LITTLE GIRL BLUE is sublime. From the first catchy beats of "Mood Indigo" to the last bonus track, the extended "My Baby Just Cares For Me," you're in for a real treat. Simone's vocals are smoky and deep, at times almost sounding male, and her voice carries in it such melancholy  maybe melancholy isn't the right word  but there's a likability factor that cannot be denied. Perhaps it's in her phrasing or in its sincerity, but whatever it is, it sounds comforting and familiar.

And then there's her grand mastery at the piano and her arrangements that takes songs and makes them her own. Listen to the swinging arrangement on "Love Me Or Leave Me," and the interpolation of "Good King Wenceslas" into "Little Girl Blue." You might not recognize the name but you'll know it when you hear that little melody. There are four tracks that are just instrumentals "Good Bait," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Central Park (Blues)," and "African Mailman." These four tracks show off Simone's talent as a pianist. They're gorgeous, too. I think the sound is fantastic, the remastering is great, and it doesn't sound dated even though this album is from 1957. ~Alex H.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to have lost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into your consciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacci is not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, but also that what is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous.

Short Stories – a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres and generations united by the trumpeter/composer’s soulful conception. Bringing together songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves, The Gypsy Kings as well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musical universe, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. A short glance at the artists he and producer Tommy LiPuma involved speaks for itself: Christian McBride, Steve Gadd, Larry Goldings, Jacob Collier, Jamey Haddad and Gil Goldstein, for starters. All of the songs have a narrative that any listener can relate to. It might be the eternal duet between people in love, a memory from way back triggered by a chance encounter, an enchanting melody heard from afar that takes over your life or the tremendous empathy that can come from seeing someone else overcome an unimaginable personal struggle.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that Wynton Marsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001, Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as the inaugural students in The Juilliard School’s first jazz curriculum. During his school years and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as a soloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Marty Grosz is quite notable in at least three ways. He is one of the top (and one of the few) rhythm acoustic guitarists, and his chordal solos are always delightful. He sings in a Fats Waller-inspired style. And Grosz is one of jazz's top comedians, able to spin out hilarious, sometimes nonsensical monologues. Two of his three talents are heard on this CD, although he should record a comedy album someday. Grosz leads two different groups during the 1994 sessions. One band has the members of his Orphan Newsboys (trumpeter Peter Ecklund, clarinetist Bobby Gordon, and bassist Greg Cohen) along with the reeds of Dan Levinson, pianist Chris Dawson, and drummer Hal Smith. The other half of this set features Ecklund, Cohen, trombonist Joel Helleny (whose plunger work is outstanding), Dan Block on clarinet and alto, Scott Robinson on tenor and baritone, pianist Keith Ingham, and drummer Artie Kinsella. The repertoire is dominated by obscurities from the '20s and '30s, with a couple of standards tossed in. Grosz sings on half of the songs. Highlights include "Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia," a cooking version of "Hot Lips," "From Monday On," and "Love Will Find a Way." This is a spirited and enjoyable outing, well worth picking up by hot jazz fans. ~Scott Yanow

From the Danish Radio (DR) Big band—directed by such greats as Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely—to the jazz environment of Copenhagen's Café Montmarte, Denmark has been at the forefront in nurturing and producing some of the finest jazz musicians in Europe and, indeed, the world. Saxophonist/flautist Sarah Elgeti is the latest Danish wonder to emerge on the international stage, astounding critics with Into the Open, by her all-Danish quintet. Elgeti wields her sax like a veteran journeyman, pens her own music, is an educator and as a multi-instrumentalist on this debut, performing on tenor and soprano saxophones, flute and percussion.

The leader pairs with alto and baritone saxophonist Marianne Markmann-Eriksen, creating a saxophone front line that powers the music in an assertive yet stylish manner. The very brief "Home" seems more of a warm-up for Elgeti, the only featured soloist, sounding off on a number many have described as Nordic in nature. Nevertheless, "Bossa Among the Trees" reveals a superb band and the first Elgeti-Markmann-Eriksen saxophone combination on a pulsating bossa-influenced excursion. "Out in the Fields" takes the band to a quieter landscape, maintaining the musical conversation between the saxophonists while highlighting beautiful chords from Christian Bluhme Hansen's nylon string guitar.

The funk is alive and well coming into the open on the gyrating "Downstairs," while "Ringe I Vand" (let it rain) and "Clouds" share common atmospheric textures, showcasing Elgeti on flute. The swinging, hard bop "Blustering Waves" captures excellent play from Ben Besiakov on Fender Rhodes, though it is not the main highlight of the tune. The all-out saxophone assault from the leader and Markmann-Eriksen's husky baritone are the featured voices, augmented by Mikkel Uhrenholdt and Magnus Poulsen's additional alto saxophones.

With the short "Clouds" drifting into more mellow territory, the light and melodic "Angelique" (dedicated to her mother) takes the sensitive balladic route, offering Elgeti an opportunity to strike a warm and tender tone. In stark contrast, the official finale, "Night Moves," provides a very different approach with an improvised avant-garde sound. The album concludes with a fusion-tinged percussive rendition of "Bossa Among the Trees" as a remixed bonus track.

Presenting a variety of styles from bop, bossa and funky blues to straight-ahead and avant-garde, Into the Open is a sparkling debut from the Sarah Elgeti Quintet, a group of unheralded Danish musicians led by the newest saxophone voice to emerge from Denmark's proud jazz scene and culture. Virtually unknown in the United States, with this gem of a recording, Elgeti is poised to take her music into the open embrace of American audiences. ~Edward Blanco

This installment in the 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series is an excellent 11-track overview of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's legendary duet partnership, made all the more invaluable by Motown's inexplicable failure to keep any other Gaye/Terrell compilation in print. All the important items are here, from "Your Precious Love" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" to "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By." While other volumes in this overall pretty decent budget-line series still have a definite feeling of incompleteness, this one plays like a detailed look at Gaye and Terrell's best material together; it differs from the early-'70s comp Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell: Greatest Hits by omitting "What You Gave" and "The Onion Song," and including "Two Can Have a Party." ~Steve Huey

Trained as a violinist at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory, but quickly found out, inspired by Svend Asmussen, that it was the jazz music closest to his heart. He has contributed to about 1000 recordings and appeared alongside many of the jazz's big names. Also a handful of solar charger was made, by 2003.

First and foremost, the jazz career Stan Fåz, the vibraphoneist Milt Jackson and the violinists Svend Asmussen / Stuff Smith in the luggage, Finn Ziegler got into the jazz career, which for a period of five decades stylistically brought him wide. Besides his own groups he appeared in numerous contexts. Eg in the 1950s with Finn Savery, Erik Moseholm and Ib Glindemann's orchestra. From the 1970s with the Radio's Big Band as soloist, leader and family member. A significant part of Finn Ziegler's work as a jazz musician took place at two venues/hostels, which he therefore also very naturally has been strongly identified with. In the 1990s Finn Zieglers Hjørne was in Frederiksberg and from the early 1970s La Fontaine, whom he co-ownered until 1986. He helped to make Fontaine one of Copenhagen's most held jamsession places. It was time for La Fontaine, who made his reputation with foreign musicians who visited the city/country and left the road by finishing their jobs elsewhere.

Finn Ziegler died on December 10, 2005 70 years old after being surgery for cancer in the jaw. (Translated from Danish).

Two years after the death of his six-year-old daughter, Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, in the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, saxophonist Jimmy Greene returns with 2014's Beautiful Life. Both a direct response to Ana's death and a celebration of her life, Beautiful Life is a gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting album. Backed by a stellar rhythm section featuring pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash, as well as a handful of guests and many close friends, including NBC's The Voice season one winner (and fellow Hartt School graduate) Javier Colon, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, and singer Kurt Elling, Greene has crafted an album of deep spiritual grace, imbued throughout with Ana's exuberant personality and wide-eyed joy in life. With his warm, burnished saxophone tone and swinging improvisational lines, one might expect Greene to stick to a straight-ahead jazz approach here. Certainly, while his concept is grounded in soulful post-bop jazz, he displays an open-hearted, cross-genre love of music, reworking a contemporary Christian worship song into a small-group jazz number, as he does on "Your Great Name," and setting "The Lord's Prayer" to music, as he does on the orchestral "Prayer" with vocalist Latanya Farrell. Whether it's his lyrical duet with pianist Kenny Barron on "Where Is Love?" from the musical Annie or the spoken word soliloquy set against a children's choir in "Little Voices," delivered here by The Princess and the Frog actress Anika Noni Rose, Greene incorporates songs and artists Ana loved. And it's not just Ana's spirit that's present on all of Beautiful Life; working with guitarist Pat Metheny, Greene begins the album in poignant fashion, weaving together recordings he made of Ana singing both the traditional Puerto Rican holiday song "Saludos" and the hymn "Come Thou Almighty King." Although born out of tragedy, Beautiful Life is surprisingly never sad or, as one might understand, angry. The 1959 Stan Kenton Orchestra, which boasted such soloists as trumpeter Jack Sheldon, altoist Lennie Niehaus, Richie Kamuca and Bill Trujillo on tenors and trombonist Ken Larsen, is heard in spirited form on this live LP. Performing arrangements mostly by Gene Roland along with one apiece by Johnny Richards, Niehaus and Kenton, the band plays some surprising material (such as "Tuxedo Junction" and "Street Scene") but mostly comes up with creative, fresh and concise statements. Phoebe Snow made it onto the soul charts with her version of Barbara Acklin's 1968 hit "Love Makes a Woman" (#87), which served as the leadoff track of her fourth album. But the record marked a fall-off in both her commercial success and her artistic accomplishment. Traveling Wilburys - 2 albums: The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 / The Traveling Wilburys Vol 3

Reversing the usual process by which groups break up and give way to solo careers, the Traveling Wilburys are a group made up of solo stars. The group was organized by former Beatle George Harrison, former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, thus representing three generations of rock stars. In 1988, the five (who had known each other for years) came together to record a Harrison B-side single and ended up writing and recording an album on which they shared lead vocals. It turned out to be a way to transcend the high expectations made of any of them as individuals, and a delighted public sent the album to number three, with two singles, "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" hitting the charts. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack only a few weeks after the album's release.

Two years later, the remaining quartet released a second album, inexplicably titled Vol. 3. Although it didn't match the success of the first Wilburys album, it was another million-selling hit. Throughout the '90s, there were rumors of another Traveling Wilburys record in the works, but no new albums from the group surfaced. Harrison and Lynne did re-team in 1995, when Lynne produced and reworked two John Lennon demos with the Beatles for their Anthology rarities collection.

The Traveling Wilburys albums drifted out of print in the late '90s, making the 2007 release of The Traveling Wilburys Collection -- a double-disc set containing both albums, plus a bonus DVD -- a noteworthy affair. It debuted at number one in the U.K. and nine in the U.S., eventually earning platinum and gold certifications in the respective countries. Despite its title, this Pablo album is not a reunion of Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic although it does seek to recreate some of the original spirit of the 1950s organized jam sessions. Tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis heads the swinging sextet which also includes trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Al Grey, Art Hillery on piano and organ, bassist John Heard and drummer Roy McCurdy. "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" and "Slow Drag" are given lengthy interpretations (both are around ten minutes apiece) while six other familiar standards are more concise. Nothing all that unusual occurs but there are some fiery moments from the classic swing stylists. ~Scott Yanow

Kathy Sanborn is an American award-winning jazz vocalist, composer, and recording artist. Known for her velvet voice, Sanborn takes jazz music into the modern era with her sultry, contemporary sound. Sanborn won a 2015 American Songwriting Award for her world single, "Fantasy," produced by 2015 GRAMMY® winner Ricky Kej. The year 2016 brought a ZMR Award nomination and a One World Music Award nomination for her seventh album, Lights of Laniakea. In addition, Sanborn was a 2014 Hollywood Music in Media Awards nominee.

The sultry songstress is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (GRAMMY Awards®) and the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Latin GRAMMYs). Sanborn's biography has been displayed in the celebrated Who's Who in America for ten consecutive years. As a composer and songwriter, Sanborn is a member of BMI.

Back in 1998, Blue Note came out with a series of little 35- to 45-minute "Breakbeats" samplers taken from the thick, rich catalogs of Bobbi Humphrey, Grant Green, Reuben Wilson, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, and Lou Donaldson. What you get on this particular volume are six very enjoyable examples of Lou Donaldson's best jazz-funk grooves harvested from the golden formative years of this well-loved style (1963-1970). The collective personnel is pretty wicked, and includes Blue Mitchell, Melvin Sparks, Grant Green, Charles Earland, and Idris Muhammad. As usual, the background for the music is way bigger and runs much deeper than many folks realize. Anyone who has gone back and assessed Donaldson's entire career knows that he was one of the few alto players who didn't switch to tenor in the shadow of Charlie Parker during the 1950s. Donaldson's chops were always as formidable as Bird's or Earl Bostic's, James Moody's or Cannonball Adderley's. His recorded legacy is a lot more diverse than you would imagine if all you went by were the funky tracks that have since been lucratively "legitimated" by the recording industry in response to the sampling habits of a whole generation of DJ mixologists. Not to complain -- it's very cool that Lou Donaldson's funk-jazz is getting reissued and is being enjoyed by people young enough to be his great-grandchildren. It's just that it would be awfully nice if more people were aware of the considerable stylistic range of his music. The root system of these "Breakbeats" exists in the amazing and to some extent overlooked records that Lou Donaldson made between 1952 and 1963. For maximum enjoyment and fulfillment, get some context for the funk and you'll enjoy it like never before. ~arwulf arwulf

A talented bop-based pianist (whose son has been one of the brightest pianists of the 1990s), Kenny Drew was somewhat underrated due to his decision to permanently move to Copenhagen in 1964. He made his recording debut in 1949 with Howard McGhee and in the 1950s was featured on sessions with a who's who of jazz, including Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Buddy DeFranco's quartet, Dinah Washington, and Buddy Rich (1958). Drew led sessions for Blue Note, Norgran, Pacific Jazz, Riverside, and the obscure Judson label during 1953-1960; most of the sessions are available on CD. He moved to Paris in 1961 and relocated to Copenhagen in 1964 where he was co-owner of the Matrix label. He formed a duo with Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and worked regularly at the Montmartre. Lovisa Lindkvist. There is no doubt that music has always played a vital role in Lovisa's life, already from early years. Even as a little baby, Lovisa mimicked her mother as she practiced her singing. And so, it became natural from early on to express herself through her voice. With a voice far more mature than her 27 years of age, she belongs to the group of Swedish jazz vocalists that bridge the gap of the famous Swedish singer, Monica Zetterlund. At 10 years of age, she was accepted at the music education of Adolf Fredrik Elementary School, where choir singing is mostly taught. However, she soon realized that she wanted to pursue a career as a solo singer. In 2006, she released her debut album, "That Girl", which was mainly recorded live with only first-take recordings. It contains famous songs from "The American Songbook", but also some originals, and was highly praised by critics all over Sweden, described as a "fantastic debut", and Lovisa was named as Sweden's next great jazz vocalist. At the same time, the album was released in Japan, and in the same year, she became the first-time receiver of the Monica Zetterlund scholarship. In 2007, she contributed with two songs on an album with the best ballads of Bo Nilsson, which also featured songs by Tommy Korberg, Monica Zetterlund, and Sylvia Wrethammar. Lovisa has performed at TV 4 Nyhetsmorgon, at various jazz clubs all over Sweden, as well as on national radio. Awa Ly has crossed the world for various reasons, even artistic, and his music is the result of such nomadism. But he has never put aside his native and his mother tongue. Paris Jazz is the sum of two passions of the Franco-Senegalese singer: jazz and French chansonniers . Chantons! took shape in 2003 with the experienced pianist Teramano Arturo Valiante and the multifaceted contrabbassist Valerio Serangeli . The trio already has two discs: Amour , 2008 and J'ai deux amours , 2009, both destined for the Asian market only. Paris Jazz , fired for Alfa Music, is therefore their first European record label and also sees the participation of a group of renowned Italian musicians (particularly the stamps and colors drawn by Aldo Bassi's trumpet) that contributed to give body to a job more than pleasing, well-set and crossing the history of some French music. Indeed, given the nourished track-list (fourteen songs for just over fifty minutes of good music), these are songs that have marked a few generations in the time span since the mid-forties ( La Vie en Rose , C'est bon , both interpreted with the right palm and natural freshness) to reach the contemporaneity with two songs signed by the trio ( L'amour here goes , Toi you n'es pas there ) that mirror the air moderately which pleasantly draws on the work. Over the years, Criss Cross can be proud of its track record when it comes to fostering new talent and launching new artists. Some of the names who got their start while on the label and who now enjoy active careers include Eric Alexander, Benny Green, Peter Leitch, Kenny Garrett, John Swana, and Jim Rotondi. Now add to that list the name of Jimmy Greene. This graduate of Jackie McLean’s program at the Hartt School and current member of Horace Silver’s quintet actually has the double advantage of having two debut recordings currently on the new release docket, one for RCA and this Criss Cross title that was actually recorded in 1997.  Introducing Jimmy Greene has all the earmarks to suggest that Greene is a new voice that demands our attention, yet I’m sure that he’d freely admit he’s made strides since this set. His bold tone and broad range leads to an almost liquid-like conception that comes through with deceptive ease. He’s not a bad writer to boot and his arrangements here are workmanlike, if not downright catchy. “Con Alma” gets a sprightly treatment not unlike a classic version from Wes Montgomery’s Bumpin’. The standard “I Love You” also gets a new facade via its rich three-horn voicings, although one would have hoped to hear both Swana and Davis utilized more throughout. Greene’s one ballad statement, “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most,” is a real beauty, complete with extended cadenza at the close. As for the rest of Greene’s cohorts, Swana and Davis are already well- known, while pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassist Darrell Hall are two up-and-comers. Rounding out the group, Eric McPherson is a fellow Hartt grad that has been tearing things up as of late. The saxophonist and flutist Kaori Kobayashi is one of the most active and prolific artists of the music scene Smooth Jazz in Japan. Since launching his first work in 2005, he has been releasing one album a year, highlighting titles such as Glow (2007), Precious (2011) and Spirit (2014). Melody is their new album, entirely of versions on well-known artists like Eric Clapton, Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs or Chicago. One of the best moments of the album is Runaway , a 1978 issue of The Salsoul Orchestra, which years later was versioned by Kenny Gonzalez and Louie Vega in their Nuyorican Soul project. Kaori Kobayashi recreates it with his sax and his flute.
