One of the hippest Curtis Fuller albums for Blue Note and one of the rarest too a set that was recorded in 1958, but only ever issued on vinyl in this rare Japanese pressing from the 80s! The date's quite unique as it features "two bones", that is, two trombonists both Curtis Fuller and Slide Hampton, the latter of whom makes a rare Blue Note appearance with a hard, heavy, soulful groove. Rhythm is from the trio of Sonny Clark on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Al Harewood on drums and the quality of the record is all super-high another one of those Blue Note mysteries as to why the label never issued the set at the time. Born September 3rd, 1967 in New York City, guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 60 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has made five recordings for the Criss Cross Jazz label. The latest, Heart’s Content, features the all-star rhythm section of Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Bill Stewart. While a student at The New School, Peter met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, who asked him to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was released as a CD by Music Masters. Hall once noted that Peter “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive young guitarists I’ve heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.”

That same year, Peter was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. “Some people just have it.” Donaldson said. “…most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all.” Peter has also played with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb’s Mob), organist Larry Goldings, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Rhyne, drummer Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and Eric Alexander and performed in North America, Europe and Asia and making numerous television appearances. Peter has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Born in 1966 and living in Cologne, Joachim Schoenecker is already according to music magazine Jazz Podium – one of only a handful of people who have succeeded, with his début CD, in “rising, in just one step, to the level of master guitarist of the modern age of classical jazz”. Since the release of his second CD, “In the Moment”, with an all-star American line-up comprising Chris Potter, Adam Nussbaum and John Goldsby, he has been fêted by the specialist press as one of the most outstanding European jazz guitarists on the scene. Schoenecker’s own compositions have all the makings of classics. And even pieces from the pens of luminaries such as Bill Evans or even Billy Joel become one with the musical vision of this recording artist and his companions. Numerous appearances in German and European jazz clubs and festivals, as well as a raft of guest appearances in various line-ups with internationally renowned musicians are further proof of Joachim Schoenecker’s high-quality talent. Since 1999, he has also been teaching jazz guitar and ensemble playing at the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. Pianist/composer/bandleader Skip Wilkins is a talented musician working out of Eastern Pennsylvania, where he teaches at the Williams Center of the Arts in Easton in addition to making gigs in Philadelphia, the Poconos and New York City. He's recorded several albums with flutist Jill Allen and has compiled, over the years, an impressive catalog of original compositions, now available on Quintet, Vol. 1, soon to be followed by a companion volume.  Culled from three separate concerts given at his college, this recording documents the interworkings of a cohesive band playing over well-conceived material. Consisting of Wilkins, tenorist Paul Kendall, guitarist Tom Kozic, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Gary Rissmiller, the quintet makes music marked by an informality and intimacy gained only through close association and mutual respect. Wilkins has penned some very fine tunes here, including "It Was Bound to Happen (a two-beat funker with an expansive and lyrical phrase structure), "Stephanie's Song (a beautiful ballad in 3/4), and "Unforgotten (a pensive, exploratory ballad). 

There are some brisk up-tempo numbers, too Wilson likes to call them "rumbles over which the group members acquit themselves to forceful effect, as on "No Parking, when Kozic's guitar comes crashing out of the starting gate, only to catch a mellow stride at the solo's mid-stretch. The band (with a pinch-hitter on bass) gave New Yorkers a chance to sample its wares at a mid-December mid-afternoon concert at BigAppleJazz/EZ's Woodshed, a newish Harlem one-stop bop-shop created and curated by Gordon Polatnick. The camaraderie and compatibility suggested by the recording was immediately apparent on the bandstand. Wilkins and friends treated listeners to selections from the recording, as well as some from the yet-to-be-released Vol. II, setting these compositional gems in an aesthetically apposite musical jewel box.

The music of West Virginia pianist Bob Thompson, active as a leader or sideman since the 1970s, ranges from electric and acoustic in a mostly dance-funk style to excellent modal jazz à la McCoy Tyner. In the late '80s Thompson also became house pianist for the Mountain Stage radio program, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and widely distributed by National Public Radio. He recorded a number of albums for the Atlanta-based Ichiban label during the 1990s and into the 2000s while also establishing his own Colortones.com label for such releases as the 1998 holiday outing Joy to the World and the Bob Thompson Unit's Caught in the Act (1999), Homeland (2002), and Hit from the Git (2006). This long-lost session, not released initially until 1982, features pianist Bill Evans, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Philly Joe Jones interpreting seven of the pianist's recent originals. Due to some difficulties during the recording process (none of the sidemen were familiar with the often complex numbers), the results were originally shelved and lost for a couple of decades. This CD reissue shows that the music was actually much better than originally thought. While "Time Remembered," "Funkallero," and "My Bells" would become Evans standards, it is quite interesting to hear such forgotten obscurities as "Loose Bloose" (heard in two versions), "There Came You," "Fun Ride," and "Fudgesickle Built for Four"; a couple of the songs could stand to be revived. It is a pity that Evans and Sims (a logical combination) never did record together again. ~Scott Yanow

A lot of musicians first learn their craft through the various method books produced by Mel Bay Publications. And so it is within reason to expect outstanding technique on the recordings recorded by Mel Bay Records.

Solo , guitarist Jimmy Bruno's first album for the fledgling label, doesn't disappoint on that score. It's a fiercely swung set of standards and originals featuring walking bass lines, sweep-picked arpeggios, and whole tone scales imaginatively deployed on solo guitar. There's even a rendition of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." Bruno not only improvises melodically and soulfully over the tune's labyrinthine chord progression, he also does it while playing at light speed. ~Alex K. Fong

So, I picked up a two Billie Holiday albums. The first was a compilation that included songs Holiday made famous. That compilation included the two above listed songs, as well as tunes like "God Bless The Child," "Them There Eyes" and "Ain't Nobody's Business." I went out and bought Lady in Satin about two weeks later. Holiday recorded that album, on which she performed with a full orchestra, in 1958. The record came out a year before Holiday died, and the ravages of decades of substance abuse and the mistreatment at the hands of the era's racism were apparent. While Holiday was diminished vocally (meaning she probably wouldn't have made it very far on American Idol), she still knew how to sing. That means Holiday used her instrument to make an emotional connection with her listener, she still had excellent phrasing and she could still tell a story. Don't believe me? Just listen to her angst-filled rendition of "You Don't Know What Love Is."

So it's not surprising that vocalists continue returning to the Billie Holiday catalog more than 50 years after her death. Dee Dee Bridgewater released a tribute album in which the songs are arranged in the straight ahead jazz style that is her forte. On Lady, Lynne Fiddmont's homage to Lady Day, the St. Louis native goes in a different direction. Lady has more of an R&B/jazz/world music fusion feel. That was a good idea. Look, no singer can ever take a song like "Good Morning Heartache" away from Holiday. However, Fiddmont's decision to give the tune a Latin feel that brings to mind some of Stevie Wonder's work in the early 1970s, moves this album away from the kind of rote, by-the-book translation that often makes Holiday covers sound stale. Fiddmont makes a conscious effort to give us something different. She employs an up-tempo calypso/jazz beat on "God Bless the Child," and infuses "Fine and Mellow," with a neo-soul groove. Meanwhile, "I Cover the Waterfront," combines that late 1960s Burt Bacharach sound with an ending that includes a "On the Dock of the Bay" style whistle.

If you know anything about Fiddmont's history, you know that she has a special connection to Holiday's music, having played Holiday in the musical Dark Legends in Blood. Fiddmont's love for the material is clear, yet, she manages to avoid making these tunes into museum pieces. Holiday was a free spirit who was often limited by the time in which she lived. However, nobody could fence in her music, and on Lady Fiddmont honors Holiday by loosing the fetters. That's a fitting tribute to jazz royalty. Recommended. ~Howard Dukes

With over a decade of tours and concerts in South East Asia Alexia Gardner has recently moved to New York City. In 2006 Jon Dalton took a trip from his California base back to his old home turf in the United Kingdom. While there Jon heard that Hammond organ maestro John-Paul Gard was looking for a particular kind of guitar player to work with on a series of gigs. Even though the pair had lived within a few miles of each other, this was the first time they got to work on a new project.

To complete the trio they auditioned several drummers, often in a live performance setting. Andy Roger was the only player who could demonstrate the rare combination of style, taste and a talent for sheer groove that the music required and his addition was the final piece of the puzzle that would form the basis for this unique CD.

Between gigs the trio hit the studio in several sessions to make a literal “record” of the music they were bringing to live audiences. The album was recorded virtually live-to-mike in the tradition of all great jazz recordings.

Swing and in many cases “burning” swing forms the rhythmic basis of this outing but, while many listeners have likened the trio’s sound to the great jazz-beat Hammond trios of the late 50s and early 60s, the three also work through tight Latin grooves and experimental jazz explorations in a refreshing and contemporary way.

Beyond the individual talents of the musicians it is their almost telepathic empathy that elevates this music to an extraordinary place.

The music comprises a mix of classic jazz standards and new pieces composed especially for the trio. You may be reminded of the approach of jazz masters such as George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Brother Jack McDuff and even contemporary greats like Pat Martino and Joey DeFrancesco but the trio are not mere copyists, their music breathes its own air.

Warm Ghosts (in a) Cold World brings together echoes of the past and glimpses to the future that is at once an homage to the greats and a message to a new generation.

Dave (or David) is a British pianist, conductor, arranger and composer. His work covers a broad spectrum of the music business, from albums, films and commercials, through to television and live work. He grew up near Henley on Thames and attended Chiltern Edge School and King James College before graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He is probably best known as the Musical Director for BBC Television’sStrictly Come Dancing, a role he took over in 2006 after working on the spin offStrictly Dance Fever, and it’s vocal equivalent, Just the Two of Us. He is shortly to embark on his 11th series of the hit show and in 2014, he and the rest of the production team were recipients of a collective special BAFTA Craft award. This year (2016) the programme won the BAFTA award for the Best Entertainment Programme.

Latin music has culturally been intended for dancing and romancing. Any Latin singer or orchestra worth a cover charge has known this, and David Murray the innovative saxophonist absorbing the role of conductor/arranger on Plays Nat King Cole En Español, demonstrates this concept perfectly. In taking on a project that updates the recordings Nat "King" Cole did in Spanish and Portuguese in 1958 and 1962, Murray maintains the genuine savor of the original compositions, while broadening them to assimilate contemporary improvisation. The crowded dance floors during the golden age of the mambo and cha cha in such legendary clubs as Havana, Cuba's Tropicana or New York City's Palladium come instantly to mind with the opening "El Bodeguero," and that's just the beginning.

The repertoire is perfectly poised from up-tempo numbers to simmering ballads, which are required for the legitimate ethnic experience. Daniel Melingo, a raspy voiced Argentine, is the vocalist on the traditional bolero "Quizás, Quizás, Quizás," and the tangos "A Media Luz" and "El Choclo." Melingo delivers with a sincerity the amorous predicaments demand. "Tres Palabras," an instrumental bolero, is given a bluesy intro by trumpeter Mario Felix Hernandez Morejon, setting up the saxophones which follow. The enduring Puerto Rican standard "Piel Canela," Mexico's "Cachito," and the song written specifically for Cole, "Aqui Se Habla En Amor," are perfect showcases for Murray to display his virtuosity and domination of this complex genre. Kudos all around for the musicianship of the selected soloists, obviously inspired by Murray, who clearly leads by example.

Murray handpicked his Cuban musicians, which he recorded with in Argentina, and recorded the Sinfonieta of Sines in Portugal, for the string orchestrations, thus emulating the vintage Latin big bands of yesteryear compounded with the lush string arranging of the crooner era. Jeanette Lindstrom's promising debut album was titled Another Country because instead of being recorded in her native Sweden, it was done in Copenhagen with Danish players. But most of the time, this risk-taking CD sounds like it could have been recorded in New York or Chicago. Though slight traces of a Scandinavian accent come through on occasion, Lindstrom often sounds like she could be African-American. The jazz singers she brings to mind include Abbey Lincoln and Dianne Reeves, and Lindstrom's phrasing also gives the impression she has much spent time listening to a lot of 1970s and 1980s R&B. But while comparisons are well and good, Lindstrom never sounds like she's actually emulating anyone. Whether the impressionistic post-bop singer is interpreting the lyrics to "Speak Low," "Never Will I Marry" and "Wives and Loves" or scatting on her wordless "Competition," Another Country is clearly the work of someone who had developed a recognizable style of her own. ~Alex Henderson

Martin Sasse Trio: Martin Sasse (piano), John Goldsby (bass), Hendrik Smock (drums). rec. 7 June 2009, live at Telos Akademia, Mechernich-Floisdorf.

This live gig from the Martin Sasse Trio was recorded in June 2009 and the conceit is that the programme is all-European. In his notes Sasse modestly avoids mentioning that one of the tracks is his own Metronome, but other Euro composers include such well known names as English saxophonist Iain Bellamy and the French guitarist Serge Lazarevitch, amongst others. The nationality of each composer is proudly noted in the booklet, so fans of such things can ponder the implications of such a line-up.

The Sasse trio is an articulate, tight knit group, and its bop stylings are well deployed in this set. It's as good in the straight ahead Bellamy Mode forbode as it is in Lazarevitch's warmly lyrical chanson, Quand Laura me tend ses bras, with its echoes of Keith Jarrett in My Back Pages mode. Roman Schwaller, the Swiss saxophonist, contributes Ballad pour Pipette which, once again, calls for a degree of introspection and phrasal warmth, both of which are duly provided, not least in the reflective bass solo from John Goldsby, the American who sneaks in via German residence to contribute Sergio - complete with a long solo for himself, a vibrant Latino feel, and suitably eclectic drum breaks.

King Kombo is an appealingly swinging theme from the pen of Belgian trumpeter Bert Joris. The angular I've got another rhythm was written by another trumpeter, this time Denmark's Alan Botschinsky and it includes an opportunity for drummer Hendrik Smock to parade his wares, and so too the leader via a propulsively swinging solo, and Goldsby's arco solo. Not everything really sticks in the mind; Paul Heller's Close Encounters isn't much of an encounter at all, but Sasse's own piece is a fine example of his creativity, with possibly a hint or two of Horace Silver.

This live set was well recorded and well appreciated by the audience. It's one for trio lovers interested in unusual repertoire.
