Ella Fitzgerald - The Complete Decca Singles Vol. 1 (1935-1939) 4-Disc Set

"The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted and she even made a downbeat song such as "Love for Sale" sound joyous. However, when one evaluates her career on a whole, there is simply no one else in her class.

  1. Just in case anyone's interested. I hope Mat this doesn't
seem an intrusion on your posts --not at all!

Ella’s 300 single sides that she recorded for Decca from
1935-1955, will be made available digitally in the form they
    were released (A side/B side).
With more than half the tracks making their digital debut, the
mammoth collection will be divided into four volumes:

-Vol. 1, 1935-1939 includes songs teenaged Ella recorded as
the featured singer fronting the world-renowned Chick Webb
    Orchestra

    while
-Vol. 2, 1939-1941 features 50 tracks credited to Ella and
Her Famous Orchestra, following Webb’s untimely death at age 30.

-Vol. 3 1942-1949 covers the 1940s, when Fitzgerald formally
    became a Decca solo artist

-and Vol. 4 1950-1955 chronicles the first half of the 1950s
before Fitzgerald’s manager Norman Granz created Verve Records
    and brought her on board.

(many thanks to the original reviewer)

  2. Giullia has received well-deserved accolades for posting the newly released lost Coltrane. But Mat also deserves accolades for posting this amazing treasure chest of early Ella. I think we have all or mostly all of the Ella songbooks here in the house as well as various Ella & Louis items and other miscellaneous items. But this is a whole new experience of which we've heard bits previously here and there -- but never in this completeness . . . so, once again, you guys have our deep indebtedness.
