In the 1950s and '60s, the Anita Kerr Singers were one of the most popular group of backup vocalists in all of country music, appearing on countless recordings by renowned Nashville artists. Kerr was the group's leader, but was joined by alto Dottie Dillard, tenor Gil Wright, and baritone Louis Nunley, as the quartet initially gained attention by performing on the NBC radio program Sunday Down South in the early '50s, which led to a contract with Decca Records. In 1956, the Anita Kerr Singers landed a spot on the New York-based Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts TV show, which led to further broadcast appearances (although the group never let their session work for others subside). Around the same time, Chet Atkins (then the head of RCA Records' country division) took the group under his wing, which led to the quartet appearing on countless recordings by renowned artists. The Singers continued to record and tour straight through the '60s, even managing to issue several of their own albums, including Anita Kerr Singers Reflect on the Hits of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Velvet Voices and Bold Brass, and Simon & Garfunkel Songbook, among others. ~ Greg Prato

In order to fully appreciate a John Pizzarelli listening experience, the following accoutrements are recommended: candles, rose petals, and a bit of bubbly. Because a night of romance is what's to be expected when one of the contemporary jazzman's discs is playing in your living room or boudoir. Pizzarelli's music is renowned for capturing all of the little nuances of love in confections that are light, breezy, and finger-snapping smooth. The singer/guitarist is one of the early 21st century's more notable jazz interpreters of the younger generation, and he has thus far devoted his career to presenting the classics in his own compositions on his albums. On his second Telarc release, Let There Be Love, Pizzarelli pulls back his arrow again and shoots out a 15-song tribute to romance from its endearingly awkward beginnings to steadying middle to the enduring golden years.

Several numbers on Let There Be Love are Pizzarelli originals. These include "DaVinci's Eyes," "Lucky Charm," and "Our Little Secret." The jazzman also offers up such standards as "These Foolish Things" and "Stompin' at the Savoy." Supported by his family Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar) and Martin Pizzarelli (bass) and showcasing graceful pianist Ray Kennedy, who is the musical driving force behind the songs, Let There Be Love is a beautifully crafted rumination on love, jazz style. The collection is a must for any contemporary jazz lover's collection, especially those who like their tunes light and sweet, and on the gentle side. Simply irresistible. ~ Liana Jonas  http://www.allmusic.com/album/let-there-be-love-mw0000106800

In 1972, a Troy, NY-born, Jersey Shore-raised bass singer named Tim Hauser formed the second and final incarnation of the jazz-swing, all-vocal quartet the world knows today as the Manhattan Transfer (“Boy From New York City,” “Mystery,” “Spice Of Life”). He’s seen fellow members branch off with their own solo CDs through the years. But he never felt a need to do so himself  until his 2007 release in Japan and now, re-released in America. “Love Stories” brings out the now L.A.-based Hauser’s softer, romantic side with 12 known and little-known standards and gems: “The More I See You,” Paul Desmond’s “My Funny Valentine,” “I’m Just A Fool,” and of special note, “She’s Funny That Way,” a 1928 Charles N. Daniels/Richard A. Whiting tune Frank Sinatra put his fine stamp on, done exceptionally well in this updated recording.

Hauser’s girlfriend Barb Sennet Wilson, a graphic artist/music manager, recently put together the artwork for the repackaged CD and especially loves to play a personal favorite, "She's Funny That Way," over and over again, as it truly speaks to her and reminds her of her own love story. And isn't that the point of all love songs? It's easy to find your own love story in any one of these 12 tracks and completely relate.  Known for his fine attention to detail, from the concept and image to the content and promotion, Hauser wisely worked with some pretty famous names (Frankie Valli, Dennis Wilson, Kenny Rankin) in the industry to shape the final, compelling outcome in this, his first solo album. Hopefully not his last. http://www.examiner.com/article/manhattan-transfer-s-tim-hauser-releases-love-stories-for-american-audiences

Cherry-picking highlights from his mid-'50s dates for the Bethlehem label, The Trumpet Artistry of Stu Williamson represents a superb introduction to this underappreciated West Coast jazz great. A remarkably supple, nuanced trumpeter, Williamson captures the absolute essence of the left-coast sound. His solos are expansive yet efficient, speaking volumes in a minimum of phrases. Brother Claude plays piano on all 14 cuts, while Charlie Mariano, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bill Holman rotate guitar duties. All are in top form, crafting soulful renditions of "Yardbird Suite," "Red Cross," and "Darn That Dream." ~ Jason Ankeny  http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-trumpet-artistry-of-stu-williamson-mw0000704063

Hub Songs not only functions as a heartfelt, loving tribute to Freddie Hubbard, one of the greatest trumpeters in bop history, but it's a dynamic, engaging session in its own right. Both Tim Hagans and Marcus Printup had established themselves as two of the finest hard bop trumpeters of the '80s and '90s, and they were well prepared for this session. Working with pianist Benny Green, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, as well as guest musicians Javon Jackson on tenor sax and Vince Herring on alto sax, the duo manages to recapture the driving spirit of Hubbard's best recordings while stamping each song with individual, adventurous solos. It's one of the finest hard bop records of the late '90s. ~ Leo Stanley  http://www.allmusic.com/album/hub-songs-the-music-of-freddie-hubbard-mw0000031683

For many, Anna-Lotta Larsson "Anna" in "Värmlänningarna". The role was also her breakthrough on the big TV audience in 1980, although her ??TV debut actually occurred in 1973 when she was at age 19 performed two songs in Siewert Öholms program "Blue Road". Anna-Lotta has continued to play the role of "Anna" almost every summer when "Värmlänningarna" is set up in Ransäter, which contributed to the strong link to the character.  Anna-Lotta has its roots both in the Värmland and northern soil. She was born in Karlstad, but soon moved with his family to Norrbotten. The move went first to Luleå and at 7 years of age on to Öjebyn, 6 km north of Piteå.

She grew up in a musical home. Mom was singing teacher and father violin teacher at Framnäs Music School. Her musical focus was initially classical. Anna-Lotta's interest for music awoke, for obvious reasons, early. Like many other children, she took piano lessons, but at age 19 she decided to devote himself to music. She trained as a voice teacher at Framnäs Music School and then came in at the Opera Academy in Gothenburg. That meant three years of intense musical and theatrical training, but the move to Gothenburg would also mean the origin of the breakthrough. Opera Academy was near the TV building and Anna-Lotta was invited to sing at Lennart Hyland in "Go'morron Sweden".

It was now the bids started to fall into. The role of "Anna" in the TV production of "Värmlänningarna" she got last year at the Opera Academy. Shortly thereafter came the offer of a big role, as the penguin, in the musical "Animalen" at the Malmö City Theatre (1980-82). Etta Jones - Hollar!

Etta Jones had the spark that made each of her vocals special, though she was never acknowledged properly during a long career. Following her hit "Don't Go to Strangers," she continued to record first-rate songs. Many of her albums were unjustly out of print for decades, though Hollar! was finally reissued by Fantasy as part of their Original Jazz Classics series in 2001. Jones is backed by three separate groups on this release. Guitarist Wally Richardson provides the driving rhythm to back her swinging take of "And the Angels Sing," while vibraphonist Lem Winchester and pianist Richard Wyands support Jones in her emotional rendition of "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)." Jones would eventually return to the brisk bop gem "Reverse the Charges" decades after this recording, but this early version is preferable, with a nice interlude by pianist Jimmy Neely. There's a bit of friendly conversation in the studio as Jones gets underway with another swinger, "Our Love Is Here to Stay," adding a boisterous tenor sax solo by Oliver Nelson. This is easily one of Etta Jones' best recordings. ~Ken Dryden

Benny Carter - New Jazz Sounds: The Urbane Sessions (2 Disc Set)

The remarkable Benny Carter, who had first recorded 25 years earlier, was not even halfway through with his career when he started making sessions for Verve. This double CD wraps up the complete reissuance of all of his Verve albums. The distinctive and lyrical altoist is backed by strings throughout the first disc (16 songs plus ten alternate takes), but there is nothing sleepy about the music. The string arrangements (half by Joe Glover and half by Carter himself) are tasteful and provide a cushion for Carter's melodic but unpredictable horn; this is far from mere mood music. Most of the second disc matches the ageless altoist with trumpeter Roy Eldridge and a rhythm section. Some heat is generated, and most unusual are four unique numbers on which Eldridge duets with drummer Alvin Stoller (one has Roy overdubbing some basic piano), although Roy mostly follows the chord changes. In addition, there is a leftover alternate take from a Carter session with the Oscar Peterson quartet and two exciting selections in a sextet with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and trombonist Bill Harris. Easily recommended, this is a perfectly conceived series. ~Scott Yanow

The singer LYAMBIKO was born in the German state of Thuringia and grew up in a musically active family. Her grandfather was already a member of a jazz combo back in the 1930's, and her father sang in both a church choir and in jazz and world-music bands in his native Tanzania. As a child, LYAMBIKO took lessons on the saxophone and the clarinet and in classical singing, and played the tenor sax in her music school's big band. She was only 17 when she founded her first band as a singer (folk, pop and blues), and was the youngest entrant in a band contest where she won her first studio recording.

After a longer break from making music, LYAMBIKO moved to Berlin in 1999. As part of her preparations for the entrance exam for that city's College of Music she took singing and piano lessons, and rehearsed a small repertoire of jazz standards. Concerts in Berlin jazz clubs followed with different ensembles, and a regular spot in a guitar duo entitled "LYAMBIKO – Strange Fruit". Thanks to a recommendation from the singer Mark Murphy, LYAMBIKO had the chance to appear in the well-known club A-Trane in April 2000.

In April 2001 LYAMBIKO first gave her name to the successful quartet with which she then extended her concert activities to the rest of Germany, and later on to other European countries and to the USA. In 2003 the Boston Globe described LYAMBIKO as "the most promising vocalist jazz has seen in a long, long time". Two acclaimed CD's were released by Nagel/Heyer before the quartet signed with Sony BMG in 2005. These first two albums stayed in the top ten of the jazz charts for several weeks at a time, and after her move to the major label LYAMBIKO released her self-named CD, a "collection of beautiful jazz standards" and then with Love... and then "a sugar-free contemporary reflection on love" (Berliner Zeitung). Each of these two productions was awarded in Germany with the Jazz Award.

In February 2007 Sony BMG released LYAMBIKO's next album, Inner Sense, to which the singer contributed two songs from her own pen for the first time. Apart from two pop/rock covers, the album features solely original compositions, and was positively received by the press as a successful step towards musical independence: "LYAMBIKO exudes more charisma on 'Inner Sense' than ever before" (Jazzthing). In addition to her jazz projects, the singer with Tanzanian roots worked on a program of African music together with a youth choir for the first time in 2007. February 2008 sees the release of her new CD Saffronia (Sony BMG). After five albums, LYAMBIKO now feels ready to bring out a tribute to Nina Simone, who inspired her in 2000 to embark on a career as a jazz singer. After her tribute to Nina Simone, "Saffronia“ (2008), which aroused the first substantial interest in the artist in France as well, Sony Music releases LYAMBIKO’s new album "Something Like Reality" in June 2010. http://www.lyambiko.com/eng/index.php?page=543713372&f=1&i=543713372

The younger brother of pianist Claude Williamson, Stu Williamson was a fixture on West Coast jazz dates of the 1950s. He moved to Los Angeles in 1949 and spent periods playing with Stan Kenton (1951), Woody Herman (1952-1953), and Kenton again (1954-1955), in addition to shorter stints with Billy May and Charlie Barnet. The mellow-toned Williamson, best-known for his association with Shelly Manne (off and on during 1954-1958), was on a countless number of sessions up until 1968 when he dropped out of the music scene. A drug addict, Stu Williamson spent most of his last two decades struggling outside of music. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/artist/stu-williamson-mn0000526195/biography

Henry Mancini ranks right up at the top of a list of composers who wrote for movies and TV. He crafted memorable melodies and framed them with witty and inventive arrangements that in most cases still sound fresh today. Midnight, Moonlight & Magic: The Very Best of Henry Mancini is a 23-song look at the master's work in films and on TV. It spans the years 1958 and 1972 and includes his most popular themes such as the sassy "Pink Panther Theme," the rocking "Peter Gunn," the sweet "Moon River," and the swinging "Baby Elephant Walk." The compilers also found room for some lesser known but still worthy material like the wonderfully bluesy and dreamy "Dreamsville," the rollicking "Pie-in-the-Face Polka" from The Great Race, "Frish Frosh" from High Time, and 1972's "Mystery Movie Theme." Throughout Mancini deftly balances his romantic streak with an ear for the unusual that kept even his sappiest tunes from being too smooth. For example the frenzied piano line on the otherwise treacly "The Sweetheart Tree," the inventive way he combines instruments in "The Inspector Clouseau Theme," or the spooky keyboard sounds on "Theme From 'Cade's County'" are the touches of an inspired craftsman. Other times the melody is just so strong, like on the deathless "Charade," that it doesn't matter how many smooth vocals and swooning strings get piled on top. It still escapes being corny. The collection is very strong, one of the best single-disc Mancini compilations on the market. The only thing holding it back, and giving lie to the title's claim to be the "very best" of his work, is the omission of anything from perhaps his finest soundtrack, 1962's Experiment in Terror. The theme song at least should have been here. Apart from that flaw, this is an entertaining disc that shows just how wonderful Mancini's film compositions truly are. ~Tim Sendra

Libby York - Here With You

Chicago-born Libby York's third album, Here With You, is an expression of her jazz vocal techniques, with more than a little of Chris Connor and June Christy in her delivery. York goes right out on a limb by challenging Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here With You" as an opener, a tune also associated with Chris Connor. It is York's second choice, however, the rarely heard Kaye/Springer song "The Day The World Stopped Turning," that surprises. This song appeared on Johnny Hartman's last Impulse! album, 1965's The Voice That Is, and was the most disposable tune on the album. York's small combo bossa nova version of "The Day The World Stopped Turning" easily trumps Bob Hammer's cornball arrangement for Johnny Hartman in 1965. It's still not a great song, but it does sound so much better.

York puts it all together with the assist of guitarist Howard Alden's arrangements. Guitarist Russell Malone also appears for some delicious duets on Coots/Lewis' "For All We Know," Cahn/Styne's "A Beautiful Friendship" and Douchette/Wolfe's "Azure Te (Paris Blues)," a song with which you just can't go wrong. York provides a rarely heard vocal version of Anderson/Grouyal's "Flamingo," and has some further fine support from cornetist (and vocal partner) Warren Vache.

What are the conclusions that can be reached regarding Libby York's musical career? After graduating from American University in Washington, D.C., she opened a club in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and then lived in Key West, Florida. It wasn't until 1981 that she settled in New York to study with singers Abbey Lincoln and Judy Niemack. Her only two previous albums have been with Chicago based Southport in 1998 and for BluJazz, also a Windy City label, in 2004. Here With You not only her declares her availability, but her full-fledged jazz vocal credentials. ~Michael P. Gladstone

Libby York: vocals; Russell Malone: guitar (3, 6, 8); Howard Alden: guitar; Warren Vache: cornet and vocals (4); Jon Burr: bass; Vanderlei Pereira: drums: percussion (2, 5, 9-11).

Dan Barrett emerged as one of the top young trombonists during the mid-'80s; his ninth date as a leader for Arbors Records finds him leading a quintet through a marvelous collection of swing songs, many of which have been overlooked for a long time or never received widespread attention in the first place. "Melody in Swing" features Barrett's effortless swing and great tone in an easygoing arrangement. He adds a mute for his languid bittersweet solo during the gently swinging "Carelessly," backed by pianist Ray Sherman's rapid runs. "What Is This Thing Called Love?" has a mysterious introduction that adds a touch of campiness, while Barrett's muted horn almost sounds like an old-time crooner on the relaxed arrangement of "There Is No Greater Love," a piece almost always heard at a breakneck tempo by many jazz groups. The capable rhythm section includes guitarist Eddie Erickson, bassist Dave Stone, and drummer Jeff Hamilton ("Canadian" Jeff to Dan & company, to avoid confusion with the Jeff Hamilton who has worked with Ray Brown and also the Clayton Brothers). The delicious "Gravy Waltz," an early-'60s collaboration between the late pianist/singer/comedian Steve Allen and bassist Ray Brown, showcases Erickson on banjo and some fine arco bass by Stone, as well as the leader, in a fun-filled finale to this highly recommended CD. ~Ken Dryden

Joe Williams' debut as the featured vocalist in Count Basie's band was one of those landmark moments that even savvy observers don't fully appreciate when it occurs, then realize years later how momentous an event they witnessed. Williams brought a different presence to the great Basie orchestra than the one Jimmy Rushing provided; he couldn't shout like Rushing, but he was more effective on romantic and sentimental material, while he was almost as spectacular on surging blues, up-tempo wailers, and stomping standards. Basie's band maintained an incredible groove behind Williams, who moved from authoritative statements on "Every Day I Have the Blues" and "Please Send Me Someone to Love" to brisk workouts on "Roll 'Em Pete" and his definitive hit, "All Right, OK, You Win." ~ Ron Wynn http://www.allmusic.com/album/count-basie-swings-joe-williams-sings-mw0000691298

Dave Pike was never an innovator, but his best albums are definitely solid. A perfect example is 1961's It's Time for Dave Pike, which was recorded when the vibist was only 22. By 1961 standards, this album isn't experimental or forward-thinking certainly not compared to some of the adventurous, challenging sounds that were coming from modal and avant-garde improvisers in the early '60s. But it's easy to enjoy if you appreciate swinging, inspired bop along the lines of Milt Jackson, who is one of Pike's primary influences. In fact, this album favors the same vibes/piano/bass/drums format that Jackson embraced during his years with the Modern Jazz Quartet Pike is joined by pianist Barry Harris, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Billy Higgins. But It's Time for Dave Pike doesn't sound like an MJQ date and doesn't contain any third stream experiments; it has more in common with Jackson's work outside the MJQ. Hard bop is the name of the game on this album, which includes a few Pike originals as well as inspired versions of jazz standards like Miles Davis' "Solar," Charlie Parker's "Cheryl," and Tadd Dameron's "Hot House." The only time Pike doesn't lead a quartet on this album is when he tackles Rodgers & Hart's "Little Girl Blue" and performs an unaccompanied vibes solo. Produced by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside, It's Time for Dave Pike was out of print for many years. But that changed in 2001, when Fantasy finally reissued this pleasing album on CD on its Original Jazz Classics imprint. ~ Alex Henderson  http://www.allmusic.com/album/its-time-for-dave-pike-mw0000017025
