Evangeline was a 1981 album by Emmylou Harris that was composed mostly of leftover material from past recording sessions and which did not fit into any of her other albums. Songs included a remake of "Mister Sandman" (from the ill-fated Trio sessions with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt), "Evangeline", which she had previously performed with The Band, Rodney Crowell's "Ashes By Now", and a cover of John Fogerty's "Bad Moon Rising".

Though it received mixed reviews upon its release, the album was yet another commercial success for Harris. It was certified Gold in less than a year after its release. A single release of "Mister Sandman" (Top 10 country/Top 40 pop) did well on the charts, though neither Ronstadt's nor Parton's record companies would allow their artists' vocals to be used on the single, so Harris rerecorded the song, singing all three parts for the single release. After creating a huge number of bossa nova albums featuring music from other world music genres, Japanese singer Lisa Ono returned to her musical roots with an album dedicated specifically to Brazilian bossa nova master Antonio Carlos Jobim. To celebrate (posthumously) the composer's 80th birthday, Ono recorded a wide collection of Jobim's greatest pieces. "The Girl from Ipanema," "One Note Samba," and "Agua de Beber" are all present, though "Corcovado" is surprisingly absent, despite it being a favorite performance for Ono.

With the Eagles having officially disbanded in May 1982, leaving behind eight Top 40 hits that followed the release of the spectacularly successful Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, Asylum Records naturally compiled a second hits collection for fall 1982 release. Seven of those hits were included (the exception being the seasonal "Please Come Home for Christmas"), along with three LP tracks, one each from One of These Nights, Hotel California, and The Long Run. Disdained by longtime fans and by the Eagles themselves, the collection was perfect for listeners who knew the band through number one radio hits like "New Kid in Town," "Hotel California," and "Heartache Tonight." It also spared them having to buy mediocre albums like The Long Run and Eagles Live just to have copies of the best-known songs from those releases. As the offspring of 1960s California pop royalty (Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Mamas & Papas' John and Michelle Phillips), female vocal trio Wilson Phillips seems uniquely qualified to turn out a comeback album (after 12 years of silence) featuring covers of L.A. -centric hits from the '60s and '70s. Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" is ripe for revival, and here it gets a bit of a pumped-up Britney Spears-style treatment. Neil Young's "Old Man" is also the recipient of techno-friendly modernization. The trio's take on the Eagles' "Already Gone" sounds like a natural fit for contemporary-country radio. Unsurprisingly, the most faithful renditions are the strongest--Joni Mitchell's title cut and the Youngbloods' pacific anthem "Get Together." The girls dig into the catalogs of their parents too, for a "Monday, Monday" that owes more to Sheryl Crow than to the Mamas & the Papas, and a zesty romp through the Beach Boys' "Dance, Dance, Dance." The most affecting moment on CALIFORNIA, though, is the closing track, where Brian Wilson joins his daughters and their pal for a piano-and-vocal version of his classic "In My Room."

Jazz for a Mellow Morning, as released by Savoy Jazz in 2003, is a continuation of the popular Jazz For series released by 32 Jazz in the late '90s. Those discs contained songs from the catalog of the Muse label from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, and so does this disc. The 17 tracks are spread over two discs, and jazz giants like Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, and Ron Carter all contribute tracks and brush shoulders with jazz middleweights like Mulgrew Miller, Larry Coryell, and Buster Williams. As the title suggests, the songs are relaxed and the mood is swinging in a polite and sophisticated way. Although the songs date from well beyond jazz's peak years, the performances are uniformly solid and the disc is a nice low-priced collection of mellow jazz perfect for relaxing a morning away. ~ Tim Sendra

Stefanie Schlesinger received her first piano lessons at age 9 and started studying classical singing at age 12. In 2002 she took her finals at the Music Academy Augsburg/Nuremberg as a "diploma singer" after also getting lessons in acting, playing the piano and elocution. Stefanie not only appeared in musical and opera productions but also premiered solo works of contemporary classical music. Further experiences include classical choir singing, gospel workshops with Ronnell Bey and jazz ensemble singing with Holli Ross. For quite a while now, 25-year-old Schlesinger has been feeling at home as a jazz vocalist. Thanks to her technical skills and unusual sensibility for melodies and lyrics, she offers a special magic of her own. Again and again, her fragile and melancholy art of ballad singing has been moving audiences to tears.

Because of her thoroughly trained voice and her love for subtle details Stefanie is able to master even difficult and rare songs con bravura and create emotional images of beauty full of warm and tender colors. For her international debut CD "What Love Is" Stefanie Schlesinger chose a mixture of exquisite standard songs and Brazilian moods. She comes up with her own lyrics for Carla Bley's "Sing Me Softly Of The Blues" and also shows her "classical side" on "Laudate" accompanied by the vibraphone and a string quartet. The musicians involved are select individual players who - in changing line-ups - react with empathy to this young singer's distinctive nuances. The outstanding American-European rhythm trio of Bob Degen, Isla Eckinger and Jarrod Cagwin has already proven its worth on the last recordings by Dusko Goykovich ("In My Dreams", ENJ-9408 2) and Charlie Mariano ("Deep In A Dream", ENJ-9423 2). The full band is completed by Brazilian guitar player Pedro Tagliani and - of course - the sophisticated vibes and marimba player Wolfgang Lackerschmid who also brought in some of his very refined and emotional compositions like "Why Shouldn't You Cry", "I Wish", "Baiao Kathrin", "Watch You Sleepin'" and "Laudate".

On this 1957 date, Webster is teamed up with the great Oscar Peterson Quartet. Supporting Webster on each track, this music lays "in the pocket" (as musicians would say) quite well. Much of this is due to drummer Stan Levey's buoyant swing. Webster himself is heard on two simple blues numbers of his own penning including the title track and "Late Date." Other songs include the standards "Lover Come Back To Me," "Where Are You," and "Makin' Whoopee." Perhaps the most riveting tune on SOULVILLE, however, is the beautiful ballad "Time on My Hands." Indeed, Webster is one of the most brilliant instrumental balladeers jazz has ever produced. No one can get that airy (even sultry) tone quite like Webster. Finally, as an intriguing bonus, we hear Webster perform three tunes in duet with Levey. Intriguingly, Webster plays piano on these tracks! Using an antiquated stride/boogie woogie style, Webster shows that his talent reaches beyond the saxophone.

The San Francisco Chronicle hails eighteen year old Judy Butterfield as a young entertainer "on her way toward the rainbow" reminiscent of "a mix of Elizabeth Taylor and Scarlett O'Hara." A protégé of "Queen of Cabaret" Andrea Marcovicci, she made her New York debut at the age of fourteen at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention. Her signature show Judy Sings Judy: Songs of a Young Garland is directed by acclaimed Cabaret Director Clifford Bell and premiered at the famed Empire Plush Room in April 2005. Judy's first CD, Judy Sings Judy: Live at the Empire Plush Room was released by Fynsworth Alley (www.fynsworthalley.com) in September of 2005.

She has performed at the famous Cinegrill at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, at The Gardenia, in San Francisco's tribute to Stephen Sondheim and with the Hillfest Orchestra in Peabody Massachusetts. Judy will be a freshman at Barnard College in New York this fall. She has appeared in The American Conservatory Theater's production of Shed a Little Light: The Music of James Taylor, and in A.C.T.'s A Christmas Carol. She was nominated for a 2006 MAC Award for New York Female Debut Performance, and received the Julie Wilson Award at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention Opening Night Gala in New York City

"New York Stories" was originally an instrumental by Jeanfrancois Prins. He asked me to write a lyric about the Big Apple, where we met. When the Spanish "Jazz Terrassa Big Band" proposed recording a CD with me, I suggested working with Peter Herbolzheimer, with whom I often perform in Germany. In this song, we celebrate the excitement arriving in New York City, which for jazz musicians is the musical center of the world.

What a glorious sound Debbie makes on this album. “The Rest of Your Life” is a collection of timeless jazz classics souped up by Mrs. Cunningham and her talented friends. What I love about this album is her vocal fearlessness. She’s not afraid to open her mouth and place the notes exactly where she wants them. There are a hundreds of “My Funny Valentine” renditions floating around and her sassy version is rather refreshing. Kudos to John Swana, on trumpet. 

The playfullness of the lyrics is echoed in her sensuous, playful delivery. You can tell she had fun with it. Each of the 11 tracks on this album are an absolute elegant treat. “The Way He Makes Me Feel” made me picture myself in a sepia toned reality where everything is sophisticated. This is a very professional, romantical and sophisticated effort. Debbie’s voice has a firm command of human emotion. Anyone that knows me knows that I take my Stevie Wonder very very seriously. I couldn’t wait to get to “Overjoyed” just to see if she might have messed my boy’s classic up. NOPE. She nailed it. Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki started her musical training at age four with the piano, followed by the flute, soon after. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15.

After graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she began to play with Australian musicians such as Mike Nock, Dale Barlow, Paul Grabowsky, Bernie McGann, and Ten Part Invention. She also toured Australia with Russian musicians Daniel Kramer and Alexander Fischer and American trumpeters Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley. She continued her studies with various bassists including visiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton.

Nicki was the recipient of two awards, a scholarship to Pan Pacific Music Camps at the age of 16, and first place in the 1992 Jazz Action Society’s Annual Song Competition for her composition “Come and Get It”, which is the opening track of Nicki and her sister Lisa’s debut CD, “Awabakal Suite”. She was also nominated for the annual Australian Young Achievers Award by the Arts Council of Australia who granted her the funds to come to New York to study with Rufus Reid. Nicki came to New York in May 1994. In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel. Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, Joe Wilder, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Marlena Shaw, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Bill Mays, Scott Hamilton, Lillian Boutte, Larry Carlton and Houston Person, to name a few.

Jimmy McGriff's Milestone debut, which has been reissued on CD, features the soulful organist heading a group of lesser-known players -- including three horns and the fine guitarist Melvin Sparks -- and doing his best to emulate the sound of a big band. The material ("I'm Walkin'," a couple of Frank Foster numbers including "Shiny Stockings," Benny Green's "Blow Your Horn," "Since I Fell for You" and a McGriff original) is strong and inspires the musicians to play funky, grease-filled solos. Freddy Cole's second Telarc release features him in a variety of jazz and Latin settings, with a stellar cast of musicians -- most notably pianist/arranger Arturo O'Farrill. Cole plays very capable piano on five of the 11 tracks and arranges six of them. Gravel-voiced and relentlessly laid-back, the younger brother of Nat "King" Cole is true to form on this romantic collection of songs, most of which aren't too well known, with the exception of "Invitation" and "I Concentrate on You." The nicest surprise comes on Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Sem Voce," which Cole sings in the original Portuguese; Joe Beck plays the changes on alto guitar and solos beautifully on acoustic. Cole's regular band, with guitarist Jerry Byrd, bassist Herman Burney, and drummer Curtis Boyd, splits the program with a larger Latin ensemble that includes the likes of O'Farrill, "Papo" Vazquez on trombone, Lou Marini on sax and flute, and Steve Berrios on drums and Latin percussion. Even though Cole's voice is not "pretty" in a conventional sense, this definitely works as turn-the-lights-down-low music. O'Farrill's choice of Fender Rhodes electric piano on the first and last tracks is an inspired touch. ~ David R. Adler

As Joey DeFrancesco has switched from the standard Hammond B-3 to the Diversi clone organ, you'd hardly notice how the subtle differences in each instrument affect his playing style. However, this recording reflects a rich, warm feeling manifested not only in his approach, but via the music he is playing--a celebration of songs written by Horace Silver. Tom Harrell (former bandmate of Silver) and Tim Warfield (tenor sax only) were recruited to keep the embers glowing, while longtime DeFrancesco drummer Byron Landham also utilizes the utmost of restraint and taste. This is not the fiery Horace Silver sound stoked by drummer Roy Brooks, but a respectful tribute to Silver's bands, with several well-chosen old favorites and two discernible off the beaten path selections.

DeFrancesco's secondary role in the background is telling on classic tracks like "Strollin'," with its naturally easygoing mood supporting Warfield's deliberate, overly careful phrasings, or the sly, slow groove of "The Jody Grind." The rest of the recording compares well with Silver's original takes, as "Swingin' the Samba" sports a popping beat approaching Mexicali swapping with Brazilian, the shuffle blues "Let's Get to the Nitty Gritty" has no problems or pressure, and "Peace" -- the ultimate ballad -- is lovingly caressed by Harrell's flügelhorn. At over 11 minutes in length, "The African Queen" is as compelling as the original in its up-and-down dynamics. An ever popular piece, "Filthy McNasty" is a fairly simple tune, but done with more fire than the others via great communion between Warfield and Harrell. It's a good recording nonetheless, and one DeFrancesco fans will enjoy.

This 1998 CD has a great deal of timeless music. Guitar features were very rare in jazz prior to Django Reinhardt, and particularly before the guitar became amplified in the late '30s. This essential reissue has all of Eddie Lang's guitar features (leaving out only a few numbers in which he led a bigger group), the two Lang/Carl Kress duets, the Kress/Dick McDonough duets, and all of Kress' unaccompanied solos. The Lang numbers (mostly duets with Arthur Schutt, Frank Signorelli, or Rube Bloom offering quiet support on piano) were unprecedented in jazz at the time. Highlights include "Add a Little Wiggle," "I'll Never Be the Same," and "There'll Be Some Changes Made." Actually, the most memorable moments on this CD are the two Lang/Kress collaborations, classics from 1932 called "Pickin' My Way" and "Feelin' My Way." Lang's single-note lines work perfectly with Kress' advanced chords, and it is surprising that no arranger has transcribed these wonderful performances and orchestrated them for a larger group. Highly recommended, and proof that the jazz guitar did not begin with Charlie Christian. ~Scott Yanow

Performing with frequent collaborators Terell Stafford, Cyrus Chestnut, Tarus Mateen, and (Clarence Penn), Tim Warfield's debut as a leader is a fine mixture of original compositions, standards, and jazz classics. Although all of the nine selections on A Cool Blue are strong, two of the standouts are "Titi Boom I" and "Titi Boom II"; "I" is an uptempo blues, while "II" is slower but just as energetic, with a collective improvisation over a four-note bass vamp. 

Other highlights include a straight-ahead reading of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," a special arrangement of "Night Train," the beautiful title track, and the hard hitting "Mr Jin," introduced by a powerful Penn drum solo.
