – Tommy Flanagan. Recorded April 29 and 30, 1990, at Studio 44, Monster, Holland.

Veteran pianist Tommy Flanagan, in a quartet with guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, performs blues, ballads and some obscurities during one of his most rewarding recordings. Flanagan has never recorded an indifferent album, but this set seems more inspired than most, making it a perfect introduction to this tasteful, swinging and creative (within the bop mainstream) pianist. ~Scott Yanow

  1. Gorgeous when he soloes. TF, I mean. (In a group like this, it's usally the drummer I'd take out first. But, in this instance, it's Kenny Burrell on the guitar I'd take out first, then Lewis Nash on drums. George Mraz on bass -- that's nice.) Bradley Cunningham of long shuttered but still deeply lamented Bradley's, on University Place, Greenwich Village, New York City, used to say that he didn't like pianists who pounded on the instrument. Of course, Bradley's was a small room. Pounding didn't suit. But, then again, there's a reason BC ran a small room. BC liked a subtle insinuating piano and, of that, Tommy Flanagan was one of the great masters.
