Andrew Litton plays transcriptions of improvisations by the much-loved jazz pianist Oscar Peterson; The Bad Plus perform what is termed ‘an arrangement’ of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Litton is a classical conductor who regularly directs Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue from the piano; The Bad Plus are a contemporary piano-bass-drums jazz trio, of the type popularised by Peterson, who have become renowned for their punky, rambunctious remakes of pop songs.

Litton interprets music that was originally improvised while The Bad Plus, improvisers by instinct, interpret a score. And somewhere in the back of Oscar Peterson’s mind as he was improvising on Thelonious Monk’s ‘Round midnight’, Billy Strayhorn’s ‘Take the “A” train’ and Juan Tizol’s ‘Perdido’ was an idea about the original source. Strayhorn’s composition became Duke Ellington’s signature theme tune and Peterson’s recasting was packed with a lifetime’s worth of thoughts and associations, the jittery momentum of his improvisation derived partly from needing to contain so much activity within a three-minute duration – finger-busting Harlem stride piano slamming into windows of impressionistic repose.~Phillip Clark

The Great Jazz Trio was a working cooperative working with various lineups led by Hank Jones in during the 1970s and 1980s, but the revival of this defunct group finds Jones joined by two newcomers to the group, seasoned veterans Richard Davis on bass and the leader's brother, Elvin Jones, on drums. Oddly enough, the two brothers have recorded together very infrequently during their long careers, so this opportunity must have been special to them. The opening track signals a different direction for the group, with Elvin's explosive solo stealing the show in "Autumn Leaves." The pianist's imaginative arrangement of "Yesterdays" begins as a stunning solo before Davis' sparse bass and Elvin's brushes join him. The buoyant treatment of Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" finds Hank in a humorous mood, inserting several brief quotes from well-known works such as "Hot House" and "Blue Skies." The trio is clearly cooking by the time it recorded the percolating take of Oliver Nelson's "Six and Four." Hopefully, this delightful date by the Great Jazz Trio will result in a follow-up recording session. ~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/autumn-leaves-mw0000318396

Pianist Bill O'Connell is not exactly a household name but his CD is quite memorable. The quality of the originals (seven by O'Connell, three from bassist Charles Fambrough and one from soprano saxophonist Howard Alston) is strong, the melodies are often catchy, Grover Washington, Jr., has two good outings on soprano and O'Connell's work on piano and electric keyboards does a very effective job of combining together aspects of both so-called contemporary jazz and hard bop. This is accessible jazz that is also creative.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/signature-featuring-bill-oconnell-mw0000095608

Mark Soskin was born July 12, 1953 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Soskin has recorded and performed with such diverse musicians as Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Randy Brecker, Billy Cobham, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, Cornell Dupree, Herbie Mann, John Abercrombie, Claudio Roditi, Sheila Jordan, Gato Barbieri, Joe Locke, David"Fathead"Newman, Mark Murphy, Slide Hampton, Pete and Sheila Escovedo, Bobby Watson, Miroslav Vitous, The NY Voices and others.   Soskin attended Colorado State University where he pursued classical studies, but at this time his interests in jazz music were growing. In 1973 he enrolled in The Berklee College of Music, studying composition as well as arranging. In Boston he began to work professionally until moving to San Francisco, eventually going on to work with some of the west coast's finest players.   Shortly after arriving in San Francisco, Soskin was introduced to the Latin music legend, Pete Escovedo. Along with Pete's daughter, percussionist Sheila. E, they toured and recorded as Azteca, a group in which Soskin's keyboard, writing, and arranging talents were showcased. Eventually, the group, which now included Tom Harrell on trumpet, went on to record two discs for Fantasy Records, produced by drum ace Billy Cobham. Soskin was enlisted in Cobham's band, a stint that lasted for two years and which produced two recordings for Columbia. Between tours for Cobham, Soskin did a tour and live recording for the CBS All Stars with Tom Scott, Alphonso Johnson, Steve Khan, and Billy Cobham. At this time Soskin was very active as a session player at Fantasy studios in Berkeley, California and veteran jazz music producer Orrin Keepnews took notice.   Soskin signed his first recording contract with Prestige (a subsidiary of Fantasy) produced by Keepnews, entitled "Rhythm Vision." This featured the likes of Benny Maupin and Harvey Mason with the album eventually making it into Billboard's top ten Jazz Chart.

Keepnews introduced Soskin to Sonny Rollins, which started a long, fruitful collaboration (14 years). Besides the extensive touring throughout the world, Soskin can be heard on a number of critically acclaimed recordings with the tenor sax master, including a video,"Saxophone Collosus”.   Since 1981 Soskin has resided in New York City, remaining active as sideman and as a leader. He has ten of his own recordings to date and three as co-leader, one which features Harvie Swartz and Joe LaBarbera with Sheila Jordan called "Spirits", one under the name "Contempo Trio" with Danny Gottlieb and Chip Jackson featuring Ravi Coltrane and another Contempo Trio recording named"The Secret of Life" featuring Carolyn Leonhart. His recording, "17" on TCB, highlights Soskin in a quintet setting featuring mainly original compositions.  He continues to maintain a busy tour schedule as well as giving master classes and workshops. Television performance credits include the HBO hit series, "Sex And The City." Examples of arranging projects have been writing for Slide Hampton's "World Of Trombones" and his writing and playing on Steve Smith's DVD,"Drumset Technique/History of the U.S. Beat". Soskin has been featured in solo piano concerts throughout the world such as the Ottawa Jazz Festival. He has performed the premier of contemporary classical music composer John Adams' opera, "Ceiling/Sky" at Lincoln Center. Soskin is currently on the faculty of The Manhattan School Of Music and has been written up in numerous music publications, including Ira Gitler and Leonard Feather's Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz and The Jazz Book by Joachim E. Berendt. Mark Soskin is featured in the film documenting latin jazz artists entitled "Calle 54”. He signed with the Kind of Blue label and produced three recordings for the company, all critically acclaimed. The first is entitled,“One Hopeful Day ”, which features Chris Potter, Bill Stewart and Jay Anderson.  The second released in October 2009 is “Man Behind the Curtain” with Ravi Coltrane, Bill Stewart and Jay Anderson. The third, released in 2012, is “Mark Soskin Solo Piano- The Music of Nino Rota”. His newest recording is “ Live at Small’s, Mark Soskin Quartett(2015)”, featuring Rich Perry, Jay Anderson and Anthony Pinciotti.  Mark Soskin teaches privately and is available for master classes and workshops.

Splasc(h) Records has documented the vibrantly diverse Italian jazz scene with hundreds of releases. This recording features four of its key performers, who co-lead a tight, well-played set of original pieces very much in the mainstream tradition. (The only tune not written by a member of the group is Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing," after whom the quartet is named.) Luigi Tessarolla's guitar takes the place of a horn, his light, graceful, lissome lines floating above the backdrop of fine rhythmical support provided by co-leaders Riccardo Fassi, Paolino Dalla Porta, and Adam Nussbaum. While the performances are professional and more than competent, few of the melodies are memorable, and there is little here to distinguish this recording from hosts of others. The players are most comfortable at medium and slow tempos. The piano and guitar effectively double on some of the melodic lines; otherwise, they alternate the lead. Much of it is very pretty, and the influence of Bill Evans is partially evident. Paolo Dalla Porta's acoustic string bass is filled with rich sonorities, and journeyman Adam Nussbaum provides the accurate and sensitive timekeeping skills for which he is known.~ Steve Loewy Splasc(h) Records has documented the vibrantly diverse Italian jazz scene with hundreds of releases. Trumpet legend Harry Edison in a very cool setting – working here on an obscure quartet date that also features lots of work on Hammond from the great Bill Doggett! Edison rarely recorded with an organist, which makes the session already such a standout – and Doggett is great in the setting – playing with a more relaxed, flowing style than on his own romping records of the R&B years. Other players include Milt Hinton on bass and Oliver Jackson on drums – and the set's got some great muted ballads that really show off the sweet side of Edison's style. Titles include "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Imagination", "Yesterdays", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams".

Rachel Gould (voce); Luigi Tessarollo (chitarra); Riccardo Fioravanti (contrabbasso); Giovanni Gullino (batteria).

A not easy undertaking, if only for the possible comparisons, overcome with skill by the group of guitarist Luigi Tessarollo with the American singer (but often in Europe, where she teaches) Rachel Gould. Apart from the beautiful voice and the interpretive security, there are arrangements that make the compositions look modern, pleasant, almost out of an anti-aging care. The guitarist puts all the effort possible, precise and attentive to what are the atmospheres evoked by the words of the text. "Two Sleepy People" sees him accompanying Gould alone, in a memorable performance, which combines executive technique and the ability to transmit emotions. And the "Skylark" that follows soon after, introduced by Riccardo Fioravanti's double bass solo is another of the most interesting moments of a varied album, which casually shows changes in training, as in "Baltimore Oriole" performed without the participation of the drummer and the final "Blue Orchids," performed in duo by the singer and the Fioravanti double bass.

It is a successful homage, done with "minimalist" means, without redundant solos or flaunting technical skills out of context. There is a lot of passion for memorable songs performed with sincerity, which makes the album very enjoyable. (Translated from Italian.)

Recorded And Mixed At Acme Studios, Mamaroneck, NY (March 1990).

Three veteran greats combine efforts on this recording for a back-to-basics album of blues-oriented material. In a classic jam session format, Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman join forces in a diverse and frolicsome encounter of three virtuosos. Coming from three different musical backgrounds, the triumvirate finds common ground in the blues and milks it for all it’s worth. From swing to second-line, ballads to boogie, funk, modern jazz, honky-tonk…Blakey, Dr. John and Newman create a soulful spectrum of tunes.

In the spirit of a true jam session, the album was recorded in just two days, with the artists running through each number until they were comfortable with it. Producer Joe Ferry then caught the artists live without a lot of overdubbing to bring out the true spirit of the sessions.

All three brought material to the session. More notable tracks include Dr. John’s arrangement of “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me.” With a laid-back, second-line funk groove, the vocals are done as a call-and-response with Dr. John’s lazy, fuzzy phrasing answered by the tune’s refrain. Fathead plays a mean flute solo and the bass vamps on the groove for the last several minutes as Blakey and percussionist Joe Bonadio exchange licks, releasing the thunder they’ve been building up. ~Anthony Clark

The musicians play six of Rogers' originals, including "Casa De Luz" and the debut of "Lotus Bud." Those familiar with my previous reviews of pianist Rossano Sportiello’s CDs already know that I’m among the converted. He’s a classically trained Italian pianist who transitioned to jazz. And, he’s a master of both styles and his classical skills frequently come to the fore along with some great stride piano. He is now an American citizen, married and lives in New York when not touring. We were lucky to have him for a Pensacola JazzFest a couple of years ago. The current solo piano is no exception. There is more than an hour of delightful music here. There are a couple of classical/jazz “marriages” when he plays Grieg’s Arietta and it melds with Jimmy Van Heusen’s Like Someone in Love. Another is a medley of Debussy’s Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum with Strayhorn’s Lush Life. There are some lesser known tunes such as Red Callender’s Pastel, hence the name of this CD; and, Errol Garner’s That’s My Kick. And, there are a couple of Sportiello originals. Sportiello has a number of tunes on YouTube. One of my favorites is a CD made in Korea with drummer Chuck Redd and a Korean bassist. Below is embedded a video of his solo performance at an Arbors Jazz Party. The end piece is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude” a complex piece I’ve worked on for many years but never got to performance level. He plays it straight and then puts in a stride bass. If you look carefully, I’m the baldheaded guy who stands to clap at the finale. The Chopin in Jazz CD is still available; ships from Korea. https://jazzpensacola.com/cd-review-pastel-rossano-sportiello/

Classically trained pianist, dive-bar chanteuse, black power icon and legendary recording artist, Nina Simone lived a life of brutal honesty, musical genius and tortured melancholy. In this epic documentary, director Liz Garbus interweaves never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage together with Nina's most memorable songs, to create an unforgettable portrait of one of the least understood, yet most beloved, artists of our time.

WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE? is a Netflix original, using recently unearthed audiotapes, recorded over the course of three decades, of Nina telling her life story to various interviewers and would-be biographers. From over 100 hours of these recordings, the film weaves together Nina's narrative, told largely in her own words. Rare concert footage and archival interviews, along with diaries, letters, interviews with Nina's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, friends and collaborators, along with other exclusive materials, make this the most authentic, personal and unflinching telling of the extraordinary life of one of the 20th century's greatest recording artists.

Thank you SD friend.

Jelly Rolls Sweet Band is the Montpellier group of swing music. The sound of the beginning of the last century to the delight of lindy-hop dancers. Jelly Rolls Sweet Band is above all a human adventure guided by a common passion for music played in New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century.

On this first album, we went in search of the source of what we like in this music. Nat King Cole and Fats Waller already in their time were inspired by these melodies to add their imprint. Good music is like good wine, it does not lose a drop of its flavor with the years, and this album will try to keep modestly and respectfully the essence for each of its 12 titles. She was born in Washington, D.C., the granddaughter of Ricardo Joaquín Alfaro (1882–1971), who served as President of Panama from 1931-32. The daughter of a physician, she grew up in Washington. She attended Holton Arms College and Bennett College, both of them for girls. By 1964 she was married to Romanian hypnotist Triaian Boyer. By 1968, they had divorced. After the divorce, she married Jay Riviere, a golf course designer. They had one child, a daughter, Nancy, but ultimately divorced. Ames has resided in Houston, Texas since 1972. She and her third husband Danny Ward are the co-founders of Ward and Ames Special Events.

A folk singer with a partially Latin repertoire, she was signed to Liberty Records; her first album was entitled Cu Cu Rru Cu Cu La Paloma. She broke the top 100 twice in 1966; "He Wore the Green Beret," her answer song to Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Berets," hit number 89, and later in the year "Cry Softly" also placed in the charts. She had a TV show which aired on KPRC-TV Channel 2 (the Houston area NBC affiliate) from 1972-77. She is listed as the co-writer of the theme song to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour with Mason Williams per Williams' own 1969 LP entitled Music by Mason Williams. Ames and Williams also co-wrote "Cinderella Rockefella," an international pop hit in 1968.
